It had been a few weeks since the couple decided to move in together. The kids were ecstatic to hear that Adam would be living them going forward. Both kids had taken to having a positive father figure in their lives. They looked to him when they were sad or scared. They loved that he was willing to play with them all the time. That he took an interest in how their days went and that he showered them with praise when they made art projects for him. He truly felt like this was his family, the family he wasn't sure he would ever have. He had been so scared of turning out like his parents. But he hadn't. He learned from their mistakes so be a better father, a better partner and a better man. The whole family seemed to blossom together and just functioned as a family day in and day out. They had even started looking for a new home. They hadn't found the right one just yet but they still had just over 5 months to figure it out.

The couple had an extra half hour this morning after dropping off the kids at day care. They heads to a local coffee shop close to the district. They were picking up coffee for the entire team when Kim noticed a woman walking down the sidewalk doubled over in pain. "Adam call for an ambo please!" Kim ran to help the woman who was crying in pain. "Miss! I'm Kim. I'm a police officer. I'm here to help you. My partner already called for paramedics. Can you tell me where it hurts?" Kim asked helping her in a bench. "My belly hurts really bad." The woman groaning in pain. "Okay can you tell me your name?" Kim asked feeling Adam next to her again. "Emily." She groaned out loudly. "Any chance you are pregnant?" Kim asked knowing this could be a lot of things but it would be helpful for paramedics to know. "I don't know!" She screamed out as blood started gushing from her core area. "Okay so I think you might be having a miscarriage right now. But the paramedics are almost here and they will get you fixed up. You are going to be okay." Kim tried to assure her.

"God this hurts so dam much!" She screamed. "I know! But I promise help it almost here. I see them coming now." Kim held her hand letting her squeeze it as hard as possible. "What do we have?" Brett asked as she ran over. "Um female names Emily, seems like she's having a miscarriage. Seems early in the pregnancy. But doubled over in pain. Screaming, blood coming from the vaginal region." Kim explained as they worked on her. "Okay we got her. Thanks for calling it in." Brett took Emily to the rig and they were gone. Adam hugged Kim and led her to work. The coffees were cool but this had been more important. They headed in to the district rushing knowing they were late already. Platt giving them dirty looks. "Sorry we are late!" Kim stated as they entered the bullpen.

"It's okay! Adam let us know what was going on. You did the right thing helping that woman." Voight wasn't upset in the least about it. "Thank you it just seemed like she really needed help and she was alone. I went on instinct. Just hope she's okay." Kim shrugged watching Adam pass out the coffee to the team. "I will have Will look into it." Jay offered knowing it would bother Kim all day if she didn't know what happened to the woman. "Thank you! I appreciate that!" Kim nodded as she listened to details of the current case. "So we have had three complaints to different districts all about the same doctor. Complaints of malpractice. So we are looking into this." Voight started to explain. "Malpractice how?" Kim asked unsure what was happening. "These are photos of the three families that complained. See anything wrong?" He asked letting them see the photos. "Wait three redheads? That's abnormal. So people think they received donor sperm not the husbands?" Kim asked looking shocked. "That's exactly what they think happened! Hence why it was brought to us." Voight looked around the room.

"So I need you guys to figure this out. We don't have enough for a warrant yet. So look into this guy." Voight stated. "So something similar happened a couple times in New York. It wasn't my cases, they were before I even became a cop. But in both cases that I know of the doctor was using his own sperm to impregnate these woman. Is it possible to get a look at his billing? His financial statements for the business? We need to see if he stop testing for STD's. That's how they got busted in New York." Kim asked not sure if they could get a judge to sign off on it. "We can try. None of that should be confidential so it's possible. Keep digging into other complaints against the business and take to these three families. Ask for their permission to access their medical records." Voight heading into the office to call about a warrant.

The teams split up working each angle trying to figure this out and fast before it affects more innocent lives. Kim and Jay returned from talking to one of the families as they saw Al and Adam returning from talking to another. "Hey Kim can we talk for a minute?" Adam asked as he crossed the parking lot. "Yeah! Jay I will meet you inside." Kim watched as he nodded and left the couple to talk in semi private. "What's up?" She asked unsure what was going on. "You told me if I'm ever spinning just ask you. Don't let it fester all day." He watched confusion come over her face. "So this morning the way you spoke with Emily it sounded like you knew what she was going through. You said I know when she screamed in pain. I'm sure if that's true you would rather not talk about it but I need to know." He pleased with his eyes.

"Um wow okay. You are right I would rather not talk about it. But yes it has happened. And yes it was horribly painful. But it's kind of a longer story but how about we talk tonight after work and not here in the parking lot." Kim watched the understanding wash over his face. "Of course. And I'm so sorry you had to go through that." He hugged her tight before they headed back to work. The teams broke off again looking into different angles. "Everything okay?" Jay asked hoping things were okay for them. "Yeah he was spinning about this morning. And needed to ask something private. So he asked instead of stewing all day. Which is what I asked him to do. Stewing and spinning helps no one." Kim watched Jay nod as they continued to work on the case.

"Burgess! Here's your warrant for the financials. Head out and grab them." Voight handed her the paper as she and Jay exited the bullpen. "I'm happy you two are working through whatever it is. Whatever this is seems to be on his mind but he handled it better than he has in the past. That's good for you both." Jay wasn't pushing but he wanted her to know he was proud of how they handled this tiny bump. "Yeah the last time he was stewing it was pretty nasty but we worked through it. I get he has trust issues. And so do I. So we have to work together, communicate together. It's process. But even in the rough times I still know it's worth it. My home is filled with love, laughter, happiness. My heart is filled with love, happiness, hope. I'm not walking on eggshells anymore. I'm not waiting for the explosion. The small bumps are worth fighting through." She explained sounding almost sappy and love sick. "That's great! Truthfully we all think you guys are good together. And you guys are learning to love again. He hasn't dated since Wendy." He wasn't sure if she knew that. "They dated when he was a rookie right? How long has he been a cop?" Kim was slightly confused. "6 years. Why?" Now he was confused.

"We saw her recently at the district. She said he moved on quickly. He snapped at her saying she'd been gone for years. I guess I'm just not sure why she's coming around again." She shrugged. "I think she's crazy to be honest. I wouldn't worry too much about her. He really doesn't care about her." Jay shrugged as they arrived at the doctors office. They entered the office going straight to the reception desk demanding the financial records for the business. With the warrant they received the records pretty quickly. They headed back to the district, Kim was already paging through the records. "Okay so it looks like he hasn't been paying for donor samples and hasn't been paying for testing. God how many kids are out there? They are going to end up in the same schools. This could actually lead to inbreeding. This is a big problem." Kim looked on in dismay. "I hear ya. We will figure this out. We have no choice!" Jay assured her as he drove.

They headed inside documents in hand ready to finish this case and get this doctor closed down. "Okay so he's not paying for donors and he's not doing testing! The only reason you wouldn't test is because you know for sure the samples are clean. And only way to know they are clean is to use your own!" Jay stated as he walked in. "Kim also brought up a good point. All these kids could end up in the same schools. Which could create inbreeding issues." Jay looked over at Kim. "Just something I've seen before. A man who had a family, a wife and son. He has a side chick who he had two kids with. The son and the daughter from the side chick ended up in the same school. Same class. They fell in love, dated, had sex and got pregnant. Causing all kinds of other issues. But this is what happens when you use the same sperm donor too many times. This is not good!" Kim explained.

"Alright guys it's late. I will call the ADA and have him here tomorrow to go over what we have learned. Hopefully this is enough to shut him down while we keep investigating. Go home, get rest!" Voight yelled out. The team got their things and headed out. Adam was right behind Kim the whole way. They knew they needed to talk and it wouldn't be easy but this was how they worked through it. "You want me to drive?" He asked holding on to her hand. "Sure that's fine." Kim smiled letting him have the keys to her car. "Did you hear anything about that woman from this morning?" He asked knowing she was thinking about it. "No I didn't. I will text Jay." Kim pulled out her phone to text Jay hoping to hear something. He called right away. "Hey sorry forgot to let you know but Emily is okay. You were right. She apparently knew she was pregnant and had gotten the abortion pill. She was out walking when it kicked in. But she's okay and should be released tomorrow." He explained to the couple. "That's great! I'm happy to hear that! Thanks for letting me know!" They hung up shortly after.

"I know the kids are about to go to bed. So let's get them settled and then we can enjoy the outside and talk." He watched her nod a bit. They got home to two very excited kids running towards them screaming in excitement. The couple couldn't help but laugh. They needed this after today. They played games for a bit before taking them to bed. They were crashed out as they were carried up the stairs. After they were placed in their crib the couple headed back down the stairs and outside. It was easier to talk in the darkness. Not seeing the looks on Adam's face when she tells him the horror of her life. They got comfortable on the outdoor couch Kim had bought so they could snuggle outside together. "You want to talk about it?" Kim asked quietly. "Yeah I think we need to. Just so I'm aware." He kissed the side of her head. "Okay so I was actually 19. I had been seeing this guy, nothing serious but dating. I was having really bad pains in my abdomen. It was a pain I had never felt before so I went to the hospital." She took a deep breath.

"Um the ran a bunch of tests finding that I was pregnant. But unfortunately having a miscarriage. When they did the ultrasound they found the fetus was in the fallopian tube. So it was a blessing in disguise that I was miscarrying. I had to have the fetus removed obviously. I know most people would have been devastated with a miscarriage but I wasn't ready to be a mom. I wasn't in a stable relationship and if I hadn't miscarried it could have ruptured the fallopian tube. Truth be told I wouldn't have gone through with the pregnancy anyway. I just wasn't in a good place for that then." Kim shrugged but was afraid to look back at Adam. "I'm not sure how to respond. But it sounds like it worked out for the best at that point in life. And just know I'm not upset with what you told me. At 19 I would have agreed with you 100%. We are good. Did you ever grieve the loss?" He wondered how she handled it at that point in life. "Not sure I did. I think I was just so relieved that my life wasn't over and that I didn't need a surgery to repair the damage." She felt his grip get tighter and his lips placing kisses on her head.

"You did good Kim! Life did you wrong but you just keep rolling, keep punching. You are amazing!" He loved this crazy strong woman in his arms. "You did too! I can ask about Wendy? I heard you have been a cop for 6 years. So why would she say you moved on quickly?" She asked knowing it had been on her mind for a bit. "That's correct. All 6 years in Intelligence. I'm not sure I understand her motives. Her kid is what 5 now. I don't get it. I really don't. Where did that come from?" He was very curious about that. "Jay and I were talking about how even with the bumps in the road I still think this is worth it. And I mentioned that we both have trust issues but this is still worth it to me. I asked about Wendy since he knew you when you were with her. I wonder his opinion on her. For the record, he thinks she's nuts!" Kim laughed a little. "This is worth it! Completely worth it. And for the record I think she's nuts too!" Adam laughed knowing it was the truth.

"Should we head to bed?" Kim asked quietly. "Sure I think we could use some snuggles." He helped her up and followed her up the stairs. They checked in on the kids to make sure they were still asleep before heading in to their room. "Let's just relax a bit. Enjoy each other's company. Maybe some skin on skin. I think we both need quiet time." He watched her nod as she got undressed and got into bed. He striped down and wrapped his body around hers. "Thank you for being so open and honest earlier I know it was rough but I appreciate you trusting me with that." He whispered knowing she needed to hear it. "I've told no one before. I didn't want the shame of it. You know in certain states I would be arrested now for what happened. Arrested for murder. It's scary to think about." Kim whispered in response. "And that is just crazy! It's Mother Nature. It just happens some times. You didn't cause it. So you have nothing to be ashamed of. I promise you. I don't think any different of you. It just happens." He kissed her softly.

He felt Kim crying softly but he knew it wasn't sad tears it was tears of healing. Tears of relief for letting out the long held onto secret. He was happy she was letting out the pain that plagued her for so long. But now she was free from another hold on her life. While it hurt him to hear her story he was happy to know she was letting him in more everyday. It wasn't long till the tears dried and her breathing evened out. He was happy she allowed sleep to take over once more. He gave her one more kiss before he fell asleep as well. While the bumps still came up for the couple they seemed to be smaller waves. The couple was determined to make it even more now knowing this deep secret was out in the open.
