A/N: By the time you read this, you'll know that it's been a day since Sora has been announced for Smash. I really have no words to describe the deluge of emotions I'm feeling right now. I wrote the original Nintendo version because it was something I've dreamed of - a reality that I'd never be able to traverse. I love Disney, but Nintendo is my childhood; it defies who I am today. Both it and KH have been a part of life. And they still are today. To me, they were the perfect fit for this kind of story. Because I knew I'd never see anything like that in real life. Until today. We've come full circle, huh? It seemed impossible - that our voices would not make a difference, and be left to erode into eternal silence. But, just like the ideals of Kingdom Hearts, that light never went out, and we were rewarded for our efforts and patience.
Dreams can come true.
Enjoy the chapter.
Chapter 35: Best Friends Forever
Riku arrived at the edge of the island, staring out at the vast ocean in front of him (he carried Digby on his shoulder). Sand sliped into his shoes; they tickled his toes. The waves crashed against the rocks; he inhaled the salt air. It was like reuniting with a security blanket; those feelings of nostalgia snuggled against his chest. He saw himself back on his island, sitting with Sora and Kairi, staring at the horizon. Life seemed innocent.
At moments, he wanted to step into that image, and never leave. But not even a vestige of the past remained. It only lives on in our memories. He continued embracing the familiar surroundings. His anger, for a moment, spread out into the sand. He was focused on that image; maybe he could salvage it. Deep down, he knew Sora's feeling for Kairi were as vast as the ocean. He shared those sentiments.
Perhaps, that perfect image could be replicated.
The image of Isabelle started to flicker. Digby refused to let it vanish. Finding a fragment of strength, he bit Riku's shoulder. The boy flinched and dropped Digby on the ground, who tried crawling across the sand. But his body refused to cooperate; he found it difficult to move.
"Why do you not succumb already?" Riku asked, growing impatient.
He went to grab Digby, but noticed a giant egg flying for him. Riku leaped backwards, allowing the egg to break on the ground. Looking up, he saw Sora and his friends approaching him. Riku gritted his teeth; they were making things unnecessarily difficult.
Riku noticed Yoshi bouncing another egg in his hand. "For an annoying runt, you sure got a good arm."
"Me have a name you know," Yoshi said with disdain, snorting. "And me gonna use these eggs to spell it out for you."
"Let him go already," Sora said. "He's been through enough!"
"Please," Isabelle said. "I don't want anyone to get hurt.
"No one has to," Riku said. They were surprised by his relaxed demeanor. "You need to understand how important this is to me. I was hoping you'd understand above all, Sora."
"What do you mean?" Sora asked.
Riku glanced at the barely conscience Digby. "With a heart as strong as his, Fido here might be able to help Kairi." He noticed a dispirited look on Sora's face. "It's nothing we can't fix. You and I have always been there for her. Now's our time to do it again. Let's join forces to save her. We can do it, together."
Sora was startled by Riku's change in mood. Why was he willing to put everything that happen aside? Was it because they interests conflated into one singular goal? Saving Kairi? This might be the start to healing their relationship.
Or it would've been, if not for Riku taking one fatal blunder. Sora glanced at Digby, struggling to keep himself from collapsing in the sand. With a courageous spark, Sora summoned the Keyblade, preparing to face his former best friend.
"What?" Riku asked, baffled. "You'd rather fight me over this nobody? He's been a roadblock in your journey. Why do you care for his well-being?"
"Because at least he still has a conscience," Sora said
Riku raised an eyebrow. "Are you joking? Does he also have no strings to hold him down?"
"I'm serious," Sora said, snapping. "Sure, he made a few mistakes, but you know what? He actually listened to his conscience, and realized what he did was wrong! And right now, MINE is telling me that you're on the wrong side!"
Riku stared at Sora with silent fury. His unwillingness to help Kairi was the last straw. He had betrayed their friendship. It was painful to accept the notion. He thought they were like brothers, always supportive of each other. But it was a lie. He swallowed the sharp feelings that stagnated in his throat. Though they struggled to reach the bottom.
"Then you leave me no choice," Riku said, preparing his blade.
A strain of sweat glided down Sora's cheek. In the old days, they sparred for fun. Sure, he never won, but every moment was exhilarating. Now, he had to fight Riku for real – blades would be exchanged; cuts would form; and there would be no satisfaction. Luigi and Yoshi stood by Sora's side, although they were a bit nervous. Sora had never beaten Riku before, so this battle wasn't going to be easy.
But, today, they planned to end Riku's winning streak
While Riku was distracted, Isabelle ran over to Digby, and held him in her arms. He was motionless. His eyes were closed.
"Bro! Bro, wake up!" Isabelle said, shaking him in desperation.
No answer. Only the crashing waves responded with a sense of remorse. She continued shaking him. He didn't budge. Isabelle's breathing became rapid; she tried against. Nothing. Tears started to form in her eyes. He was lost to the darkness.
Her second chance had been purloined by the cruel outcome of reality.
"It's all my fault!" Isabelle said, starting to cry. "Had I not saved you, none of this would have happened! Please! Don't go! I'm sorry!"
She cried right into his chest, unleashing a heavy downpour of grief.
His senses were numb. All he saw was pure blackness. His entire existence was fading. He was about to become a resident of nothingness – an inescapable prison he was forced to call home. His mind began to fade; every memory started getting purged from the photo album. But one picture was stapled – his sister. He refused to lose it.
His hearing started to return. He heard a muffled, rhythmic sound – it was crying. He listened harder; it was Isabelle. She was suffering. He would not let that happen. Feeling started to return. He swam against the darkness, avoiding the tendrils that reached for him. Light broke through the cracks. Isabelle's voice became clearer. He swam faster.
Isabelle was a mess – her pleasant demeanor had been shattered into pieces of miserable glass. She continued crying in his chest, feeling the tremendous weight of sorrow pin her to the ground. And she would never be able overcome it. Never. Her spirit would forever be face first in the earth.
But then, she was startled as a comforting paw stroke her shoulder blade. Isabelle leaned back to see Digby giving her a weak smile. She wiped the tears from both eyes, believing they created a wishful illusion. But it was real. His smile didn't falter. The uncertain haze that once filled his eyes had vanished; they glistened in the sunlight.
"So, sis," Digby said, nonchalant, "we still on for the LOL Café?"
Isabelle couldn't help but chuckle at the joke. Her emotions ruptured into a torrent of uncontrollable joy. She gave him the biggest hug imaginable, crying uncontrollably. Her body trembled from the overwhelming feelings. Isabelle never wanted to let go; she was afraid he'd leave again. Digby returned the hug, reassuring her that it won't happen.
Sora and his friends noticed the tearful reunion; they were happy for her. Riku stared at them in disbelief. Digby was stronger than he thought. He fought through the darkness to be there for his sister. Riku couldn't help but admire his willpower. It would be wrong to interrupt this joyous occasion.
After all, he wanted to experience the same feeling of elation upon reuniting with Kairi. He wouldn't like it if someone tried to separate them. Still, Riku was disappointed; he was no closer to waking Kairi from her endless slumber.
A dark portal appeared in front of the group, on the ground. Two tentacles emerged and pulled themselves upward to reveal the caged Heartless they fought earlier. The creature snapped its vicious jaws at the group. Sora didn't know whether to be relieved by the sudden intrusion or not. He was still skeptical about fighting Riku. The idea of harming his lifelong friend left a putrid taste in his mouth.
"Big mouth back!" Yoshi said.
Riku, while obstructed behind the creature, created a portal, and escaped.
"Riku!" Sora said, trying to look behind the Heartless to see if his friend was still there.
"Forget him!" Luigi said, frantic. "This guy's our target now!"
Sora, while reluctant, agreed. Talking was pointless when a monster of unknown origin tried to devour you with giant teeth.
Isabelle helped Digby up, and had him lean on her shoulder. She looked at the others, concerned. "Be careful!"
"There's no need to worry," Digby said. "Sora and his friends can easily take this thing down. They're something else."
Isabelle smiled. "Yep. You're right. They really are."
Isabelle hurried towards the jungle with her brother, so that they were a safe distance from the fight; then, they made their way back at a slow pace towards the resort. The Heartless slammed its tentacles into the ground, unleashing a powerful tidal wave of sand. Everyone braced themselves as they were bombarded by harsh grains.
While the three were distracted, the Heartless knocked them onto the ground with its tentacles. Then, the creature leaped into the air, preparing to slam its body on them. Fortunately, the group scattered like frightened insects, but they felt the full force of the shockwave as it landed. Sora received a face full of sand; he sat up, spun around, and brushed it off in hurry.
He looked up to see the creature bringing its tentacle straight for his legs. Sora split them open to avoid the strike. The Heartless retracted the tentacle immediately, and then tried thrusting it into Sora's chest. The boy brought his blade up to block the attack. Luigi struck at its back with his hammer. Furious, the creature spun around and swept Luigi off his feet.
The smaller head opened its mouth, charging a ball of dark energy. Luigi braced himself for attack. Yoshi hurried over, catching the ball with his shield at the last second. An explosion occurred, sending the two flying a good distance. After landing, the two sat up, dazed and sore, but otherwise, fine.
"Heartless a lot tougher this time," Yoshi said.
"Well, we did force it to spit out its lunch," Luigi said. "Probably cranky."
Yoshi turned to him in confusion. "You can tell?"
"Sure," Luigi said. He grinned. "Same thing happens to you."
Yoshi blushed. "That not true! Lies!"
"Look out!" Sora said in a loud, urgent voice.
The two looked to see the Heartless preparing to land on top of them. They both rolled away from each other, and narrowly avoided getting crushed like dough. The Heartless thrusted a tentacle at Yoshi, who deflected it with his shield. Then, the tentacle prepared to slam itself straight down on the dinosaur; he curled into an egg and rolled backwards.
As the Heartless prepared to crush Luigi with the other tentacle, he cast a Thunder spell to paralyze it. Luigi swung his hammer into the creature's side, dealing minor damage. As the Heartless stumbled sideways, it felt a sharp, piercing strike from behind courtesy of Sora's Keyblade. The creature spun around and swung its tentacle at him.
Sora blocked it with the Keyblade, but the force from the attack pushed him backwards. The Heartless opened its massive jaw, and unleashed a giant ball of energy. Sora was able to sidestep the blast with no issue. Moments later, he heard an explosion, and looked over his shoulder to see that it produced miniature energy balls – all which chased him like angry bees.
"Oh, come on!" Sora said, annoyed. He ran away, dodging each ball. First, he side-stepped to the left, then right. They were endless. He needed to take care of them all at once.
Ahead of him were two boulders: a small one in front, and a bigger one behind it. This gave him an idea. He prepared his spiral attack, leaped onto the small one, and then to the big one. He waited for the energy balls to close in on him. When the time came, he performed a backflip over the balls, landed on the small rock, and launched his attack, destroying every single one.
Meanwhile, Luigi hopped over one tentacle, then caught the next with his hammer. Before he could go on the offense, the one Luigi hopped over smacked him in the back of the neck; he fell onto the ground. The tentacle wrapped itself around Luigi's leg, and then threw him into Yoshi, sending the duo rolling across the sand.
The creature opened its caged mouth, preparing to spew another large energy ball. Sora noticed them in trouble, hurried over, and caught the ball before it could hit them. He struggled against its weight; the familiar chill brushed across his face. How he hated the feeling of darkness – it was a reminder that the Heartless lurked around every corner, preparing to feed off his heart.
And his friends as well. The Heartless had been the source of his frustrations. He lived a normal life: he grew up, went to school, and made incredible friends. And now, he watched as these monsters swooped out from the shadows like a hawk, carrying his friends away into the abyss, where they would suffer. He despised them. They took his island, along with the two remaining pieces he cherished.
Anger. Rage. It built inside of him. His heart started pounding faster, like a motor engine that lost control. Adrenaline rushed through his veins like a rapid stream. Channeling this sudden surge in strength, he deflected the attack. But his anger didn't quell.
Riku's voice hissed in his ears, telling him that he could never save Kairi. Or how he didn't care about them anymore. He had never felt so livid in his life. It was frightening, and yet, felt justifiable. Betrayed by his best friend – his brother. He remembered their childhood: how they played together, shared their dreams with each other, and promised to always be together forever.
But Riku broke that promise. To make matters worse, Kairi lost her heart. And it may never return to her. He wanted to tell her the truth – how much he cared for her. Now, he might not get that chance.
Right now, Sora needed an outlet for his rage, and the perfect candidate stood in front of him. The Heartless prepared another attack; Sora cast a Gravity spell, forcing it towards the ground. The boy ran over to the Heartless and began his relentless assault. It could not defend itself from Sora's fierce strikes.
Luigi and Yoshi watched in stunned silence as Sora refused to show any mercy; his good nature had been contorted into a grotesque beast filled with animosity. The Heartless screeched in pain from each blow; the blade pierced through its skin like a hot knife through butter. Finally, Sora used his spiral blast to finish off the creature.
It was numb from the unbearable pain. The Heartless lost the will to exist. It collapsed onto the sand, vanishing from sight. Sora took long, hard breathes that muffled out the sounds of the crashing waves. His chest burned from overexertion. Sweat poured from his forehead. Luigi and Yoshi carefully approached their friend, unsure of how to respond. Or how they could help him.
They felt the unwavering heat of his rage. It was hard not to blame him. Anyone would be furious if their own friend betrayed them – someone you trusted your whole life. Sora heard his friends approach him, and held out his arm, indicating he needed a moment to be alone. The two complied in silence.
Sora listened to the familiar sounds of the beach: the seagulls screeching, the tide gently moving out to sea – it was comforting, like a soothing lullaby. The tension left his body, as if being pulled away by the tide. However, a new emotion ended up on shore: sadness. It filled his entire body, drowning out his usual chipper mood.
A sudden flash of light appeared out of his peripheral vision, and he noticed a keyhole had appeared on a boulder. Wordless, he sealed it shut with his Keyblade.
"Got a headache," Sora said after, rubbing his forehead.
Luigi walked over and placed a sympathetic arm around him. "That's the stress talking. Let's head back. We could all use a rest."
Sora looked over his shoulder one last time, hopeful that Riku was still around. Maybe he changed his mind, and wished to make amends. No such luck. He made his decision; often, they can never be undone. It only made Sora feel worse. He remained silent, trying to process everything as Luigi led him into the jungle.
Yoshi stood behind for a moment, plagued with guilt. He had never seen Sora in such a woeful state. This was the person who parted the clouds with an unwavering smile; nothing ever seemed to break his spirit. Until now. He glanced back at the spot Riku once stood.
Why did this happen? Because Riku was jealous? Jealousy is a petty emotion. Or, maybe, there was more to it – an underlying growth that became more disfigured as those feelings lingered. It was upsetting to ponder. But Yoshi put it aside. Right now, he had to be there for Sora. He refused to let his friend wane into a shriveled mess of despondency.
Riku and Bowser stood in the bedroom of an old medieval fortress. The walls were made from stone; a queen-sized bed with white blankets stood in the middle. To each side of the bed was a nightstand; they both contained a bright burning candle. The room seemed unkempt, as if it hadn't been tended to in years. Dust gathered on the floor, books were disorganized on the shelves, and the wooden furniture appeared faded.
Still, it would serve as a nice resting place for Kairi. If one could even say she was 'resting.' She lay on the bed; her pale skin blended in with the white sheets. Riku hated seeing her in such a comatose state. And, yet, he kept watching her, expecting to see those vibrant blues open any second.
Nothing happened. Wishful thinking.
"So, Kairi's like a lifeless puppet now?" Riku asked, plaintive.
Even Bowser took pity on the boy. "Sorry, kiddo. Looks that way."
"And her heart was…." There was a slight tremble in his voice.
"Taken by the Heartless, I'd assume," Bowser said. "Those guys sure know how to eat."
Riku spun around, wearing a shade of desperation over his eyes. "Tell me! What can I do?"
"You know that princess you brought us earlier? She's one of seven maidens of the purest heart. We call them the Princesses of Heart. Legend says that when they're all together, a door to the heart of all worlds will open. Within lies untold wisdom the likes of which none of us can understand."
Riku digested every sentence for the moment. It filled him with some hope. "So, if I gather these princesses to open the door, do you think I can save her?"
"I'm sure of it," Bowser said with his wide, wicked smile. "No sane person would wanna pass something like this up."
"Alright," Riku said, without hesitation. "Count me in."
Bowser smirked. ""Gotta give ya credit, kid. You're way stronger than that mutt. The darkness doesn't mess with you like it did him."
"It's nothing," Riku said with a modest shrug. "Can't see why everyone fears it. I'm not. And I'll use it if I have to."
"Even against that goody two-shoes friend of yours?"
Riku paused to let that question seep into his skull. Memories of their childhood tried to present a counterpoint. But he refused to let it present a case. Wasn't needed. Life changes. Everything was in the past now. They chose separate path; he refused to let them intertwine again.
With a clear objective, Riku nodded.
Bowser laughed. "You're somethin' else I tell ya. I'm not upset that you lost him. How can I be? You're more valuable than that dog will ever be. Because of that, I'm going to be generous and give you something really cool."
Riku raised a curious eyebrow.
"I know!" Bowser said. "I can't believe it either! Generosity ain't my bag, but I'm in a good mood. Here!"
The Koopa King outstretched his arms. Riku was enveloped in a green mist. For a second, he was startled. But then, it felt warm. It reminded him of the sun's rays hitting his chest. He relaxed, as if falling into a comfortable chair. This new power belonged to him; it flowed through his veins.
"Congrats, kid," Bowser said. "You can control the Heartless now."
Any other person would feel the burden of commanding these dangerous creatures. But not him. The darkness wasn't a threat; it was an extension of himself. He had a deep understanding of its omnipresent energy. With the Heartless under his control, he would scour every world until he located Kairi's heart. No one would stop him.
Not even Sora.
"Soon, Kairi," Riku said, reinvigorated. "Soon."
After returning to the resort, Digby was treated for any wounds, wrapped in bandages, and instructed to lay in bed (orders of a sister). And he didn't mind. He fell asleep upon hitting the mattress. There was no need to worry anymore. He was safe. Later, he awoke to see the light turned on over his head. He was groggy, but tried sitting up, only to be stopped by a yellow paw. Digby turned to see his sister with a concerned look on her face.
"Easy," Isabelle said in a gentle tone. "Don't want to hurt yourself even more."
"You don't need to watch me," Digby said. "I'll be fine."
With a bright smile, she said, "No. 'Fraid that's not happening."
"Don't know why I said that, then," Digby said with a chuckle. But his mood changed as a reel of unpleasant images hovered across his mind. He glanced at his paws, as if they've been riddled with regret.
"What's wrong?" Isabelle asked.
Digby sighed, struggling to find the appropriate words. Each one that passed through his tongue was sour. "I did horrible things. Took unexpected people away from their homes, and tried to hurt you and your friends. I was so desperate. But that doesn't excuse anything. How are you able to forgive me after all that?"
"Because I knew, deep down, you'd find your way back," Isabelle said. "You're too good of a dog."
Digby squeezed his blanket. "This is a burden I can never get rid of. How can I even go on after this?"
"You have to," Isabelle said, supportive. "That's just the way life works. It's all a matter of figuring out how to move on from it."
Digby had one foot stuck in a chasm of skepticism. Moving on seemed next to impossible. It was like facing a pyramid built from your misdeeds; it stood tall in your path, and was even harder to navigate through. Every passage contained a painful memory.
"I guess so," Digby said, uncertain.
His sorrow brush against Isabelle's fur. She understood how hard it was to relinquish parts of your past – they would follow like a deformed shadow. "Guilt is something that never truly goes away. Trying to lessen the feeling can be difficult." She gave an encouraging smile. "But it doesn't have to be. Sometimes one person in your life can help you with that."
"Oh, who is that person?" Digby said with a playful grin. "Mr. Resetti? He's definitely the caring type."
Isabelle laughed. "After all this time you still find a way to drive me crazy, bro!" She gave a sincere smile. "I promise. I'll help you mend the wounds in your heart, no matter how long it takes."
Digby was beyond grateful to have an understanding and loving sister. Even during hard times, a light followed that deformed shadow, helping it reform into his image. Words couldn't express his elation.
"Isabelle….you're the best," Digby said, appreciative.
She outstretched her arms. "Awkward sibling hug?"
"Awkward sibling hug," Digby said, mimicking her gesture.
They embraced, patting their backs, saying, "Pat. Pat." The siblings promised to never lose that tradition again.
There was a dreary silence in the lobby. Everyone had gone about their business. Tortimer was reading an autobiography…on himself. Grams and Leila were playing a relaxing game of checkers, channeling out the uncomfortable air around them. Luigi and Yoshi sat on the couch facing the hallway; they would glance at it on occasion, waiting for Sora's return.
After returning to the resort, Sora went to take a nap. Probably because of the headache. Or, maybe, he just wanted to be alone. Sometimes, laying in the darkness can provide comfort. Nothing happened. There was no drama. The emptiness couldn't harm you.
But, once you start reflecting on what transpired, the heartache resumed. Not even the darkness provided sympathy.
Tortimer lowered his book. "Still worried about your friend."
"Yeah," Luigi said, glum. "He's gone on and on about great his friend is. But to see someone you admire so much turn their back on you – that hurts."
Kapp'n walked in, having overheard the conversation. "Aye. Well, the Mrs. almost be done wit' th' tea. Perhaps a clear mind be wha' yer matey needs."
Soon enough, Leilania entered, carrying steaming hot tea on a silver tray. Its vibrant smell lightened up the mood somewhat. After passing them out to everyone, she went over to Sora's room next. She knocked. No answer. Anxious, she opened the door ajar, and gasped in shock.
"Oh, no!" Leilania said. "He's gone!"
Luigi and Yoshi were the first ones to stand up, surprised. "What!?"
They, along with Kapp'n, hurried over to the room. The only occupant was the breeze rushing through an opened window.
"How rude!" Yoshi said, frowning. "At least use the door next time when running away from home."
Luigi rolled his eyes. "Oh brother. Come on, Yoshi. Let's go find him."
As they returned to the lobby, Kapp'n asked if he could help. Luigi refused the offer; he had a feeling that, if Sora needed anyone right now, it would just be them.
"Well, we do offer a search and rescue deal!" Tortimer said in glee. Finally, some action! "One hundred bells! Includes snorkeling." Everyone gave him looks of disdain. "What?"
Once he and Yoshi stepped outside, Luigi said, "Meet back in fifteen if you don't find him."
Yoshi nodded, and the two headed off in separate directions. The dinosaur began his search at the shore. Worried palpitations sputtered in his chest. Was he hurt? Would they even find him? What if he didn't even want to be found? The thoughts only accelerated the palpitations. He'd be distraught over losing such an incredible friend.
He looked up to Sora. When things seemed impossible, Sora would find a way to debunk the very word. He inspired Yoshi to never quit – to never feel oppressed by those that looked down upon you. Sora made him happy. Yoshi could just be himself around the boy. It was hard to explain just how much he admired him.
Right now, he needed to channel Sora's attitude, and not feel discouraged. Before Yoshi began a thorough investigation of the shore, he heard someone sniffling to his right. He turned to see Sora sitting in the sand, looking out towards the sunset, hugging his knees. Yoshi relaxed, although he sensed his despondency, and gave a commiserative whimper.
Sora's tears glistened gold from the sunset; he tried fighting them back, but they refused to concede. Everything had fallen apart for him in one day. He felt hopeless. First Riku disowned him; now, Kairi lost her heart. It was an overwhelming notion to accept. He pined for the past, where life was perfect. He, Riku, Kairi would talk, laugh, and stare out the horizon, appreciating every moment they had together.
Once we step into the present, the past becomes an illusion. No one can ever reclaim it.
Sora felt alone. He had lost everything. It was like sinking to the bottom of the sea. How do you even reach the surface? You have no tools at your disposal. Sora's sadness expanded as he continued pondering his fate. The future seemed unclear. And frightening.
Then, a soft voice extended a hand from the surface. "Sora?"
The boy turned to see Yoshi standing next to him, with a tender glow in his eyes.
"I…I'll never abandon you," Yoshi said. "I promise."
Those words pushed Sora over the edge. He couldn't fight the tears anymore; they poured down his face like a waterfall. He started crying. And never stopped. It had been forever since Sora cried, and he felt awkward to be doing so in front of someone. But he had no control; there was an excessive accumulation of emotional toil, and he needed to drain it through his tears.
Yoshi sat down and pulled him in for a big hug. Sora saw nothing but darkness as he cried against the dinosaur's chest, and heard his muffled weeps. Soon, the awkward sensation left, being replaced with security. Yoshi's chest was warm; he felt him squeeze his back, releasing a comforting pressure. Sora was in his safe zone. It was okay to let everything go.
Luigi found the two moments later, witnessing their embrace. He smiled; there was no point in intruding. Although Luigi was a good friend, he knew that Sora and Yoshi had a close bond. They had a deep understanding of each other. Yoshi would help him trudge through the sadness. Just as Sora had done for him in the past.
Wordless, Luigi left, allowing for their bond to flourish.
Sora started becoming calm. The tears stopped, as if being tightened by a faucet. His breathing was stable. He rested his head on Yoshi's shoulder. The overwhelming despair drained from his body. The world didn't seem as jagged now. It was clear and crisp. He had support from an incredible friend. But that didn't mean things were better. There was a light pang in his stomach. It was heavy, refusing to diminish.
Sora let out an uncomfortable chuckle. "Man, I feel so embarrassed right now."
"No be," Yoshi said with a warm smile. "Yoshi understands. Princess says that it good to let feelings out."
"That's true." Sora sighed. "What a mess this is."
"What's going to happen with you and Riku?"
Sora sat up, contemplating the thought. "Honestly, I don't know. And now something's happened to Kairi? This is too much."
"Things look bad," Yoshi said. He appeared cheerful. "But you no have to face it alone. Yoshi still here. And Luigi, too."
Sora looked at him, puzzled. "But what about Mario? You're still searching for him, too!"
"So what?" Yoshi simply said. "Me shouldn't be concerned for my other friend? Sora like a big brother to Yoshi. There no way me going to stand by and see you get hurt."
An emotional string plucked at Sora's chest. He never expected to leave a profound effect on someone. "Y-You really think that about me?"
Yoshi nodded.
"Aw, I'm going to get all emotional again, dude," Sora said with a slight tremble in his voice. But he was appreciative of the dinosaur's words. He felt the same way about Yoshi. It was like having a kid brother around. "That means so much to me."
"And me never going to lose Sora as a friend," Yoshi said. "We need to vow to make sure that never happens."
"All for one?"
"No. This vow between Sora and Yoshi only. A vow between close friends." He stuck out his pinky finger. "Promise that no matter what happens, Sora and Yoshi be best friends forever."
Sora chuckled at the gesture; it did seem cheesy (then again, he tended to be corny himself), but he noticed the sincerity in Yoshi's eyes. Their friendship was strong; he refused to let it meet the same horrible fate as his with Riku's. This would solidify their bond. Promise are never meant to be broken. This would serve as a reminder that were locked in this friendship forever.
After everything that happened, Sora needed that reassurance – to have a strong sense of support. There were times when he'd end up in a fog of uncertainty. But, in the distance, he'd see a lighthouse, and his friends would be waving to him from the top.
Sora grabbed his pinky. "Best friends forever."
The two shook pinkies. Sora mood brightened. While still murky, he could look towards the future with confidence. He rested his head on Yoshi's shoulder again. The two watched the sun prepare for its peaceful slumber over the horizon. The calm wind brushed cross their faces. Sora had recaptured the peace he felt on his island.
Every day he was thankful to have met his new friends. They were the force behind his resolve. But the bond he had with Yoshi was indescribable. For a while he had been searching for the two missing pieces of his island. Right now, they had drifted farther away, out of his reach. But a new piece ended up on shore. Sure, the color was different – it didn't originate from his island. However, it fit perfectly within the jigsaw puzzle of his closest friends.
The piece belonged to a green dinosaur with an insatiable appetite. Which was only matched by his big heart.
Sora was refreshed after a good-night's sleep. He walked into the lobby, stretching his arms, letting the tension disperse. Although the aches and pains of yesterday lingered, he had to move forward. It would be difficult; every step would hurt. But, if he focused on the present, it would become easier to walk.
Everyone, except for Isabelle and Digby, were lounging around in the main lobby. It was much brighter compared to yesterday; the sound of casual conversation echoed throughout the vicinity. Interspersed between them was laughter, a sound that was soothing to Sora's ears.
After Sora greeted everyone, Luigi asked him, "Hey, feeling better?"
"Not entirely," Sora said, with a hint of sadness stuck in his throat. But he was able to swallow it. "But my mood is better." He glanced at Yoshi, grateful for his help in quelling the sadness.
Yoshi responded with a smile.
"That's good," Luigi said as stood up from a couch. "Yesterday was an emotional day for us. I think we should take the day off from Star Spirit hunting."
Sora was shocked. "A-Are you serious? Is the heat frying your brain into an egg or something?"
"I figured you could use," Luigi said, chuckling. "Got a message from the coliseum before you came out. There's a new tournament happening today. Might take your mind off things."
Sora formed an appreciative smile. He had such great friends. Sure, he and Luigi's opinions were like two misshaped railway couplings that often never connected, but they considered each other's feelings. If one were broken, the other would help glue the pieces back together again. And in this uncertain time for Sora, he was thankful every day for Luigi and Yoshi's assistance in gathering up those shards.
Sora hugged Luigi, and jumped up and down with him in excitement. "You're the best! Thanks!"
"Put….me….down…." Luigi said, his voice vibrating from each shake. "I'm….not…a…piggybank." Sora chuckled, and he did so. Luigi groaned, shook his head, and said, "I think I just sorely underestimated your 'better mood.'"
Sora grinned, as his jovial assault had only begun. He got Yoshi into a headlock. "I'm always up for a battle! Right, Yoshi?"
"Sora know it!" Yoshi said, sharing his enthusiasm.
Sora gave the dinosaur a noogie. The two started roughhousing with each other. They had become so close. Luigi never imagined Yoshi would form a strong bond with this stranger they met a few days go; it seemed they were compatible with each other. And that compatibility was a hazard to Luigi's sanity. However, he didn't mind (too much, at least). They were happy together; that's all that mattered.
"Glad ye're feelin' better," Kapp'n said, approaching Sora.
Sora released his grip from Yoshi. "Yep. Thanks for letting us crash here."
"Me pleasure," Kapp'n said. "I hope ye manage t' resolve th' conflict wit' yer scallywag. Keep yer chin up, lad."
Sora felt a small, dubious nail scratch at his scalp. The chances seemed slim. It was like Riku's ears had tapered; Sora's words couldn't squeeze through the small canal. But he had to try; he had seen what the darkness does to its victims, and wasn't going to let Riku plummet into that same inescapable ditch.
"I will," Sora said, retaining his cheerful mood.
Kapp'n went through his pocket and pulled out a translucent ball. Hovering in the middle was a lime-green mist. Sora's eyes widened in surprise upon recognizing it.
"Take this charm o' mine," Kapp'n said. He handed it to Sora. "It washed up on this island one day. I figure it can brin' ye good luck."
It pulsated in Sora's hand, just like the one that contained Ness. He couldn't wait to bring it to Mia, and gain a new ally in their battle against the Heartless.
"I think I will," Sora said, as he placed the gem in his pocket. "Thanks."
Tortimer leaned out from behind Kapp'n, startling the trio. "Glad to hear it!"
"Magikoopa!" Yoshi said, panicked. "Don't worry! Me eat him before he turn us into footballs!"
"I beg your pardon?" Tortimer asked, adjusting his glasses in confusion.
Luigi covered Yoshi's mouth and gave a nervous chuckle. "N-Nothing!"
"O-Okay," Tortimer said, a little uneasy. Trying to ignore Yoshi's strange, untoward behavior, his expression became pleasant. "Well, I hope your experience here lived up to your expectations."
The trio glanced at each other, unsure of how to respond. Relaxing at a resort was the last thing on their mind. Given how sensitive Tortimer was, they didn't want to leave without giving him an answer.
"Sure," Sora said, being polite as possible. "It was really nice."
Tortimer's smiled "And for enjoying your stay, I'll give you a gift. A one of a kind, super rare chocolate covered with sprinkles, marshmallows, and a cheery on top special!"
Yoshi's mouth watered. He couldn't contain his excitement. But he, along with Luigi and Yoshi, were perplexed upon seeing what Tortimer held in front of them.
"A piece of paper!" Tortimer said, prideful. He handed the paper to Luigi, who just stared at it, dumbfounded.
"Oh, you shouldn't have," Luigi said in a flat tone; he was in disbelief of their petty gift. "How thoughtful."
"Ah, well," Totimer said, patting Luigi on the back, modest. "A former mayor must give back after all."
Luigi's inspected the image; his face lit up upon noticing familiar red marks imprinted on the paper. It was another torn page! Just their luck! How do they keep finding them so conveniently? Not that Luigi was complaining. Life could be merciful sometimes. Everyone saw Isabelle and Digby walk into the lobby. Digby was wearing one of Kapp'n's tropical clothes, complete with white flowers etched on it.
It was a much better look for him than that depressing gray cloak. In fact, Digby's presence seemed to illuminate the vicinity. He looked around the lobby, taking in every little detail, thankful to be alive – to enjoy being in the presence of good friends. He would never take any of them for granted again.
"Hey, you're looking better!" Sora said
"Yeah. Finally got a peaceful sleep." Digby was stung by his conscience. "Listen, I don't expect you to forgive me for—"
"Forget about it," Sora said in a friendly tone. "If Isabelle's okay with you, then I am, too."
"I knew you'd say something like that," Isabelle said, appreciative.
"So, what's next for you?" Luigi asked. "I'm sure you two have a lot of catching up to do."
Yoshi's lower lip quivered. "Isabelle going bye-bye?"
The twins glanced at each other. For a moment, Isabelle seemed indecisive. She thought Digby was gone forever – and now, he stood in front of her, breathing the same air, enjoying life again. Reuniting with the lost can make you appreciate them more. But something inside her prevented the notion of staying with her brother.
It filled her with guilt, but she noticed an understanding look on Digby's face. He knew what made Isabelle happy, and would never deny her that feeling.
Isabelle turned to her friends. "Every fiber of my being wants to. But my duty hasn't been fulfilled. I promised the princess I would record everything about your journey. And I never back down from a job!"
"Really?" Sora asked, excited. "That's great! It's not the same without you!"
Yoshi put his arm around Isabelle, shouting, "Hooray! The gang back together again!"
"But we were never apart," Isabelle said with a giggle.
"Oh," Yoshi said. "Well, let keep it that way!"
Isabelle pat his nose. "Aye, aye, sir."
"What about you, Digby?" Sora asked.
Digby felt the lingering pain in his body. "I'm gonna stay here. Still not one hundred percent better yet. Even when I am, I'll probably get back to what I do best: redesigning homes. I'm sure this resort could use a good sprucing."
"I know," Isabelle said, chuckling. "You'd have a heart attack if you left it as is."
After breakfast, they group prepared to board the ship. Sora wanted to stay longer, and bask in the island's tranquil atmosphere. To be reminded of home. But too much of something could yield negative results. He might miss his home even more. No, he wanted to partake in physical activity. After the verbal lashing he received from Riku yesterday, it would be nice to be rained with praise from an audience.
As everyone said good-bye, Isabelle hugged her brother one last time. She never wanted to let go.
"Come home soon," Digby said.
Isabelle pulled away from him. "I promise. We won't be apart ever again after this."
And so, the group departed for the coliseum. Isabelle was free of the burden. It was such a wonderful feeling. She opened her journal and resumed working without a care in the world. How she missed the busy sounds of scribbling. Sora noticed her contend appearance. He wished to experience that same feeling, and no longer worry about his friends.
But wishing would do nothing but have him regress into a shell of depression. Sora needed to be proactive if he wanted that wish to become true. Would it be difficult to reunite with Riku and Kairi? Yes. But at least he wasn't alone in this journey. He looked over his shoulder, smiling at Yoshi. The dinosaur returned the gesture.
Best friends forever.
