Vivian Vanfang is my creation.
Meanwhile across the city, Vivian was walking into Enforcer Headquarters, just as Commander Feral was as well.
"Those no good Swat Kats! I know they had a part to play in the destruction of the bank and now I have this "Shadow Kat" to deal with as well! Our city will be overrun with vigilantes before we know it!"
Vivian smiles slightly to herself. 'Three vigilantes is hardly "overrun".'
Commander Feral happens to notice Vivian. He eyes her badge for a second. "And just who are you?" Vivian stops just as Feral does. She smiles and extends her hand out to him. He shakes her hand.
"Good morning Commander Feral. I'm Vivian Vanfang. HR hired me recently to do inventory for the Enforcers?"
Feral considers her for a moment. "Ah, yes, I remember the job posting. Lieutenant Commander Steel! Front and center!" Feral calls out as this shrimp thing of a brown cat with blonde hair runs up to Feral with a file. Vivian catches sight of her last name on it. He hands it over to Feral. "Ah, so you've run into her already. Waste of tax payer money for a BS job like..."
"Shut up, Steel." Feral says as he reads over her file. He looks up a her with a surprised look on his face. "Expert sniper for the United Kats Army?! 30 confirmed kills?!"
Vivian shrugged. "32 actually, 2 are pending review, but I don't like to brag about it."
"You don't like to brag about it?! You should be in the Enforcers with stats like these!" Feral exclaimed. Steel nodded in agreement, peeking over at her file himself.
"I served my time in dangerous territory, Commander Feral. I'd rather be a paper pusher and go home regularly now, Sir. That part of my life is done."
He closes her file and hands it back to Steel.
"If you ever change your mind, you know where my office is. We could really use you on the force."
Vivian smiles. "Trust me, I won't."
"Oh, did you make it over to the scrapyard to check on our..." Feral fake clears his throat. "Extended non-service punishment detail?" Feral said, smirking a bit.
"Jake and Chance's garage you mean? Yes I did. So far, everything seems to be in order there."
Feral huffs. "Tch...in order...those two?! They single-handedly tore down the original Enforcer Headquarters building years ago!"
"From what I've seen in the reports, they're not the only ones who have done and re-done some damage to this building several times, Sir." Vivian stated as Feral growled.
"Those Swat Kats are to blame for a majority of it! Imagine if I had kept both of those hotshots on our payroll AND having the Swat Kats around. There would BE no city left to be rebuilt! Now I have this other vigilante to deal with too! Good day to you Ms. Vanfang. Welcome to the Enforcers HQ."
He walks away from Vivian, leaving her standing there alone.
'Wow...he really hates Chance and Jake and the Swat Kats almost equally. He'll probably end up hating Shadow Kat too, but once her business is done here, she'll be gone and out of his hair.' Vivian thought to herself as she walked back towards her office.
Meanwhile, back at the garage...
"Do you think it'd be too soon to start sending her flowers, Jake?" Chance said as he worked on the TurboKat, unmasked. Jake, unmasked as well, stuck his head out from under the bomb bay doors and raised an eyebrow at him. "Which one? To Ms. Vanfang or Shadow Kat?"
Chance rolled his eyes. "Well Vivian, of course! I don't know Shadow Kat."
"You don't know Vivian either."
"True, buddy. I gotta find a way to get to know her better..."
"Chance, give it a rest. She already told you she doesn't date her co-workers. Just leave her alone and if she wants to talk to you, she will."
Chance frowned at Jake's answer.
The next few days, Chance found every opportunity to try and be near her and get to know her better. She usually just stared at him sometimes when he asked her a non-work related question, but Chance was persistent.
One day, she was out, walking the grounds, Chance followed her of course. Not only because he wanted to, but because Jake urged him to make sure she didn't accidentally find the hanger as the Metallikats had at one point and almost killed them.
"Huh? Is that an obstacle course over there?" Vivian asked and pointed. Chance responded. "Yeah. Me and Jake like to stay in shape, kinda re-live our enforcer days, ya know?"
"Oh...that's...ahhh!" Vivian accidentally caught her heel and tripped on the outer edge of the hangar, which was thankfully closed, and fell.
"Ms. Vanfang, are you okay?!" Chance said, coming to her side immediately on the ground.
"Ugh...I'm such a klutz sometimes." She went to move and hissed in pain. Her knee was also bleeding. "I think I twisted my ankle."
"Let's get you inside." Chance said as he moved to scoop her up.
"There's really no need..."
"I insist. Besides, I don't think it's good for you to walk all the way back to the garage like that."
He picks her up bridal style with little to no effort. She's pressed very closely to him, she could feel chest and arm muscles through his coveralls. A warm tingly feeling swept over Vivian's whole body as he carried her back to the garage. She could feel her face flush red and hoped he wouldn't notice. He walks through the front of the shop and sets her down on the couch.
"Wait here, I'll get the first aid kit." Chance said, walking off to go find it. He walks past Jake on his way to get it. "Hey Chance, what are you doing?"
"Vivian fell and got hurt."
"What do you mean fell and got hurt?" Jake asked with wide eyes.
"She tripped on the hanger and twisted her ankle and scraped her knee. It's not bad, but it's still gotta be treated." Chance shrugged.
"She didn't ask what she tripped on, did she?" Jake asked, sort of panicked.
Chance looks slightly annoyed. "Don't cough up a hairball Jake, she wasn't even concerned about it. She thought it was her own fault."
"Oh..."
Chance continued onward to the get first aid kit. A few moments later, he returned to find Vivian looking her heel over. It had snapped in the middle of the stiletto. 'Ugh, story of my life.' She thought as Chance returned with a medium sized first aid box.
"You gonna be able to walk on that?" He asked, noticing it was broken. Vivian shook her head. "Unfortunately no, but at least I have an extra pair in my car."
Chance started getting out the antiseptic and a bandaid for her knee. It went through his mind how many times both Jake and himself had to pull this thing out after saving the day. The many yelps of pain and trying to bandage each other after a run in with Dr. Viper, Dark Kat, and some others lucky enough to hurt either one of them.
Chance decided to check her ankle first. "Is it this one?" He pointed to the foot without the shoe she was currently holding in her hand. "Yeah, but you don't need to...ah!" He gently touched her ankle, pressing around.
"Nothing feels broken. It's probably just a sprain. You'll be okay." He put her leg down and kneeled down in front of her, cleaning the wound a little with a warm washcloth. He then poured some antiseptic onto the rag and started cleaning her wound with that. She hissed in a breath and Chance looked up at her. "You okay?" He asked, genuine concern showing on his features. Vivian notices for the first time his sky blue eyes. 'He does have nice eyes. Damn it, Viv...' she thought as she came back to reality. "Hello? Earth to Ms. Vanfang?" Chance said as he waved a hand in front of her face.
"Oh, what was the question?" She said, slightly embarrassed now.
"I asked if you were okay? I know this stuff can sting sometimes."
"Yeah, I'm good. You have a lot of experience in having to use that, being a mechanic?" She asked him as he smiled a little.
"Oh yeah, plenty of times. Burns, cuts, scrapes. I get them all the time working under the hood of or under something sometimes." Chance said, knowing he was half telling the truth.
"Yeah, I know all about that stuff too, being former military."
Chance did a double take. "You were in the military, Ms. Vanfang?" He asked as she nodded. "Yes Sir. Did my 5 year enlistment straight out of High School."
"That's radical! I joined the Enforcers not long after High School too. I'm sure Feral told you why he kicked us out." Chance said, his smile fading a bit.
"You guys destroyed headquarters, according to him." She said as he went for the bandaid.
"No...well yes and no. What he didn't tell you was that while we were chasing Dark Kat, he was about to destroy HQ himself. We disabled his bomb bay doors and were about to take him out when Feral demanded we back off. I refused since it was clearly our tag. He clipped my wing on purpose and sent us into a tailspin I couldn't recover from, so Jake and I ejected and our jet crashed into HQ. He made us come here to pay off the rebuilding of HQ, and the rest is history."
Vivian's eyes go wide. "Wow, he tells it a bit differently. He labels you as..."
"A couple of screw ups? Yeah...we know." He finishes patching Vivian up and gently pats her upper leg. "All done, Ms. Vanfang." Chance says with a smile. She catches him by his wrist before he goes to leave.
"Vivian." She says to him suddenly. Chance is surprised. "Huh?"
"You can call me Vivian if you want. My friends sometimes call me Viv too."
Chance can't help his smile. 'We're on a first name basis now! Could this mean something?' He thought as he felt a kinda ping tingly sensation in his heart.
"Oh, so we're friends now?" Chance asked with a small smirk. She lets go of his wrist and crosses her arms over her chest.
"Don't get it twisted. I'm just trying to be nice and since I've been here for a while, I thought maybe we can start using first names, unless you don't want to?"
Chance shakes his head. "I don't mind."
"Oh! Could you do me one more favor?" She asked as she pulled out her keys to her car.
"Hmm?" Chance asked.
"Could you...would you mind getting my extra pair of shoes out of the back floorboard of my car? I really don't want to try and hobble out there like an idiot trying to get to my car."
Chance smiled and took her keys. "I don't mind, I'll be right back." He started walking out towards the front of the shop. Jake sees him walking out. "Hey buddy, where are you going?"
Chance stops for a minute. "Just going to get Vivian her extra pair of shoes. She broke hers when she fell."
Jake raises an eyebrow at him. "Oh, so you're on a first name basis now huh?"
Chance winks at him and continues out to her car.
Meanwhile inside, Vivian watches TV on the couch as she's waiting for Chance to return with her shoes. The news is currently on.
"This is Ann Gora with Katseye news, bringing you this scene playing out at the Megakat mint. Apparently a brazen group of thieves are robbing the mint as we speak." Vivian reacted with a fierce look on her face.
'I have to go check that out. Hopefully my little accident won't slow me down.'
Meanwhile outside, Chance unlocked Vivian's car with the keys. He opened the back passenger door and began to look. 'She obviously makes way more money than I do. I could never afford something like this. It's even got that new car smell still.' Chance thought with a frown.
He looked at the floorboard. Her extra pair of flats were exactly where she said they would be. "As Jake would say, "bingo"." He said out loud as he grabbed them. He happened to look over and see something folded up in the backseat. It looked like a neat pile of leather.
Before Chance could look to see what it was, a hand on his shoulder distracted him. He turned to see it was Jake. "Hey buddy, duty calls. Megakat City needs us." Chance now has that uncontrollable smile on his face. "Alright, but let me get Vivian out of here first."
Chance got up and closed the door to her car, locking it with the remote.
He found her still sitting on the couch. He handed over her shoes and she put them on quickly. "Hey, uh...we gotta close up shop for...uh...lunch, so you gotta go." Chance said as Vivian started to stand up. "It's fine. I need to get to HQ anyway." She picked up her other pair of shoes as she stood up from the couch.
"You gonna be okay?" Chance said, ready to catch her if she stumbled or fell. She gave him a small smile. "I'll be alright. I'll see you two tomorrow." She said as she walked past him and out to her car. Both Chance and Jake waited until she was far enough away from the garage for Chance to close the garage doors and then he turned to Jake with a smirk. "Let's hit it!" They both said as they made a run for the hangar.
