The couple spent a long night playing with the kids, hearing all about their days while they were away. The night had been full of laughter and tears when the kids finally settled into bed. They were overly tired and fighting going to bed. Once they laid down they were out. Kim sighed heavily realizing her babies weren't babies anymore. They were almost 3. It killed her how grown up they were already. "I think it's time to take the rails off. They climb out anyway. It's safer without the rails oddly. I'm just not ready even though they clearly are." She whispered as she watched them sleep. "Kim they are almost 3. The rails need to come off at some point. And by 4 they will probably needs their own beds. They can't stay babies forever." He rubbed her arms lightly. He heard her sigh again.
He led her to the bedroom gently. "It's been a long day. Let's get some sleep. You can think about it tomorrow. Tonight just relax and sleep." He watched her head into the bathroom to shower. He let her be, he knew her mind was in over drive. After she finished he jumped in needing to wash the muck of the day and the hospital off him. When he finished he found her in bed looking through photos on her phone. He didn't need to see the phone to know she was looking at baby photos of the twins. Time had been flying by so quickly for her. She wanted to freeze time and keep her kids safe and innocent forever. "Just relax. Tomorrow you can deal with it. But tonight just relax and sleep. Put the phone away." He watched her put the phone down and roll into his waiting arms. She was out pretty quickly. He was asleep shortly after.
When he woke again he found her still asleep. It was an hour before the alarm was set to go off. He decided to wake her gently so they could enjoy some morning pleasure before waking the kids and heading to work again. His fingers started to trail down her body to the back of her thigh. We are happy you are here!" Mia yelled. "Well I'm happy to be here to. But tonight I think I'm going to stay at my place. You guys need extra snuggle time with your mom. Okay?" He asked watching the kids smile wide. "Okay. We love snuggle time with mom!" Milo stated. "Okay babies let's eat some breakfast." Kim picked the kids up and placed them in their high chairs. She made plates for each of the kids before making her own plate. Adam was already sitting down with some coffee. He was loving the family scene happening in front of him. It was beautiful and pure.
Once they all finished eating the kids were taken up to change in to school clothes while Adam made lunches and cleaned up from breakfast. It may not be exactly what he had envisioned when he had thought about having a family in the past but it was pretty damn perfect. The giggling was getting out of control and he heard lots of foot steps running above him so he headed up to help get control over the situation. He found Milo running down the hall naked. "Woah little dude! You need clothes on! Come on let's go!" Adam scooped him up taking him back to their room to get dressed. "Thank you! Seems like we don't want pants on today." Kim was laughing even though she was frustrated. "Oh I see that! I think we might halve to arrest this one for indecent exposure. Or public nudity!" Adam laughed when Kim started to giggle thinking how crazy this all was. Adam closed the door behind them keeping the kids locked in the room so they could not escape getting dressed for school.
The kids were dressed against their will but dressed non the less. The kids then headed down the stairs with the couple close behind. Once the kids were settled in the car Kim drove them to school and then they headed to the district. "You ready for this Kim? To work with that woman?" He asked watching her leg shaking. "I'm not but I have to be. So let's get this day over with." Kim sighed heavily. "We got you! Let's head in." Adam helped her out of the car as they headed in. "How are you feeling by the way?" Kim asked as they walked into the district. "I'm good. It's not that bad. I promise." Adam squeezed her hand. "I'm glad! Let's do this!" She let go of his hand as they entered the district. They tried to stay as professional as possible in the district to prevent people from knowing they were together.
They headed in the bullpen seeing most of the team was already there. The only one missing with Upton. "Morning!" Kim smiled as she dropped her things at her desk and headed to the break room for coffee. "Morning! You ready for today?" Erin asked following her. "Not really but I don't have a choice. She just needs to learn her place.and stop with the gossip. I can't deal with more drama." Kim set her cup down hearing someone coming their way. "Absolutely correct. We will handle it Kim." Al was the one who made it their way heading the conversation. She just nodded knowing he was right. She walked back to her desk passing the boys are her way. She just kept her head down and went to work. Not that she had anything to do yet. They all heard the gate open and knew the day was going to get awkward real quick.
She greeted a hello when she walked in, not that anyone really paid attention. She knew she screwed up the day before and wanted to fix but didn't know how. She went to Kim's desk, the team staying busy but watching. "Can I talk to you please?" She asked Kim quietly. "Sure what do you want to talk about?" Kim asked at a normal speaking tone. "Um I was wrong yesterday. I'm sorry for how I came off." Upton spoke softly. "See here's the deal Upton. It's not how you came off. It's what you said. That's the difference. You may think I'm being a bitch right now but I think I'm coming off stern. See the difference. You didn't use a tone of voice that was wrong. What you said was wrong. I'm gonna make this very clear to you. SVU is the most difficult unit to work in, ever! Listening the a women retell her story of rape over and over to be called a whore on the stand by a defense attorney, kills you inside. Listening to a child tell you that daddy stuck his thing inside her, kills you on the inside. Listening to a teenager tell you how she ran away from her abusive parent to be sold into prostitution or sex slavery, kills you on the inside. Watching the court system grant a rapist shared custody of the child created by the rape, kills you on the inside. I could go on but you get the hint. I lasted 5 years, most wash out after 1. And I gladly would have done 10 more if I could. But it never gets easier holding the victims as the break down in front of you. It never gets easier finding victims that choose to kill themselves then deal with the process. And it never gets easier trying to understand how a parent could rape their own child. So don't ever talk to me about it being the sex police. We are done here." Kim never raised her voice. But her tone left no room for argument.
As she stood to go get a water she saw her boss smiling at his desk. She watched him nod as she stood her ground and defended her past life. Kim took a moment to collect herself before returning to her desk. The stunned looks on the faces of her team was all she could see. Erin though was crying. She left her desk to hug Kim, knowing they both needed it in that moment. "Thank you for what you did. We really need an SVU here too." They hugged for a moment longer before they separated. "Alright we have a case and some new partners to pair up. Ruzek is on desk duty for a few weeks till the rib heals and Lindsey is on desk duty going forward. With that said Halstead and Burgess, O and Atwater, Dawson And Upton. Ruzek when you are back you are with me. Any questions?" He asked looking around. "What's the new case?" Halstead asked ready to move on. "Rape case. Figured after yesterday it's time to show what SVU really does. So Halstead and Burgess take the lead. Upton pay very close attention. This is what's it's like to have your heart ripped out every case." Voight stopped speaking as he heard the gate open. Platt was arriving with the victim.
"Good morning. I'm Detective Burgess, this is my partner Detective Halstead. We understand you have a case that needs to be reported." Kim spoke gently to the women who was shaking. "Um yes. I was um raped last night." The women's head hung in shame. "I'm so sorry to hear that. Let's head to the interview room where we can talk more about what happened to you. Just want to let you know that we have cameras in the room for your protection and ours. It also let's us play back the interview to make sure we don't miss any detail that could help us. Is that alright?" Kim explained again gently. "Yes thank you." She spoke softly. "Of course right this way. Could someone get her a blanket please? Fresh from the wash." Kim asked moving the women towards the room. Jay followed behind as did the team. Erin grabbed a fresh blanket for the small women who was shaking and scared. Draping it over her shoulders before leaving the room.
"Okay miss could you tell us your name, age and what you do for a living?" Kim asked starting with the easier questions. "Um sure. Sharon James, 35 and I'm an accountant." She spoke softly still. "Okay Sharon. I want you to walk us through the details of your attack. What happened before, during and after. Please provide as much detail as possible. Nothing is too small Okay." Kim watched as Sharon nodded. "I was on my way home from work about 7:30pm. I live 5 blocks away. I always walk. I was less than 2 blocks in when I felt someone pull me into an alley. He pushed me up against the wall holding a knife to my throat. Told me if I made a sound he would slit my throat. I froze." Sharon was full on crying now. Kim handed her the box of tissues and allowed her to settle down some. "That's okay. It's called a survival response. You did what you had to to survive. That's okay and completely normal. You survived." Kim spoke softly trying to calm the women down a bit.
As Sharon calmed down some she started to speak again. "I heard him unzip his pants and I heard the fabric hit the ground. I cried loudly. He pushed the knife into my throat more cutting it a bit. I hissed at the pain. He told me to shut up or he would cut deeper. I did as he told me to. Next thing I know my dress was up and he was pushing inside me. I guess I zoned out after that. Next thing I know it was over and he was fleeing the alley. I stayed there awhile longer hoping he didn't come back. Then I went home and got really drunk before coming here." Her head was still hung in shame. "None of this is your fault! You didn't deserve this. No one deserves this. I'm going to get you a water. Are you okay here with Detective Halstead?" Kim asked and waited for Sharon to nod before leaving.
Kim stopped to see those watching them. "She admitted she drank after, Now she can have a drink. Before hand you never give them a drink. It washes away and chance if DNA." Kim moved to the break room to grab a water and returned to the room. Jay had taken over asking questions at that point. "Do you remember anything about what your attacker was wearing?" He asked gently. "Jeans and a hoodie which seemed odd since it's warm out." She answered. "That's good. Did you see any logos on the hoodie? And was the hood up or down?" He asked jotting down the details. "The hood was up and I didn't see a logo. I admit I didn't look." She cried again but Kim was right there rubbing her back. "That's okay. No problem. How about skin color? Eye color or hair color?" He asked again very gentle. "Um he uh was white, his eyes were black so very black and his hair was dark brown." Sharon took a sip of water her hands shaking. "Any visible scars or tattoos?" He wanted as much info as possible but knew she might not remember. "No not that I saw but his hand was very hairy. Maybe that's something?" Sharon looked up hopeful. "That's definitely something." Jay added giving her some peace of mind.
"Okay so from here we need to get a SAE kit done at the hospital. I won't lie, it's the most unpleasant thing possible but it will help us catch this bastard. Are you okay with doing the rape kit?" Kim asked afraid she might say no. "Would you?" Sharon asked looking up at Kim. Jays eyes went wide before looking back at the two way mirror. "Yes I would. And I have. If you allow this I will hold your hand the entire time. And I will stand beside you in court when you testify against him. Every step of the way." Kim assured the poor women who looked broken and torn. "How did you get through it? How do you trust again?" She looked at Kim confused, trying to figure it all out. "It's a process. A lot of therapy. Time and just knowing there are still good people in this world. They aren't all rapists. I admit it's difficult. Some days are harder than others. Some smells set off a reminder. But that doesn't hinder my progress and it doesn't stop me from trying. I think one of the hardest things was being honest and open with my current partner about it. Hoping it didn't change things. Hoping he didn't see me different, broken. But truthfully therapy and support groups helped the most." Kim tried to stay vague on the details but honest.
"Okay I will do it." Sharon agreed holding her hand out for Kim like she needed saving. "Okay. Let's head out. I will have the team call ahead and make sure we have a female doctor waiting for you to arrive." Kim took her hand and led her past the team. Jay followed behind blown away by how Kim handled not only the victim but telling parts of her own story. SVU was clearly very different from Intelligence. "We will finish the interview during the exam. Helps you to focus less on what's happening down there." They started out of the room to see Erin waiting for them. "I will call ahead for you guys. We will also start the investigation so we aren't wasting time." The three left after that. They headed to the hospital silently.
"Okay before we start investigating. What did we learn from all that?" Voight asked knowing they should have all learned a lot. "Make a personal connection with the victim helps put them at ease in an uncomfortable situation." Adam stated. "Good anything else?" Voight asked. "Constant reassurance that it wasn't their fault. Rape victims will get blame from a lot of people. They need to hear it's not their fault and they didn't deserve it." Kevin followed up. "Also that freezing is normal and that it doesn't mean you wanted it." Erin added as a follow up. "Isn't it risky letting the victims know about our personal lives? Or lying about our personal lives to make connections?" Upton asked confused. "In these cases making the connection works best. Showing the victims they aren't alone and they can over come this. And no one lied here today. Detective Burgess is a rape victim. She chooses to help those like her. Now go investigate." Voight dismisses the team to start working again.
Burgess, Halstead and the victim arrived at the hospital to be greeted by a nurse they knew well Maggie. "Hey guys. I have a room all set up for you. I even got Dr Manning waiting. Figure female would be preferred." Maggie stated. "Thank you Maggie. We appreciate that." Jay followed them into the exam room. "Okay so this is Dr Manning. We are going to have you strip off you clothes for evidence. We will give you something to wear home. Detective Halstead will step outside while you change for your protection. Once you are in the hospital gown he will return but won't look at the business end." Kim explained as Jay stepped outside. The victim stepped behind a curtain to undress us private. Each item was put in a separate bag to prevent cross contamination. After she was done she got on to the bed in the hospital gown.
Jay returned into the room closing the door behind him. "Are you Alright being in here Halstead?" Kim asked quietly. "Yeah. This is new to me so I think it's time I learned." He looked nervous but Kim understood. This was ugly for sure. "So they get started let's talk about your dating life. Do you have a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife?" Kim asked knowing gay woman can be raped too. "No I haven't dated in awhile." Sharon answered. "Okay. Are you on any dating apps?" Kim knew casual dates could be brushed off by some. "Um yeah. But I only went on 1 date and it wasn't the same guy. We both agreed there was no chemistry and we moved on. It really was no big deal." Sharon knew it wasn't the same guy. "Okay we will still check it out just to be safe. Now have you noticed anyone following you? Maybe watching you?" Kim watched Sharon wincing and squeezing her hand harder. "Um no I don't know. God that hurts!" She cried. "I know. And I'm sorry you have to do this at all. Do you have a gym membership?" Kim asked trying to stay focused. "Um yeah I go to the YMCA in the Loop. Why?" Sharon asked. "We can look at camera footage to see if someone was following you." Kim assured her.
Kims eyes went over towards Jay several times watching how uncomfortable he was getting. "Jay if you need to step out it's alright." Kim whispered. "No I'm good." Jay waved her off. "Alright let's get this finished. It's almost over I promise." Kim whispered to the victim. "Really because this seems like it takes forever. And it's worst than horrible by the way." Sharon winced once more. "Well you are doing better than any man would I can tell you that!" Jay offered knowing he would be dying right now. Not only did it look painful but it was also humiliating. "Well good thing men can't be raped." Sharon groaned in pain. "Actually men can be raped just like women. Arousal and orgasm are just physiological response to stimulation. So men can be raped as well by other men or even by women. It's also the least likely to be reported because most people don't understand that it's possible." Kim nodded towards Jay with her little knowledge bomb.
He smirked at her. He was proud of his new partner. "Well I'm happy this is now over. What happens now?" Sharon asked. "Well we will investigate your case. The DNA will be processed. That will take a few days no matter how fast it seems on tv. If and when we find your rapist he will be arrested and then most likely go to trial. You will go over your statement dozens of time before you enter the court room. When you are on the stand the defense attorney will do any thing and every thing to make you look guilty. To make it seem like your fault. You will have to stay calm and focused. It will be brutal and beyond painful. But no matter what happens you get your life back, you get to accuse your rapist. A lot of women never get that chance. Again. I will be with you the whole time. I promise you that. Now let's get you changed and get you home." Kim helped her up and they left the room while Sharon got dressed once again.
Once she was dressed again they drove her back to her home, waiting till she was inside safely before leaving again. "That was pretty intense. But I'm proud of you! The way you handled that was unreal!" Jay was overly impressed by her skills. "Oh that's cute! But I don't feel that way about you Detective! You have a girlfriend and a kid on the way!" Kim was straight faced watching Jays face turn into shock. "Wait? No! I didn't mean it like that!" Jay stuttered. Kim busted our laughing. " I'm just kidding! I'm just busting on you!" Kim continued to laugh at Jays face that was bright red but now laughing along. "Okay you got me. Good one!" Jay laughed heartily at her. They arrived back at the district still laughing happily.
They entered the bullpen still chucking but separated and went to their desks dropping off their items before checking in to see how the case is going. "What has you two laughing?" Al asked looking at the two weirdly. "Oh Kim was just busting me. But it's cool. I will get her back somehow." He looked at her smugly trying to keep their game going. "Good luck with that. So what do we have?" Kim laughed walking towards the board to see what's going on. "Well we found this guy coming out of the alley. Followed by the victim 20 minutes later. 10 minutes before he left the alley you see our victim being pulled in to that alley. We are running his face through the recognition software. Other than that we haven't ruled anyone in. But ruled out the people she worked with and the guy from the dating app you let us know about. Still working on it." Erin replied.
"Okay that's great but one last thing you all need to understand. Rape cases only stay active cases for 5 years. After that the rapist can't be charged. So we are always working against the clock on these cases. We also need to look for similar cases. That might help us find other victims but also other details that could lead us to this man." Kim pointed to the picture of the man that had no name yet. "Only 5 years? That's bullshit!" Dawson commented. "Agreed so let's just make sure we are efficient with our work and not do anything to risk losing this case." Kim pleaded with her team. The teams split up working hard to find who did the deed. It was an hour later when Atwater found 3 similar cases. The teams split up to talk to the officers that responded to each case.
It was several hours later Kim moved into the break room for a fresh cup of tea. She was unaware that she was being followed. Most of the team was out chasing leads. "Burgess, can I talk to you?" Upton asked wearily. "Sure. What's up?" Kim poured the hot water in her cup as she waited to hear whatever was to be said. "Um. I'm sorry. I really had no idea how hard these cases were. Listening to the victim earlier today made me want to throw up. I honestly don't know you did this everyday. I just wanted to say I admire you for what you do." Upton left after that. Kim was thankful for the kind words but it did little to ease the sting of the previous conversations. She finished making her tea and headed back to her desk.
"Everyone! Take the rest of the night off! You deserve it. We can finish the case tomorrow. Get some rest. Be back at 8:30am sharp!" Voight dismissed the team. Kim sighed knowing it was a bad idea but she didn't fight back. She was exhausted and had a movie night planned with her babies. Adam walked over to Kim's desk, they hadn't spoken much during the day. "Hey Darling. You were amazing today. I think we all learned a lot about how to handle victims and how to connect with true victims. I'm really proud of you." He watched her stand up to embrace him. "Thank you. It's not easy but getting justice is worth it. Helping the victims get justice is worth it. But it's not fun reliving my story to help them." She rested her head on his chest. "I'm really proud of you. Now head home and snuggle up with the babies. You deserve the night to relax. I will call you before I go to bed." Adam kissed her forehead trying not to show too much affection at work. "I will miss you tonight. But I look forward to your call tonight. Love you!" Kim whispered against his lips. "Love you too darling! Miss you too!" He kissed her back softly before they both left the bullpen.
Kim made it home in time for movie night. She may have missed dinner but at least she got to eat with the kids. That was enough for her. They curled up in front of the tv and turned on a family friendly movie that both kids loved. It was perfect and she couldn't get enough. Though she did miss Adam but she wasn't ready for him to move in. She would love it but it was too early, it would be rushed. Adam was at Molly's enjoying time with the team. "So I gotta say Burgess really surprised me today. Like I knew she was good. But the way she connected with our victim, sharing parts of her own personal story, making her feel safe. Was crazy good!" Al commented. He rarely went out with the team but tonight they needed it. "Yeah I agree. I was shocked when she opened up like that. But it seemed to help." Jay thought for a moment before he continued. "You know the victim mentioned how men can't be raped. And Kim went on a full on explanation of how it's possible and goes mostly unreported. Then gave her an explanation that 'arousal and orgasm are just physiological reactions to stimulation'. I was so surprised how she made it sound. Like not in a bad way but just really surprising that that is how it works." He shook his head but noticed Adam smirking.
"What's with the smirk?" He looked him dead in the eyes. "Nothing just nice to hear you all say nice things about her. I knew she was a badass warrior but it nice that you all are getting that too." He smiled taking a sip of his beer. "Oh we knew she was. We just didn't realize how badass she was. She could teach all of us a few tricks." Kevin stayed nodding to the team. "Cheers to that!" Dawson added as they resumed normal conversation. The whole night went by quickly and he dreaded heading home but he never wanted to rush Kim. She had to make sure this was good not only for herself but for her kids. He knew that but he wanted nothing more than to make them his family. It was a long way to go but he wanted her to know. So as soon as he stepped into his apartment he gave her a call as promised. She didn't answer. He didn't worry to much especially when he got a photo from her phone of her children sleeping on top of her.
He responded right away. "Don't move them. Soak up all the snuggles you can get. I really miss you though. I've done a lot of thinking today, over the last few days. Kim I want this, I want us all to be a family when you are ready. I love you and I love your kids. And I'm starting to see them as mine and it scares me. But I really want to be a family when you are ready. So you just let me know when and I will follow your lead. I love you Kim. Get some sleep. I love you, all of you." He didn't wait for a response knowing it would catch her off guard. She may run but he needed her to know how he really felt. A feeling he never felt before. It was scary, he didn't lie. But it was also exciting he only hoped she felt the same way. Tomorrow they would continue the case and hopefully he would get his answer but for now he went to sleep dreaming of his little family he desperately wanted.
