Remus opened The Moon Den, his chocolate shop and bakery, with a flourish, rubbing his hands together with eager anticipation. He had spent the last two hours carefully arranging truffles, bonbons, and pastries of all kinds in tantalizing displays, and now that the customers would soon begin to arrive, he could almost feel the energy of his shop coming to life. A smile crept across his face as he realized that soon enough, Rolanda would be among them.
It had been five years since the day they first stepped foot into the shop in a simple black dress covered in brightly covered berries and a button that announced their pronouns plainly. Since that day, they had been visiting every Friday without fail. They always wore their best outfit which always had some kind of print on the fabric, usually something edible or nature themed. Around Halloween, the prints tended towards cartoonishly spooky. And most notably, around High Holy Days, the prints reflected the common themes of those days such as yellow citrons around Sukkot or dreidels around Hanukkah. Their heart was always filled with the same excitement it had the first time they had come in. They were always so elegant and beautiful, like a hawk circling overhead. Remus couldn't help but feel a flutter in his chest when he saw them.
He had been nursing a crush on Rolanda for years, ever since he had realized that they were also Jewish. But he had never mustered up the courage to tell them to even celebrate the Sabbath with him, too scared of being rejected and losing a loyal customer to boot.
But what Remus didn't know was that he wasn't alone. Rolanda felt the same way. Their own feelings had grown stronger over time, and they yearned to tell him the truth, but they feared it could ruin the friendship they had developed. Not to mention that The Moon Den was the only kosher bakery in the small Welsh village. Where else were they going to get chocolate-covered blackberry jammy dodgers that tasted almost exactly like their bubbe's?
The door of the shop opened, and Remus's heart skipped a beat. His heart nearly stopped as he saw Rolanda standing there, looking more beautiful than ever and wearing a berry red dress with garden snakes eating pineapples of all things. Over the outfit, they had on a violet windbreaker. They smiled at him shyly, and Remus smiled back. He felt as if he had been waiting for this moment for an eternity, and now that it had finally arrived, he felt a surge of joy and excitement.
Remus knew today was the day he would finally tell Rolanda how he felt.
