Tea with the Princess
(^^)
Terry and Justin settled into the playroom around the small wooden table that was painted just a few shades lighter than lilac. The surface was crowded with a mismatched tea service, because their five-year-old daughter had wanted to make her own. Amelia had definitely gotten Justin's Hufflepuff determination to see through her goals, even as young as she was. A teddy bear with indigo fur with yellow stars and a baby doll dressed in a lacy dress had places of honor between the two men.
Amelia had just gone to the bathroom and would be back momentarily.
As they waited for her to return (and kept one ear open for anything out of the norm from the nearby bathroom), they caught up on the news of the day and any upcoming plans they had. Even after all the years together, they still couldn't help but marvel at the life they had created together. It was a family, something both of them had never thought possible. There was, after all, some things that even magic couldn't guarantee.
The door to the playroom burst open and in bounded Amelia, with an infectious smile on her heart-shaped face and energy practically rippling off of her small body. She rushed over to the open seat between her teddy bear and dolly. With the exaggerated amount of care common to children of her age, Amelia arranged the layers of tulle that made up the skirt of her pale pink fairy princess dress so that it went around her chair rather her sitting on it.
"Tea time!" she declared once she was completely settled. Justin exchanged a smile with his husband before they both helped the little girl arrange the teacups. Amelia poured the warm (not hot) tea from her teapot into everyone's cups (including the ones for Teddy and Dolly) and made sure that everyone had at least one blackberry jammy dodger, heavily frosted cupcake, and berry tartlet in front of them. Terry laughed heartily and caught his partner's eye.
"Remember when we thought our lives were never going to get better than this?"
"I sure do."
Amelia glanced at the clock on the wall, noting its progress.
"It's getting late," she said, her voice a little more serious than usual. "We should start the tea party."
Terry and Justin exchanged another look, and then both nodded in agreement.
Terry poured the tea, and soon they were all talking and laughing and sipping their tea. Amelia shared stories of adventures with Teddy and Dolly, of wacky experiments she had made with her governess, of sailing to the moon and back again. Her stories were full of imagination and wonder, of a world that seemed so much bigger and better than their own.
And as the conversation flowed, Terry and Justin realized that, even though life had changed since they first met back when they attended Hogwarts together, it had only gotten better. They were a family, and each day seemed to bring more love and joy than the one before.
