Chapter 30: Secret of the Triforce

Out of the corner of his eye, Link noticed bright red hair flowing in the wind. It was Nabooru. She stared off into the congested desert air; endless sand covered the view of her far-off home. But she didn't mind it; watching the particles dance in the rough air was a comforting sight. It reminded her of when life was normal – she was a thief who enjoyed the excitement, the danger, and the satisfaction of uncovering a lost secret.

Nabooru continued admiring the beautiful chaos, knowing that she would be leaving it behind in a moment. She heard quick footsteps in the sand and turned to see Link running over to her.

"Well, well," she said, smirking. "Looks like someone's grown up to be a competent swordsman. "I've gotta thank you for everything. I really screwed up. I entered that temple to obtain the gear needed to defeat Ganondorf. But those old witches had other plans and brainwashed me. I was set to serve Ganondorf. A fate worse than death. Luckily, I'm tougher than those crones have anticipated. It took a while, but I managed to break their spell."

A golden ring appeared under her feet. She wasn't startled. It was like she anticipated this moment – where she would become apart of something incredible. She felt content in accepting her destiny.

"Oh, guess what?" Nabooru said. "Turns out I've been chosen as the Sage of Spirit. Never would've thought a thief like me could be given such a big responsibility. But using this power, I will help you defeat Ganondorf." There was a flicker of disdain in her eyes. "He's a disgrace to our race – no, to the entire land of Hyrule. Unfortunately, I can't join you. But perhaps those new friends of yours can. I watched the way you four fought. With them by your side, he will suffer a devastating defeat.

She felt warm; it wasn't from the desert. The light embraced her; it was relaxing, like diving into the save haven of your bed.

"Catch you later, kid," Nabooru said with a gentle smile. Soon, she was consumed by the light, and vanished before everyone's eyes.

Link stared at the spot where Nabooru once stood. He exhaled in relief. The battle was over. She was safe. But, more importantly, he was one step closer to extracting the hatred that infested the world's core; any moment it would implode, making the planet shrivel like a raisin, and then collapse into tiny specs, carrying nothing more than painful memories of its demise.

Link's chest tightened; there was one more obstacle he had to overcome before achieving peace. It had been years since he last saw Ganondorf. When they first me, he was nothing more than a child – carrying a sword no bigger than a knife. The king towered over him, smirking, filled with unyielding confident.

Link saw the shadows length below his feet; Ganondorf seemed to be growing taller, enveloping the night sky. He could crush him with his bare hand. But he had to scale the daunting mountain that stood before him. To save his home.

To atone….

"What was that about?" Sora asked, as he and others walked over to him. "Everything okay?"

Link turned to the group with a reassuring smile. "Yeah. Everything's going to be fine."

"He talks!?" Yoshi asked in surprise.

Sora and Luigi glared at him. Yoshi's covered his mouth from letting that question slip on a crude bar of soap. After introductions, Sora explained their encounter with Sheik, and how he asked them to assist the Hero of Time.

"I see," Link said. "Thanks, Sora. You and your friends seem to be quite the heroes."

Sora placed both arms behind his head, grinning; pride seeped through the pours of his face. "Ha! We've traveled to bunch of different places, and have fought a bunch of baddies. We're the real deal."

"Hmm, I'm having trouble seeing Link from back here," Luigi said in a teasing tone. "Not sure if it's because of your split ends or your head inflating."

Sora chuckled. "Very funny." He turned back to Link. "So Sheik told us you're searching for…Sages?"

"Precisely," Link said. "When Ganondorf took over, the Sacred Realm that houses the Triforce called upon the Six Sages. My task is to search this world for them. That woman you saw was the last one." He donned an inquisitive expression. "But what I'm curious about is why you three wish to challenge the King of Evil himself. He's not one to be taken lightly."

"You don't have to tell us," Luigi said; his shoulders quivered in fear. "We saw what he did to the marketplace."

There was a dejected haze covering Link's heroic glow. He sighed. "The marketplace – it was so beautiful. I can't believe that I let it…never mind. Anyways, what business do you have with him?"

"He managed to capture one of our friends," Sora said, ignoring Links peculiar statement for the moment. "Someone who is very close to us. Sheik says you possess something that can break through the entrance to his castle."

"Oh, right!" Link unsheathed his sword. Everything about its design was perfection – right down to its sharpness. Sora didn't even want to imagine how Twinrova felt being cut to shreds like blades of grass. "This is the Master Sword – a weapon crafted specifically to vanquish evil. Using this blade, I have fought some of Ganondorf's toughest minions – and have braved the most dangerous temples."

Luigi's jaw dropped in astonishment. "All by yourself?" Link nodded. "Mama-mia! We've been through a lot, too, but I couldn't imagine doing it alone. No wonder Sheik refers to you as: 'The Hero of Time.'"

"Well, there's more to it than…" Someone pushed Link forward.

"Aren't you forgetting someone?" the fairy asked.

"Oh, no!" Yoshi said in a panic. "Witches back!"

The fairy flew over to Yoshi, hovering right above him. "I'm no witch!"

"Oh, thank goodness," Yoshi said, sighing in relief. "It just a talking firefly."

"Firefly!?" the fairy asked, insulted. "You naughty boy! Where are your manners? I'm a fairy."

Link chuckled. "Aw, I wasn't going to forget about you. This is my loyal companion Navi. She's been journeying with me since the beginning. Her vast knowledge has gotten me out of plenty of predicaments."

"That's right," Navi said in a boastful tone. "And any enemy of Ganondorf's is a friend of mine. Please, if you have any questions about Hyrule, feel free to ask."

"Sure," Sora said. "Thanks!"

Link noticed his fairy companion was starting to slowly descend towards the ground. "Is something troubling thee, Navi?"

For a moment, Navi remained still. She couldn't even bring herself to stare into his blues eye. Guilt had been chained around her neck. Then, she looked right into them, seeing a young boy who was alone, frightened, and needed guidance. She was there for him when the world seemed vast and opposing – when overcoming obstacles felt impossible. Her voice served as a guide.

But, as she stared deeper, that little boy grew like a strong tree; he had become a warrior, confident, fearless – his resolve was as sharp as the Master Sword. She hovered over to him, still covered in a thin black sheet of guilt.

"I-I'm sorry," Navi said in a sad tone. "I failed to assist you against those dark creatures. I couldn't even find a weakness. I've…I've let you down."

"What?" Link asked, surprised. "Don't be ridiculous!" Navi looked to see a sincere gleam in his eyes. "You know full well that you've been a valuable companion ever since I left Kokiri Forest. Failure is nigh avoidable. It's something we must cope with eventually."

"You're just saying that," Navi said, blushing. "I mean, look at you: you're all grown up, and have become the hero of legend. Even the mightiest of Ganondorf's subordinates have fallen before you. What good am I to you?"

Link never lost that positive glow. It conjured every sentence from the heart. "Support, Navi. Sometimes in our darkest hours, we need a voice that will encourage us to keep fighting. I was a little boy when our journey first began. Do you think I would have survived by myself? No. I might've been overwhelmed. That's why you were, and still are, my guiding light."

While not understanding the full details, it was apparent that Link had been on this quest since childhood. Sora could only imagine the fear and uncertainty he faced stepping out into Hyrule Field for the first time.

He could relate; when he first arrived in Traverse Town, everything was intimidating. He was in a rockslide of thoughts and feelings. Finding his friends seemed impossible. But, then, like Link, he found his own support, and didn't seem daunted anymore.

Sora placed his arms around Luigi and Yoshi. "Link's right. I've been on a big journey with these two. Dunno if I've be here right now without them. Sometimes encouragement can be the best kind of help."

Navi was happy to hear those words. Even after all this time, Link still valued her companionship. Time itself could never tamper with the bond they shared.

"Thank you – both of you." Perking herself up, Navi flew over to Link. "You can count on me, partner! I'll be right by your side until we defeat Ganondorf!"

"I knew I could count on you!" Link said.

"See?" Luigi said. "Link's greatest weapon is his sword; your greatest weapon is your mouth."

In an instance, Navi flew right into Luigi's face like an enraged fireball, and started poking him. "What!? Well, this fairy's going to show you how efficiently she uses her weapon!"

"Stop!" Luigi said, cowering, covering his face from more pokes. "I was joking!"

After having a good chuckle, Sora asked, "So do you mind if we tag along?"

"Of course not," Link said. "The road ahead will be dangerous, though. Think you're up for it?"

Sora grinned. "Absolutely! We're ready for anything!"

Link was impressed by Sora's eagerness to help. Not many people in Hyrule carried that strong desire on their shoulder. He and his friends had already proven themselves in battle. Sheik was right; they would make great allies. Link was going to need all the assistance to defeat Ganondorf.

Right now, they needed depart for the Temple of Time, where Sheik would be waiting for them. After calling Navi to his side, Link pulled out a light blue wind instrument; it contained perfectly cut holes and a mouthpiece that projected from the body. Below the mouthpiece was a silver ring; embedded on it were three golden triangles.

"I've seen a picture of that in school," Sora said, fascinated by the instrument. "It's an ocarina, right?"

"More than just an ocarina," Link said. "Its magic has the power to teleport us to anywhere in Hyrule. Including the Temple of Time

Luigi wiped his brow from the sweat. "Oh, good. Wasn't looking forward to walking back in the desert. Heard the view's terrible. And there's that whole dehydration thing, too."

Yoshi noticed Link was fixated on the ocarina. Sadness dripped from his blue eyes. "Something wrong?"

"Well, it's just," Link said, almost reluctant to recount the past, "this girl named Zelda gave it to me. She was a close friend, and entrusted its ancient power to me. I've been trying to find her for a long time. And I don't know if I ever will."

"Don't worry," Navi said. "I'm sure the princess is okay. As long as she's secluded, Ganondorf will never find her."

Something tickled the back of Luigi's head upon hearing that name. "Wait a minute. Princess…"

"….Zelda?" Yoshi said.

That feeling reached Sora, and then ruptured into an alarming realization. "Oh, that's right! She's in trouble, Link!"

"What!?" Link asked in shock. "Then there's no time to waste! Everyone, gather around!"

After the group did what Link instructed, he placed his mouth on the ocarina, and played a beautiful melody. Each note was calm, yet uplifting, as if it inspired hope. Given the situation, they needed to keep their spirits high; soon, they would be thrust straight into a thunderstorm, where Ganondorf's unfathomable power would attempt to strike them down with lighting.

The group vanished into tiny yellow orbs and flew away into the clear blue sky.

It was a strange sensation to fly over the vast field; the entire world was coated in a golden tint, and every part of the body felt numb. Still, the view was incredible – there was so much Sora wanted to see. Wasn't that the goal he, Riku, and Kairi set out to achieve? To visit new, exciting locations?

Things didn't go exactly as planned – those aspirations had been warped by the spinning wheel of reality.

They soon approached the marketplace. Before they could enter, an invisible barrier knocked them back a great distance, past Lon Lon Ranch. Everyone emerged from the light, falling onto the ground.

Luigi and Yoshi landed on top of Sora. He moaned from the pain. "Why do they always land on my back?"

"Seems like I'm not the only one part of someone's sick, twisted joke," Luigi said.

Link slowly rose to his feet, stretching his muscle to lessen the aches. "You guys alright?"

"Yeah," Sora asked as he and other stood up, too. "What happened?"

"Not sure," Link said. "When we were close to the marketplace, I felt a strange dark energy coming from within."

"Peculiar," Navi said, with one foot placed in a deep puddle of thought. "It felt akin to those dark creatures we fought. There must be a connection."

Sora prepared to load the answer into the chamber of his throat, but then he saw Luigi glance at him with disproval. He sighed – did it even matter at this point? They've already been meddling in various worlds. Would the consequences really be catastrophic? Regardless, he would respect his friend's wishes.

"Well, whatever it was," Sora said, "it's gonna take us longer to get there. We can't sit around."

Link pulled out the ocarina. "Worry not. I'll call my horse. She'll get us there in no time."

"You have a horse?" Sora asked with a sudden tone of excitement.

Link smiled in pride. "The best steed a man could ask for. Wait till you meet her."

He played another uplifting song on the ocarina. Its soothing notes swam gracefully through everyone's ears as they listened. Sora and Yoshi recognized the song; it was the same one Malon sang last night. It was apparent that Link must've had obtain his steed from her. But that didn't matter right now – the familiar melody muffled out the surrounding chaos. They needed that moment of reprieve – to cut off the excessive fat of worry.

When the song ended, everyone waited – Sora especially. It had been forever since he rode on a horse. He remembered visiting a farm with Riku and Kairi when they were younger. They would enjoy getting free rides from the farmer – a jolly soul. He couldn't wait to relive those euphoric feelings of nostalgia again.

But nothing happened. No sounds or anything. Sora assumed that she didn't hear the ocarina. Suddenly, his thoughts were interrupted by a loud neigh. And it came from behind Luigi and Yoshi. They turned to see a mare with lustrous red hair galloping towards them. The two leaped out of the way before she could run into them.

She stopped in front of Link master, and stood on her hind legs in enthusiasm; her snow-white mane flew in the wind. She was young, vigorous, and prepared to assist Link without hesitation. After calming down, the horse landed on all fours. Link stroked her giant nose in affection. Luigi and Yoshi look at each other in bewilderment.

"Ho-how did…wh-where did she come from?" Luigi asked, astonished.

"Maybe she one of those magical horses," Yoshi said. "Does she have tattoo on her butt? Did getting one of those hurt?"

Luigi frowned at him. "I think someone's been spending too much time watching TV."

"Sorry about that," Link said. "She kinda goes into a trans when she hears that song. You two okay?"

"Fine," Luigi said as he brushed the grass off his overalls. "Being trampled by a horse wouldn't be the worse thing I've experienced." He shuddered upon remembering being a hapless teddy bear in the iron grip of Snorlax.

Ignoring Luigi's strange behavior, she turned back to his horse, keeping that proud glow fastened to his visage. "This is Epona – the fastest horse in Hyrule."

After permitting the three to pet her, Sora approached Epona with caution. At first, she snorted in dismay, shaking her head, nervous at the appearance of this strangers. But Sora took his time, speaking in a low, soft voice. He took methodical steps towards her. Link stroked the side of Epona's nose, as if wiping the stains of anxiety off her elegant coat.

Soon, Sora was close enough to pet her. She relaxed, feeling his warm fingers glide through her hair.

"She's beautiful," Sora said. "My friend Kairi would freak if she saw a horse like this."

Link smiled. "Thanks. Although I'm not sure how I'd be able to fit all of you on her."

"Don't worry about it." Luigi hopped onto Yoshi's back. "Got my own ride. You go ahead, Sora."

"Really!?" Sora asked, overjoyed. "Awesome!"

Link climbed onto Epona's back, helped Sora on, and grabbed a hold of the rein. They weren't even moving yet, but the anticipation bounced around Sora's stomach like rubber balls.

"Hang on," Link said. He pressed his feet against the mare's ribs. "Hiya!"

Sora thought his head was going to fall off from the sudden jolt of Epona running. Link wasn't kidding; she was fast! Her galloping pounded against his ears. He felt the relentless assault of the wind on his face. But the sense of speed was exhilarating. He was having so much fun. Sora cheered as Epona's pace accelerated.

Yoshi was left awestricken by Epona's velocity. He felt like a slug next to her.

"Hey!" Luigi said, getting his attention.

Yoshi hurried after them. No matter how fast the dinosaur ran, he would never see beyond Epona's white tail. Sora could see the marketplace growing closer with each passing second. Although glad to be on the right track, he knew the ride would be over soon. He didn't want it to end. Those feelings of elation had soared into the sky, and he didn't want them to plummet just yet.

Link noticed a fence nearby, and smirked with confidence. "Want to see a neat trick?"

"You bet!" Sora said.

Link commanded Epona to run faster, and when they reached the fence, she leaped over it. She landed elegantly on the ground. No obstacle could diminish the mare's spirit.

Yoshi noticed Epona's impressive feat. "Ooh!"

"Uh-uh!" Luigi said, shaking his head in sudden terror.

"Yeah, yeah!"

"Uh-uh!"

"Yeah, yeah!"

Foreseeing disaster, Luigi shut his eyes. Yoshi just managed to clear the fence, and landed with the grace and dignity of a baby chick learning how to walk. Luigi opened his eyes to see they were not staring at the ground. Yoshi glanced at him with a sky smirk.

"O-Oh, I knew you could jump that fence," Luigi said with a sheepish smile. "No questions asked."

Yoshi rolled his eyes. "Sure, Luigi. Sure."

It wasn't long before Epona arrived outside the marketplace. Sora leaped off her, his body still trembling from the exhilarating ride. He was ready to face the next challenge, including the zombies that lay snug beneath the dark quilt of the marketplace. Sora looked up at Link. He started at the entrance with a solemn expression.

Memories of the past streamed down his mind like wistful tears. For every good memory he had of the once prosperous town, another one poured down, filled with acid, reminding him of his actions. But there was still a chance to bring carefree voices back to the empty town.

"You okay?" Sora asked in concern.

Link leaped off Epona. "Fine. Just lamenting."

Sora could empathize with him. He knew what it was like to lose a whole town to the darkness. But, like with Link, he had to keep his gaze fixed on the future – sure, it was murky, but the light that would restore his home was waiting to be awaken.

"Hey, that was fun!" Sora said, changing the subject. "After all this is over, you've gotta show me how to ride."

"Sure thing," Link said. He gave a playful smile. "I take it you want to impress that friend of yours, huh?"

Navi tittered. "Link!"

"Well, I…uh…" Sora said, flustered, blushing uncontrollably. "…you….know…it's always great to immerse myself in a new hobb—oh, look! The others are coming!"

They turned to see Yoshi approaching them, tongue hung out, exhausted. Any second his body would collapse faster than an unstable bridge being crushed by hundreds of trucks.

Link looked guilty. "Oh, dear. Maybe I should have gone slower."

"It fine," Yoshi said between each breath. "Could've been worse. Me could've had Mario on back."

Luigi burst out laughing. "Oh, I'm going to tell him that one when we get home!"

Link had no idea who they were referring to, but it was immaterial. He glanced back at the marketplace; a sense of worry stung at his chest. How was Zelda in trouble? Did Ganondorf find her? He hated to imagine the worse outcome. Hopefully Sheik would provide the answer he sought.

Once Yoshi had recovered, the group faced the town's dark maw, and ventured forth into its perilous throat.

As they reached the center of town, Sora felt a cold, fearful grip sink its claws into his feet. The zombies were meandering through the town, in search of juicy skin to penetrate with their deteriorating teeth. Sora's thought his heart buried itself into his stomach; the trauma was real.

"Guys," Sora said in a whisper. "I see dead people."

The zombies noticed the group and started shuffling towards them.

"Those are Re-Deads," Link said. He pulled out his ocarina. "Threat not. I'll take care of them."

Link played a cheerful tune that was reminiscent of waking up in the morning. Another pleasant song for the ears. Not so much for the Re-Deads, as they froze right in place. Everyone blinked in complete surprise. Did the power of music just immobilize them? Sora thought his journey couldn't get any more bizarre, but every new world was determined to prove him wrong.

"Man, that ocarina is somethin' else," Sora said, astonished. "Wish my old recorder did that during music class. I'd skip it in a heartbeat."

"Okay," Luigi said, jubilant, pulling out his hammer. "Let's go get th—" From out of nowhere, Link threw blue bombs into the Re-Deads, causing them to explode into pieces. Luigi's draw dropped in surprise. "What!? What!? How!? Where did—? What!?"

Link noticed Sora and Yoshi were just as slack jawed. He gave a modest chuckle. "I like to be prepared for anything. C'mon! Let's keep moving."

They were beyond amazed by Link's resourcefulness. How did he carry so many useful items? Did his pockets lead to an endless supply closet? Regaining their focus, Sora and Yoshi followed Link to the unscathed temple that was near the marketplace.

But Luigi stood in frozen silence for a moment, and then said, "What!?" again.

Sora leaned his head back upon seeing the temple's innards. It was an incredible sight. Despite the damage done to the marketplace, this ancient shrine remained unscathed from Ganondorf's toxic touch. The walls were built with gray cobble stone; the entire foundation was held together by four pillars on each side.

Somehow, despite the town being eclipsed in perpetual darkness, white lights shined through the windows, reflecting off the immaculate floor, which had diamond shaped patterns. Ahead of them was a long red carpet that led to large, square shaped door that had been opened.

"This place is beautiful," Luigi said.

"Not even Ganondorf's dark power could tarnish such a holy place," Link said. He focused his gaze on the opened door. "This is where I first picked up the Master Sword seven years ago."

Sora spun around to face him in surprise. "Wow! You were fighting Ganondorf for that long!?"

"Not exactly," Navi said. "He was just a cute little boy back then. Too young to use the sword. He was sealed in here until he became of age to wield it."

Link held out the Master Sword, glancing at it in deep thought. "Sometimes I wonder…did Zelda and I do the right thing?"

"Whatdya mean?" Sora asked.

Before Link could open his mouth, a Thief appeared right in front of him; while startled, he brought the Master Sword up to catch the Heartless' incoming attack. He pushed it away, leaped forward, and cut it across the torso. More Heartless appeared, trapping the group in a dark circle.

"Impossible!" Navi said, appalled. "This is a holy place!"

Sora summoned the Keyblade. "Don't think these guys are concerned about the law!"

With Link's help, the group fought their way through the Heartless. But it wasn't easy; they were determined to leave with just even one beating heart. Link threw bombs at the Heartless, causing them to fly into the air from the explosion. Sora leaped after them, twirled his body around, and slashed through each one.

Another Thief tried to attack Sora from behind, but Link stabbed it in the back with his hookshot. With the Heartless stuck in place, Sora had no trouble disposing of it. Luigi swung his hammer in low, tripping a Theif. Looking over his shoulder, he saw another bringing its blade down from above. He spun around, held his hammer with both hands, and blocked the strike.

Luigi kicked the Thief in the stomach, causing it to stumble backwards. Yoshi leaned over, allowing the Heartless to roll over his back, and fall onto the floor. Link stabbed the creature in the chest before it could move. A red flying Heartless appeared right above the Hero of Time. But Link didn't give it a chance to attack, as he drew an ice arrow and launched it into the creature's wing.

The attack was so strong that it sent the Heartless flying into one of the pillars. Link fired more arrows into its wings; it was like being attacked by angry hornets. Each piercing strike was unbearable; not to mention, freezing. But it wasn't finished yet. Extending a weakened hand, it prepared to launch a fire attack at Sora.

"Sora, look out!" Link said.

Sora noticed the Heartless charging the attack. He was currently fighting a Soldier. Thinking quickly, he grabbed the Soldier and held it in front of him like a shield. As expected, the Soldier recieved full scorching force of the attack. Sora pushed the Soldier forward, cut it in half, and then threw the Keyblade at the flying one. The tip stabbed it right in the chest; the Heartless' screeches of agony echoed throughout the room as it vanished.

With the battle over, everyone regrouped. The peaceful sanctum had been breached by a thick fog of darkness.

"How could this happen?" Navi asked, unable to process the ensuing chaos. "No evil can lay harm to the temple!"

Link pondered this situation for the moment. "I'm not sure these creatures are evil to begin with."

"You call attacking us not evil!?" Luigi asked with a loud, incredulous tone in his voice.

Yoshi snorted. "Frankly, it rude!"

"When I was a child, I confronted Ganondorf for the first time," Link said. Just reminding him of that encounter made his throat contract in disgust. "His power is instilled with nothing but anger and hate towards the good will of man. I can sense that these creature's do not share that same form of malice. What are they? What do they seek?"

Normally Sora would start arguing with Luigi over how immoral it was to keep their knowledge hidden behind a tinted glass wall. But Link's observation starting seeping into his skull, introducing a new perspective he had never considered before. Sora had always assumed the Heartless were evil, especially given how they were working for Bowser and the others.

They have caused nothing but misery to everyone for who knows how long. It was easy to surmise that: darkness equals bad; light equals good. But what about Digby and Riku? They were not bad people; just misguided. Sora found himself crawling through a rabbit hole of thoughts. And there was no light to guide him through it.

But his thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice. "All this time has passed, and you're still just as naïve as ever."

Everyone turned to see Ganondorf standing nearby the opened door. In his right arm he held an unconscious Sheik. The elegant light that illuminated the temple shriveled in fear before the king's might.

"Ganondorf!" Link said with a fierce tone in his voice.

"You have grown since our last encounter, boy," Ganondorf said with a confident smirk. "Old enough to wield such a useless weapon. I do not fear the sacred blade."

Everyone got into their battle positions. They planned to make his arrogance grovel before their teamwork.

"And it seems you brought a few friends with you," Ganondorf said, unimpressed. "Not that it'll make a difference once I gain the remaining pieces of the Triforce."

Link noticed Sheik. His blood pressure rose. He hated seeing someone hurt an innocent life. Especially one he considered a stalwart ally. "I don't know what business you have with Sheik, but unhand him before this 'useless blade' penetrates your feeble heart!"

"Still head strong, I see!" Ganondorf said, laughing. "Willing to face me despite the odds. Your title of hero is nothing more than a lie, just like this so called 'Sheikah' here."

"What do you mean?" Link asked with suspicion.

Ganondorf stood Sheik upright and grabbed the back of his shirt. "This child happens to be the seventh sage. Seems like in your attempts to awaken them, you missed one right under your nose." He held up the back of Sheik's hand. "But this story has an even bigger twist! Observe!"

Ganondorf then held up the back of his own hand now. The image of a faded Triforce materialized, except the lower left tringle was glowing. Link felt a warm tingle on the dorsal part of his hand. Glancing at it, he saw the same faded Triforce; only the triangle on the lower right glowed. Ganondorf showed the same image on Sheik's hand; and, as expected, the top triangle was bright.

"Wh-What's going on?" Link asked, startled.

"Isn't it obvious? All three pieces of the Triforce are resonating with each other," Ganondorf said. "When it shattered, only I received the Triforce of Power. The other two found shelter elsewhere."

Sora gasped. "So are you saying the other two are inside Link and Sheik?"

"Quite observant for a meddling outsider," Ganondorf said. "All the pieces are in place. Soon, I will subjugate this entire world!" His smile widened. "And it's all thanks to you, Link!"

The sins of the past whispered into Link's ear. But he refused to let them inside. With nothing but contempt for the king, he swung his sword. "That's enough!"

"Your body has grown, but your mind is stagnant – a child who is unable to accept the harsh truth of his actions." For a moment, Ganondorf almost felt sorry for Link. He was nothing more than a forest boy who wanted to play hero; and was delusional to the consequences that would follow. "Oh well. I don't expect a stubborn fool like you to understand. But perhaps this might get your attention."

The top tringle on Sheik's hand grew brighter, and consumed him in pure white light. Everyone watched in shock as his body changed shape. As the light faded, Ganondorf shoved him onto the ground.

Or, rather, her onto the ground.

Sheik was, in fact, a woman. Her long blonde hair was disheveled. She wore a dress that had various shades of pink. Resting on her shoulder she wore a golden epaulette. Perfectly cut jewels helped form her elegant tiara. Finding her inner strength, the woman looked up at Link. Inside her blue eyes was nothing but grief – a feeling that she had trudged through for seven long, painful years.

Link's heartrate accelerate. He found it difficult to breath, as if his emotions were strangling him. It didn't seem possible.

Navi was in the same state of consternation. "Is…is….that….?"

"ZELDA!" Link said.

"Link…I'm sorry," Zelda said. She found it difficult to even look at him. Her conscience had been lowered into a well of guilt. "I had to remain disguised to avoid being caught."

Every rational thought had been discarded through Link's ears. He didn't care if Ganondorf was standing in front of them; his only thought was rescuing her. But as soon as he started running, Ganondorf held out his hand, unleashing a pink ball of energy. Zelda was encased in a giant pink crystal. Link ran over, banging on the glass, hoping to shatter it.

Ganondorf laughed again. "Seems like she hasn't changed either. Thinks she had enough foresight to foil my plans. Such ignorance."

Zelda breathing grew short, as if the crystal consumed ever last bit of air from her lungs. The room started fading in and out of existence. She was exhausted. Any moment she would collapse. It was like her energy was being digested within the crystal's stomach.

But, while grasping that last bit of strength, she held her hand out to Link. "Take this."

A glow appeared below his vision, and followed the trail to his pockets. He pulled out his arrows; they were encased in a golden sleeve of light.

"I've enhanced them," Zelda said, breathless. "Use…them..to….defeat….him."

She collapsed against her glass prison. Panicked, Link slammed his fists against the crystal, calling her name, hoping for any type of movement. But she remained motionless; the excessive banging couldn't penetrate her unconscious prison. Everything started to fall apart around Link. Ganondorf's shadow eclipsed over Link's heroic spirit; he had never felt so discouraged before.

Sora gritted his teeth in anger. He refused to let Ganondorf's plans come to fruition. Hyrule would not meet the same fate as his island.

"I won't let you get away with this!" Sora said in a courageous tone. He ran straight for him, holding the Keyblade with both hands.

"Sora!" Luigi said.

Ganondorf stood still as Sora leaped at him. The king summoned his giant sword to catch the Keyblade. Sora tried pushing downward, but Ganondorf was far too powerful. Unleashing a burst of dark energy from his body, Ganondorf knocked Sora onto the ground. Luigi and Yoshi hurried over to check on him.

"Your feeble little key is no match for me," Ganondorf said.

Despite feeling the full force of the attack, Sora managed to stand up, albeit struggling to retain his balance. It was like a buffalo rammed into him. But his inner strength refused to shatter. He gripped the Keyblade's hilt with both hands again, preparing for another assault.

Sora noticed Luigi and Yoshi were concerned. "I'm fine. Cloud hits harder."

"Well, it seems you're just as rash as the Hero of Time," Ganondorf said, somewhat impressed. "Must commend you for such stupidity. But I'm no fool. Facing all four of you here will put me at a disadvantage."

He snapped his finger, and Zelda ascended into the ceiling, where she vanished from reality.

"You're going to pay for everything!" Link said, beyond livid.

Ganondorf chuckled. "If you wish to rescue your fair princess, come to my castle. You'd be wise to join him – Sora, is it? – if you ever wish to see your precious Star Spirit again."

"Oh, we'll be there!" Sora said, finding his strength again. "You're going to wish we weren't!"

Wordless, Ganondorf created a dark portal and escaped through it. Link lowered his head in silent fury. He had caused so much agony in his life. But, then, that fury dissolved into a depressing realization – he was the source of the agony. And he brought it upon everyone in Hyrule. One simple decision he made led to everlasting suffering.

The temple grew dark around him. A jagged blade of sorrow had pierced through the unbreakable amor of his resolve.

"We gotta go after him!" Sora said in an urgent tone. "Come on, Link!" No response. "Link?"

Navi flew over to him. He continued staring at the ground, despondent. "What's wrong?"

"It's all my fault," Link said in a crestfallen tone.

"So he kidnapped a princess," Luigi said. "Big deal. That happens to us all the time. It's like a trip to the store."

Link faced them. He carried the same fumes of sorrow in his eyes that plagued Zelda. "There's more to it than that. Zelda and I…we're the reason the world is like this."

"Don't say that," Navi said in a kind voice. "You were only children then."

"But it was still a mistake that brought a great terror upon this once peaceful home – my home."

"What happened?" Sora asked.

Link sighed as he began his painful recount of the past. "Ganondorf's intentions were always malicious. Even as children, we knew he was up to something."

"No offense," Luigi said, "but a name like Ganondorf doesn't exactly give you warm fuzzy feelings."

"I know," Link said. "Unfortunately, no else had our mindset. Only the two us knew he was going to try and claim the land of Hyrule. Our idea was to use the Master Sword to stop him. So I opened the temple's door - the gateway to the sacred realm. But Ganondorf knew of our plans. Once I was placed in suspended animation, he made his move."

Everything made sense now. It must be horrible to drag a heavy burden through life. No matter where you go, it'd always be close behind, reminding you of failure. That's how Sora felt when he lost his island. It was devastating. Sometimes it was like being pinned to the ground, forced to surrender, and live with those feelings forever.

"Gee, I'm sorry," Sora said.

"No need to be," Link said. "We must learn to accept and live with our mistakes."

For a moment, the temple was silent. Link's remorse circulated through the air, making them feel sorry for him. Yoshi let out a sympathetic whimper.

Then, Link took a hot iron and restored that determined armor. "But I can at least lessen the regret by making things right! I'm going to finish Ganondorf off once and for all!"

"Alright," Sora said in excitement. Link's renewed spirited lifted theirs, too. "You can count on us to help!"

Link was startled by Sora's words. "Are you sure? You've seen what Ganondorf can do."

"Oh, we know," Luigi said in a nervous tone. "Wish I didn't."

"Look, if we work together, we can easily take him," Sora said in an optimistic tone. "We'll rescue our friends in no time! Besides, you're our friend, too – I'd lose sleep over knowing I couldn't do anything to help ya."

"Really?" Link asked. "We hardly know each other, and you already consider me a friend?"

"Sometimes friendships click right away," Navi said. "Remember when we first met? Only a few hours together and we started forming a bond. I was watching the way you four fought those creatures. Your teamwork came naturally. Perhaps this was meant to be."

Sora held out his hand. "Whatdaya say? Let's go kick Ganon'dork's' butt."

Link was taken aback; he had never met such likeminded individuals that were willing to fight with him. Growing up, he never had many friends. He was shy and reclusive. Only one befriended him: a girl named Saria (who turned out to be one of the sages). But it wasn't until later that he met Navi, and formed a close bond with her.

Throughout his adventure, Link met many incredible people: some friends, some foes. But none had the same spirit as Sora and his friends; they were willing to fight alongside him despite the danger. Loyalty was a true test of friendship, and they passed with ease. He could already see the sun shining on the kingdom of Hyrule once again.

Link shook Sora's hand. "Yeah. He won't know what him. Thanks, everyone!"

An alliance between the Hero of Time and the Hero of the Keyblade had been forged.

Ganondorf's castle stood proud before Sora and his friends. In the darkness, it appeared as a floating monstrosity with sharp spikes, mouth hung open, prepared to devour the four intruders. But they wouldn't let their courage wane before its hulking size. For they knew there was a brittle heart within its hard shell, filled with nothing but negative emotions – contempt for the entire world. It was impossible for someone with such a miserable mindset to stand up to their comradery.

They were prepared to enter the castle, but soon noticed an impediment brought their crusade to a standstill.

"Oh, right," Sora said in disappointment. "I forgot there's no bridge."

"Maybe Link have something we can use to get in," Yoshi said.

"Well, I have a hookshot," Link said. "That could work."

Luigi turned to Navi with an inquisitive expression. "Where does he keep all of those wonderful little toys, anyway?"

"Good question," Navi said, in thought. "I keep forgetting to ask him."

Their conversation was interrupted by a kind, yet strong male voice. "Link, can you and your companions hear me?"

"What!?" Luigi asked, panicked, darting his head left and right. "Who said that!?"

Link's face brightened upon recognizing the voice. "Rauru!"

"Gesundheit!" Yoshi said.

"No, Yoshi. That's his name," Link said. "He's one of the sages." He looked up at the sky. "Yes, we can! It's good to hear your voice!"

"You as well, Link," Rauru said. "The other sages and I are here to assist in your strife against the dark king. We will gather our power to create a bridge to the castle. In order to access the castle's keep, however, you will need to destroy six evil barriers – they keep his throne room protected."

Link nodded. "Understood!"

A spectrum of colored orbs rained down from the heavens and converged into a transparent, arched bridge that led to the castle. The beams on both sides had a complex design of five spheres pointing towards the sky. It displayed every color of the rainbow. A fragment of light managed to find an aperture within the coat of darkness.

Everyone approached the bridge with caution. While the design was exquisite, its translucent appearance made Sora feel uncomfortable. He could see the lava spiraling below his feet, as if waiting to devour him like a Venus flytrap.

"Think it's safe?" Sora asked, with a hit of uneasiness.

"It has to be." Link placed a friendly hand on Sora's shoulder. "Why don't you go first?"

Sora turned to Link, startled. "Hey! I thought being the Hero of Time means putting yourself before others!?"

"I'm still Hylian, after all," Link said, feigning innocents, chuckling. "I can deal with dungeons filled with spinning blades, floating hands that pull you underground, and giant bats that catch on fire. But a transparent bridge over lava? I take caution there. After you."

"No, no," Sora said, gesturing his hand towards the bridge. "I insist."

"Please, don't be so modest."

Exasperated from this frivolous dispute, Luigi stormed over and pushed them both onto the bridge. Sure enough, it was solid.

"Mama-mia!" Luigi said, annoyed. "Just get on there! I've been driving across rainbows since I was in diapers! How am I the fearless one here!?" He and Yoshi both crossed the bridge, leaving the others behind in silence. They were a bit embarrassed for being worried over naught.

"Drives across rainbows?" Link asked Sora in confusion.

"Don't think about it too hard," Sora said.

They entered the castle, where they would trudge through an endless stream of unadulterated malice.

The main floor of the castle was somber. Not a soul wandered throughout the dimly lit area. Scattered throughout it were platforms connected by stairs; they were elevated at various heights. Also present were small doors. Some were located on the platforms; others were on ground level. Ahead of them was the tower's entrance. It was protected by a purple silo of energy.

Sora shuddered, hugging himself from the unsettling architecture. "Man, this place gives me the chills."

"We can't be intimidated," Link said in a firm tone. "If we're to defeat him, we must stay focused."

Navi flew over to examine the force field. "This must be the barrier Rauru prevised us about. I can't mistake the putrid sense of darkness."

Her eyes followed six beams of energy connected to the force field. Each one was a different color, and were connected to a triangular object that was akin to a satellite. Navi focused everyone's attention to them. Link noticed a door located below each energy beam.

"Presumably, the six barriers must be through each door," he said.

"Then it shouldn't be too hard," Luigi said, although a pinch of worry rustled his vocal cords. "I mean, they're regular rooms, right? One must be a kitchen, while the other is a guest room."

Yoshi rose an eager hand. "Ooh, me call kitchen!"

"No," Link said with a grim expression on his face. "Ganondorf wouldn't design his castle to be so mundane. He probably anticipated my arrival. We should stick together. Who knows what kind of traps he has fashioned for us."

"Aw, Link being silly," Yoshi said, waving a dismissive hand. "It can't be that bad."

The first room was mundane: a few barrels were scattered throughout it; torches were lit to give the dark room some illumination; there were bottomless pits below them; hovering platforms that required precise jumping to land; and giant axes swinging between the platforms to increase the danger.

So, nothing out of the ordinary.

Link cracked his knuckles, knowing the next hour or two was going to be traversing a perilous Rubik's Cube. Sora and Luigi's jaws dropped in shock (even Luigi, who had traverse precarious platforms in the past, thought this was a bit excessive). They then both glowered at Yoshi

The dinosaur turned away from them, placed both hands on his hips, and said, "Yoshi, you need to learn to keep that adorable mouth of yours shut."

Despite how overwhelming the obstacle was, they wouldn't retreat. So many people were depending on their success: Link, Zelda, the people of Hyrule, and the Star Spirit. Breaking a promise would be a crime against their own morals. After taking a moment to let the weight of their predicament settle in, the group began this massive undertaking.

The first challenge wasn't too hard. They just waited for the giant axes to swing by before jumping onto the next platform; although Luigi could feel the sudden burst of air as it flew by him. He held onto his moustache for dear life, fearful that it'd be cut clean off him. There was one point where Sora lost his balance, but Link helped him before he could plummet into the endless abyss.

They arrived in the next room, which, thankfully, was small, and had ground (given what Sora had just been through, he was ready to drop on all fours and give the ground it a big wet kiss. He could care less about germs).

Ahead of them was a floating orange orb trapped in a green force field. It pulsated at a slow, steady rate, like a relaxed heart, feeling safe from the toils of everyday life. They assumed that this was what provided the barrier its power. Destroy the heart, and the blood will cease its traversal, bringing an end to the body.

Before they could ponder their next move, a young female voice called out to them. "Link. Use the enhanced arrows Zelda bestowed upon you. That'll destroy it. Hurry!"

Link knew that voice. For a second, his mind strolled into the past, to see the familiar precious smile worn by Saria – his first true friend. As a kid, he found himself trapped within a lonely dome. None of the other kids gravitated towards him. He didn't even have his own fairy companion. Link was an outsider to them.

But Saria opened a hatch in the dome, entered it, and sat beside him. A true friend can look past the hazy exterior and can see the magnificence of a person – loving, complex, and cordial. Despite being separated by time, she would always peek within that dome to find him. But reminiscing was immaterial if they no longer existed to experience those pleasant feelings.

Link fired a light arrow into the orb; it expanded and then exploded into tiny specs of orange glitter. The room flashed before their eyes. They felt like an invisible fishing hook reeled them out of the room. When the blinding light faded, they found themselves back in the main room. The green beam vanished, weakening the force field's power.

Their first mission was a success. But Luigi was soon filled with dread; they had to navigate five more rooms. Any moment he was going to turn the emotional faucet on and start crying.

The group found themselves in an underwater labyrinth. On the surface was a large crystal that changed the water levels. Next to the switch was a door imprisoned by metal bars (with no keyhole, preventing Sora using the less than tedious method). So they needed to unlock it; and, unfortunately, the switch was deep within the jumbled pathways.

Because of Yoshi's aquaphobia, he managed the switch while the others dove into the unknown catacombs. At times, they found themselves lost due the various tunnels. Their heads spun in confusion; any second a disoriented match would ignite a migraine.

Through trial and error, they located a lever, pulled on it, and returned to the surface.

Yoshi hissed at them. "Away, wet ones!"

"Cut it out!" Luigi said, aggravated.

To their dismay, the door was still closed.

"Wh-Why didn't it work?" Sora asked, as his shoulders slump. "I was sure we hit the right lever.

Link evaluated their progress through the confusing maze. A startling thought crossed his mind. "Wait! I think I remember seeing a hole in the second room, on the upper level!"

"Why won't this end!?" Luigi asked, grabbing his head in anguish. He then sighed, realizing they couldn't escape their fate. "Lower the levels again, Yoshi."

After what felt like forever, they swam upon another switch; this one opened the door. The group sighed in relief; Sora thought he saw grays on Luigi's moustache. He didn't even want to see how wrinkled his fingers looked from the water. One thing was certain: he would never enjoy running through a hedge maze again.

Sora hugged himself as an omnipresent cold nuzzled against his skin. They were now in an ice cavern. Was this Ganondorf's next test? To see how long it took for them to develop frostbite?

"Ugh, sometimes being an islander stinks," Sora said, shivering.

"Yo-You at least have clothes to wear," Yoshi said; the sound of his chattering teeth echoed throughout the cave.

They walked as a brisk pace through the cavern, hoping an exit would lead them to a toasty warm salvation. During their journey, they came across a sheet of ice, and had to take slow, meticulous steps. But Yoshi was impatient; he started walking faster, and ended up crashing into Sora. The two slid across the ground until coming to a complete stop.

"One of Ganondorf's traps got us!" Yoshi said, frightened.

Sora sat up and shook his head. "Nope. That was all you, dude."

Before Luigi could help them, he heard squeaking noises overhead. He saw two bats flying towards him. What's peculiar was their wings were doused in a light blue mist. Luigi swung at them, forcing the creatures to retreat. But they circled around, preparing for another attempt.

"Don't let them touch you!" Link said as he loaded a fire arrow. "You'll turn into a frozen block of ice!" He fired both arrows into bats; they disintegrated into ash that clashed with the blinding blue cavern.

As Luigi exhaled in relief, Sora managed to rise to his feet. "That was close. You were almost Italian Ice there." He noticed Luigi's eye twitching, as if prepared to punch him in the face. "Oh, come on! That one was clever!"

"About as clever as the design of that last room," Luigi said in a sarcastic tone.

"You know, words can hurt," Sora said in a timid, upset tone.

"Well, you know what hurts more?" Luigi said, glancing at the ceiling. "Those icicles dangling above our heads."

Sora looked up to notice them, and then responded with a sheepish grin. "Erm, good point. Let's keep moving."

While Sora and Luigi helped Yoshi up, Link and Navi stared at them, completely mystified by their odd conversations.

"I'm almost afraid to ask what village they reside from," Navi said.

"Navi!" Link said with scorn. "Sure, they're a little eccentric, but, I'm grateful for their assistance. With our numbers, we'll have no trouble ridding this kingdom of Ganondorf. We must stop him. I refuse to let the suffering continue."

Navi nodded in agreement. Hanging from Link irises was a lantern of guilt; the flame inside was small and meek. He still blamed himself for allowing Ganondorf to obtain the Triforce piece. She couldn't let that negativity continue to damper his heroic spirit. Like Link said, Navi had been a huge wealth of support, and she would continue distributing it.

"We will!" Navi said in an encouraging tone. "And rescue Zelda! I have your back!"

Link smiled at her. He couldn't have asked for a better companion.

The sounds of molten lava bubbled in the group's ears. From one extreme to another, they found themselves in a hot cavern filled with magma. Sora tugged on his collar to produce even a smidgen of cool air; Luigi fanned himself with his hat; and Yoshi hung out his tongue. Strains of hot sweat poured down Link's forehead; he wiped it, fighting through the wretched heat. Only his willpower remained undeterred.

They soon came to a wooden bridge. That was over lava. At this point, Ganondorf was just pulling a sadistic prank on them. Still, they continued onward, crossing the bridge with careful steps. In the center of the bridge was a hole. A tower of lava rose above them. After it descended, the four leaped across the hole and hurried towards the other side

But an impediment was waiting for them, rubbing its hands in sinister glee. At the end of the bridge were two bats doused in orange flames. They flew over to the ropes that supported the bridge and landed on top of them. Already the flames started eating away at the ropes like a famished animal.

Luigi stopped in his tracks, unable to believe their constant misfortune. His frustrations exploded like a volcano, and he shouted at the sky, "GANONDORF!"

The left rope broke, and the bridge fell sideways. Everyone grabbed onto the edge of the deck. They were dangling over the lava; it seemed to be bubbling faster, as if excited to give them a scorching hot bath. Sora turned to see the other rope was close to snapping. Taking the Keyblade, he used an ice spell to dispose of the bats.

The group made their way across the bridge, being conscious of their hand movements as they continued dangling over the lava. Sora hated to say it, but he was pining to bash a Heartless over the head right now.

In the next room, they were chased by a giant boulder.

Sora shouted, "WHY'D IT HAVE TO BE BOULDERS!?"

One more room, they thought. One more room and the insanity would become nothing more than a memory. An unpleasant one, sure, but memories can't jump out and assault you. They stood before the door, on edge, preparing for a rude gesture from their final challenge.

"Last one," Link said as he grabbed the doorknob. "We can do this."

"Glad it's almost over," Luigi said with a huge sigh. "Was wondering when this nightmare would end."

Upon entering the room, they stared in bewildering silence at what lay before them. Nothing. There was no floor whatsoever. A few stranger creatures, however, walked on the air as of there was an invisible floor. Luigi lost all feeling in his body. He couldn't believe his retinas constructed this image. His breaking point had ascended beyond a thermometer of tolerance.

"Keep enjoying this dream, boys!" Luigi said, and he hurried for the door, only to be restrained by the others.

"Oh, no!" Sora said. "All for one, remember!?"

"Let me go! Let me go!" Luigi said, hysterical. "I want to speak with this castle's contractor!"

Ten minutes later…

Link watched in satisfaction as the force field vanished. "Yes! We're getting closer! Let's keep moving!"

He turned to see that the others did not share his enthusiasm. Sora was laying on his stomach, letting stress disperse into the ground like cockroaches. He looked over his shoulder to see both Luigi and Yoshi stumbling towards him, exhausted, prepared to collapse.

"Fine," Sora said in a week, defeated tone. "Land on my back."

The two did so. Link approached the trio with a mixture of concern and guilt. "Guess you three don't have the experience with dungeons like I do."

"I'll say." Navi smirked. "I think you're almost starting to like them."

Link chuckled. "In a weird way, I guess. But let's give them a moment to rest."

He turned towards the tower, with his resolve securely fastened. But various emotions meandered throughout his body. His chest tightened from contradicting feelings: delight, apprehension, anger, just to name a few. But his mind walked into a tranquil cocoon, channeling out the excessive noise. There was only one single minded thought spinning through that cocoon:

Slay Ganondorf.
