"Morning" Kim stated as she walked into the bullpen seeing most of the team had arrived. "Morning Burgess!" Jay replied while most everyone else just said morning. They all sounded grumpy already. "Wow everyone sounds so thrilled this morning!" She laughed. "Where's Ruzek?" She asked seeing his desk empty. "Locking room. Talking to his dad." Kev answered coming out of the break room. "Gotcha!" Kim smirked and sat down at her desk waiting for the day to start. "It sounded intense. And I know his pops doesn't like you but you may want to check on him." Kev gave her a very knowing look. "Be right back." Kim sighed heading to the locker room. She walked with a purpose knowing if it was ugly he would need her support. But when she reached the door the yelling was loud, his voice fully of anger.
"Pops I don't have that type of cash! I never have! How does this keep happening?" Adam paced the room rubbing his face. She walked slowly not wanting to startle him as she approached. She slowly wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her cheek on his back. She felt him tense right away. "It's just me baby. I got you, I always have you." She whispered before kissing his back. He relaxed but he was still angry. "Pops really I don't have that kind of money. I can't help you. I'm really sorry pops but I can't help you. You really need to get help pops. I really want you to get help. Save your career by getting help please." Adam sighed heavily. "Right I got to okay. My shift is starting. I hope you get it worked out." Adam hung up afterwards. He removed her arms and turned around to hold her tight. "Are you okay?" She whispered softly. "Not really. He needs cash, gambling debt, again. Needs over 20k this time. I for sure don't have that type of cash. And even if I did I don't know if I would pay it. Am I wrong?" He asked not looking into her eyes. Afraid of what he would see.
"Baby! No you are not wrong. I can assume that you paid it off before. And he hasn't learned his lesson. Baby that's not on you. You can only bail someone so many times before you have to let them fall. Let's just hope he gets some help. But know this. I will always be here for you. My kids will always be there for you. You will always be a part of our family. We love you so much Adam!" She reached up pulling his face to hers kissing him. She felt tears on her skin, cold and wet. "I love you darling! Thank you for not turning your back on me when things got rough. I know this is a lot considering you have a lot going on with your ex, the houses and the kids. I just need you here more than ever." He tucked her head under his chin holding her so close. "I'm not going anywhere. This is where I want to be and you are who I want to be with. Now let's get you cleaned up a bit and then talk to Voight, just in case." Kim pulled back giving him a soft kiss before letting him out of her hold.
She waited till he was ready to leave the locker room. He reached out to hold her hand as he walked towards Voights office. "I will be right here when you're done." Kim whispered as she hugged him. He nodded and entered the office. "Hey uh boss. Can we talk?" Adam asked nervously, closing the door behind him. "Yeah. What's going on? Everything okay?" Adam's posture was very concerning. "Um no it's not. My dad he's uh in the hole 20k in gambling debts. He asked me for money. I can't afford that." He sighed looking down embarrassed by his father's actions. "Um Kim thought I should keep you in the loop just in case. What should I do? I don't want to get in trouble for his wrong doings. I don't want my career ruined over him. But he's my pops." He hung his head low, his hands shaking.
"Adam. Look you came to me. I will protect you and your job. Let me and Platt handle your dad. We will get him help. He will still need to pay his debts to these people but we will make sure you are safe. We got this!" Voight reassured him before he left Adam left the office. He tried to not look stressed when he left the office but it didn't work. Everyone could see the stress and worry all over his face and in his body. They chose to stay out of it knowing if it involved Bob they didn't need to know. They waited for a case so they all worked through the paperwork left over from the last case. They could also see Voight on the phone talking animatedly.
When he excited the office he looked pissed off but schooled his expressions. "Alright so it's not our case but we have been asked to take a look. We have a ton of background experience from different areas so let's give them a hand." He starts placing photos of the crime scene on the white board. "Alright our victim just got back Mexico. Had some plastic surgery and now is dead. Breast implants cut out of her body. Any ideas?" Voight asked looking around. They all got closer to the photos to check them out. "Boyfriend pissed she did it behind his back?" Kev offered. "Nope! She's a drug mule." Kim stated very confidently, "I think you need to explain that." Voight asked having no clue where she was going with this. "Okay so we all know condoms and balloons filled with drugs are at risk for stomach acid eating through them. The mule over dosing and the drugs are ruined." Kim took a breath moving closer to the photos to point at.
"Okay so this is not where you would normally cut to put implants in. They normally cut here around the areola. The implant is soft enough to move around and fit in. However one filled with drugs wouldn't be as soft so it would need to be inserted differently. The outer lumen of a breast implant is very strong. With very little risk of rupture. No worry about stomach acid, no worry about over dosing. It's not unheard of and actually a very start way to move drugs." Kim shrugged looking at her team. "Uh I thought I had seen everything." Al spoke up surprised by this. "Yeah. I have seen it in New York a few times. Why they killed her I don't know. They don't normally kill their mules unless they refused to continue bringing drugs into the country." Kim explained.
"Well let's look into this then. Sounds like we have enough to investigate this theory before we hand over the evidence. Let's get to work!" Voight ordered and the teams broke off to work the limited information they had. "Well you seriously keep surprising me. New York was really a hell hole huh?" Halstead asked working with his partner. "Yeah. It was pretty shitty. The crime was unreal. Always a new case that shocked the hell out of you. Always something more horrible than the rest. Hence one of the many reasons I needed to leave. Thankfully I haven't had to deal with gangs turning on the cops here. And I don't work for a corrupt unit so that's a bonus. Oddly enough it's just safer here." She always knew New York was crazy horrible but her time there showed just how nasty it could be.
All the teams were working hard on different leads even if it technically wasn't there case. Kim noticed people in their phones, people adding things to the white board. She didn't pay attention to what exactly because they, she and Jay had their own thing to follow up on. She was surprised when her phone rang but was happy to see it was Adam. "Hey did your lead pan out?" She asked knowing this was professional time. "Um yeah I'm not calling about that." He sounded pissed off, maybe at her. "Okay so what's up?" She pointed to the break room to Jay. He could hear the concern in her voice and waved her to go. "So Upton just called me. Saying you and Halstead are acting pretty close. Insinuating that something was happening between you two." He was angry but not at her, not really. "Are you kidding me right now? You know I love you! You know Jay and I work well together. This is insane! I can't believe you would even believe that for one second!" She yelled before opening the door pointing to both Erin and Jay to follow her. "Look hold on before we continue this stupid ass fight!" She placed her phone on speaker and put it on the table. "Now tell me why you believe some stupid ass shit that Upton spewed!" Kim knew the other two had no clue what was happening but they would know now.
"Look I know great you are! Others know it to. I can't lose you even if it is to one of my best friends! Come on Kim! You know how I feel about you and the kids and to hear you look all cosy with Jay flipped me out." Both Jay and Erin looked shocked. "Okay hold up Ruzek! Nothing is going on between myself and Kim. I admire her greatly for all her has done and gone through. But I love Erin and our child. If Upton saw something from how Kim and I work together that's on her. If anyone should have been pissed is Er and she's not." Jay has no problem jumping in the conversation. He was ending this once and for all. "Yeah I didn't see anything concerning. I sit right across from them and nothing that bothered me. So this isn't on any of us. It's on Upton. Bitch her out not the three of us. We don't deserve it." Erin knew exactly what had happened without too much extra information. She knew how girls like that worked.
"I'm sorry. I really am. I freaked out. It was a bad morning with Bob and now this. I let my emotions get the best of me. I truly am sorry. Please believe me." She could hear the sadness rush over him. "Well we forgive you and leaving you two to figure it out." Jay and Erin left after that. "Let me deal with Upton please?" Kim asked before they shut the door. They both nodded. "Listen Adam. I get where you are coming from. I really do. But next time try to remember that I opened up to you about everything. I share my bed with you. I allow my kids to be around you. I allowed myself to fall in love with you. That should speak volumes to you over whatever else some dumb blonde thinks. Now get back here so we can take a lunch together to fix this and move forward. Okay?" She wanted off the phone. She had a blonde to punch. "Okay see you soon. I love you." He whispered sounding defeated. "I love you too." Kim hung up and threw the break room door open.
Everyone looked up and the commotion. Even Voight came out to see what happened. "I'm going to make this crystal clear. You got something to say about me, say it to me face! Not behind my back like some little scared bitch! You fuck with me and you aren't going to like what happens next. You fuck with Adam and I will fuck you up." Kim moved closer to Upton with each word. "You try to start some shit involving multiple people in this room and I will wreck you and your job. Do I make myself clear?" Her eyes cold and hard and Upton seemed to cower slightly. "You call Adam and make up some shit again about myself and Jay or any other person in this room and they will be picking your teeth up from the floor with your unconscious body next to it. Stay away from me and my life." Kim retreated after that. She went towards the locker room and no one followed.
"Okay this ends now! No more bickering! No more childish bullshit! This is a team of elite cops! You keep this shit up you will be on foot beat for the rest of your career. No more!" Voight yelled loudly before returning to his office. "Just for the record I admire Kim as a colleague and friend. I admire her work ethic and the fact that she is a single mother raising two small children on her own. She's a total badass. You are just jealous." Jay stated harshly. "And if I thought that something was happening with them I would have said something. Pregnant or not I would have flipped my lid. But I didn't. You need to stop picking this team apart. We are a family, we have each other's backs. And quite frankly you haven't proved yourself to this unit. That's your problem not ours." Erin moved to the break room needing a drink and to calm down.
"Well I heard Erin's response so I'm not flipping right now. Where's Kim?" Adam asked running up the stairs. "Locker room." Jay replied knowing they needed to talk. "Thanks man and sorry." Adam answered sheepishly. Jay waved it off. He would have acted the same so he wasn't fazed by it. Adam ran to the locker room needing to get to Kim as quick as possible. He found her sitting on the bench head in her hands. "Hey." He walked over slowly not sure what she was thinking. "Hey." She barely looked up. "Can I hold you please?" He was able to pick her up off the bench. "I'm so sorry darling! I should have known better. You were not in the wrong, I was. Totally my fault." He whispered every word holding her so close there was no space between them. "The whole thing with pops and then Upton calling. I lost my mind and it wasn't fair to you at all. You didn't do anything wrong and I know that. I knew that. Please forgive me. Please." It was their first real fight and he had shown the not so nice side of himself. The side he never wanted her to see.
"I do forgive you but you need to understand we all have bad days. We all have things going on and we can't just assume the worst about each other. That's how this doesn't work out. And for the record I really do want this to work out. So we need to work on this going forward. I know we will have bumps in the road, times when things get rough but we need to trust in each other and believe in the other for this to work." She pulled back to look in his eyes wanting to see the emotions in them. The eyes never lied and his shined bright with sadness. He truly was sorry. "I promise you I will work on this. I promise I will get better. Now tell me what's going on besides this. The way you said we all have things going on leads me to believe something happened this morning before work. So what is it?" He was pushing her but he knew something was off. He had felt it that morning but she pushed it aside for him.
"I got served with legal papers this morning. I'm not surprised but I'm definitely annoyed by it. Luckily my lawyer is all over it and doesn't see any issues. But I threw out some demands to make this stop happening. I'm over it at this point." Kim sighed heavily pulling away to sit down again. Adam knelt before her. "What legal papers? And from who?" He had no idea she still had legal problems so he was caught off hairs. "My out laws are contesting the child support agreement. They want me to prove once again my kids were fathered by my ex husband. Stating the lab was compromised. And then they are suing for grand parents rights if it's found they are the grandparents. I basically told my lawyer to tell them hell no! They aren't seeing my children who they never cared about anyway. And if they don't stop with all this legal shit I will re-instate the attempted rape charges against their son. I also said when it comes back he is the father I want 7k a month instead of 3. This way I can plan for college for them. And I can afford to get them some things they need." She dropped her head into her hands again.
"First off what the actual fuck? Who the hell are these people to pull shit like that. And good for you for fighting back. They sound like terrible people to me. So I can't wait till they lose in court again. Though I doubt it will make it to court. Sounds like it could get thrown out easily. But the legal fees add up no matter what. Is your lawyer good?" He heard Kim laugh so he looked up seeing her smiling again. "He's the former ADA for Manhattan SVU. Yeah he's good. He's a great guy, big heart, not afraid to get dirty. He's been amazing. But yes it gets costly. I think he was going to ask for my legal fees to be covered this time by the out laws since it's frivolous and shouldn't have been filed at all. But you can sue for just about anything these days, so here we are." She shrugged a bit. "I dint have to be worried about losing you to him do I?" It was clearly a joke. "Nope I think he likes Olivia but she's into someone else. It's dramatic and exhausting." That got him laughing. "Anyone I would know?" He asked only because he knew Olivia and her team. "Nope he's been in Italy for 10 years I think. He came back to visit a couple years ago and his wife was murdered. Some really bad people put out a hit on her to make him pay. It was very ugly and very sad. He and Liv were parents for 13 years before he left. It broke her for a while from what I hear." His eyes were flashing with so many mixed emotions.
He had no idea how to respond so he just held her hands and kissed her forehead. Letting his lips linger for a bit feeling her relax under his touch. "You want to stay here a bit longer or maybe we could head to lunch. I think we could all use a break." He saw her eyes light up with the mention of food. "Lunch it is!" He laughed seeing her expression. He held out his hand for her to take before leading her back to the bullpen. Adam poked his head in Voights office. "Hey boss can we uh head to lunch? I think we just need some time." He stated knowing Kim was still ready to hurt Upton. "Both of you take the rest of the day. Kims info panned out. We are tossing the case back. Everyone is just finishing up before leaving as well. Take care of each other." Voight nodded knowing they both had a bad day. "Hey let's go home. We got the rest of the day to relax." Adam whispered to Kim. "Sounds good but can I ride for a bit. I just need to clear my head and it always helps." She looked up with hope in her eyes. "Of course to the stables we go." They waved bye to everyone but Upton as they headed out for the night.
The couple left the district hand in hand. Neither smiling but they were happy to put some distance between them and Upton. After the last fight she had been working out so this was frustrating for all of them. But she kept going after Kim which made the entire situation worse. It was only once they reached the car that they shared a very passionate kiss. "Stables, lunch then my place?" He asked still holding her face close. "Sounds perfect let's head out." Kim kissed him softly before getting in the car. He rushed around to jump in beside her. The trip was silent but still comfortable. And thankfully not a very long ride at that. They headed into the stable greeting the stable manager before Kim was set up with a horse that was available. She happily rode around the ring enjoying the clarity it brought her. Adam stood outside the ring watching her. Taking a few photos sending them to the team. He was surprised by how just watching her calmed him as well.
The hour rolled by quickly before she was heading back into the stables to dismount the horse. She pet the horse and gave him a few treats before she headed out of the barn. She found Adam waiting next to the car. "Hey sorry. Couldn't take the smell much longer." He laughed slightly. "Yeah I get that. It takes a while to get used to it. Ready to go?" She watched him nod slightly opening the door for her. Once she was inside safely he heading around the car taking his place next to her again. They headed to a small diner near his place that he went to often. They found a small booth towards the back where they could have some privacy. "Today was rough. I'm really sorry for how it all played out. It was never my intention to get angry with you. I know we will have rough patches where we will get angry but this shouldn't have been one of them. I really hope that you truly forgive me. I never want you to doubt me or us for that matter." He looked down, disappointment all over his face.
"I do forgive you. I really do. I know you have trust issues from the past that will rear its ugly head every now and then but just know I would never cheat on you. Never. Especially with someone we work with and who is your friend. Even if we broke up I would never go after Jay or anyone we work with. That's off limits. My rule has a,ways been not to date someone you work with but obviously that failed." She pointed at him causing him to laugh. "I know that. It was just strange having her call me. Talking about soft touches, smiles and laughing. It caught me off guard you know." He paused looking towards her. "No soft touches. Maybe a brush of a shoulder when reaching for something but definitely not soft touches. No laughing either. Smiles sure. I mentioned how rough New York was and why I had to get away. He agreed I made the right call. I smiled at that. Hearing confirmation that I did the right thing is always helpful. But no interest in him as anything more than my friend and colleague. I promise you that." They were both smiling now, holding hands as they ordered food.
"What's gonna happen with your dad?" She asked shyly hoping to not upset him further. "Voight said he and Platt would handle it. That he would need to pay back the money he owes but that they would get him the help he needs to get better. I just have to trust in them now to make this right. And hope they don't come after me or something to get it. That's always been my fear with his gambling debts. It's out of control. He missed so much of my life because he was gambling. You know he told me once that he stayed on patrol so he could be at my games and coach my little league. But it's not true. Platt told me that pops used to go in every day after my games talking about how great I did. Rattling off the stats. But it was all lies. It's hard knowing that now. I didn't understand it then but I get it now. I never want to be like that with my kids, with your kids. I want them to always know I'm there for them. And I promise to show up for them every time." His head was hung low with that admission. It literally broke Kim's heart.
"I know you will never be like him. You have already proven that to my babies and you have proven that to me. I know you are a better man than him. You prove it everyday with the amazing cop and amazing man you are. That's why we love you so very much." She caressed his face lovingly. "I love you too so very much." He leaned back as their food arrived. They ate quietly as they held hands. Sharing glances when they thought the other wasn't looking. Their cheeks tinting when they caught the other one staring. It was sweet and adorable almost like when you are out with your first crush. The nervousness, being shy, coy almost, not sure what will happen next or how far it could go. But in this instance it allowed for the tension to build,d between them. The sexual tension that had been building for a while now as they haven't much time alone together.
As they left the restaurant they headed to Adams apartment. They normally went to Kim's but they really wanted some alone time. No one watching them, no one asking questions, no time spent worrying the kids would walk in. They needed this time to just be alone.
