"An Evening of Magic and Fireworks"
By Elena Ibis of Thoth Familia
Late yesterday afternoon, many in the city were startled by a sudden rumble and a bright light. If you had been watching the skies just a few moments before, then you would have seen the magic circles that stacked up to the very clouds themselves and the flash of light that fell down from the skies, piercing through those very same magic circles. It wasn't a message from the heavens or the arrival of a new deity, however. If that was your guess, then don't worry; you weren't alone in being wrong!
The truth was something entirely different. It was actually none other than a spell by one of the rising stars of Orario!
In a city filled with some of the greatest mages in the world, when two talented wizards clash, it tends to become the spectacle of a lifetime, and that was very much the case here. Though, instead of a duel, it was a magic competition! The competition was decided in the morning and commenced in the late afternoon, but fortunately, the news had quickly spread all throughout Orario. This reporter had been privileged enough–along with many others–to watch from the city walls and burn this event of a lifetime into memory!
The two participants were…
Riveria Ljos Alf! A first-class adventurer from Loki Familia and sporting one of the highest levels in the city. With her powerful magic, she was given the fearsome title of 'Nine Hell' by the gods, cementing her status as one of the greatest mages in all of Orario. Was there a need to say anymore? If you haven't heard of her by now, then you must have been living under a rock this past decade.
And this bastion of might and magic was challenged by none other than…
Megumin! The mysterious and feisty mage who's a part of the up-and-coming Eris Familia that had only recently arrived in Orario. From their healing saintess to their teleporting captain, there was no questioning the quality of their members. Despite that, whispers that this mage might be as inadequate as her height had sprung up. Fortunately, those rumors were finally put to rest in a friendly competition that was hosted right outside of our very own city.
And what a spectacle it was!
The competition was a simple one. Whose magic was superior? Not just in power, but chant length, and the range of the destructive area was taken into account as well. For this contest, the two participants each chose one spell each to unleash upon an unfortunate target dummy.
For Riveria, a first-class adventurer and veteran mage, it was expected for hers to be a powerful one, but even my high expectations were exceeded. Her magic, a harmonious mixture of fire and ice, disintegrated the training dummy–and its surroundings–with incomprehensible power. Fire from the ground and ice from the sky, joining together in a continuous spiral that left not even specks of dust in its wake. There was no doubt in this reporter's mind that if a monster were to face this, not even their magic stone would survive intact!
After her awe-inspiring spell, the rest of my fellow audience members became lax, starting up conversations or outright leaving. That was because the next participant, Megumin, was only a level one adventurer. There was no doubt in many of our minds that this was simply a teaching session or a way to put down an overly arrogant upstart. After all, what could such a low level mage possibly do?
Apparently, a lot!
Even those who had not been watching the event from the city walls could see the numerous magic circles piling upward into the skies, like a tower made of magic reaching beyond even the clouds and possibly to the heavens. From the clouds, a bright flash of red appeared at the top and began falling through the center of the circles, gaining both power and speed as it pierced through each one. Like a meteorite, it slammed into the ground and exploded in a massive conflagration.
Powerful! That was one of the only words on this reporter's mind at the time. Even its shockwaves and earthquakes were strong, probably scaring people as far as the port city of Melen!
Massive! Not to mention her side of the field, but it even enveloped Riveria's side as well, obscuring it all in a massive plume of fire and destruction.
Devastating! There was nothing left of the field. Was it blown away? Vanished? Vaporized? All that was left was a huge crater with long trails of smoke that reached the skies and formed their own black clouds. There was no doubt that, for the field to be usable once more, repairs would have to be done. On the bright side, Earth mages will probably be happy with this new source of employment!
And for the diminutive Eris Familia mage who had wanted to win the competition so badly, she had cast her spell to the point of having a Mind Down! Despite that, she retained–or quickly regained–her consciousness, showing a stubbornness that far exceeded her height!
When all the brilliance subsided, it was clear that both mages had put on a great show. The crowd had erupted into thunderous applause, recognizing the unparalleled skill and determination displayed by both mages.
In spite of all previous predictions, the judge ruled in Megumin's favor in the end. The deciding factor? The sheer size of her spell in comparison to Riveria's. Some would argue that the power of Riveria's spell exceeded Megumin's. Others would say that Megumin only won because of a handicap or that Riveria had thrown the competition. For those naysayers that included the goddess of Riveria's Familia, they would be wrong!
The training dummy for each side was completely destroyed so utterly that there was no trace of it left. Unless something stronger was used next time, there would be no way to tell whose spell was stronger. And as for a handicap? Megumin had no such thing! She had even specifically rejected one, and the results showed that she wasn't wrong.
In spite of her low level, that rising mage had somehow triumphed against overwhelming odds, much to the dismay of the many individuals who had decided to engage in betting. I don't even want to imagine how much money was lost! After all, betting on 'Nine Hell' seemed to be the most surefire of bets one could make.
With her being this strong at the first level, how much more will Megumin grow when she reaches level two? What alias would the gods and goddesses of Orario bestow upon this young prodigious mage?
And what impossible feat will the last member of Eris Familia, Darkness, show us in the future? Or will the blond knight simply be obscured by the brightness of her fellow Familia members and be left forgotten by the sidelines?
If you know more and want to share it with the world, send all your observations and tips to Orario Times, and your information may be featured in our next article!

Gojouno Kaguya put down the newspaper.
It would have been all but impossible to ignore the buzz surrounding the city's hottest new Familia. Especially not when their very own red-haired captain had taken a strange liking to the Eris Familia's captain. Alise had always been the type of person to simply go on ahead and do whatever she wanted, no matter the circumstances. That part of her had not changed even slightly since the first time she had met her.
But to go so far as to meet up with Satou Kazuma every morning before their patrols? Offering to mentor and even train someone who wasn't even a part of their Familia? How the normally energetic smile on her face seemed to brighten up even more whenever his name was mentioned?
"...it's definitely 'that' kind of thing," Kaguya stated with absolute seriousness to the other three girls sitting around her table.
"E-ehh…?" Neze stuttered with surprise evident on her face. "Really? You think it's 'that'!?"
"Ugh, it's gotta be," Lyra replied with a groan. "When was the last time you've seen her spend this much time with a guy?"
Ryuu's eyes darted back and forth between her three companions. Her brow scrunched up in confusion as she tried to read along the lines of the conversation. She didn't understand at all. Did something bad happen to Alise? Why did they keep obscuring the main topic of their conversation in code?
"...uhm, what do you all mean by 'that'?" Ryuu tentatively asked. "Is Alise alright? Has she fallen ill?"
All three of her companions shared a look with one another before they all burst out in laughter, much to her embarrassment. Had she said something humorous?
"Pfft… Yeah, you could say it's something like that," Lyra answered with a chuckle. "A really troublesome disease."
"I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that a prudish elf like you wouldn't understand," Kaguya said with a devious smirk. "Come on now, Lion, what do you think happens when a maiden's always seeing one particular guy? Even someone as dense as you should be able to put two and two together."
"...!" Ryuu bristled at the other girl, but held her tongue. While Kaguya might have enjoyed teasing her, the girl's words usually held some manner of truth in them, so Ryuu gave what she said some thought.
When a maiden is always seeing one particular guy…? What did she—Oh. Oh. She understood now. It was indeed, 'that'.
Ryuu felt her cheeks suddenly grow hot in response.
"She's saying that Alise's in lo–"
"I-I know what she's saying!" Ryuu interrupted Lyra mid-sentence as the blush on her face only seemed to get redder by the second.
"Well, well. Just what exactly are you imagining there, Lion?" Kaguya asked, the smirk on her face growing wider all the while. "Aren't you supposed to be a virtuous elf who wouldn't dare to have a single dirty thought on her mind?"
"...!" Ryuu narrowed her eyes as she felt her cheeks grow even redder in response. "Why you…how dare you!?"
"Hey now, come on girls. Let's all calm down here," Neze said as she raised both her hands. "Stop teasing her already, Kaguya."
Before anyone could respond, a loud pair of footsteps came down from the stairs as Alise stuck her head into the room from the doorway.
"Morning girls!" Alise greeted with a smile. "I'm going to go meet up with Kazuma, so I'll see you all later!"
And then she was gone, just as suddenly as she appeared.
"...and there she goes. Our captain, doing whatever she pleases as usual," Lyra replied with a sigh.
"I'm kind of curious about this Kazuma guy now," Neze said as she crossed her arms over her chest. "Isn't he the one with the teleport spell?"
"Indeed, that's him," Kaguya answered before a devilish smirk appeared on her face once more. "I wonder if our dear captain will be taking him back to her room anytime soon?"
Ryuu suddenly stood up and slapped her hands against the table, face bright red all the while.
"W-wait, Alise! I'm coming too!" the elven girl shouted before she rushed out the door after their captain.
"..."
The remaining three girls all shared a look.
"I supposed that we should tag along as well," Kaguya eventually said, breaking the silence. "Just to make sure Lion doesn't do anything."
"Sure," Neze replied with a shrug. "I want to see what kind of guy managed to catch the captain's eye anyway."
"You just want to mess with Lion some more, Kaguya," Lyra dryly replied. "But whatever, I'm curious about him as well."
Lyra was the type of person who kept up with all the rumors and events going on in the city. Knowledge was power after all, and one could never know just how useful even the most mundane speck of knowledge could be until they really needed it. As such, she knew that the current word on the street was that Satou Kazuma had made a killing at the betting tables over that stupid magic contest Nine Hell and that mage from their Familia had. With how stacked the odds were against Megumin, she could only imagine how much money he had made from that bet.
Even if it turned out that Alise wasn't actually interested in the Eris Familia's captain, with his newfound wealth…
Well, she might even have to snatch him up for herself.
~o~
"Haha, well… It just kind of turned out like this," Alise sheepishly said as she rubbed the back of her head. "I guess everyone got curious about our training sessions."
Kazuma had a look on his face that could only be described as 'when one just sucked on a sour lemon'.
"Don't mind us," Lyra stated with a smug grin. "We're just here for the show."
Right. Because having even more cops around was just what he needed. Not to mention that they were all beautiful girls as well. A werewolf, an elf, a pallum, and even a Japanese-looking girl in a kimono! The four of them, all sitting along the city's walls, were going to have front-row seats to him getting his ass kicked by Alise all morning!
Wouldn't his first impression be him lying down in a heap with his ass sticking up in the air? This really was divine punishment for lying about the pantry incident, wasn't it?
Well, screw that!
Kazuma wasn't going to let himself be a laughing stock in front of the peanut gallery. Sorry Alise, but he was going all out this time. He had only been relying on his crappy sword skills the whole time since that was what he was trying to improve, but he was a guy too, damn it! In fact, with their glances and whispers to each other, they were like a bunch of gossiping school girls who just saw him walk into the classroom. He didn't want to be laughed at by a bunch of judgmental girls, cops or not.
He was Satou Kazuma, a supporter of true gender equality, and the type of guy who wouldn't hesitate to drop-kick a woman in the back of the head if she deserved it, damn it!
"Hey, Alise. How about we go all out this time?" Kazuma tried to voice his question in a casual and nonchalant tone, though it was a little frayed since he wasn't used to it. "Spells and skills and all."
"Huh?" Alise raised an eyebrow in response. "We never tried that before, but that's fine with me. Let's see what you got!"
Kazuma grabbed his sword. He kept the sheath on it, of course, they weren't trying to seriously hurt each other here. "Are you ready, Alise?!"
The red-haired girl in question owlishly blinked in response.
"…wow Kazuma, you seem really into it today!" She eventually replied with a grin. "Yeah, let's begi—
"Create water!"
What? He should have waited for her to finish her sentence before he attacked? Hell no, only suckers waited for their opponent to make the first move after the battle started, especially when the other side had such a high difficulty ranking. He who struck first wins first!
The stream of water sped toward Alise. He wasn't sure if it was because of the Falna and its magic stat, but he had noticed that his spells had gotten a bit faster. Not that it mattered when it came to the monster that was known as Alise Lovell. He had gotten his ass kicked enough to know how quick the girl was as she deftly jumped out of the way of his spell.
"Whoa!" Alise yelped in surprise. "You can use water mag—
"Create water! Create water! Create water!"
Kazuma fired off continuous shots of concentrated water in quick succession. Alise, to her credit, still managed to nimbly avoid all of them. Some of the peanut gallery had to actually get up and move out of the way or risk getting splashed by cold water this early in the morning.
"The dungeon isn't going to just let you safely cast spells the whole time, Kazuma!" Alise remarked as she sidestepped another stream of water and rushed forward.
That was fine since he wasn't trying to hit her anyway. She was way too quick for that. He had just wanted to get water everywhere on the ground.
"Freeze!" Kazuma shouted, freezing all of the water on the ground.
Naturally, that included Alise as well.
"What the…?" Alise said as she looked down at her shoes, the soles of which were now frozen to the ground. The problem for her was that her shoes were only partially frozen; if she were to yank her feet up, it could possibly damage or rip the bottom of her shoes. In a real fight, she wouldn't hesitate, but in a spar, it felt like a waste to have to go get it repaired at a shoemaker. "Ice magic?"
What? Attacking a defenseless opponent was a dirty tactic? Hell no! This much was only to be expected. He was just a measly level one adventurer going up against a level three. If anything, he should be applauded for facing off against a higher level adventurer without a handicap.
"Take this!" Kazuma shouted as he charged forward and swung his sword at the trapped girl, only for the said girl to parry his strike with ease and retaliate with her own. His [Auto-Evade] activated, sending him leaping back to avoid the sheathed blade that came uncomfortably close to his neck.
What the hell!? If it weren't for his [Auto-Evade] skill kicking in, she would have taken him out in one strike. Despite being stuck in place, she was still as dangerous as ever.
"You know, I still don't understand how you manage to dodge at the very last moment like that. It's almost like your agility suddenly jumps up a ton of levels!" Alise remarked, just a moment before the stone under her feet shattered. Lifting up her newly freed shoe, she frowned at the sheet of ice stuck to the sole. Tapping it with her knuckles, the ice cracked and shattered, falling off in bits and pieces. She quickly did the same to her other shoe.
"It's a skill!" Kazuma's voice came from a fair distance away. Naturally, he hadn't been twiddling his thumbs while waiting for her all to break free. Instead, knowing that he couldn't win in a straightforward sword fight, he had backed away to create distance while pulling out his bow and a cloth-blunted arrow.
"Snipe!"
The arrow sped through the air toward Alise who was standing in the center of a lake of ice. The redheaded girl swung her sheathed sword to slice the arrow out of the air. However, against her expectations, her slash was too early, missing the arrow by a fraction of a second. Her eyes widened in both shock and confusion. The arrow continued to speed straight toward her forehead.
Did she miscalculate or was there magic at work here?
Alise quickly raised her free hand in front of her face. The cloth-headed arrow hit the center of her palm with a plop sound before rebounding and falling harmlessly to the floor. She blinked before lowering her hand and looking at it with a confused expression on her face.
"...I guess I can't use this hand anymore," Alise mumbled before a cheerful look came back to her face. "This'll be good practice!"
Letting her hand hang limply, the red-haired girl shifted her feet to take on a fencing stance. In that time, Kazuma had increased the distance between them even more, creating a long corridor to reach him. He already had a new arrow notched on the bow's string.
"Snipe!"
Alise leaped over the field of ice, clearing it in one jump. However, the arrow reached her in mid-air. There was no way to dodge, but she never had the intention to. Raising her "wounded" hand in front of her face, she allowed the arrow to hit her wrist.
"Snipe!"
She hit the ground running. The moment that the arrow almost reached her, she dropped her body into a slide, skidding along the stone ground. The arrow looked like it was trying to adjust, but it was too much for even that since it flew past her overhead. She was back on her feet the next moment, running again.
"Snipe!"
The arrow bounced off of her elbow that she used to cover her face. Before Kazuma could notch another arrow, Alise reared back her sword arm and threw her sheathed sword.
"Whoa!" Kazuma had to roll out of the way, the sword hitting the ground where he was previously at and bouncing past him. He had dropped his arrow in the process, but there was no time to retrieve it before Alise was upon him.
"I don't need a sword to fight, you know!"
Alise lashed out with a fist that Kazuma quickly blocked with his bow. There wasn't much impact in the blow, but that was because she didn't want to hurt him too much or break his bow. She was about to follow up with a punch from her other hand, just before she remembered that it was supposed to be 'injured.' That moment of hesitation allowed Kazuma to slip away from her assault and regain his composure.
Of course, that was only for a moment. The red-haired girl was immediately upon him within the next second. Kazuma blocked another strike with his bow before his [Auto-Evade] skill activated again, lurching his body out of the way of a roundhouse kick.
"That works better with a skirt instead of shorts! It's more distracting that way!" Kazuma just barely managed to block another punch by fending it off with his bow, though this strike was strong enough to loosen his grip to a precarious state. Instead of readjusting his grip, he dropped the bow and raised his hand, palm outward. "Flash!"
He made sure to close his eyes just before he had cast his spell. A sudden flash of bright light erupted from his hands, blinding everyone in the area momentarily.
"Wha—
Kazuma didn't let her finish as he looped behind her and pulled out his sheathed sword once more. He swung the sword with all his might, hitting her in the back of the head. She stumbled forward from the blow, but considering the fact that she was a gorilla woman like Darkness, he doubted that even a full-powered swing from him would have done much anyway, blade or no blade.
The rule of their spar was that the winner was the first one to land a clean 'lethal blow', so even though they had been training for almost a week now, that had actually been his first victory.
"Ouch!" Alise yelped as she rubbed the back of her head, though she still retained a big smile, making it seem like her gesture was all just for show. "That was a great move, Kazuma! What was that spell though? I couldn't see anything."
"Flash. It's a spell that makes a blinding light," he explained as he casually held his sword over his shoulder.
Alise seemed to have already recovered as she turned over to him and tilted her head curiously.
"Flash…? Then there was the water and ice…" Alise trailed off as she put a finger under her chin. "Snipe and teleport as well… Just exactly how many spells do you know, Kazuma?"
Kazuma blinked at that.
That was a good question. He had never actually bothered to count. He quickly did a mental count of all of the spells he had actually bothered to learn back in Belzerg. While Alise did mention [Snipe], thief class things like [Lurk] or [Bind] were included in skills rather than magic. Should he include those in the count?
Nah, she only asked for spells.
"Eh." Kazuma shrugged. "More than a dozen."
Even then, it was still too much of a hassle to actually count them all.
"What!?"
The sudden shout of surprise hadn't come from Alise, but a member of the peanut gallery instead. It was the other member of the Astrea Familia that he had met once before, the blonde-haired elf. What was her name again? It was something with an animal, right?
Kyuu Tiger? Shuu Lion?
Oh right, Ryuu Lion. The only real reason he could remember the name was that it was as odd as Megumin.
"That's impossible!"
To say that Ryuu Lion was shocked was an understatement. As an elf, she knew the value and rarity of magic. For a rookie adventurer to possess more spells than even someone like 'Nine Hell' was unbelievable. In fact, all of her companions seemed equally taken aback. Even Alise seemed really surprised, so much so that her sudden outburst hadn't even managed to grab their attention. Normally, Kaguya would have already started teasing her for the out of character outburst.
"Haha, that's a good one, Kazuma!" Alise laughed. "I almost believed you there for a second."
The boy in question only raised an eyebrow in response.
"I'm not joking though…?"
"Eh…?" Alise tilted her head. "You're being serious?"
"Yeah. Is it really that big of a deal?" Kazuma asked, confused. Wasn't it normal for mages to have a bunch of spells in their arsenal? Aside from Megumin and her crazy obsession with Explosion magic, every other mage he had met all had multiple spells that they could use.
"It is. Aside from 'Nine Hell', I don't know anyone else who can match your spell repertoire," Ryuu simply stated. She didn't miss how his eye seemed to twitch at the mention of Riveria's alias. Did those two have a history? If so, perhaps that had to do with his ridiculous spell repertoire. "It is abnormal."
"It must be a rare type of skill that allows him to use multiple spells," Lyra chipped in. "Like that chant connection thing that 'Nine Hell' has."
"Okay, can we stop calling her that? 'Nine Hell'?" Kazuma inwardly cringed. He was getting second-hand embarrassment just thinking about it. "Seriously, who's coming up with these names?"
"It is a prestigious title that was bestowed upon her by the very gods themselves," Ryuu replied with narrowed eyes. "You should not belittle it."
"What."
"It is exactly as I said," Ryuu continued. "It was a prestigious title given to her by the gods for her achievement of reaching the next level."
"...and how exactly is that decided?"
Ryuu frowned in response. Did he really know nothing about how Orario worked? Shouldn't this have been covered in the guild's introductory lessons for all adventurers?
"The gods meet up for a divine council every three months," Lyra explained. "Titles are usually given during those meetings to adventurers who have achieved a level up."
"So that's why the guys at the bar called you…" Kazuma left his words hanging as he glanced over toward Alise.
"Yep!" the red-haired girl cheerily replied with a peace sign. "The gods gave me the title, 'Scarlet Harnel'! And Ryuu's title is 'Gale'! Super cool, right?"
Kazuma had a face of complete and utter contempt.
"...can I opt out of that?"
"Oh?" Kaguya cut in. "You don't want a title from the very gods themselves?"
"Absolutely not."
"Why?"
"Because." Kazuma frowned. The moment that he got something chuuni like that, Megumin was for sure going to use that title whenever she spoke to him. Not only was that going to be a hassle to deal with, but going from what he had seen of everyone's 'titles' so far, the gods all had terrible naming sense. "Rather than be at the whims of people who I never met before, I'd rather choose my own."
"You can't do that!" Alise suddenly shouted in response.
"Why not…?"
"It's…it's tradition!" At Kazuma's unconvinced expression, Alise crossed her arms over her chest. "No means no, and that's final!"
"Ara? You sure sound worried about him, captain," Kaguya teased. "Is he really that important to you?"
"Of course he is!" Alise answered without hesitation. "He's my super cute junior!"
"Tch." Kaguya looked away. Their captain was as un-teasable as ever. Boring.
"Alise…!" Ryuu called out in shock, as a light blush filled her cheeks. "T-then…are you really…? It's really 'that'?!"
Kaguya quickly regained her smirk. Their resident innocent little elf, on the other hand, was almost too easy to mess with.
"Hmm…?" Alise tilted her head. "What do you mean, Ryuu?"
Kazuma watched the ongoing exchange between the three girls with a bored look on his face. It felt like he was watching a scene straight out of one of those popular imported Korean dramas that his mom was always watching. He glanced over toward the pallum girl who just gave him an amused shrug in response.
"We're being lenient here," Lyra said with amusement clear on her face. "But if you throw the title they give you back at their faces, a lot of people will get angry, and it won't be funny anymore. Especially with those guys under Freya."
"Freya?"
"The goddess of beauty," Neze—the werewolf girl who had been quiet the entire time—answered. "The ones in her Familia are…charmed by her. An insult to their goddess would mean war."
"Oh, great. Yanderes…" Kazuma groaned. It was one thing to mess around with people who hated his guts, but it was another thing entirely to deal with love-struck idiots like Mitsu-whatever his name was. Instead of unnecessarily adding more to the plate, it would be more prudent to wait and see if his nickname was actually stupid before rebelling. "Fine, fine. So when do I get a title?"
"When you reach level two," Lyra explained. "Every three months, the gods convene at the Denatus to hand out titles to every adventurer who levels up."
"Don't worry, Kazuma," Alise said in a bright and cheery voice. It looked like they were finally done with their shenanigans. "I'm sure you'll get a super cool title! For a believer of justice like you, I'm sure that even our goddess will fight on your behalf at the Denatus for a suitable title!"
Considering people were getting names like 'Nine Hell' and 'Scarlet Harnel'? He wouldn't hold his breath. Megumin and the crimson demons would probably love the idea; chuuni stuff like that was right up their alley.
"...just out of curiosity, what are the rest of your titles?" Kazuma asked, in spite of knowing that he probably wasn't going to like the answer.
"Mine is 'Bloody Justice Fang'!" Neze excitedly answered. The image he had of the cool aloof werewolf girl just completely shattered in his mind. It was like when he saw Aqua for the first time, just before the godly image she had was completely shattered when she opened her mouth. "Amazing, right?"
Kazuma couldn't help but feel sorry for her.
"Thrail," Lyra simply replied.
He didn't know what it meant, but perhaps it was better than he didn't. That one was probably the best one that he had heard so far.
"Yamato Rindou," Kaguya stated with a proud expression on her face.
Yamato Dragon Valor? The way she managed to say something like that while looking completely dignified was a skill in and of itself. As a fellow Japanese person who knew just exactly how cringe that title was, he couldn't help but walk over to her and pat her on the shoulder.
"I'm sorry for your loss."
With a blank expression on her face, Kaguya slowly began inching her katana's blade out of its sheath with her thumb.
