Shay could hear a TV but also music. She tried to move, but her whole body felt so heavy and lethargic. She didn't know what was wrong, but she didn't feel right. Then she heard voices. She recognized the voices but couldn't really hear what they were saying. As she tried to focus on the voices, her head hurt so much.
Instead, she tried to open her eyes, but her eyelids felt too heavy. Still, she tried, and finally, Shay managed to open her eyes. The lights were low enough that her eyes didn't hurt. Her vision was blurry, but even now, her eyes were beginning to focus. She saw Severide sitting by her bed.
Shay closed her eyes; it hurt to keep them open for long. But why was she in the hospital? The last thing she could remember was getting up for her shift the day of the Chief's wedding. What had happened? Shay opened her eyes again.
She tried to move to give them some indication that she was okay, but when she tried to move, she could barely make her toes twitch. She didn't know what had happened, but she could still feel her fingers and toes, so it wasn't too bad, was it? Shay felt Kelly holding her hand and wanted to let him know she was awake,she could barely make a sound so instead she willed her hand to work and finally she was gripping his hand and she could feel his hand and suddenly he was awake and crying,kissing her hand,then she managed a small smile.
Then suddenly there were doctors in the room and she lost her hold on Kelly and that's when the pain swept through her making her actually cry out in pain.
Her head and neck felt awful and she wished she had stayed asleep and everything else just ached,then the pain eased and she was able to focus again. The doctors said something but she couldn't really tell what it was,they stepped back and this time Dawson was crying on her and for the first time she realised how bad things must have been.
After a very short time she fell back asleep so she didn't see her firehouse family come to visit. Shay for the next couple of days slept on and off and not much else,she knew Severide and Dawson had been on shift as her mom came to sit with her instead and she sat,held Shay's hand and told her all about what her sister and niece and nephew were up to.
The next time Kelly was with her he was telling her about his last shift he paused when Shay looked like she was trying to talk,finally she managed to croak. "Kelly,what happened?".
