-Bandit and Chilli looked at each other, knowing what it meant. Their two daughters looked at them, intrigued and curious.

"Dad, what does 'shoot on sight' mean? Is it a game?" Bluey asked, a bit incredulous.

-Bandit didn't know what to say. He was driving, trying to navigate through the chaos. "Let's say it is. Do you want to play a game, girls? The goal is not to be seen or heard by the men with guns. Do you think you can win this game?"

-Bluey, naïvely, replied, "Yes, I'm the best at this kind of game. When does it start, Dad?"

-Bingo looked at her sister, remembering what she had seen. She knew it was certainly not a game because she saw their mom's hand trembling, very worried. But she played along and said yes so as not to worry their parents further.

-Bandit kept driving when a huge truck appeared out of nowhere. He barely had time to turn the wheel and yelled, "Hold on!" before the truck hit the car head-on, sending the vehicle crashing against a wall and flipping it over. Fortunately, they were only superficially injured, with just a few scratches. "Are you all okay?" he asked, a bit panicked, trying to unbuckle his seatbelt to get out of the car.

-Chilli, holding her head, replied, "I… I think so. I'm dizzy, but I think I'm okay, Bandit." She had hit her head in the crash and was bleeding a little, but nothing too serious.

-Bandit finally managed to unbuckle himself and helped everyone else do the same. Once everyone was free, he tried to get out, but none of the doors would open. He had to take the hammer from the glove compartment to break the windshield and get out of the car. Meanwhile, everything around them was chaos: screams, growls, cries, explosions, and other terrifying sounds. They all managed to get out of the car, taking only the bare essentials with them: food, sleeping bags, and some lighting.

-Bluey, out of the car with her parents, turned to see the city streets in flames and covered in blood. She was frozen by this horrific vision. How had all this happened in such a short time? That very morning, everything was normal. She heard a voice calling her, but it sounded very far away.

-"Bluey! Bluey! Bluey! BLUEY!" Bandit grabbed his daughter's hand, understanding that she was in shock and would need a moment to come to her senses. He started running through the alleys with Chilli following, carrying Bingo in her arms. Some of these creatures were chasing them. He saw an open bar door and yelled at Chilli to get inside while he covered their backs. One of the creatures was about to touch Chilli; he let go of Bluey, causing her to fall to the ground, and ran towards Chilli, panicking. He stumbled and fell on the side of his body not holding Bingo to avoid hurting her.

-Bandit had never been so scared in his life. He was filled with rage at the thought of losing Chilli. "Don't touch my wife, monster!" He hit the infected dog's skull with his racket so hard that he decapitated it. When the dog's head came off, a disgusting noise made Bluey vomit on the ground, a mix of bones, torn flesh, and growls. Then nothing, the dog's body fell limp.

-Bandit realized that their weak point was probably their skull or brainstem. He helped

-Chilli up and asked how she was. She simply replied, "fine," before pushing her husband. One of the creatures had jumped on him; if she hadn't, Bandit would have been killed on the spot. They turned to see a horde of infected dogs running towards them.

-Bandit grabbed Chilli's hand and pulled her as fast as possible into the bar. They put Bingo and Bluey inside, holding the door against the repeated attacks of the dogs trying to get in.

-bandit "Chilli, go. Take the kids, go to the big bridge on the outskirts of the city. I'll join you there. If we both go, they'll catch up to us and we'll be exhausted before them. Someone has to stay to hold them off."

Chilli, her heart breaking at what Bandit was saying, knew he was right, but she didn't want to leave him. Torn, unable to decide, Bandit slapped his wife to snap her out of it, then kissed her tenderly while holding the door, as if it were their last embrace. He looked into her eyes and said with so much tenderness:

-bandit "Go, I'll join you, I promise." He looked into her eyes, tears in his. She kissed Bandit one last time, the moment seeming eternal to them. She grabbed Bingo and Bluey, carrying them in her arms, running as fast as possible towards the bridge so Bandit could flee as quickly as possible.

-Bluey and Bingo were crying, hitting their mother's back, screaming "Daddy!" in heartbreaking voices. Chilli bit her lip to keep from breaking down until she heard a growl behind her. She started running faster and faster, panicking. Suddenly, she heard a gunshot and her pursuer fell to the ground. She looked up to see a soldier with a firearm.

-"Get up, that's an order! Hands in the air!" He pointed his gun at her, holding his communication device, waiting for orders.

-chilli "Please, we're not infected. I have children, my husband is supposed to join us. Please, we just want to escape this nightmare."

-soldier "Don't you understand what I'm saying? I told you to shut the fuck up!" He grabbed his gun and hit Chilli in the face, breaking her nose. Her nose started bleeding, Bluey and Bingo were crying, hiding in their mother's arms.

A noise came from the device, she thought she heard: "Don't let anyone out of the security perimeter under any circumstances. If you have to kill, kill."

-soldier "Understood, Chief Corporal." The soldier aimed at Chilli and the children.

Suddenly, a scream broke the heavy silence. "Don't do it!" The soldier looked for the voice, still aiming at Chilli.

Chilli recognized that voice, it was…

A gunshot rang out, followed by a long, heavy silence. Chilli opened her eyes, feeling her whole body to make sure she was alive and did the same with Bluey and Bingo. She looked up and saw Bandit with a large chunk of his ear missing. He had managed, at the last minute, to lift the soldier's rifle so he missed his shot.

-The soldier tried to wrest the gun from Bandit's paws, but in doing so, the weapon slipped from his hands and fell near Chilli, still frozen by what she was seeing. The soldier drew a knife, trying to wound Bandit, managing to touch him superficially. At the last moment, Bandit knocked the soldier's helmet off and headbutted him violently, knocking both of them out, causing the soldier to drop the knife. The soldier jumped on Bandit, surprising him and making him fall on his back. The soldier pulled a pistol from his leg and pressed it to Bandit's skull.

-Soldier "This time I won't miss, you bastard."

Bang…

A bullet was fired, but it wasn't the soldier. It was Chilli who had brought back the gun and shot. By chance, she had hit the soldier in the head, causing his skull to explode. As the adrenaline that had allowed her to shoot without trembling wore off, Chilli felt intense pain in her shoulder. She had dislocated her shoulder while shooting; naturally, she had never fired a gun and had positioned the weapon poorly, causing the injury.

-Bandit, lying on the ground with the soldier's dead body on top of him, saw Chilli writhing in pain on the ground, her shoulder severely dislocated. He approached her and tried to cover her mouth, repeating, "Shh, Chilli, stop screaming, you're going to attract them." He put his paw in his wife's mouth to muffle her screams. Bingo and Bluey, covered in splashes of blood, stood there, immobile, horrified by what they had just seen.

-Bandit whispered in his wife's ear, "I'm going to pull on three to put it back in place."

-Chilli struggled, the pain driving her mad. Bandit tried to hold her down with his legs and quickly said, "1, 2, 3." He pulled his wife's arm back into place, causing such intense pain that she bit Bandit until he bled, screaming, digging her paws into the ground, and throwing her head back.

-Bandit held her tightly, caressing her, "You were very strong, my little robin. I'm so proud of you."

After finding shelter under the bridge with the children, he stopped there for a few hours to let Chilli recover from her ordeal.

"Dad, why did Mom kill that dog?" Bluey asked.

-Bandit looked at her, "You know, she had no choice. Sometimes we have to do bad things to protect those we love."

-"But then, did we do something bad for him to aim his gun at us?" Bluey retorted.

Bandit hugged his daughters, "No, not at all, and never doubt that, my dear."

Bingo stayed there, remembering the disfigured skull of the military dog, frantically scratching her arm in stress.

-Bingo spoke with a trembling voice, thinking of her friend Lila, "Do you think Lila is okay, Dad? Did she and her family manage to leave like we did?"

-Bandit sighed, "I hope so, Bingo, I hope so."

He had tried to send a message to Rad and Stripe to tell them what was happening and warn them not to come to Brisbane. He told them they were going to the Man of the Forest's place to find safety with their family, knowing that the military and the government were probably monitoring all incoming and outgoing communications. He hugged his wife and daughters tightly, and they snuggled against him. He smiled, happy that nothing bad had happened to his family, hoping that his brothers would fare as well as he did.
