Tentacles & Love
(^^)
Fred dropped onto the soft ground of the greenhouse where he and his twin were allegedly working on extra credit for Herbology. In actuality, what they were doing was helping Sprout maintain her persnickety Venomous Tentacula who had taken a liking to the Weasley twins back in their first year. In exchange, the professor gave them a percentage of what she earned selling the harvest each year.
Well, and extra credit in Herbology. They weren't fools, after all, no matter what their mother thought.
"I'm in love," Fred announced. George paused in his efforts to convince the Tentacula to weave around the trellis he had created for it. That was the only sign of surprise that he gave. To be fair, George usually noticed things like that before Fred did.
"Who is it this time?" George questioned as he returned to his efforts. Fred continued to languish in despair as he stared at the glass ceiling of the green house.
"With Lee," he answered with a dramatic sigh. "Who else?"
"You're kidding," George replied without any bite. "Just last month, you were giggling in corners with Angelina. The month before that it was—oh, whatever their name is from Ravenclaw—"
"Penny," Fred supplied. He gave another sigh, this one dreamy. "He was nice, yeah."
"And last year, it was Alicia and Katie."
"I think they were just using me for my body."
"Is that why they're now exclusive?" George jumped back as the Tentacula took a sudden snap at him. "Anyway, my point is that it was a valid question. Your heart's focus is about as committed as a gnome trying to ride a chicken."
"No, I'm serious this time," Fred argued. "I love Lee so much that I can't even tell xem. If I did, it would ruin our friendship."
"That's too bad." George picked up a mermaid doll off a nearby table where Fred had laid out several toys just for this purpose and offered it to the plant. One vine curled around it eagerly. Two more vines came towards him, clearly wanting their own toys. Obligingly, George handed over a large lavender teddy bear and another doll, this one with articulated limbs that made it posable. "I would hate to have to murder you for hurting xem, though, so I guess it does work out."
"Yeah, I guess it does." Fred sighed again. "It would be worth it, though."
At that moment, the door to the greenhouse opened, and Lee stepped in. Xe had the most surprised look on xyr face. Xe was staring at Fred like he was something new and impossible. Fred and George both looked at each other, then back at xem, their faces turning as red as their hair.
"Hi, guys," Lee said after the silence had lingered just long enough to have become strained. Fred covered his face with his hands. George rubbed the back of his neck nervously.
"Uh, hi, Lee," George stammered. He eyed his twin who was still laying on the ground with his face covered. He did not appear like he was going to stop hiding any time soon. "Fancy seeing you here. So, um, how much did you hear by chance?"
"Oh, not much," Lee said casually. Xe fidgeted with xyr dreadlocks, a telltale sign that xe was just as nervous as the twins were. "I just heard Fred say he was in love with me. That's all. I definitely didn't hear the death threat."
Fred dropped his hands to stare at Lee. George took the bite of a vine that had decided he was taking too long to give it a toy like he had the others. He barely felt it, too stunned by the drama unfolding before his eyes.
"It's okay if you don't really feel that way," Lee said in a rush. "I know you. Even if we try and next week you have another love of your life, we'll be just fine. I just wanted you to know that I feel the same."
Fred and George looked at each other again, their eyes filled with surprise and joy. Fred jumped to his feed and took a step towards Lee.
"You do?" Fred asked. Lee smiled, a brilliant flash of white teeth.
"Yes," xe confirmed. Fred slowly walked towards xem and took xyr hand in his. Lee looked from their joined hands back to Fred's face. "I love you, Fred."
"I love you, too."
The room was filled with a new kind of energy. George couldn't help but smile at the sight of his twin and best friend finally finding each other.
With that, a new chapter had begun, one full of unexpected love and friendship.
Right after they all made a very necessary trip to the hospital wing for antivenom.
