Forces: Deadly Reasonable Reasons is the next set of chapters that I was nervous to submit. Why? Because Sonic, Tails and Chris/Wally story has come to an End. Everything has all come full circle for them. Especially for Tails. They're not going to be around anymore. Even if it's set in the Sonic Forces Universe, the tone remains the same and so is the realism.

Now it's time for someone new to take center stage.

10 months has gone by after the chaotic events that happen within the dense forest near Nue Heaven. Ex-BOA Saboteur, Craig now having to spend his remaining life behind bars at the Resistance Correctional Prison. Can there be anything to free him? Even if its for just one day? Could it take just one letter?

A MAJOR thanks to the Beta-Readers here on that helped me put this into words and to fix it as much as possible till I felt confident with it. Thanks to...

Chapter 4: Leaving A Trail

Craig stands up and then leans on the tree. He then nervously asks while rubbing his knee, "Okay… first thing's first… this phone that I'm using… I uhh, I need to be the owner of it."

He hears Liz sigh. "The what now?"

"Owner. The uhh… person I… borrowed it from… might want the number back. …Just saying." Just as he finishes asking, he gets an incoming call.

"Oh my… Craig… I… ugh… Stop confusing stolen with borrowed and give me a second." He hears her type. "…Done. The phone is only involved with me."

He takes out the Lemur's picture and takes a good look at it. He places it down and takes a picture of it. "Now for the good stuff. I'm sending you a picture of one of the kidnappers."

"This is one of them? I'll see what I can find," she says then hangs up on him.

He starts walking further into town looking at the hotel as he passes by it. Across the highway street was a convenient store selling groceries. The phone rings again. "Anything?"

She answers back, unsure, "He's a ghost. I just can't find anything on him… I've never had a problem like this before but… Yeah, he's a ghost. What's even weird is that I can only find 4 to 5 hours and that's it. Like… he just blinked into existence."

"He's here. He's no ghost." He walks onto the parking lot of the hotel area as he asks, "So what did the 4 to 5 hours tell you?"

"He didn't go far. Where you are right now, is where he is."

"Did you narrow down the spot?"

"Yes. Where are you?"

"I'm… at…-" He looks at the hotel. "I'm at Mercury EZ Sleep Hotel. Just near the entrance of town."

"There's a warehouse located four blocks away due west. I'll put it on your 'borrowed' phone."

He smiles and starts walking. "Thanks. I'm heading to it right now."

"What are you going to do when you get there?"

"Stay tuned to the news and you'll get your answer. I'll call you back once I'm done," he says, hanging up. He looks at the battery and time that read 41% and 2:27pm. "Hope you can stay charged by the end of this."

After walking two blocks west, he had to stop and rub his knee. He looks across the street and sees a restaurant called: Douglas' Pizza Parlor. He shakes his head at it. 'No time to eat, I got to keep going.'

Halfway through the 3rd block he sees the warehouse that Liz mentioned, but instead of heading directly to it, he casually walks into an alleyway between two buildings that's across the street from it.

In it, one of the buildings was two stories tall providing the perfect vantage point to the warehouse. 'Alright, now how do I get up… there?' His answer is quickly answered seeing a catwalk with its ladder hanging low, but unfortunately it wasn't low enough to reach as he walks underneath it.

But nearly underneath right next to him was a well-placed dumpster bin close to it. 'Perfect.' Climbing onto the dumpster, he stands trying to keep his balance and still with his arms reaching out, he was unable to touch the ladder. "Dammit. Really? Now I know how Peanut feels like." he complains.

'Alright, all I have to do is jump and…' He looks down seeing a box that he can use to stand on to safely reach…

He shakes his head, 'Nah,' He looks back up to it again, 'I can do this. All I have to do is-'

Craig jumps up…

Craig misses ladder…

Craig comes back down…

Upon landing, his knee goes 'pop!' bending awkwardly.

From within the alleyway, Craig can be heard shouting in pain, "GAH-FWAUCK!" falling off of the dumpster and painfully landing back on the floor. What soon follow are inaudible angry fox sounds.

Struggling to get up to his feet using the dumpster, he looks down and grabs the box placing it on top. He snarls looking upward at the ladder, determined to get up to the roof.

Once safely getting on the roof, he looks over to the warehouse to observe how the security is and how well armed they are. 'Damn, what I'd do to have a rifle right now.'

Objective 4: Kill. Them. All… In Progress

He grins at the thought of it, 'Fucking put a bullet into each one of… their…' He shakes his head.

ABORT OBJECTIVE 4… Accepted

"No… what if they actually work there? What the hell am I thinking?"

He goes back to observing, noticing that one of them always goes off alone to take a smoke break. He looks at his phone to time it. After close to an hour he mutters, "15min or so. Gotta love chain smokers."

Objective 5: Interrogate the Guard for Answers… In Progress.

He carefully gets off the roof and heads to his smoking spot, picking up a metal bar along the way.

Meanwhile, Captain Corrigan drives along the cliff side near the edge of town, able to get a good view of the small town of Mercury. She rolls down the window to get a better look as Drew asks, "What now? Lock the town down? No one comes in or goes out?"

She shakes her head, "No… not yet. The people who live there aren't involved in this. If he really is dangerous… being Ex-BOA, he can easily take this whole town hostage."

Drew nods in agreement. "So we wait?"

She turns the key, turning off the engine. "We wait. A small quiet town like this would make anything echo come out of it."

Drew also looks over the town and sees the town's Police Department. He grabs the picture of the BOA fugitive and shows it to her. "Should we at least let Mercury PD know?"

She glances at the picture and ponders about getting them involved.

"They need to know. In case things get out of hand. It was eight kids that got kidnapped, meaning that it's not just him."

She nods. "You're right. Get in touch with them and let them know everything."

Over a fence and around the corner of the maintenance shack of the warehouse, Craig stands over an unconscious patrol guard bound to a pole, lying on the ground with his mouth taped shut. After disarming him, he places his gun and knife in front of him, able to see them. He waits patiently for him to wake up. Once the guard shows movement, Craig walks into position and waits for him to regain his senses.

Optional: Kill or Spare the Guard… In Progress

The guard groggily looks directly at him with his one eye open in fear. His other eye, he can barely open since that's where Craig hit him knocking him out. Muffled begging comes out of him.

Balancing with the metal bar, Craig shakes the guards near empty pack of cigarettes as he asks, "Has anyone ever tell you, that these can be the death of you?"

All that comes out from the guard is an audible swallow.

Craig flicks the pack of cigarettes at the guard causing him to flinch from it. He then holds the metal bar like a baseball bat and threatens quietly, "One loud sound out of you and I'm going to knock you the fuck out again. Clear?"

He nods, keeping his eye on the metal bar heavy movements.

Craig does a couple of practice swings. "I ask a question and you either nod or shake. I don't like your answer-" He swings it at him coming inches away from his face. "Clear?"

He nods frantically.

Straight to the point, he asks, "Are any of the kids here from the fair?"

The guard's eye widens.

Craig notices his reaction and begins to scowl, lifting the metal bar gripping it tight.

The guard starts nodding franticly.

Lowering the rod down as it scrapes the cement floor, he then goes through his jacket pocket and unfolds the picture. He shows it and asks, "Is he… here?"

The guard looks at it then slowly up to him… then nods.

Objective 4: Interrogate the Guard for Answers… Complete.

Craig then tears the picture in half and tosses it to the side. He takes a deep breath then slowly lets it out. With a tight grip, he raises the bar up and swings it, connecting it to the side of the guard's head, making a loud crunch.

Optional: Kill or Spare the Guard… Complete

Placing the bar down, he then picks up the knife and shoves the other handgun into his other jacket pocket. He quietly heads to the warehouse with knife in hand.

Objective 5: Infiltrate and…

Fast Forward…

Captain Corrigan's partner, Drew, is checking on the police transmission to see if anything comes in. Corrigan becomes impatient as she paces outside of the squad car.

Drew then frantically waves at her from in the squad car. "Ma'am… uhh… Mrs? …Shit." Drew was incapable of controlling how overly anxious he was trying to inform her.

"Words, Drew. Use them."

He sighs and informs, "They… kinda found him."

"Kinda?"

"Yes. A lieutenant from town just found three of the missing kids at a pizza parlor."

Getting back into the car, she quickly drives towards the place. "No sign of him?" she asks.

"Nothing. They said that they would explain everything once you get there."

Upon reaching the pizza parlor they both exit out. A slightly overweight Lieutenant was the only one around to approach her. "That was fast," he says. (Gecko, Age: 35, Height: 5'2, Male, Name: Marcus Kaiser)

Drew smiles and responds, "Under 30 minutes or you're-" She gives him a glare making him stop. "Sorry."

Corrigan does a quick search, seeing another squad car exit from the parking lot. As it drives away, it then stops at a red light. Then… the loud sound of an obnoxious motorcycle muffler is heard as it comes into view.

"Is that who I think it is?" Drew asks, knowing exactly who it is.

Corrigan sighs and lets out an aggravated answer, "Yeah… it's him."

Bert is seen riding down the road and stops near the squad car at the red light. He talks to the driver, and luckily for her, he takes a different road not being noticed.

With a sigh of relief, she turns her attention to the Lieutenant and proceeds to ask, "So? Details?"

He answers back with a country accent, "We questioned every worker but the cashier was the only one that saw 'em. The fugitive came in with three kids, placed an order, paid, and then walked 'em to a booth. The cashier then saw all three kids sit but him. She saw 'em talk for a bit, and then he walked right back to where she was. Once he reached her… he then pointed to the kids and told her to call the cops once they were done eating."

Drew chuckles, "Bet the cashier was surprised by it."

The Lieutenant looks directly at Drew, noticing just how immature he is towards the situation. "No shit. After saying that, he just walked out."

"Did the kids leave a statement?" she asks.

The Lieutenant looks back to Corrigan. "Yup. All three were afraid about everything that happened, but when we found them they were calm and relaxed."

"What else did they say?" she asks.

"Nothing else, but the one thing that they said that was the same was the same three words, 'He saved us'."

Drew's smile was as big as ever upon hearing those three words.

Corrigan, noticing his reaction, shakes her head at him. 'You got to be kidding me. He better not be thinking about it.' She turns her attention back to the lieutenant, asking, "You said, 'Afraid about everything'. Did the kids point to where they were held?"

Lieutenant nods. "They did." He points to the west. "Two blocks that way to a warehouse. I sent a couple of-"

His radio alerts him. "Hello, Marcus? Are you there?"

He lets out a frustrated sigh hearing his name, grabbing his radio. "Rookies," he mutters. Answering the call, he asks, "I'm here with the 'Captain' of Maple PD. What do you see over there?"

From the radio the officer answers in a disturbed manner, "It's… umm, it's a massacre over here, sir. Bodies… about six of… err… what? …Another one? …Make that seven."

"Okay… I'll head on over there." He looks at the Captain. "I… I have to go check it out for myself. What are you going to do?"

She looks at Drew, who still has a smile on his face. Drew, upon being noticed, quickly gets rid of his smile and gets ready for her order. She narrows her eyes at him as she points, scolding him, "I know what you're thinking. Yes, he saved the kids, 'BUT' his body count doesn't make him a hero, 'AND' since he has a lead on us, that means every time we catch up or find where he's been, we're going to find nothing but dead bodies." She looks at the Lieutenant and orders, "Drew, go with him to the warehouse and see what you can find."

Drew looks at the Lieutenant and nods but then asks, "What are you going to do?"

"I'm going back to the precinct to see what I can find on him. Hopefully I can figure out more about him and his background with the BOA's." She heads to the squad car.

Drew then quickly asks, "To the precinct? All the way out of… that's 40 minutes away. What if he leaves town?"

She opens the car door and answers, "He won't. Something happened to him at the fair that ties him to this place. I need to find out what it is." She gets into the car and speeds off.

The Lieutenant watches her drive away, and then remarks, "She's going to be gone for a good while."

Drew then remarks back, "Guess you never been in the same car with her when she drives."

Hearing his response, he asks curious, "She's that bad?"

Drew chuckles, "No, she's not a bad driver; it's just that… well… Think of it like this; She's basically Sonic when she's behind the wheel." He then looks at the lieutenant and gestures him to go first. "After you, lieutenant."

The Lieutenant leads him to his police jeep.

As they drive towards the location in the police jeep, the lieutenant looks over to Drew and asks, "What's your deal with the captain? She never needed a partner 'til you showed up."

Drew nervously answers, "I… well… I'm a special case."

He laughs. "A special case? Please tell me, o' special one," he mocks.

Feeling even more nervous, he tries to explain. "I- I can see things and well… gather information that any other person might not be able to see or miss. That kind… of special case."

The Lieutenant looks him over then back to the road, and asks curiously, "So you're some kind of… Super Detective?"

"Yeah… that's a good way to say it," he answers, not making eye contact. He looks out the window, seeing the warehouse as the lieutenant drives up to the main building.

Exiting out of the jeep, Drew was constantly rubbing his eyes. "Whoa!" He stands still for a bit trying to get rid of it but it just keeps coming back.

The Lieutenant exits out noticing Drew reacting awkwardly as his eyes flicker bright blue. Watching Drew rub his eyes, he asks, "You're just going to stand there?"

"No… I'm just looking around." Upon reaching the front main entrance of the warehouse where a couple of police officers are, he goes back to rubbing his eyes again. "Damn… What the… Oh shit," he mutters. He stops at the entrance and then asks, "Can I go inside… alone?"

Talking to one of the officers, The Lieutenant turns back to Drew and asks, "What? Alone? That's not…going to…" noticing his eyes flicker blue, he stops questioning him and remembers what he said in the jeep. He looks at his officers. "Is it clear inside?"

"Yes sir. It's all clear."

He turns to Drew. "The place is yours."

Drew cautiously walks inside the building.

"What the hell is wrong with his eyes?" one of the officers asks as the other officers awkwardly look at Drew walking into the building. One of them turns to the Lieutenant asking, "What's the deal with him?"

"It's weird. He's with the Captain of Maple PD so let him do his thing. …It might not even take-"

Drew exits right back out with his hands covering his eyes, stumbling as he tries to remain balanced while he mumbles, "Too much… OH SHIT too much." He uncovers his eyes looking blankly at nothing as they remain bright blue.

"Too much? Too much of-" Drew then turns and vomits. "I'm guessing you've never seen a dead body before?"

Drew takes a deep breath and just stands there regaining his composure. He shakes his head and begins to go on explaining, "A long time ago I went sea fishing and caught a huge tuna fish. I was young and happy that I managed to do it." He looks back into the building then back to the Lieutenant. "One of the workers asked if he could clean and prep it for me. I said sure… what he did… well… He got a knife… and once he stabbed and sliced it open seeing the guts spill onto the table… It made me sick to my stomach and I hoped that I was never going to see something like that ever again."

The officers look at each other wearily as the Lieutenant asks, "Why are you telling me this for?"

Drew looks back into the building, disturbed. "I just saw it happen again."

Meanwhile, Captain Corrigan reaches her office. Opening the door, the same officer from the fair was inside waiting with the surveillance footage on his laptop. "Is everything in order?" she asks.

"Yes Captain. All the footage is exactly how it should be. Every single kid was logged."

She takes a seat. "Show me everything."

They watch the camera footage on every kid that was kidnapped. To each one, she shakes her head at every worried parent, "Not him… No… not him either…" Kid after kid… "That's all eight… none of them. None of them have anything to do with the fugitive. There has to be… Where is he? He was around when it happened."

"That's him. He's right there," the officer informs as he points.

She sees the fugitive stand near a hair salon. Looking off-camera, he then turns back towards the toy store that's right next door from it. He walks right to it and remains around the main entrance looking down and all around.

"He's looking for something?" the officer asks.

"No… he isn't." she answers. She points at the camera and orders, "Stay on that camera and rewind it."

The officer rewinds, seeing the Fugitive enter the toy store.

"Keep going," she says.

Still rewinding, she quickly orders, "Stop."

The officer stops the video, also noticing why. They both see him next to a kid as he talks to him. "Was that kid always there?" the officer asks.

She leans in and presses play.

The fugitive enters the toy store leaving the kid outside alone refusing to enter the store.

Focusing on the kid… she slowly puts a hand on her mouth concerned, seeing what just happened to the kid. She pauses the video again and leans back on her chair looking at the screen. "Nine kids. Not eight." She sighs.

"He's not a part of it. He's in Mercury Town looking for him," the officer says expressing the same sentiment.

"Yeah… and already he has a body count that's not going to end," she says concerned, as her eyes are on the unconscious kid. "Keep rewinding," she orders, putting her focus on the fugitive again.

They both watch the fugitive interact with the kid 'til she sees them sit down. The fugitive then takes something out of his pocket and shows it to the kid.

She stops the video to get a better look at it. "That… what is that?"

The officer zooms in, trying to figure out what's in his hand. "It's uhh…it's a card. …Black too. …A debit card?" he goes through his files. "What card is he using?" He goes through any purchase trying to find anything that matches.

"Toy store," she blurts out. She hits fast forward on the camera footage and stops when he exited out of the toy store. "Okay, 1:32pm. Find a match of anything odd that was purchased around that moment."

The officer quickly informs, "I found something… Wow, that has to be it. That's a very expensive purchase. Okay… Now to figure out who you are and… where… What…? What?" In disbelief, he kept running the card number over and over again to make sure if where it belongs to was true. "This can't be right… The Resistance?" he says in disbelief.

She gets up from her seat and begins to pace around mumbling to herself, "He's Ex-BOA… also a fugitive on the run… very violent and he's with the Resistance?"

"What now?" he asks, still unsure how to process this information.

She doesn't answer, and stops pacing. She grabs her gun and exits out of her office.

Outside of her office she announces, "ALRIGHT EVERYONE, LISTEN UP!" Everyone stops what they're doing and places there attention onto her. "FROM THIS POINT ON MERCURY TOWN IS ON COMPLETE LOCKDOWN."

"Lockdown, Captain?" One of them asks.

"Yes. Lockdown. No one comes in or goes out. So anyone that's inactive at the moment is now back on duty and to head over to Mercury Town." After giving her order she heads to the exit.

Heading to her patrol car in deep thought, someone greets her. "Hi Captain."

Not answering back, she continues to her squad car. 'I know for a fact that he's not leaving… but… if I can hold the kidnappers here… well… at least that will keep the kidnappers here and not escape.'

She enters her car. 'I just hope we can find and stop him before he goes and kills everyone first.' She drives back to where Drew is.

Rewind one minute, outside of the Maple PD parking lot…

Bert pulls onto the PD's parking lot, disappointed. Once he parks, he spreads his arms out, stretching.

"You've been gone for a while. Got lost?" Tai asks.

All Bert does is tilt's his head to face him with his helmet still on.

Tai grins at Bert's reaction and mocks, "Did you lose her in an itty-bitty town?"

"Yes… I lost her in the itty-bitty town," he mocks back. "I was all over the damn place looking for her. I don't even know where she is, so I gave up and came back here just to fill up the gas tank."

"So you didn't get the news?"

"What news?" he back hands his belly. "That you're on a diet? Yeah, I already know-" He gets bopped on the head. "GAH!"

"NOT THAT! Mercury town is under lockdown."

Readjusting his helmet, he responds, "Are you kidding me? Who gave the order to do that?"

Tai just smiles and answers, "From the Captain." As he answers, he then raises a hand up and waves to say goodbye to someone. "Hi Captain."

"WHAT?!" He quickly turns, seeing Corrigan heading to her squad car. "She's here?" He turns on his bike and slaps his gas tank. "Dammit, I have to fill up the tank," he complains and quickly drives away.

Rewind back to the Mercury Town warehouse…

Drew prepares to enter the warehouse again. He takes a step and stops placing a hand over his head, he then turns to the lieutenant and asks, "Can you… come along with me this time? Need someone to help me bounce assumptions and guesses."

Noticing Drew's eyes flicker again, the Lieutenant looks at his officers who are smiling at Drew, knowing what they were thinking. One of the officers takes a step forward to Drew as he quickly raises an arm up to stop him, answering with, "Fine… let's go."

Entering the warehouse, they head to the center work area that's clear. Once getting to the center, the Lieutenant looks over to Drew who looked like he was about to have a mental breakdown. He sees his pupils keep dilating, flickering blue and returning back to normal only to then dilate once again. Unsure as to why, he asks, "Are you… okay?"

"Yeah… I'm fine. This is normal… well… normal for me," Drew tries to explain.

Through Drew's eyes, he sees patterns of blue lines and swirls appearing in front of him and once enough get together, they create an image of one of the suspects. He can see where most the criminals are and where they go before meeting their demise.

The Lieutenant stares at Drew's eyes flickering. He asks, "You see something… don't you?"

Drew nods in discomfort, answering, "Yeah… I do. It all starts here… where we're standing." He points to several different spots. "There's a dead body right over there… and there and over there…" Once done… he ends at the supervisor's office and points at it. "…and finally over there."

One of the patrol guards materializes in front of him, startling him, and then sees him walk away from where he's standing and goes around a corner. Soon after, the fugitive reveals himself and stabs him in the neck making the vision disappear.

The brutal act makes him flinch and look away. "Geez…" Regaining his nerves, he continues, "I can… I can see how they walk away or how he comes here, and takes them away to go kill them."

The Lieutenant, feeling a bit worried focusing on one single word, he asks, "Take?"

Drew holds his head. "Yeah… because loo-look around."

The Lieutenant looks around, unsure. "What am I looking for?"

"Nothing. No scuffle… no struggle… nothing. Not even a sign of blood around here."

The Lieutenant looks around seeing that he's right. "Yeah. …Why?"

Drew points to a table next to a bench. "That's why. The kids were sitting right there."

The Lieutenant nods, understanding everything now too. "He didn't want them to see them get killed."

Drew glances over to the supervisor's office again. "Yeah… and whoever he shoved into the office really got it bad. He basically saved him for last." Eyes on the super visors office, he sees a Lemur suspect get violently dragged to the office as he claws at the floor. He then desperately holds onto the doorway not to go inside.

And with knife in hand, The Fugitive plunges it into his back forcing him inside, as door gets slammed shut soon afterwards.

The Lieutenant, remembering the fish story, he then adds, "He must've been really important if he gutted him like a fish."

"Right… The question is why?" Drew asks as they both look at the office.

The Lieutenant turns his gaze back to Drew, catching him with his eyes locked to the office as they flicker to it. He needed to take his focus away from it. "So he had a knife… did he use anything else?"

Drew looks away from the office and turns his attention to different points in the warehouse. "If he had a gun, not a single shot was fired. Everything was done with just a knife. All I can visualize is just one stab to the neck."

The Lieutenant watches Drew's eyes flicker blue with every last word. He then adds, "To prevent them from shouting for help?"

Drew nods in concern. "Most likely."

One of the officers enters the building, interrupting them, "Marcus, another bo…-

The Lieutenant glares right back.

The officer quickly corrects himself. "Umm… sorry Lieutenant, another body been found near the maintenance shack. Head was busted wide open."

"Well… now I know where he started. I'm going over there," Drew informs walking away, rubbing his head.

"Alright. I'll stay here and see if we can I.D. anyone here." The Lieutenant keeps an eye on Drew as he walks away with a new-found respect for him. He quickly says, "Drew?"

Hearing his name, Drew turns around not saying anything.

"Good job and sorry about-"

"It's alright," Drew interrupts him. "I'm used to it already." He continues walking away.

Drew heads to one of the side exits of the warehouse. Walking through a passageway area meant for forklifts, he sees that on either side of him are lined with boxes and crates. At the end lies a closed door with an exit sign over it. With very little light to see correctly, he looks at the floor as his sensory intuition kicks in again. "What the… ugh! Why now?" he mutters in pain, as he looks at the floor seeing glowing footprints appear leading to the exit.

Following them to the exit door, he opens it, continuing to follow them outside. After a couple of steps the footprints turn around and head right back into the building.

Confused, he asks to himself, "What? That doesn't make any sense." Leaning down to take a closer look, he realizes that they're new. Quickly backing off he looks back to the entrance and mumbles to himself, "Are these… his? It's his footsteps… but… whu-why go out and then come 'back'… into… Wait. He came back? …He came back." Examining the glowing footprints closely again, making sure that he's right, he deduces, "He came back. Am I seeing this right?"

"You're right."

He hears a voice behind him as everything goes black, getting hit in the back of the head.
