A/N: Hey, guys! In the previous chapter, Mario had to deal with a peculiar situation with Donkey Kong, who caused problems after Bowser destroyed all his Minis. This chapter will be a MAR10 Day special! I thank Peachy-Author for inspiring me with a comment during our conversation after I published Chapter 8. Follow her stories as well. Let's begin.
Chapter 21: MAR10? How about MAR10 Bros?
(''Ending Demo- Super Mario 64 OST'')
It was a Thursday afternoon like any other in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario and Luigi had just defeated Bowser and rescued Princess Peach as usual. The battle had been difficult, and Mario was struggling, but Luigi had noticed a statue on a high ledge in the room and pushed it, knocking it over Bowser's head and knocking him out.
Of course, Peach had thanked them both with a kiss on the cheek, but the cheering Toads paid no attention to Luigi at all.
''You're the best, Mario!''
''You're just unbeatable!''
''No one can stop you!''
''You're amazing, Mario!''
''Long live Mario!''
Luigi shook his head silently, eyes closed and arms folded as he heard the usual Toads screaming. He expected that, because it always happened like this, and he always felt that he didn't have the resolve to say what he thought.
This time, Mario had tried to say something, but no one heard him because the cheering crowd was making too much noise. He looked at Peach, and she bowed her head puzzledly.
Luigi sighed. He had never been considered equal to Mario, and that didn't change over time.
As usual when rescued, Peach threw a party in Mario's honor. She always invited Luigi to these parties, but he always ended up on the sidelines or got separated from his brother because of the cheering crowd.

(''Peach's Castle- Mario & Luigi Paper Jam Bros. OST'')
That evening, Mario was talking to Luigi in the courtyard. ''Hey, Luigi. You did great today.'' he said, but Luigi said nothing. He just nodded. ''To use that statue like this... It was brilliant.''
''You say?'' asked Luigi.
''Yes! You're the one who defeated Bowser. You should be taken more into account.'' Mario said.
''I don't think it's going to change things, Mario. And I'm used to it anyway,'' his brother told him.
The conversation was interrupted by several Toads who walked out the door.
''Mario! The party is about to start, come inside!'' said a small group of Toads.
''I'll be there shortly. I was talking to my brother.'' Mario told them.
''Come on, the princess is waiting for you!'' said other Toads.
''I know, but give me some time first.''
But the Toads seemed either overly excited or too impatient for this, and the plumber in red ended up getting separated from his brother.
''Hey! What?!'' exclaimed Luigi, surprised. ''Mario, wait for me!''
''Luigi!'' exclaimed Mario. ''Please, let go!'' He was taken inside the castle, leaving his younger brother perplexed but a little hurt.
Luigi wasn't particularly fond of Peach's parties. It wasn't because he didn't like her parties in general, though. She was a good friend, yes, and if she always invited him, then she recognized his role, but he always felt like a stranger to these parties. Whenever he tried to talk to Mario, they were separated mid-conversation or before they could start talking, and he always sat down with Peach. Those parties were for Mario, and as a result, he always felt unwelcome. He also felt out of place in the midst of all the red in the room when there were the usual parties.
It wasn't the first time this had happened, but Luigi, finding himself isolated from Mario, took his slice of cake and sat down alone. Eventually, he got tired of waiting, and after eating, he left the party prematurely. Almost no one noticed.
Meanwhile, after much insistence, Mario was talking to Peach and Starlow.
''I wonder how Luigi is doing.'' Peach said.
''Oh, he's fine.'' replied Mario. ''You know, he did a great job against Bowser.''
''I thought he was hiding like a coward at first, but imagine my surprise when he pushed that statue and knocked out Bowser with it! That was clever of him, I have to admit.'' said Starlow.
''Speaking of Luigi... where did he go?'' asked Mario, not seeing Luigi anywhere. ''He was there a moment ago.''
Daisy was also present at the party. She had gone to look for Luigi, but she couldn't find him anywhere. ''Have you seen Luigi?'' he asked Peach and Toad.
''I haven't seen him since he got the slice of cake.'' Peach said.
''I haven't seen him either.'' Mario added.
''I saw him leave the castle a little while ago.'' said Toad. ''He left the party without saying anything to anyone.''
''He's already gone?!'' Daisy exclaimed.
''It's not the first time this has happened.'' Mario replied.
''I suppose you know something about it,'' Daisy said irritably. ''Right, Mr. Legendary Celebrity?''
'Do I detect a note of accusation in your words?'' asked Peach.
''Ask him.'' the princess of Sarasaland said.
''And what do you mean by that, Daisy?'' asked Mario.
''I want an explanation, Mario. Surely you are too busy basking in your fame to pay attention to your brother. Heck, I'd think you want to keep him in your shadow.'' Daisy accused him. ''You already have a day named after you, which is in three days, by the way, what else do you want to take away from him, you entitled braggart?!''
(''Peach's Castle- Mario & Luigi Paper Jam Bros. OST-s'')
Mario immediately clenched his hand into a fist and glared at Daisy. ''Who did you take me for?! How can you insinuate such a thing?!'' he blurted out, angry at what he was getting into. ''I'm not such a swagger that I don't give credit where it's due. If Luigi doesn't get credit for what he does and isn't considered a hero, ask others for an explanation. Don't blame me!''
''Yeah, Daisy, don't start with this. It's not Mario's fault that Luigi isn't considered a hero on par with him.'' Peach said. ''If that's the problem, you'll be there ranting about it until we become old. And anyway, we were talking about Luigi. Mario didn't talk about anything but him.''
''If you want to say things to my face, go ahead, but don't let yourself question my bond with Luigi!'' added Mario. ''You can say I'm too famous for my own good, and maybe you can tell me I didn't do enough to help Luigi, but I do NOT accept you saying that I treat him poorly, that I'm an arrogant showboater or that I want the spotlight for myself!''
Caught off-guard by his anger, the princess of Sarasaland changed her tone, realizing that she had touched a nerve. ''I'm sorry, Mario. I don't know what came over me.'' she apologized. But he looked at her with obvious disapproval in his face, then left without another word, leaving her guilty.
''Give him time. He'll calm down.'' Peach said.
''I don't blame him for being mad at me. I shouldn't have said these things. I need some fresh air.'' Daisy told her, and she too left the castle.
Yoshi had seen both Luigi leaving and the argument between Mario and Daisy, and this led him to wonder what had happened.
(''World 3- Super Mario Galaxy 2 OST'')
That evening, when Luigi prepared pesto for dinner, Mario noticed that he had put less pasta than usual, and he was even more worried when he discovered that he had prepared only one plate for him and nothing else. It wasn't normal for him to fast at dinner, especially not when he was usually the one cooking. ''Luigi, are you feeling okay?'' he asked.
''I'm fine.'' Luigi lied.
''Little bro, I know for a fact that something is troubling you.'' Mario told him. ''Is something wrong?''
''It's nothing.'' the man in green said.
''You didn't even prepare food for yourself.''
''I'm not hungry tonight.''
''But it's not healthy for you to eat anything. Here, I'll give you half of my pasta.''
Although he appreciated his brother's kindness, Luigi didn't feel like eating. ''Thank you, but really, I've got not appetite today.'' he said.
''It's not because of what happened today, is it?'' asked Mario.
''Yes. Well, partly.'' replied Luigi.
Mario looked at him puzzled. ''What do you mean?''
''Eat first, then I'll tell you.''
(''World 3- Super Mario Galaxy 2 OST-s'')
(''Sad Song- Super Mario RPG Remake OST'')
The man in red was disappointed by that answer. He hated this atmosphere at home, and he didn't like to eat like this by himself. He couldn't even enjoy his pasta dish, despite the fact that he loved his brother's cooking. When he finally finished eating and they went to their bedroom, he asked for explanations again.
''Now that I'm thinking about tonight's party, I have to tell you something. Please don't get mad at me when I tell you.'' said Luigi.
The older brother was now confused, especially by his sad, sorry tone. ''Tell me.'' he urged him.
''To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of Peach's parties.'' Luigi admitted. Mario looked at him in shock, but said nothing. ''Don't get me wrong, Peach is a good friend, and I appreciate that she always invites me to her parties, but I always feel like I'm unwanted. They're all parties in your honor, after all.''
After this statement, Luigi couldn't look Mario in the face, and turned his back on him. He could imagine the anger on his face... except Mario put his hand on his shoulder and gently turned him around.
''Luigi... you never told Peach, did you?'' asked Mario.
''No!'' Luigi suddenly shouted, then lowered his voice, overcome by another fit of shame. ''I mean, no. What do you think would happen if someone found out? I'm not exactly considered your equal, and I don't want to give everyone another reason to dislike me. I'd hurt Peach's feelings, and I'd be a... persona non grata.'' he explained, again overcome with shame. ''The day that bears your name is in three days, and I don't want to spoil your party.''
''Peach will understand, Luigi. You worry too much about certain things.'' Mario told him.
''I can't help it.'' Luigi told him.
The hero in red was frustrated with the situation. He didn't understand why everyone had a low opinion of his brother's abilities, and he knew what he was referring to: MAR10 Day, also known as Mario Day. But why should he deserve this honour and not Luigi? After all, their last name was literally Mario's first name, and therefore their full names were Mario Mario and Luigi Mario. For this reason, he thought that this national holiday that occurred once a year should be in honor of both of them. ''I don't understand what the others see in you. And some people tell certain false things about us...!'' he complained.
''Why, what happened?'' asked Luigi.
''Daisy accused me of being an showboater and deliberately overshadowing you, that's what!'' Mario shouted.
''You know what Daisy is like. She is not very tactful, and tends to say things without thinking. Just think that even I had to scold her sometimes for being tactless or for misunderstanding the situation.'' Luigi told him.
''I know, but when she says these things, it hurts me. It's as if he's questioning me as a brother. If she mentions what happened at the Power Tennis tournament again, I'm going to scream.''
''Don't remind me, please. I had to bend over backwards to stop her from doing anything drastic that time, she looked like she wanted to kill you.''
''Are you sure you can handle it, Luigi?'' asked Mario.
''I'll make it, I'm used to it.'' Luigi replied, but his tone became insecure. ''At least I think.''
Mario hugged him. ''Don't think about it, Lu. You deserve better than this.'' he told him.
''I appreciate it, Mario. Thank you.'' said Luigi.
''Hey, give me a smile!'' Mario said. Luigi smiled, and his older brother gave him a kiss on the cheek.

(''Grandma's Theme- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker OST'')
Friday March 8 passed quickly, as Mario had spent the day with Peach, but he noticed something wrong with Luigi. Luigi tried not to think about their difference in fame, as Mario wanted, but he didn't look very cheerful. That day, he was sitting on the bed reading, but he seemed uninterested in the book he was reading. Maybe it was his insecurities, but he wasn't willing to say anything to him. He didn't want to burden him with his problems. The younger brother tried not to think about it, but it became difficult. When he was with Mario, he felt safe, but when he was alone, he was negatively affected by his absence. He decided to spend the day with Daisy, but that didn't make him feel that much better than before.
The next day was Saturday. Luigi seemed dull, and he didn't even have the strength to prepare breakfast. His usual uncertainties had overwhelmed him. MAR10 Day was just one day away, and he was always thinking about how he would be received at the party. Even though they were known as the Mario Bros., he knew he wasn't like Mario at all, and he thought that his popularity, the people who cheered him on, the parties in his honor, were all deserved. He didn't want to take anything away from him, nor did he want to be a nuisance.
Mario prepared breakfast for his brother and stayed close to him during the morning, giving him a hug and cuddles. After lunch, he decided to go out to settle the matter, but Luigi was disappointed.
''Mario! Don't go, please!'' Luigi cried.
''Luigi, don't worry. Nothing will happen to me.'' Mario told him.
''But I don't want to be alone...'' Luigi complained.
His older brother stroked his hair. ''I won't be out for too long, I promise.'' he said, reassuringly. ''And if I don't get back in time for dinner, I'll be near here or at Peach's Castle, you know.''
''Are you sure?''
''I'm sure of it. I just have to do some errands for today, but I'll be back later.''
''Alright...''
Mario noticed the sadness in Luigi's tone in these two words. ''Come on, get that frown upside down. If I don't take too long, we'll spend the afternoon together. OK?'' he proposed.
''Okay...''
''Good. Love you, Lu.'' said Mario, and Luigi gave him a kiss on the cheek.
''Love you too, Mario,'' said Luigi. ''Come back soon.''
''I'll see if I can come back when I've finished my errands. See you later, dear brother!''
Mario kissed Luigi on the forehead before leaving.
As Mario left the house, Luigi sighed sadly. It was the usual day. Mario went, sometimes he left him alone in the house and the status quo occurred as usual. He had absolutely nothing against his brother, his fame and reputation were deserved, but he wished to be considered more by others. Even when he did save the Mushroom Kingdom or when saved Mario from King Boo, that didn't change things, as he got attention, but that didn't last more than a week. He tried to distract himself by reading a book, but he couldn't concentrate, gave up and cried silently on his bed.
(''Grandma's Theme- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker OST-s'')
(''Princess Peach's Castle- Super Mario Odyssey OST'')
Mario went to Peach's castle. He didn't want that special day to be just for him. Luigi was better than everyone thought, including Luigi himself. Peach was in the throne room, talking to Daisy. ''Good morning, girls.'' he told them.
''Good morning, Mario,'' Peach said.
''Hey, Mario. How's Luigi?'' asked Daisy.
''To be honest, Luigi didn't seem in a good mood. He was really sad when I left the house a little while ago.'' replied Mario. ''And Daisy, don't blame me, please.''
''I wasn't going to do that. Listen, Mario, I'm sorry for what I said the other night. I was inconsiderate.'' Daisy said.
''I forgive you.'' Mario told her.
''So, Mario, you wanted to tell us something?'' asked Peach.
''Yes, these are important things. MAR10 Day is tomorrow, and I feel like it shouldn't be just for me anymore. Luigi deserves to be included in the festivities dedicated to me, and I'm sick of him not being celebrated like me, especially on March 10th. We're the Mario Brothers, for crying out loud!'' the plumber replied.
''I can't help but say that this has to change. Luigi is always ignored, and not because of his own demerits.'' said Daisy.
''I suppose it is an old story.'' Peach said. ''But there's one thing I have to say. Changing this tradition in that way may not please the Toads if I do it without informing anyone.''
''What about Toadsworth?'' asked Daisy.
''I told him that I had considered the idea yesterday, and he agreed, but he doesn't know how to deal with the Toads. After all, Luigi is always compared to you.''
''Well, to start, let's go get some stuff.''
''It's a good place to start.''
''You know, Peach, Luigi told me something when we got home,'' Mario said.
''What did he say to you?'' asked Peach.
''He told me that he doesn't really love your parties.'' replied Mario. ''He appreciates that you always invite him, but when I'm invited to events like this, it's clear that everyone organizes them in my honor, and that makes him feel unwanted.''
Peach was shocked, not so much by the statement itself, but by how Luigi had never said anything to her. ''And he never said anything to me?''
''No, Peach. He was afraid of how you were going to take it, and he didn't want to hurt your feelings, he was scared to offend you.''
''Oh... When you get home, tell him he didn't hurt my feelings. Being compared to you all the time doesn't have a positive effect on his self-confidence, so I can't blame him for feeling unappreciated.''
Putting the matter aside, they went to buy some green items, including banners and balloons. Mario didn't know if this would change things, but he wanted the message to get across. In the meantime, he sent a call to Professor E. Gadd to let him know. After some time, they decided that what they had taken was enough, and they returned to Peach's castle, then Mario went home.

Meanwhile, Luigi was still waiting for his brother. He had stopped crying, but he was still sad. He had tried to concentrate on other things, but he didn't feel like reading and was bored. He was dangling on the bed when a voice caught his attention.
''Luigi, I'm home!'' Mario called him.
As soon as he heard his brother's voice, Luigi's mood changed, and when Mario entered the bedroom, he grabbed him by the wrists and pulled him into a hug. ''Welcome back, Mario!'' he said.
''Hey, Luigi! You look like you haven't seen me in ages!'' exclaimed Mario, surprised.
''And I missed you! Come here, Mario!'' said Luigi, giving him a kiss on the nose.
''Hey, how about playing Super Mario Bros.?''
''Of course!''
(''Mario Bros.' House- Paper Mario OST-s'')
Mario and Luigi turned on their NES, inserted the Super Mario Bros. cartridge, and chose 2-player mode. The game that started their franchise and saved the entire video game industry was hard, but the games of the time were hard in general to compensate for their short length so that they were worth the price. In two-player mode, the second player couldn't play until Mario lost a life.
(''Ground Theme- Super Mario Bros. OST'')
Anyway, the first few levels were simple, and Mario defeated the first Fake Bowser and saved the first Toad without losing a life, but he had finished the first castle as Small Mario because he accidentally hit a fire bar in the middle of the level. He had completed the first world, but died in level 3 of the second world due to the Cheep Cheeps appearing from below.
''It's your turn, Luigi.'' said Mario.
Luigi did a little better than Mario on the first try. He rescued the Toad, passed the level where Mario had lost his first life, and reached the second castle, where he managed to defeat the Fake Bowser and rescue the second captured Toad, thus accessing World 3.
''So far, so good.'' he said, relieved.
''Great start, Luigi! That's it!'' Mario told him, giving him a thumbs up.
The third world was set at night, and the trees and pipes were white to represent snow. World 3-1 introduced one of the most annoying enemies, Hammer Bros., who not only threw hammers and were difficult to deal with, but were often in pairs. Luigi lost his first life in the first level of the third world, dying against the Hammer Bros. just before the invisible checkpoint.
''Those Hammer Bros. sure are a pain.'' said Luigi, shaking his head.
''Yeah, you're right about that,'' Mario agreed.
It was Mario's turn again. He managed to make it past the second world and surpassed Luigi, but lost another life in the castle of World 3 due to the fire bars, which were located on three platforms separated by bottomless pits.
''What an annoying section...''
Arriving at the third castle, Luigi moved cautiously, avoiding the fire bars in the first half of the level and the Lava Bubbles coming out of the lava towards the end. He saved the third Toad and made it to the fourth world, where he was met with a nasty surprise. World 4-1 introduced Lakitus and Spinies. Lakitus threw Spinies at Mario and Luigi, they were difficult to defeat, and another one would appear shortly after one was defeated.
''Oh, no, not those enemies!'' cried Luigi.
''Don't pay too much attention to the Lakitu. Just try not to get hit by the Spinies and defeat them with fireballs.'' Mario told him.
(''Ground Theme- Super Mario Bros. OST-s'')
(''Underground Theme- Super Mario Bros. OST'')
After barely making it through the level, Luigi also completed the second and final level of the game set underground, World 4-2. Next level was one of Mario and Luigi's favorite levels in the game, World 4-3, which was full of scale platforms that would fall when standing on it for too long, but with a little caution, he managed to get through it without too much trouble. And to think that World 4 was initially supposed to be the first one.(1)
The fourth castle was a maze, introducing forks that forced Luigi to turn back if he took a wrong turn, which the seventh castle also had, but he defeated the Fake Bowser with less than a minute left in the timer and reached the fifth world, which introduced the Bullet Bills. He died in World 5-2 at the hands of the Hammer Bros. shortly after reaching the checkpoint.
Mario managed to complete the third castle and World 4 without losing any lives, but he died in the castle of World 5 due to the fire bars in the middle of the level.
''Grrrr, I was careless!'' he exclaimed.
Luigi defeated the Fake Bowser, but did not make it far, as a Lakitu not far from the starting point in the first level of the sixth world killed him by throwing a Spiny at him before he could cross the first bottomless pit.
The later levels were very difficult, and with 1-Up Mushrooms well hidden and in limited quantities in the game, both Mario and Luigi died a couple of times in both the sixth and seventh worlds. They both lost a life in World 7-3, a more difficult version of World 2-3 with the addition of a few Koopas and Paratroopas, leaving them with only three lives each, and the last Fake Bowser, as well as the real Bowser in the final castle, could throw a volley of hammers.
The eighth and final world was very difficult both for his enemies and for the total absence of checkpoints. The first level of the world was very long, and it had no power-ups. Mario managed to make it through the World 8-1, but lost a life in the next level within just seconds after the starting point because of the Spinies thrown by the Lakitu. Luigi, on the other hand, moved cautiously, but the seconds in the timer decreased faster than in future games, and when he arrived at the blocks just before the Goal Pole, he ran out of time before he could jump and grab the Goal Pole, causing him to lose one of his three lives.
(''Underground Theme- Super Mario Bros. OST-s'')
''No! Not now!'' cried Luigi.
''Too bad, bro. Better next time.'' said Mario.
Neither brother said anything else, but before Mario's turn came, the screen went black.
TIME UP
As was normally the case, these two words appeared on the screen, and then it was Mario's turn.
(''Ground Theme- Super Mario Bros. OST'')
After keeping his distance from the Paratroopas, Mario managed to get past the Lakitu without taking any damage and jumped over it, temporarily knocking it out, overcame a difficult jump in the middle of the level and reached the Goal Pole, reaching World 8-3, set in the outer walls of the last castle.
As the last normal level, the third level of the eighth world was as difficult as you would expect from a final level. It wasn't a long level, but there were no less than eight Hammer Bros, four of which were close together in the second half of the level and separated only by a pipe, plus the blocks suspended in the air before the Goal Pole. The elder brother was unable to get past the Hammer Bros. and died. He had only one life left.
Luigi was nervous, but he managed to overcome the obstacles and bottomless pits in World 8-1 by using running jumps, and since he was Small Luigi in a level with no power-ups, he was forced to be careful. In the second level of the last world, he avoided the Lakitu and took the high road, reaching the finish line successfully. Arriving at the penultimate level, he managed to avoid most of the obstacles, and thanks to the Fire Flower, he managed to defeat most of the Hammer Bros., but he was hit at the end, and not wanting to risk, he went on, reaching the Goal Pole.
''Yes!'' Luigi cheered.
''Keep up the good work, Luigi! You're almost there!'' Mario said happily.
(''Ground Theme- Super Mario Bros. OST'')
(''Castle Theme- Super Mario Bros. OST'')
The last castle was a maze of pipes, including an underwater section filled with Bloopers and fire bars, and the wrong pipes took the player back to the beginning. Luigi struggled to find the right pipe, and by the time he did, it was too late, and he ran out of time. He had lost his penultimate life. Mario managed to complete the two levels before the castle, and also found a 1-Up Mushroom hidden in World 8-2, giving him an extra life and therefore a second chance. He successfully found the right pipe, but because of the Bloopers, he died before reaching the final boss, Bowser.
It was Luigi's turn again. He was only one life away, and the castle was devoid of power-ups, so if he was hit once, it was Game Over for him. Watching Mario play, he quickly spotted the right pipe, reaching the underwater section, which he managed to overcome albeit with difficulty, and realized that he only had 100 seconds left
''Uh-oh! I must hurry!'' he exclaimed.
''Come on, Luigi, you can do it!'' shouted Mario.
Luigi managed to reach Bowser, but struggled to find the timing to make him fall by reaching the axe that destroyed the bridge, as the Koopa King threw several hammers at him, forcing him to keep his distance. Eventually, he had the right opportunity when Bowser jumped, and ran forward. Unfortunately, Bowser landed on top of him, killing him for good.

''NOOOOO! I LOST!'' Luigi screamed in despair, seeing his sprite fall off the screen. The screen went black, showing the Game Over screen.

LUIGI
GAME OVER
These words appeared in the center of the screen. Mario looked at him worriedly. ''It's up to you, Mario.'' Luigi said gloomily when Small Mario's sprite appeared.
Mario didn't say anything. He successfully made it through both the pipe maze and the underwater section, but lost to Bowser, as he had misjudged the timing of his jump and landed on a fireball, leaving him to his last life. ''OK, it's now or never!'' he declared. He managed to get back to where he had died, and stood still to calculate when to move.
''You can do it, Mario.'' said Luigi.
Mario dodged the hammers, and at that moment, Bowser jumped, which allowed him to run under him and reach the axe.
(''Castle Clear- Super Mario Bros. OST'')
Bowser had been defeated! Mario had done it! He had saved Peach once again!
''YAAAAAHOOOOO! YES!'' he cheered.
But Luigi did not cheer with him. He congratulated his brother, but said no more, and this evaporated Mario's happiness. It had been two hours since they had started playing, and evening had fallen.
(''Sad Girl- Super Mario Galaxy OST'')
Although Mario had completed the game and saved Peach, he could not enjoy the victory as he would have liked, as Luigi had a demoralized look on his face. ''Hey, Luigi. What's wrong?'' he asked.
''I let you down, Mario. I'm sorry.'' Luigi replied sadly.
''You didn't let me down. You still did great, and it's just a game anyway.'' Mario said, putting his arm around Luigi's shoulder.
''And yet it seems so real.'' said Luigi.
''Well, this was the only the first of our adventures. We weren't as experienced as we are now.''
The man in green nodded. He could tell where Mario wanted to go, but that didn't make him feel any better. That Game Over screen reaffirmed his uncertainties. He was silent throughout the evening, and during dinner, he did not say a word.
''Are you not eating?'' asked Mario, noticing that Luigi hadn't touched his plate of pasta yet.
''I'm not very hungry today.'' said Luigi gloomily.
''Come on, you have to eat.'' Mario told him.
The younger brother sighed, but did as Mario wanted. However, the atmosphere remained somber, as he didn't say a word to him.
When they put on their pajamas and went to bed, Mario decided that this had to stop. ''Are you telling me why you're so down?'' he asked.
''I suppose I'm not a good hero.'' said Luigi.
Mario laughed. ''All because of an old game? Come on, don't take it too seriously. That doesn't mean anything!'' he chuckled.
''I wish it were the case, but what can I do? It brings back too much.'' replied Luigi.
''Oh, don't pay attention to what other people think.''
''These things are too obvious, and you know it. I can't ignore them.''
''That's no excuse for thinking that about yourself, Lu.'' Mario said.
''But Mario... I'm not like you at all. I'm not a hero.'' Luigi told him.
''Yes you are! Stop being so harsh on yourself!'' Mario scolded him.
The taller but younger brother covered his face in his hands and began to cry, which made Mario feel guilty for raising his voice. ''Oh, no... don't cry, Luigi. I didn't mean to offend you, I'm sorry.'' he said, stammering.
''Offend me? No, not at all... It's just my stupid thoughts...'' Luigi sobbed.
''Don't say that.''
''It makes sense that I'm your shadow. I'm not strong, I'm not brave, I'm not confident, I'm just clumsy and cowardly.''
Mario made Luigi sit on the bed as soon as he finished his sentence, sat down in front of him and cupped his head firmly but gently. ''Luigi, listen to me. You are not my shadow. You are many things, but not a coward and not my shadow. If you weren't strong, you wouldn't be alive now. If you weren't brave, King Boo would have imprisoned my soul. Don't be swayed by what other people think, you are a hero.'' he told him.
''From the way other people think of it, it's like if I'm not.'' Luigi said through tears.
Mario wiped Luigi's tears with his thumbs and leaned down, pressing his forehead against his. ''It's because they don't know anything about you. And if you're thinking about what you told me yesterday, Peach isn't mad at you. Tomorrow is a special day, so enjoy it with me, please.''
''OK.'' replied Luigi, and stopped crying.
''Good. Come here.''
(''Sad Girl- Super Mario Galaxy OST-s'')
The elder brother held Luigi in a hug. He hugged back tightly, clinging to his soft pajamas. After five minutes of cuddling, they pulled ways to go to sleep.
''We might as well face the new day...'' Luigi murmured, as they got under the covers. ''Good night, Mario.''
''Goodnight, Lu.'' said Mario, kissing Luigi on the forehead, and they fell asleep in the other's arms.
The next morning...

When the alarm went off that Sunday morning, Mario jumped out of bed like a cricket, realizing I doubt what day it was. ''Yippee!'' he cheered, immediately running to the bathroom to take a shower.
In the meantime, Luigi had just finished preparing breakfast. There was nothing he could do but face the new day. After all, it was a special day for Mario. He couldn't even think too much about it, because when he was about to bring hot coffee to the table, Mario jumped into his arms. ''Hey, Mario. Good morning,'' he said, surprised.
''Good morning, Luigi! Happy MAR10 Day!'' Mario said happily.
''Thank you, Mario. Happy MAR10 Day to you too.'' said Luigi. ''I've made you breakfast.''
Mario sat down and immediately began to eat. A hearty breakfast was waiting for him at the table. ''Delicious! Thank you, bro!''
''Prego, Mario.''
They had breakfast together, thinking about what to do that morning. There would probably be another party, Luigi was 100% sure of it.
When they finished eating, there was a knock on the door. It was Yoshi.
''Oh, hello, Yoshi!'' said Mario.
(''Hello, Mario! Hello, Luigi! Princess Peach is waiting for you at the castle. There's a party waiting for you. Join me there. See you soon.'') Yoshi said, and left soon after.

(''World 1 Map- New Super Mario Bros. Wii OST'')
''Another party in your honor, huh, Mario? I can't say it surprises me.'' Luigi murmured, shrugging his shoulders as he and Mario walked out. ''After all, I've never been very appreciated.''
''Oh, come on, Luigi. Peach, Starlow and I were talking about you at the party.'' Mario told him.
''Really?'' asked Luigi, surprised.
''Yes! Even Starlow was impressed with how you defeated Bowser! And I wasn't talking about anything but you!'' replied Mario.
''Do the others know?'' asked Luigi.
''Yoshi knows it, and I think Toad knows it too. The same goes for Blue Toad, Yellow Toad and Toadette. But a lot of people didn't believe me.'' said Mario.
''Why not?''
''For starters, those Toads from earlier forced me into the castle while I was talking to you.''
''You know how are they with the living legend of this world.''
''I know that! But I was having a private conversation with you! We can barely talk to each other during these parties! Even worse, almost everyone who was sitting with me and Peach turned on their heels and walked away while I was talking about you!'' said Mario, frustrated.
''How did this happen?'' Luigi asked, confused.
''Because they thought I was talking nonsense! There were some Ukikis who looked at me like I was crazy! Almost everyone who was sitting at my table left, saying that I wouldn't stop talking about you and that I went on forever!'' Mario snapped. ''It's really disrespectful! And it's bad enough that Daisy accused me of not being a good brother!''
He was about to rant further when Luigi put his hand on his shoulder, surprising him. ''Mario... Don't think about it. Let's just go to the castle. Today is your day, you should enjoy it.''
''I suppose you're right...'' Mario sighed.
(''World 1 Map- New Super Mario Bros. Wii OST-s'')
The two brothers reached the castle, and when they entered, the main hall was empty. Both the exterior of the castle and the interior were filled with red decorations with Mario's M. Red balloons, red banners, red streamers, pictures of Mario... It was all a wave of red.
Luigi sighed. He expected it, but it didn't mean it didn't hurt him. It was the usual status quo, and so he was doomed to be perpetually forgotten. He was still lost in thought, but Mario raised an eyebrow. ''What's the matter?'' he asked.
''You'll see.'' replied Mario.
They reached the dining room, and Luigi looked at the decorations in confusion until he noticed the decorations. They weren't just red. Some were green. Green balloons, green banners, green streamers...
''Did I miss something?''
''SURPRISE! HAPPY MAR10 DAY!''

All of Mario and Luigi's friends, including Yoshi, Toad, Blue Toad, Yellow Toad, Toadette, Wario, Waluigi, Professor E. Gadd with the Polterpup, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Rosalina and Pauline came out from under the table, with Peach holding one of her usual cakes.
''Hello, my friends!'' said Mario.
Luigi didn't know what to say. ''What...? What in the... What was that?'' he stammered.
''It's for you, you silly.'' Daisy said, grabbing Luigi's cheek.
''You didn't expect the green in the room, did you?'' asked Starlow.
''No.'' replied Luigi.
''Mario wanted to change the tradition of MAR10 Day. He came to me yesterday.'' Peach explained.
''Toad, do the others know?'' asked Mario.
''If you're referring to the other Toads, they found out, and they were skeptical about how you and the princess tried to change tradition.'' Toad replied.
Mario shook his head, a sign that he didn't appreciate this skepticism. ''You're saying it like Luigi doesn't deserve it.'' he said.
''He deserves it for us.'' Toad said. ''Right, guys?''
'''Yes!'' said Blue Toad.
''Absolutely!'' replied Yellow Toad.
''Of course!'' added Toadette.
''I don't want to give the impression that Luigi is an attention-seeker, but didn't he get his own year?'' a Green Toad asked.
''Yes, once. However, it was overshadowed by marketing problems, a disappointing business performance, and the death of one of the people who represented him that year, and things haven't changed since then. As soon as it was over, it was back to square one.(2)'' Mario replied, and then turned to the other Toads. ''And as for you, please don't force Luigi and me to part when we talk during the princess's festivities. You end up isolating him from me. I know I'm a celebrity around here, but try to contain yourself,'' he told them.
''Sorry,'' said the Toads.
Luigi was astonished. Had Mario done all this for him? He could not think too much of it, for the cake was served, and everyone began to eat. Mario winked at him, and at that moment he noticed the green party hat on top of his red hat. ''Big brother, you look ridiculous,'' he said to his brother.
''Oh, shut up and eat,'' Mario said playfully, patting Luigi's shoulder.
''Your brother told me everything, and I couldn't refuse,'' said Professor Strambic.

(''Record Scratch Sound Effect'')
''Jeez Laweez, why do I never get anything?!'' Waluigi complained.
''Because no one likes you, that's what!'' replied Daisy.
''Waluigi, Waluigi, Waluigi... You're so difficult. Do you know what the problem is? You want all the attention for yourself.'' Wario said.
''So what?!'' Waluigi snapped.
''You always kill the mood for everyone'' Mario said.
''None of you would want a day for Waluigi, would you?'' asked Daisy.
''NOOOOOOOOO, THANK YOU!'' Mario and Luigi screamed.
''NOOOOOOOOOOOO!'' everyone else screamed, except Peach.
''No, thanks.'' Peach added.
''And then who knows what he would do if that were the case. He'd be there hounding us all year long!'' said Mario, and at that moment, Waluigi looked at him as if he were contemplating to strangle him to death.
(''Scent of Silence- Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories OST'')
Peach thought back to the conversation she had had with Mario, and she was worried that Luigi hadn't said anything to her. ''Hey, Luigi?'' he asked.
''Yes?'' said Luigi, surprised.
''Mario told me everything. He told me you don't really enjoy being at my parties. Is there something wrong with my parties?'' asked Peach.
''No, that's not the reason. You're a good friend, Peach, and I appreciate what you do for me, but... When I'm at a party or other event, I always feel like a stranger. I think it's because of Mario's presence.'' Luigi replied sadly.
''I suppose it makes sense that everyone wants to be with Mario.''
''It's not really a great position for me and the others, is it?''
Noticing the bitter tone. Peach felt like she had said the wrong thing. ''Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean that,'' she said.
''It's okay, Peach. It makes sense that everyone loves Mario and not me. He's always been the stronger and more charismatic one among us, and since the Mushroom Kingdom already has him, I have a hard time standing out.'' Luigi said, a grim acceptance in his voice.
''Don't be ridiculous. You're a ghost hunter, Luigi,'' said Mario.
''Catching ghosts and saving the world are completely different things, bro.'' replied Luigi.
''Yeah, it's you who fought ghosts from another dimension, not Mario. You should be proud of yourself, my boy.'' said Professor E. Gadd.
''And I really appreciate what you do for me and Mario. You're like a brother to me, Luigi.'' Peach added.
(''Scent of Silence- Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories OST-s'')
The big party lasted all morning, and eventually, Mario and Luigi went to a stage, microphone in hand.
''Did you want to make a statement?'' Pauline asked.
''Of course,'' said Luigi.
Mario cleared his throat and began to speak. He and Luigi would take turns talking.
(''Family- Super Mario Galaxy OST'')
''My friends, and people of the Mushroom Kingdom, I may be a living legend in your eyes, and I really appreciate what you think of me, but... If I am what I am today, it is not only because of me.'' said the hero in red.
Many in the audience looked at him confused. What did he meant?
''I became the hero I am today because so many people assisted me. So many friends, so many people have helped me on my adventures. Yoshi, Toad, Blue Toad, Yellow Toad, Toadette, Peach, all of you have always supported me, and I am very grateful for that. But there is only one person who has stood by me at every opportunity, who while not the bravest person in the world, has risked his life for me several times and has faced his worst fears when I end up in danger. I'm talking about the person who's here with me right now. My brother, Luigi.'' he explained, pointing to Luigi, and some of their friends applauded, then continued. ''It's nice to be called a hero and have everyone cheer for you for something you've done. But... If you have a brother and no one cheers for him, that's a different story.''
Luigi spoke. ''There is absolutely no one who has not heard of the famous Mario, hero of the Mushroom Kingdom. Me? Almost everyone doesn't even know my name.'' he said. ''He goes off to save the princess, save the world... you name it.''
''I hear my name everywhere, but never my bro. Everyone would forget his name even though he's with me.''
''He's pretty much good at everything. Sports, parties, racing...'' Luigi sighed. ''He always seems to be perfect at just about anything.''
''When I win and he doesn't, I don't know what to say or what to do. I don't want to make it worse for me and him.'' Mario said.
It was clear that their tone had become melancholic. After all, the circumstances were not in Luigi's favor, and no matter how much Mario tried to help him, the inequality in merit between them was never a good sign. Even though he tried to hide it, Luigi couldn't help but feel a little jealous.
''Even if I go out on an adventure with him, he would get the majority of the credit. I hardly get any, or even none at all.'' said Luigi bitterly. ''I know that it might sound selfish, and maybe you'd hate what you're going to hear now, but I have to take that off my shoulders, and I don't care if you hate me for saying that. Sometimes, I even wished he hadn't existed at all. There were times when I wished he would just disappear.'' he admitted later, and he expected an uproar of boos and jeers from the crowd or even from his friends. Mario raised his head, looking at the audience as if to dare them to insult his brother. But there was no negative reaction. Their friends looked at them in concern, as they had sensed the sadness in their tone, and Mario seemed to have tears in his eyes when he heard this, but he didn't say anything.
''We don't always get along, and sometimes we have disagreements.'' Mario said, lowering his head. ''Makes me wonder if I'm being a good big bro. We fight, we argue... FWe may even not talk to each other from time to time.'' He seemed to feel ashamed of these weaknesses in his bond with Luigi, but then he smiled again. ''But...no matter what... he's still my bro.''
Relieved that no one had made a fuss about his earlier statement, Luigi went on. ''I always wanted to be like him, or even better than him. But I know that no matter what I do, I can never be like him. Deep down, I felt furious and jealous, knowing he'll be better than me,'' said Luigi. ''But he's also my bro.''
Although hesitant, Mario thought back to what Luigi had said earlier, and his sincerity convinced him to reveal his deepest thoughts about their relationship. ''I'd rather have fights with him than not have any at all.'' he admitted. ''I'd rather have him be jealous of me than not be at all. If we didn't have those times, then we wouldn't have been bros. We wouldn't be able to play video games with each other or go save the princess.''
''We may get into fights, but we would always make, even in the serious times. If something happened to me, he'd be there to help me.'' said Luigi. ''And...''
''I want to go out on adventures, play video games, fight, and argue with him.'' Mario said sincerely.
As he said these words, he tapped his brother's shoulder with his index finger to get his attention, showing him something. It was a piece of green paper, with the words ''THANK YOU LUIGI'' written in a dark green permanent marker. Touched, Luigi looked at his brother with tears in his eyes.
Mario was crying too, and he was beginning to lose his composure, as his voice was breaking. ''Because, even if I forget... He's the only bro I've got to share those moments with'' he added, embracing every moment with Luigi, both positive and negative. ''I know I'll never say this to you, but... Thank you... for being my lil' bro.''
''When the world seems to forget me, he would never forget his lil' bro... Even though I can't bring myself to say it... Thank you... for being my bro...'' Luigi sobbed, concluding his speech. The two brothers put away their microphones and hugged each other. They were both crying.
''Awwwwwwwwww...''
The audience was touched by the scene, and there was a great round of applause immediately afterwards. Mario and Luigi still didn't want to let go, so they kept one arm around each other's body. Donkey Kong gave them two thumbs up, as did Diddy. Waluigi had remained motionless, as if he didn't care about any of this. Wario was more focused on the scene, but he had a look of jealousy on his face.
''I must confess, you two are one.'' said Rosalina.
''I don't think I've ever seen two brothers so close.'' Pauline added.
''Mario. Seeing you and Luigi like this makes me feel jealous.'' Wario said.
''Really?'' asked Mario, confused.
''Yes. I have a few friends, but seriously. You and your brother? Oh, seeing you so tight-knit makes me burn with jealousy! You're perfect for each other, while I have to put up with my idiotic companion!'' replied Wario.
''If you dare say it one more time, I'll feed you to my Piranha Plant, Wario!'' Waluigi threatened him.
But in response, Wario punched him in the head. ''Shut up, Waluigi.''
Everyone laughed. (''Mario, Luigi, you are the best brothers ever!'') Yoshi cheered.
''You're a very good older brother, Mario. Don't forget that.'' Peach said, walking up to Mario and giving him a big kiss on the nose, making him blush.
''You too, Luigi. Mario can always count on you.'' said Daisy, kissing Luigi on the cheek, and Mario nodded.

That afternoon, Mario and Luigi returned home and decided to play Super Mario Bros. again in 2-player mode. Mario was sure that another attempt could give Luigi more self-confidence, as he wasn't convinced whether the party made him feel better or not. They had lost four lives each, but Luigi still had two lives.
They had both reached the final world, but Mario was unable to get past World 8-1, as just before reaching the Goal Pole, he mistimed his jump and a Piranha Plant came out of the pipe he was jumping towards, the second-to-last pipe of the level, killing him and causing him to lose his last life.

''Oh no! I hadn't seen the Piranha Plant!'' exclaimed Mario.

MARIO
GAME OVER
This time it was Mario who got the Game Over. ''It's up to you now, Luigi.'' he said. ''Come on, you can do it.''
(''Castle Theme- Super Mario Bros. OST'')
Luigi was nervous, but he was Fire Luigi when he defeated the last Fake Bowser, and he managed to get through the first level of the eighth world without taking any damage. In World 8-2, he was hit by one of the Lakitu's Spinies and was turned back to Small Luigi, but he recovered by finding a Super Mushroom in the middle of the level and reached the finish line. He lost his penultimate life in World 8-3 to a Bullet Bill towards the middle of the level, but there were a couple of power-ups to compensate, and he managed to find a Super Mushroom after knocking out the first Hammer Bros., and then a Fire Flower, with which he cleared out the remaining ones and completed the level.
''I hope I won't.'' Luigi murmured. With only one life left, he could only take one hit, the second one would kill him.
As soon as the timer started, he carefully made his way up the level until he found the right tube and passed the underwater section. He hadn't taken any damage yet, and when he saw a fireball, he dodged it and came face to face with Bowser.
''Bowser spotted!'' Mario declared.
''This time you're going to pay for fooling me last night!'' cried Luigi, stepping back to dodge the hammers.
''Open fire, Luigi! The fireballs!'' shouted Mario.
After dodging a fireball and waiting for Bowser to jump, the man in green repeatedly pressed the B button, firing one, two, three, four, five fireballs. All five hit Bowser before he could throw his hammers again, defeating him.
(''Castle Theme- Super Mario Bros. OST-s'')
''YES! YES!'' Luigi cheered. He ran to the axe and Peach was free. This time, he had won!
(''Ending- Super Mario Bros. OST'')
''You did it, Luigi! Ce l'hai fatta, ce l'hai fatta!'' Mario joyfully yelled, getting up to hug his brother. ''See? I told you you're a hero.''
''I sure surprise myself.'' said Luigi.
The game went straight back to the title screen, and the brothers took off their respective hats and lay down on Mario's bed, with Luigi sitting on his older brother's lap.
''Mario? Did you do all this for me? Were you serious in this speech?'' asked Luigi.
''Of course. MAR10 Day is supposed to be our day, not mine, and I was tired of seeing you sidelined when we celebrate this day. You are a Mario, and as such, you must be celebrated like me.'' replied Mario, stroking his brother's hair. ''And I want to spend every single moment with you, even in our disagreements. Our bond will be eternal.''
And Luigi broke down, crying tears of joy and throwing his arms around Mario's neck. ''Oh, Mario! Thank you... Thank you...'' he sobbed.
''Whoa, Luigi, take it easy!'' exclaimed Mario. He returned the hug immediately, but Luigi was hugging him so tightly that he was suffocating him.
''I'm just so happy... you're the best, Mario!'' said Luigi, and repeatedly kissed his brother's cheeks.
''Oh, Lu...'' Mario chuckled, and they kneeled down facing each other as Mario cupped Luigi's face in his hands and pressed his forehead against his.
''Hey, Mario?''
''Yes?''
''I couldn't be happier to have you as a brother.''
''Me too.''
''I'm not like you. I probably never will be. Will we get into a fight again? Maybe. Will I be as famous as you? Maybe not. But nothing will change between us. No matter how inequal our fame is, I will always support you. I may not be the strongest or bravest person, but I will do everything I can to help you.'' said Luigi.
Mario was moved. ''Lu... Oh, you're so sweet...! Come here!'' he said, through tears, and gave him a big brotherly kiss on both cheeks, followed by another one, this time on the forehead.
''Mario... stay by my side.'' whispered Luigi.
''Of course. I will stay by your side forever. Because I love you so much, Lu.'' said Mario, pressing another kiss on Luigi's forehead.
''I love you so much too, Mario.'' said Luigi, resting his head on Mario's chest and feeling his hands petting his hair.
Mario and Luigi thought back to their bond and all the moments they had spent together, even the negative ones. As they cuddled on the bed, they were sure that nothing could separate them. As they always said, ''Nothing can touch us, as long as we stay together.'' With these thoughts, they fell asleep on the bed, and Luigi still had his head on Mario's chest, falling asleep as he heard his heartbeat.
(''Ending- Super Mario Bros. OST-s'')
A/N: Happy MAR10 Day, everyone! A one-shot for MAR10 Day may be familiar to you, as it was my very first fanfic when I joined four years ago. Maybe it hasn't aged so well, but I'll improve something. Mario and Luigi are fantastic brothers, aren't they? Did you like this special one-shot? Let me know! See you in the next chapter!
(1): Super Mario Bros.'s World 4 was originally intended to be World 1, but this was changed late in development.
(2): This is a reference to the Year of Luigi, which took place in 2013 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his debut in Mario Bros. and put Luigi in the spotlight like never before with a very large marketing campaign. A similar event was repeated in October 2019 with the Month of Luigi, which was intended to promote the release of Luigi's Mansion 3 for Halloween. Unfortunately, despite the success of Luigi's games, including Luigi's Mansion 2, which sold over 6 million copies and became one of the best-selling games for 3DS, 2013 was one of the worst fiscal years for Nintendo, which lost 46.5 billion yen, the equivalent of $456 million. Also, on November 28, 2013, when it the Year of Luigi was still on, the actor and voice actor who starred as and voiced Luigi in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Danny Wells, died of cancer at the age of 72. The reason why the Year of Luigi was a year of crisis for Nintendo is due to the commercial failure of the Wii U, caused by a confusing and unclear marketing and some problems with the console itself, including low third-party support.
