Bella bounces her knees as she watches the teacher distribute the science test papers around the class. Edward gives her a reassuring smile, but she ignores him as he already received his paper and can relax. Of course, Bella was supposed to jump one grade since she was doing so well at home schooling and finished grade 2 with Mrs. Cope, but her plan came to a halt once she started taking ballet again.
What she discovered during that first class was that she would need to train more than she used to, if she wanted to continue ballet. Then a decision was made; in order for Bella to not overwork herself, she would continue her grades as she originally was doing. Bella was super disappointed since she was so excited to learn new things now that she is good at school. Her mummy and Mrs. Cope's compromise was that Mrs. Cope will teach her something extra when helping her study and will teach her during the summer vacation so that she knows stuff before the class.
Bella shifted in her seat feeling even more nervous as she watches Miss Tiffany walk toward the front of her class. She looks around and notices how everyone has a paper in their hand except her. Edward gives her a sympathetic look thinking that the teacher is about to make an example out of her. Edward doesn't understand. He saw how hard Bella worked for the class.
Miss Tiffany claps her hands bringing the attention of everyone to the front of it. "Okay everyone, for today, instead of starting a new lesson, I will be solving the test paper with you," Miss Tiffany states then picks the only paper on her desk and turns to the board but not before she turns to look at Bella, "Bella, I am going to use your paper to read the question. I will give it to you at the end of the period. Is that okay sweetie?"
It takes Bella a couple of seconds to open her mouth to reply finding herself too confused by the whole thing, so of course Emmett takes that as his chance and jumps of his seat and speaks over her. "Miss Tiffany, you can use my paper." His statement sounds more like a demand than request.
Miss Tiffany smiles at him and tells him, "That is very nice of you Emmett, but you made some mistakes. Bella is the only one in the class that answered every question correctly."
Edward looks at Bella and smiles widely happy for her, but Bella is still too confused too feel happy. "So I got a good mark?" She asks timidly.
Without turning toward the students, Miss Tiffany replies, "You got the best mark."
Bella turns toward Edward and whispers too low for anyone to hear, "I got the best mark!"
"You did. I am so proud off you," Edward whispers back still smiling at her. He always knew that Bella is smart, and is happy that now everyone knows that too.
Bella hears a huff from the back and remembers that the owner of it a while ago called her stupid, so she turns to face him and wats till he looks at her to smile at him and wiggle her eyebrows. the angry look he gives her makes her feel so happy that she doesn't listen to a word that is said, and instead spends the rest of the period imagining all of the things she could tell him in the break to spite him.
Once the bell rings, everyone runs outside ready to play while Bella and Edward stay behind to get her paper. Edward takes the eraser from the teacher and starts cleaning the board while the teacher turns to Bella and gives her the paper. Bella smiles as she looks at the ten out of ten mark not believing her eyes. Finally, she did it.
"Bella?" Her teacher calls to her catching her attention. Bella looks up still smiling.
"I know some kid has been rude to you and has been making you feel bad about your grades. I heard him, and I did that because I wanted him to stop. I hope you are okay with that?"
Edward looks up in surprise. Which boy has been making Bella feel bad? Bella is nice to everyone. Everyone loves her. Why would anyone hurt her feelings? More importantly, why has she not told him?
Bella ignores the looks Edward is giving her and replies to the teacher, "It was okay. Have a nice break."
Bella takes Edward's arms and drags her out of the room with her. "Who was being rude to you?" Edward demands the moment they are out of the class.
Bella realizes that if she tells Edward now, he will get angry and fight with Emmett then regret it later, and so she tells him, "I will tell you on the way home in the car."
"I want to know now," Edward demands stopping in his tracks.
Bella shakes her head and tells him, "No. I will tell you in the car." and then starts walking forcing Edward to walk behind her.
"But I want to know now," Edward whines as he drags his feet behind her. Bella just ignores him and continues walking to the lunch room. They get in the line and pay for their food then walk toward the table where Emmett and Alice are sitting. Yes, that is something that Bella does. By the time grade two started, Edward was really good friends with them and Bella didn't want to be a bad friend by telling him to sit with her alone.
Plus, Alice isn't that bad. She whines and throws hissy fits when she wants something and Bella refuses to do it, but she isn't awful like her brother.
All of the things she was thinking of telling Emmett to irritate him go out of the window the moment she spots Alice beaming at her. Alice is happy for her and Bella decides that she doesn't want to make her sad by being mean to her brother. She knows that he will probably be mean to Alice at home in return. Alice never told her that Emmett acts mean toward her when he gets angry, but once, she finished talking to her on phone and heard him being mean to Alice before she hung up the phone.
She ignores Emmett completely and focuses on talking to Alice instead.
But, unlike Bella, someone else doesn't ignore Emmett and studies him during the break. "It was Emmett, right?" Edward asks her once they get in the car.
Bella nods her head silently. "When?" Edward demands.
"During your birthday party," Bella tells him timidly scared that he will be angry with her. She doesn't want Edward mad at her. She didn't hide what Emmett told her to be mean. She simply didn't want to spoil the party for him, and by the time the party was over, she got over it.
Edward sighs loudly running his fingers through his hair. "Why did you not tell me?"
Bella opens her mouth, but closes it not sure what to say. Then she opens her mouth again and closes it. She knows that Edward won't like her reasons.
"I am not stupid," Bella states and at the confused look on Edward's face, she continues, "He called me stupid, but I am not stupid, so I don't need to focus on that. I proved to him that I am not stupid and that is what matters."
Edward is quiet thinking over her answer then tells her, "But you left the party."
"Because my feeling were hurt, but once I calmed down, I decided that his opinion doesn't matter. There was no need to tell you and make you sad too," Bella tells him.
Edward glares at her silently. "Come on! You can't be angry at me. My feeling were hurt by him."
"And my feelings are hurt!" Edward exclaims angrily at her. Bella blinks in surprise. Did Edward just yell at her?
"Edward, no shouting in the car," His mummy reprimands from the driver seat.
Edward twists his arms across his chest as he tells her n a quieter voice, "I feel stupid. I was being nice to him when all along he hurt your feelings. You were sad in your house while I was laughing with him."
"Edward I am okay," Bella tells him trying to make him feel better.
Edward turns to her and tells her, "You don't understand Bella. You are my friend and the rule of friendship state that you aren't allowed to bully the friend of your friend. You only break the rule of friendship if you think someone is stupid, or you hate him."
"So you are only mad because he broke the rules of friendship?" Now it's Bella's turn to hurt. Edward should be mad that Emmett hurt her feelings, not get his feelings hurt.
Edward shakes his head and tells her sounding vulnerable, "Of course not. I hate that he made you feel sad. You are my friend. I don't like it when you feel sad, but I also feel stupid."
Bella rubs her hand on his shoulder and tells him, "You are not stupid. He is just a butthead."
"Bella language," Edward's mummy exclaims angrily.
"Sorry," Bella mutters sinking into her seat feeling guilty for making Mrs. Esme angry.
"She wasn't insulting him. She was describing him mummy," Edward states coming to her defense.
His mummy gives him a look that makes him do a zipping motion over his mouth While Bella hides her giggles behind her hand.
Bella leans to the side and whispers to him, "I will make it up to you. I promise."
"How?" Edward whispers back.
"I will tell you on the phone," Bella whispers back not wanting his mummy to know which is how the next day the both of find themselves sitting in front of five angry grown ups.
"I can't believe this. I thought when we moved to this town, we would meet civilized people, not deal with savages," Emmett's mummy exclaims.
Bella's mummy who was getting tired of her ranting jumps to the defense of her daughter and Edward. "Hey! They may have done something bad and they will be punished for it, but they are in no way, shape or form savages. They are kids!"
"Kids who refuse to apologize for throwing eggs on my husband's car!" Emmett's mummy screams at Bella's mummy.
Bella opens her mouth ready to apologize and get away from this awful lady, but Edward gives her a look and tells the adults, "We will only apologize when you get Emmett."
This time it's Emmett's daddy who reacts by rolling his eyes and telling Bella and Edward, "Should we give you some privacy too? So you can come up with a good lie to accuse my son of."
"We will only apologize when Emmett comes," Bella replies firmly angry at him for being rude to her and Edward. Bella doesn't know why Edward wants Emmett here, but she will not let this man be rude to her. No wonder Emmett is rude! It's not like he will learn good manners with a daddy like that.
"Man, just get your son, so we can get this over with. My wife and I have more important things to do than to listen to you and your wife lecture us. I am sure Renee feels the same way too."
"Your kids misbehaved and we are the bad guys?" Emmett's daddy demands angrily.
"The kids told you that they will only apologize once Emmett comes and instead of calling your son, you and your wife spent the last 30 minutes lecturing us on being good parents. We know our children. They are well-behaved kids. It is not within their nature to cause trouble. If they ask for Emmett, then they have their reasons."
Emmett's daddy sighs then gives his wife a look that makes her roll her eyes then get up and go up the stairs. She returns five minutes later with Emmett trailing behind her.
"Happy now? Apologies and leave," Emmett's daddy demands.
Bella opens her mouth ready to apologize and get away from this awful family, but Edward has other plans. "We will only apologize after Emmett apologizes to Bella."
Bella is as surprised as everyone else, but Edward reassures her by taking her hand in his and squeezing it. Bella squeezes it back and scoots closer to him scared from the three people glaring at her.
"Excuse me!" Emmett's mummy exclaims angrily.
If looks could kill, Edward and Bella would be dust, but Edward doesn't let that get to him because he knows that he is in the right. "Yes, we will only apologize if Emmett apologizes to Bella first. I told him that Bella is my best friend and he has to be nice to her. Emmett told her that she is stupid when he doesn't even know her. If he doesn't apologize to her, I won't apologize and neither will Bella."
Both of their mummies hide their smiles as they watch Edward defend Bella. Even Edward's daddy has to stop himself from beaming in pride at his son fighting back at the Brandons and defends his best friend.
"Liar! I never called her stupid. She is lying," Emmett yells at Bella.
Edward beats Bella to the punch and tells him, "Bella doesn't lie. You're the liar."
Emmett's daddy who had been watching the back and forth between his son and the two kids states, "I don't think Emmett is lying," then pauses and turns to the adults in the room and tells them, "I think you should make your kids apologize and have a serious talk with them about making up tales."
"I think instead of telling us what to do with our kids, you should take your own words and teach your son manners. My daughter isn't lying. I spent hours consoling her because your son was so cruel to her that he left her in tears," Renee states standing up and taking two step until she is standing in front of Emmett's daddy in defiance.
Emmett's daddy glances at him trying to figure out if he is lying or not, when Emmett's mummy exclaims, "We aren't going to take your daughter's words over our son's. Now make your daughter apologize and leave."
Renee turns to Mary and tells her, "My daughter is not lying and you won't receive an apology from her unless your son apologizes to her."
"Make your daughter apologize, or you won't like the consequences," Maria tells her, her face turning an impossible shade of red.
"Are you seriously threatening me Mary Brandon?" Renee asks rhetorically.
Mary twists her arms across her chest and tells him, "I am saying that I will make your life a nightmare if you do not do what I say," then she turns to the Cullens and tells them, "Unless you want the hospital to lose its funding, you will make your son apologize and get the fuck our of my house."
Having had enough of their threatening, Carlisle tells Emmett senior, "I started looking into different funding for the research the moment you two moved in next to us and I realized how much of a nightmare the two of you are. I will not sit by and watch as my son and his best friend get attacked more, and I will most definitely not allow anyone to threaten me. The five of us are leaving. Do whatever you want to."
Without a word, Renee and Esme get up and the kids stand up too to follow them to Emmett senior displeasure. "Well yeah, of course you are. Can't handle the heat can you? Things are all great until you realize that your kids are liars. That is when you run away."
Renee turns to face him and angrily tells him, "Stop calling my daughter a liar. My husband used to be the chief of police and every single police in this town would do what I ask them to. Do not tempt me to go and get the baseball bat in my car and beat you up."
"Your daughter is a liar," Emmett senior states in retaliation.
Renee gives him a murderous look then runs to her car like she is on fire and within less than a minute, returns with the bat in her hand. "Do you still think my daughter is a liar?" She asks as she slaps the end of the bat into her hand in a threatening motions.
Everyone in the room is too shocked to do anything, but watch out for what Emmett senior will do. "She isn't lying."
Everyone looks to the stairs for the source of the whisper and finds Alice standing on the landing.
When Alice finds everyone looking at her, Alice wrings her hands nervously as she tells them, "Bella isn't lying. I was standing beside him when he told her that she is stupid."
Their parents glare at Alice and her mummy asks her, "Are you sure that is what happened sweetie? No one is going to judge you if you don't remember correctly."
Alice nods her head despite the glare that her parents and brother level at her. She understood then that what her mummy is telling her is to lie and change her words, to say that Emmett didn't call Bella stupid, but Alice is so sick of Emmett bullying her into doing what he wants and her parents letting that happen. It is not fair. If her parents will continue to ignore what Emmett does, she will embarrass them. Maybe that will make her parents be very angry at her and punish her, but also maybe they will change their mind and will make them tell Emmett to not bully people.
"Edward told us that Bella will help us find the place to put our gifts in and Emmett told her that she is stupid and he doesn't need her help," Alice states looking at Bella.
At that moment, Bella realizes that Edward isn't her only friend. She has Alice now.
