Kim had woken up frustrated. Adam had gone out with the boys and decided to sleep at his place night. She had gotten used to sleeping next to him. It felt good, right and overall safe. As she arrived at the district she groaned loudly seeing the person calling her. Her family had been trying to contact her a lot lately but she hadn't responded. But this was her nephew so she answered it. "Hey Bay what's going on?" She was trying to stay pleasant and positive. "Hey Aunt Kim. I uh need some help" Bailey responded, Kim rolling her eyes. "What do you need this time?" Kim asked as she walked up the stairs. "I need money. Having two kids, the house, the car, the motorcycle. I just can't afford it. I need to feed my kids." He was begging her.
"Yeah no! I'm not giving you money again. You were the one who decided to have kids you couldn't afford. You are the one who who just got a free car from your mother, so don't talk to me about car payments. The motorcycle, fucking sell it like you did with the last one you couldn't afford. You have two kids you don't need a motorcycle. You can't afford food? Sell your gaming equipment! Go on welfare, go one WIC. Be a man! Step it up! Stop relying on your family to pay your bills and feed your kids!" Kim ranted as she entered the bullpen and headed to the break room. The team staring at her.
"I have two kids! I have a mortgage and all the bills associated with that house. Plus I have a rental here that I'm responsible for. I have a car that I have to pay for. Between my paycheck, child support and alimony I'm still barely making ends meet and you expect me to pay for your kids to eat? You have got to fucking kidding me! You know when you guys announced the second baby I was so pissed off because you couldn't afford the first one. Your mother told me that we just needed to support you. Well guess what I don't! You stayed with the baby momma who did nothing! No job, no license. Who neglected your second child and wasn't feeding him enough. CPS was almost called. And sitting your kid in front of the tv so you can raw dog trying to make another not cool. And announcing that on social media is nasty and distasteful. Your kids don't speak because they don't hear conversation other than on tv. You really need to take a good long hard look at your life and figure it out. Going forward if you want to talk cool but don't ever call asking me for money again!" Kim hung up without another word.
She placed the phone down and tried to steady herself. She knew the team heard everything and were probably watching her. She was literally shaking with anger. "Hey you okay?" Adam asked standing next to her. "Not really no." Kim shaking her head. "I mean I heard most of it but I assume he needed money?" He asked sitting next her. "Yeah. He tried acting like things were so hard for him. And I'm sure they are but the government has programs to help people like him. Why mooch off family? It just pisses me off." Kim just hung her head. "Why didn't you tell me things were so tight financially? I could have helped you." Adam pulled her against his body. "I never ask for help. And we are managing. We just don't have a ton of extra money to play with. But we manage." Kim tried to explain. "I just really need to sell the Queens house and things would be fine." She buried herself in his embrace.
"Any chance of that?" He asked having no clue about the property in Queens. "I hope it sells soon. It's expensive so it's a slow go. I really need it to sell though. I will really set us up for a good future here. I wouldn't have to mortgage much and would save a decent bit in the long run. Until then we will manage." She just didn't have a good answer. "Well hopefully is sells soon. Until then just ask if you need something. I know you won't but I need you know I'm here if you need anything." He held her tight till they got a case. He had no idea things were so tough for her and the family. He only wished he could make things easier for her. He was going try, he was going to figure out a way to take the heat off her.
"Let's work this case and then we can head home." Adam released his hold on her so they could get up and work the case. They listened to all the case details before they headed out to the scene. It was a brutal scene, blood everywhere. Signs of a struggle, the place was ransacked. Was that before or after the murder. No one was sure. They divided into teams to search the property for evidence of what was stolen but also who could have done it. Kim and Kevin were partnered together like normal and were checking the bedrooms. "So you okay girl?" Kevin asked watching Kim as she looked through the drawers. "Yeah just another reason I choose to distance myself from them. I didn't mind helping in the beginning with the first one. But it got out of hand. The asking got more often and for larger amounts. And yet he was still keeping his motorcycle, his gaming equipment and his guns. All things that could have been sold to feed the kids and pay the bills. The last straw was when the baby momma asked me to take her cat to the emergency vet because it was eating and panting. It was over heated since it was too hot and the dumbass refused to turn on the AC. I stopped offering help after that. I send gifts for the kids but otherwise offer no support." Kim shrugged and kept moving through the house.
Kevin just nodded and watched her. They continued to search the house only finding empty drawers. They met up with the rest of the team to share what they found. Unfortunately no one found much which made this difficult but not impossible. Back at the district they once again spilt up looking through phone records, pod cameras and background checks on the victims. It was tedious work but it usual helped solve the case. However several hours went by and they were no closer to finding the killer. Adam and Al headed out to grab lunch for everyone. Jay and Erin headed to the ME's office getting a time line of when each died and how they died.
Jay and Erin returned stating that the husband died first then the wife and kids. Mouse had found a suspect coming and going from the house but it wasn't clear enough fir facial recognition. Antonio was tracking down the frequently called numbers. Kim worked on getting search warrants for the couples emails. No computers were found at the scene and the only phone didn't have email attached. Kevin has been looking to see where the couple worked and getting their bank records. Everyone was busy trying to get justice for the murdered family. When Adam and Al returned with lunch for the team Adam had a special gift for Kim. He had her favorite sandwich and drink of choice but he also had a cupcake and some flowers.
"Thank you! I really appreciate it." Kim hugged Adam tight trying to keep the PDA under wraps but also wanting to show him how she appreciated it. "You're welcome! I'm just happy to see you smiling again." He kissed her forehead before releasing from his hold. It take much longer before the team got a lead. Apparently the wife was having an affair and called it off. Her lover was angry and decided to punish her by killing her and her family. The house was ransacked to throw the cops off. He also stole valuable items to sell to make money off his crimes. It was petty and disgusting but unfortunately it was something they saw in their line of work. Paperwork was finished close to 6 and the team decided to have a drink or two before heading home.
Kim wasn't really interested in going but went. It had been awhile since she went to the bar with the team so she figured it was time to go. Adam followed close behind her as they entered the bar together. He knew she had no interest in going so he wanted to show he supported her completely. "Just one drink and then we head home. I know that's where you want to be." His hand firm on her back. He watched her nod slightly as they found the table with their friends. "I'll grab you a drink. Relax a bit." He left her in good hands but he knew today was tough. "Cases with kids are always hard. We all feel it but as a parent it's worse." Antonio let her know he got exactly how she was feeling. "Yeah I'm just thinking about my babies at home. I just hate crimes involving kids." Kim hung her head low sighing.
"We all get it. Just hug your kids harder when you get home. That's all you can do." He rubbed her shoulder watching her be devastated over this case. Adam arrived back with the drinks. Kim took a very large gulp of her drink before placing her glass down again. Not much conversation was had everyone feeling down from the case. Kims phone rang breaking the quiet. She looked quickly before declining the call and turning over her phone. She was not rehashing the morning call again. She wasn't changing her mind. Adam took her phone placing in his pocket so she could relax. They would only answer if it was work or April. She needed this downtime. The drinks were finished and the couple headed home along with the rest of the team. No one was in the mood.
Adam followed her home wanting nothing more than to be with her tonight. He hated sleeping alone anymore. It was cold and lonely. As they pulled up at her place he jumped out rushing to her side. He held her tight as they entered the home. He reheated the leftovers April left for them making sure she ate something. He really didn't feel like eating but he knew she needed and really he did to. They ate in silence before heading to her room. Kim moved to check on the kids first seeing they were both sound asleep and holding hands. She kissed both their cheeks whispering I love you to each child before sitting on the floor just watching them sleep. Watching them sleep helped relax her mind some. Knowing they were safe here in their home made her relax a bit.
He watched from the door. Seeing her slumped against the wall staring at her sleeping children broke his heart. He decided to join her for a bit. Sitting next to her holding her close as they watched the kids sleep soundly. He had no idea how long they had been sitting there but he realized she had fallen asleep. He carefully stood as to not disturb her and picked her to carry her to bed. He was careful to not wake her as he undressed her. He didn't bother getting her into pjs he just left her in a shirt and underwear. She was literally dead weight with how asleep she was so this would have to do. He checked that the monitor was on for the kids before he undressed and laid beside her. As he drifted to sleep his mind traveled to Mother's Day just a few days from now hoping she would be happier again by then. Life had dealt her a shitty hand fir sure but he had hope.
"Okay wake mommy up my saying happy Mother's Day." Adam whispered softly to the kids. Both kids took off screaming "Happy Mother's Day!" As they jumped on the bed. Scaring Kim in the process. "Well thank you babies! That's so very sweet of you!" Kim pulled them in for hugs not realizing that Adam was there and watching. "Well it is a special day all about you so a surprise was in order." He was watched the surprised look on her face turn to one of love and appreciation. "This has been the best Mother's Day already." She replied snuggling her kids. "Well it doesn't end here. Breakfast is served downstairs then the kids have a day planned with Halstead and Lindsey. While you get pampered all day." He saw shock flash across her face. "Are you sure they are up for that?" She was serious. Two kids was a lot. "Linds volunteered and Jay agreed so yes they will be fine. For one day. Come on let's go eat before it gets cold." It was staying warm in the oven but he had plans for her and a schedule to keep to.
The small family headed down the stairs to the kitchen where the table was set, flowers in a vase, lots of balloons and a card from the kids. He had even helped the kids to sign the card so it was even more special to Kim. He served breakfast to the Kim first and then the kids before serving himself. He made sure she had everything she needed before he settled himself. They ate while the kids chatted away about their day ahead with Erin and Jay. They were excited to spend the day with mommies friends. When breakfast was finished Kim took the kids upstairs to get them bathed and dressed for the day. Adam cleaned the kitchen as he wasn't quite comfortable bathing the kids alone yet.
After their return he got their diaper bag and made sure things were all set for the day ahead. Kim sat with her kids amazed that Adam had planned all this just for her. Her own husband never did, saying she wasn't his mother. The more she thought about the past the more she can't believe she put up with all his crap for so long. It was really hard to believe but it was the truth. She was broken from her thoughts by the door bell ringing. Adam answered it knowing who it was. "Hey guys! Thanks for doing this. Come on in." Adam allowed them in the house. "Please it's no problem. Remember we offered to watch the kids today." Erin smiled seeing Kim with the kids.
"Hey guys! Thank you so much! Are you sure you can handle both kids?" Kim was surprised they had offered. Especially since they didn't know the kids well. "Trust me we got this! Right kids?" Erin asked looking at the kids. "Yes!" They yelled. "Great let's head out kids. Let mommy and Adam have a of pampering mommy." Jay was excited to play with the kids. He loved being a kid himself and their job didn't allow it. The kids ran to the door ready to go. "Alright here's their bag. They are good about using the bathroom but have pull ups just in case. I also packed some snacks and drinks for them. Say bye to mom kiddos." Adam handed Erin the bag as the kids ran bag to hug their mother. "Bye babies! Love you so much! Behave for Erin and Jay Okay?" Kim made sure to remind them of that.
The kids nodded before headed out with Erin and Jay. Kim and Adam were left alone to enjoy their day. "So what do we do now?" Kim shook her head confused by the new found freedom. "Well first we are going back to your room where you are getting a massage then a shower and then we are heading out for some fun." Adam explained not giving her too many details. "You are amazing! Thank you for all this." Kim gushed. "Only for you and what you need." Adam held her hand leading her to their bed. "Alright get naked and lay down, face first. I'm not a professional but I know enough to make you feel good." He was no pro but he couldn't wait to help her relax. "Oh I'm sure you will." Kim stripped down and laid down on the bed, moving her hair so it's not in the way.
He moved to straddle her body not putting any of his body weight on her. Starting at her shoulders working out all the knots and kinks as he went. He could feel her relaxing under his fingers. "More pressure or less?" He asked softly. "Move please!" Kim moaned feeling the deeper pressure being applied. As he moved to her lower back her moans were getting louder. "Feels good baby!" Kim groaned as she enjoyed the ways his hands were making her feel. "Good. You deserve it." He kept massaging her lower including her butt. He finished by massaging her legs and feet. "Are you ready for your shower?" He asked quietly. "Sure but only if you are joining me." She looked back winking at him. "Heck yeah. Let's go!" He winked in return getting up from the bed. He headed straight to the bathroom to start the water before returning to guide her to the shower.
In the shower he started to wash her body gently, lovingly. She moaned as he washed her core. "I got you darling." He knew he was working her good. He stood behind her pressing their bodies together. Sliding his fingers down into her core before he entered her. Kim moaned loudly rocking her hips with his fingers. His other hand rested on her abdomen keeping her close to his body. "Just let yourself go. Allow yourself to feel." He whispered against her ear. "Oh I'm feeling. And it feels amazing." Kim groaned starting to shutter. "Oh darling. Let it go." He encouraged her wanting to feel her let go completely. His words, his touch and his fingers pushed her into oblivion. Crying out his name as she came in his arms. Adam continued to rock his fingers till she slowed completely again.
After removing his fingers he sucked them clean. He cleaned her core once more before cleaning himself. "Dress comfortably." Adam mentioned as he watched her step out to dry off. "Any more information on where are going?" Kim asked as she wrapped a towel around her body. "Nope! You are just going to have to wait!" Adam winked watching her roll her eyes at him. "Don't worry I promise you will have a great day." He winked again closing the curtain again. She could here him laughing in the shower. She just groaned and headed to the bedroom. She got dressed in nicer shorts, a tank top and an over shirt left open. She finished the Look with sandals. She was brushing her teeth when he got out of the shower. He reached out to touch her but swatted his hand away. "Nope! First you are wet and second you won't tell me anything so Nope!" Kim smirked and headed out swinging her hips as she went. He just groaned loudly knowing he did it to himself.
They got in the car and headed out. Adam took the time to put extra turns in to throw Kim off the trail. He eventually pulls up to the beach. It was still too cold to be in the water but warm enough to walk the beach and relax in beach chairs. "You brought me to the beach?" Kim was jumping out of the car excitedly. "I thought it would be nice to walk by the water for a bit, look fir some sea glass to add to your jar." She hasn't realized he saw the mason jar with the small shards she had found already. "Sounds perfect. I think the green ones are the easiest to find but it's all hard to come by." They walked along peering down at the shell covered areas. Picking up pieces here and there to check.
After walking maybe a mile they stopped to sit in an area that was basically deserted. "Thank you for my first mothers days. This has been perfect." She leaned her head on his shoulder. "Kim your kids are almost 3. How is this your first Mother's Day?" He knew Paul was an asshole but he hadn't thought about this. "He always said you're not my mother. So I got nothing, ever." She shrugged trying not to make a thing of it. "That's horrible. You may not have been his mother but you are the mother of his children. You carried those babies for 9 months. You pushed them out if your body. You fed them with your breasts. That should be celebrated today and everyday. Moms are literally super hero's." He held her, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "Well you know how he acted after I got pregnant so you can't be surprised. I hated it but I just let it go. I didn't want my kids not to have a dad, their dad. But it didn't work out that way." Her eyes never left the water as she spoke about the pain in her heart.
"I don't know everything that happened and with time I'm sure I will learn more. But know that you did what you thought was right at the time. And that's all we can do in the moment. I'm so proud of you too. Because when it got abusive you got the courage to leave. Never forget that." He squeezed her tighter knowing nothing he could say or do would fix the broken part of her heart and soul. Only time could heal that. "When we bought the house, we got it cheap. It was foreclosed but needed work. The family put holes in the walls and broke things before they left. But anyway. We fixed it up, survived the renovations. Had it appraised after the work was done to insure it properly. It had increased in value but a lot. We were thrilled. But it never really felt like home. I don't know if that makes sense but it felt like a house but not a home." She sighed heavily.
"I get exactly what you are saying. A home feels full of love and happiness. Good memories, laughter, kindness. Your house was devoid of that. The next house you buy will be home. I promise you that. You will make it a home." He felt her sob. Letting out the pain she had held inside. "That's It Kim. Let it all out. You've made an amazing life for you and the kids. You should be proud of yourself because I am. And I know everyone else is too. Your kids are going to get the best opportunity at life because of you. I love you girl!" He held her tight as she cried. "I love you too. And I can't wait to find that home. Whenever mine sells so I have money to invest again. You know with you in my house, even though it's a rental, it feels like a home. It feels amazing having you there. I'm nowhere near ready to live together but I feel at peace when you are there. No walking on eggshells, no waiting for a fight to abrupt. It feels like what a real family feels like, what a partnership feels like. It's actually comfortable." She finally turned to look into his eyes.
"When I met you I knew right away there would be something between us. When I met your kids I knew this is where I want to be. I won't lie the idea of living together and being an actual family is exciting but also terrifying. I know it won't be perfect, I know we will make mistakes but I want this more than anything. And one day I hope to be their dad and expand our family. That's the goal for me." He watched shock, surprise, happiness, confusion, hope all flash through her eyes. "I want that too but it's gonna take a long time. I'm not ready I agree completely!" Fir the first time since the shower she crashed her lips into his. He had been surprised initially but recovered quickly. Knowing they were in public meant they couldn't get carried away but the words had said enough.
"Let's get some lunch now. It's the next stop on your Mother's Day adventure." He helped her up so they could start walking back. "So from the car it's just a couple of blocks if you don't mind walking." He didn't think she would mind but wanted to check. "Yeah that works for me." She was still peering at the ground looking for some sea glass. "Perfect it's Latina fusion but they sell fresh sea food. Which I know you love. And it's on the water so the view is amazing." Her eyes lit up at the words sea food. "Yes I do! I need to put in an order from the sea food market that I love in Jersey. They will over night it to me." She loved fish and so did her kids so she made sure to keep it in the house for them. "Oh I need to get on that. Sounds amazing." He pulled her closer. "It is! Crab legs as long as your arm! It's insane!" Kim's eyes lit up even more thinking of the crab legs.
"You have some great connections darling! We need to take advantage of that soon. But first lunch." They entered the restaurant and were taken to a table by the water but covered so they didn't burn in the sun. Adam pulled out his phone to see several text messages from Jay. They were all pictures of the kids having a good time. He shared them with Kim knowing it would make her happy. "I'm glad they are doing well with someone other than me or April. I know she's enjoying her full day off from the kids. I have no idea what I will do if she decides to leave Chicago. All of this was possible because she moved here with us." She was always worried that might happen. It was always a possibility. "We will figure that out. We have tons of friends someone has to know a sitter or two that we could use. But that's not gonna happen for awhile." He was sure it would be fine. He knew April loved Kim and the kids but he knew it was a chance.
They ordered lunched and made small talk as they ate. Kim glancing at the water every few minutes. She was happy to have a beach here. They spent a lot of time at the beach in Queens. The kids loved it, maybe more than Kim did. "What's on the agenda for the rest of the day?" Kim asked trying to get information out of him. "Oh no! I'm not telling you that! You just have to wait and see." He laughed at her little angry face. He knew there was nothing behind it but it was cute. "It's not nice to laugh at me." She pouted trying to keep up the act. "I'm not laughing at you. I'm laughing at your failed attempt to be mad at me. You know you're not." He smugly smiled at her. She just swatted his hand laughing as well.
When they left the restaurant they headed back to the car and headed to the next location. She was shocked when they pulled up outside a nail salon. "You booked me an appointment here?" She asked surprised. "No I made us appointments here. We are both getting manicures and pedicures. Obviously no polish on me but I figured it wouldn't hurt to manscape a little." He watched as Kim was beaming with happiness. "This is really amazing! I can't believe you are doing this for me." She was truly surprised. "Only for you. So let's do this before I change my mind." He helped her out of the car and led her inside. They started with the manicures and Adam was surprised how much he actually enjoyed being pampered. It may need to be a regular thing.
Once the pedicure started Adam knew he would do this again. It felt nice having someone massaging his feet and giving them some proper attention. "How often do women do this?" He asked Kim. Watching as she leaned back with her eyes closed. "Um every four weeks in the summer. I try to do 6 weeks in the winter." She answered with her eyes still closed. "I have to admit this is pretty nice. We should do this more often. But you can't tell anyone. The jokes will be epic." He knew there was nothing wrong with what they were doing but he knew Kevin and Jay would razz him big time about it. "I think it's kind of sexy. And who cares what they think. You are just doing something relaxing for yourself. But I promise I won't tell a soul." She answered him once again with her eyes shut.
They left the salon feeling relaxed and ready for more adventure. The next location was the Navy Pier. They walked and enjoyed the simple things. They found a mini golf course and Kim really wanted to play. It was pretty competitive between the couple but they were having a good time. Each hole was very trying to out do the other. But the laughter never ended. People were watching them and getting in on their game. Egging them on as they went. Kim had won the game she was over the top in celebrating her win. The women around them giving high fives. Kim was a loving all the positive attention, Adam was being a good sport but grew tired so he scooped her up throwing her over his shoulder. Laughing harder when she squealed bursting out in laughter as well. As they returned to the car they both admitted their cheeks hurt from laughing so hard. And they would need to play again.
They eventually headed to dinner but neither was really hungry. They shared a few small plates before heading home. The kids would be home soon and Kim had missed them during the day. They had barely entered the door when they heard the car pull up. They went right back outside to await the kids getting out of the car. "Mommy!" Both kids screamed running towards her. Kim was crouched down with her arms open waiting. As soon as they jumped into her arms she lifted them up, one on each hip. "Did you guys have fun today?" She asked noticing both kids looked exhausted. "Yeah we jumped, played, swings. It epic!" Mia explained. "Wow sounds like you guys had a very busy day. Did you thank Erin and Jay for taking care of you?" Kim asked. She was desperately trying to teach the kids proper manners.
"They did. They were very well behaved all day." Erin watched Kim snuggling her kids. "Good I'm glad. Come on in. I'm just gonna put them to bed." She opened the door for the group to enter the home. Kim headed right upstairs with the kids who were already asleep on her shoulders. "So were they really okay?" Adam was hopeful they had done well with the new situation. "Yeah they were great. We went to a trampoline park, the park, had some lunch and dinner. They are really sweet kids. Kim did well with them." Jay dropped the kids bag in the table. "I'm so glad they did well. I was worried since they haven't been with you guys before. But I'm thrilled with this. Hopefully we get Kim out of the house more if we find a sitter other than April. Kims scared she's gonna want to move back." He shook his head thinking about it.
"Owens nanny is great! I'm sure Nat would be willing to share if need be." Jay offered knowing how hard it was to find a good sitter. "Good to know." He offered them drinks but they both declined. They were headed home as soon as Kim was back down. As they waited Adam talked about their day and how much fun they had mini golfing. None of them noticed Kim had returned. "Thank you again for today! I really appreciated it! And I know they must have had fun to be knocked out already. I don't know how to repay you." She was just so happy that the kids had fun and that the unit accepted her and her family so well. "Just me we had fun too. It was a good time and good practice. Hopefully we don't have twins though. That's a lot of work." Erin laughed watching their faces process. "Holy fuck! Are you serious? OMG! Congratulations!" Kim launched herself forward to hug both Erin and Jay. "Holy hell! That's so exciting man! I'm happy for you both!" Adam was shocked but excited for his friends.
"Unexpected for sure but we are excited. Doing things backwards I guess. Hank didn't take it well but I didn't think he would. He never wanted us together in the first place so this will be adjustment for sure." Erin explained further. "Oh I get it. I was in the pill and we used condoms and I still got pregnant. So I get it. Thank god for stronger birth control now. I'm definitely not ready to do this again." The group laughed as Kim shuddered thinking about it. "Well we are pretty beat. So we are gonna head out. Take care. See you guys tomorrow." They all said their goodbyes as Erin and Jay headed out for the night. "Well that was crazy exciting news." Kim mentioned as she grabbed drinks for them. "I can't believe Jays alive. Voight punched in the face when he found out Erin was dating Jay. It was bad. But only Jay can handle Erin. Others have tried and failed miserably." He chuckled thinking about her past if shitty boyfriends. "Lovely. Well I'm happy for them. And I can't wait to see the beautiful little person they create." Kim says almost wistfully.
"Sure you don't want more?" He asked watching her. "I said not now. I never said never. I would kind of like to plan the next one. That makes no sense I'm sure but I need all the bases covered this time." Kim shrugged. "So can I tell you I freaked out a little hearing you say you got pregnant on birth control and condoms. We definitely aren't good about the condom thing." He watched her eyes show understanding. "I get that. Completely understand that. But the one I'm on now stops my body from releasing eggs all together. So it's safer and since it's an implant I don't have to remember to take the pill everyday. By 40 I want my tubes tied, all the extra hormones from birth control is bad for you. It can cause cancer, blood clots and other health issues." She shrugged knowing that was far down the line. "I understand and I'm fine with that. I will do it too. That way we know for sure. But only once we are 40." He was very serious about that. "Agreed. How about we go to bed? Enjoy our own play time?" Kim asked while running her fingers up and down his arm suggestively.
"Yup! Let's go!" He lifted up and carried her to bed. Not before placing her on his hip like she did with her kids earlier. He patted her butt as they went up the stairs. Kim giggled the entire way.
