Naminé thought it was such a beautiful sight. Her long dress fluttered beautifully in the wing. It was a long white gown that reached to her ankles, instead of sleeves there were transparent veils that covered her bare shoulders and a small knot at the center that covered her dress. A transparent veil floated over the white silk with small glittering crystals decorated along the lining.
But the dress wasn't what she thought was beautiful.
It was the scenery she stood in. A large garden that was colored in green grass, decorated with the colors of the flowers that bloomed beautifully among the sight. A small gust of wind blew, she held up her hand and tuck a few strands of hair behind her ear as she drank in the sight.
It was absolutely breathtaking.
"Do you actually believe this whole thing?" a snarky voice spoke behind her. A voice that was all too familiar to her. She turned around, and to her horror, Larxene stood there, using the same expression on her face whenever she torments Naminé. She noticed that there was a golden crown sitting on top of her head.
Larxene smirked as she pointed to the crown.
"You see this? This belongs to a true princess, me!" she spat. She raised her hand, and suddenly, a yellow dagger appeared out of nowhere. "You're just another thorn in this beautiful rose!" she pointed it at Naminé.
She opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out. Larxene slowly took a step forward, holding the knife dangerously closer to her. Naminé wanted to run, but she couldn't. It's as if her legs were stuck to the ground.
"Say goodnight you waste of space!" Larxene shouted as she raised the knife. Naminé shut her eyes and clenched her teeth, raising her arms in front of her. This was it, this would be her fate. Larxene's horrible scream indicated that she was brining the knife down, causing Naminé to shut her eyes tighter.
"Watch out!" this time, a male voice spoke, along with a scream of pain from Larxene.
Naminé slowly opened here, and Larxene was no longer standing there. Instead, what she saw was a long flowy red cape that was attached to the back of a white uniform similar to that of a knight's. Her eyes widened as the wearer if the uniform turned out to be none other than Roxas.
"Are you hurt?" he asked gently. In his hand, Naminé saw a white blade shaped like a key and a blue heart at the top. And in his other hand, was the golden crown that Larxene was wearing. With a stunned face, Naminé slowly nodded and Roxax breathed out air in relief
"That's a relief," he said as he held up the crown. "I think, this belongs to you,"
He slowly took a step forward, holding the crown with both of his hands and gently placing it onto Namine's head. As he did, she got a good view of his face. Just the sight of his blue eyes, her chest grew warmer and warmer. He took a step back, giving each other more space.
All negativity was drowned out from her body, the pain, fear, sadness, it was replaced by a new feeling, but… what was this feeling?
"Glad I got here in time," he spoke, "After all, it is a knight's job to protect his princess," he said as he held her hand. "And I'm glad, that my princess is safe," he smiled. All negativity was drowned out from her body, the pain, fear, sadness, it was replaced by a new feeling, but… what was this feeling?
Oh how she wished she could stare at it forever.
"Naminé…" his voice trailed off, "Naminé…Naminé…." He said with an exhale of air with every mention of her name. "Naminé…Naminé….Naminé…."
Something was wrong. Why is he repeating her name over and over again?
"Naminé…Naminé….Naminé….Naminé…Naminé….Naminé…."
"Naminé wake up! You're going to be late for school!"
Naminé's eyes stirred open as she felt a shaking sensation at her shoulder. The first thing she saw was her mother who was constantly moving her shoulder back and forth as an attempt to wake her. Her mother sighed as she saw her daughter's eyes open.
"Good your awake. Hurry up and change, I already prepared breakfast for you," she said as Naminé nodded at her. Her mother left the room, leaving Naminé to sit up straight and try her best to wake up mentally. She rubbed her tired eyes, her dream suddenly replaying in her head.
"And I'm glad, that my princess is safe,"
Her face started to become red after hearing those words in his voice. She brought trembling face to her hands and cupped her cheeks, trying her best not to lose her cool. But what was there to lose? Roxas wasn't even standing in front of her. She fell backwards onto her soft bed.
Why was she feeling like this? She barely knew Roxas, all she knew was that he was just a guy who moved here from Twilight Town.
A guy who was probably the first person to smile at her like that.
If there was an award of who could get their face red in a matter of seconds, Naminé would've won it in a landslide with no effort needed.
She sighed; she would deal with this later. Right now, she had school to attend and another torturous day to go through.
Walking to school had never felt so hard in her life. Or was it that her schoolbag had never felt so heavy. She didn't know. All she knew, was that she just wanted to get through this day of school, maybe get bullied, go home, make more art, and sleep.
And repeat the same routine every day.
She pushed the main entrance doors of Daybreak High and the chattering of students, along with the sound of slamming lockers filled the air. And the moment she stepped through the doors; she could tell almost all eyes were on her. She sighed as she made her way to her locker with her head down. As she walked pass a group of students, her ears couldn't help but overhead them a bit.
"Did you know we're getting a transfer student today?"
"Heard he's a guy,"
"I hope he's cute,"
Naminé almost stopped dead in her tracks. Transfer student? Guy? Her mind immediately drifted towards Roxas. Could it be? He did say that he moved here from Twilight Town, does it mean he also enrolled in Daybreak High?
Her heart started to beat faster; excitement crept up it's way to her as she opened her locker. Maybe…. maybe she would be able to meet Roxas here? Once she got her books out, she closed her locker, maybe a little louder than usual, and skipped over to her class with a weirdly happy feeling in her.
The large tree that was planted outside the school doors, right by the main gates had never felt so interesting for her. Her eyes squinted as she tried to make out the details of the edges of the leave, being a sucker for accuracy. She went back to her sketchbook.
This was just how she was going to pass time while waiting for class to start. But she knew it wasn't class staring that she was looking forward to. It was whether or not Roxas would walk through those doors and hopefully recognizes her.
Her ears perked up everytime she heard the door sliding open, looking up in excitement, but instead her head dropped down the moment she saw it was just another student who's name she doesn't even know. She let out a silent sigh.
This was getting ridiculous. She was getting excited over a guy who she literally just met the previous day. The only thing she knew about it was that his blonde hair fitted perfect along his face, how his blue orbs were enough to make Naminé melt, and how… how….
How he was probably the first person in a long time, who actually had a perfectly normal conversation without any negative comments.
"And I'm glad, that my princess is safe,"
I am hallucinating. She slammed her face onto her sketchbook, making not really a loud thud noise, but enough for some people to look at her, turn away and begun to make comments about her. But at that point she didn't care, anything would as long as it would get his silvery voice out of her head.
The doors slid open, and the teacher walked in. "Morning class, get back to your seats," she said in a voice that belonged to authority. Everyone hastily sat back at their proper desks (except for Naminé) and watched as the teacher pulled out a file.
"So, before we begin, we have a new transfer student who will be joining us," she said.
Naminé's ears perked up. Her eyes darted up.
"Please come in,"
And in came a student, walking in such a cool demeanor. Naminé scanned the student from toe to head. He still had his hands in his pockets in such a rebel-esque style. His green eyes showed such a bored expression on it with silver hair floating in-
Wait…Green eyes? Silver hair?
"Please introduce yourself,"
"My name is Riku, I'm from Wayfinder High," he said in a charismatic voice. And immediately, girls squealing could be heard. Riku merely looked away from the class, showing the class his sharp chin, suddenly the volume of the girls squealing got louder.
Disappointment washed over Naminé like a huge tidal wave that just cleared all sense of hope. How could the world be so cruel to her?
"Ummm, I think you forgot me?" A voice spoke. A silvery voice. Naminé slowly turned to the door and saw the face of the familiar golden blonde boy she encountered yesterday. The teacher checked her file and squinted her eyes.
"Ahh I'm sorry, please come in and introduce yourself," she said as Roxas walked in, Naminé breath suddenly faded away. His hair was spiky as always and he still wore his checkered wristband but no rings. He smiled at the classroom and spoke.
"Hi, I'm Roxas and I'm from Twilight High, Nice to meet you guys," he said cheerfully.
Suddenly, Naminé had a newfound affection for the world for doing this for her. It was as if everything went dark and there was only one spotlight in the room, the light which was focused on Roxas.
A sudden realization dawned on her. Where would they sit? She sat the closest by the window and the corner of the room. But disappointment ate her up again, the seats next to her and in front were already taken. Roxas and Riku scanned around the room, Riku choosing an available seat at the opposite side of the room while Roxas chose to sit at spot few seats in front of her to the right. As he walked to his seat, his eyes suddenly met Naminé, and he just gave a small smile before sitting down.
It was that moment where Naminé could just melt all over her desk just like that.
The food they served at the cafeteria wasn't that bad, but it wasn't really good either, which is why Naminé usually brought her own packed lunch made by her mother who was actually one heck of a chef.
The egg sandwich was mother made tasted delicious as always as the mixed ingredients of eggs and pepper went perfectly well with the toasted bread. One of the many reasons of course her mother's cooking was her favourite.
As always, she sat along at a table in the large cafeteria, but it didn't really bother that much to her. After all, she was already used to it. The stares that walking by students would give her, along with some snickering was a common music she would hear every day. But today, it didn't bother at all and that's all because of Roxas.
It disappointed her a little that Roxas couldn't join them all for lunch as he, along with Riku, was called to the principal's office for some last-minute briefing so she had no idea when he could come in for lunch. But even if he did, would he dare sit at her table?
It was like the angel and the devil floating right by her head, one at each side. The angel reminded Naminé how nice Roxas was to her and how much he respected her feeling when he brought up her…disability, and that he treated her like a normal person. But the devil took away that hope, saying how what if Roxas became influenced by the students, suddenly giving her the same treatment that other students would give. Who knew what could happen to his new kid reputation if he sat with someone who was viewed as a…. a…. thorn in a rose. He wouldn't want that.
"Hey, Naminé right?" she heard, and she turned around quickly. Standing there, was Roxas who was holding a tray of canteen food with a smile on his face. "Or did I get your name wrong? I have a horrible memory," he chuckled.
Naminé's body became stiff. Roxas raised an eyebrow.
"Uh, I'm sorry if I got your name wrong," he let out small laugh as Naminé quickly shook her head, trying to tell Roxas how wrong he was.
No, you got my name perfectly right was what she wanted to say if her could speak.
Her head quickly looked around, trying to find her sketchbook, her means of communication, only to realize that she had left it in her bag, which was in the classroom. Frustration started to grow on her but luckily, Roxas seemed to get the message.
"So, I did get it right, right?" he laughed again.
Why does he keep laughing? But Naminé wasn't complaining.
"So…can I sit here with you?" he asked.
With you. Those last two words rang in her head. But before she could stare into space like another weird person, she nodded and motioned to the seat in front of her. With a smile, Roxas walked over to the seat opposite to her and set his tray down.
"What a coincidence, the school I transferred to is the one that you go to," he beamed. Naminé couldn't do anything but nod back. Oh, how badly she wanted to just speak to him normally. She suddenly felt a buzz at her back pocket. She slapped her forehead.
Her phone.
She reached for it and turned it on, seeing that the buzz was a notification for a not so important reminder, ignored it, and tapped on the notes app.
'Yeah, It really is, I never even really thought about what school you enrolled in when you moved here' She typed and slid the phone to him.
"Ahh, I see your phone has become a substitute for your book," he chuckled as he eyed her sandwich. "Hey, I don't remember seeing that as one of the choices back there,"
She took back her phone back.
'This is my mother's, I don't eat the cafeteria food here, it's terrible' she showed the phone back.
"Well… shit," he said, "No wonder I smelled something strange," he pocked the meatloaf with his fork. "Will keep in mind to bring packed lunch next time," he noted as he leaned back a bit. "So, I wanted to ask, since I did see you drawing yesterday, is it something you do as a hobby?"
'Yeah, I've been drawing since I was kid' Roxas' eyes widened.
"Really? That's so cool, you must be awesome at it," he praised as Naminé's face slowly turned red.
'I mean, I'm not THAT good yet but I try to get better each time'
"I should be the judge of that," he boasted, pumping his chest out while putting af fist by his heard. Naminé could only let out a silent chuckle.
"But seriously though, I would love to see your- "
"ROXAS!" a scream almost echoed throughout the cafeteria, cutting Roxas off. Before she could react, a student suddenly slid on the chairs of the table an engulfed Roxas in a big bearhug. Her confused look was still plastered on her face as she saw the student had spiky red hair and had a bigger physique than him.
"Oh, I miss you buddy!" he faked cried.
Even if she could speak, she would still be too speechless to say anything.
"If you missed me, you wouldn't have left me at the airport yesterday," he grunted as he pushed the student's face away. The student went back with an exaggerated hurt look.
"Wow, we haven't seen each other in year and yet you still treat me this way," he sniffed the air as Naminé saw another student walking up to him, this time a girl.
"Told ya he would still be a bit salty," the girl laughed.
"Hey this is on you too Xion," he remarked. Naminé's eyes widened as she recognized the girl she bumped into the previous day. Xion sat down next to him.
"I already told Axel he shouldn't try to challenge but he still insisted it! I had to call a cab just to get him home because he couldn't walk," she said in a defensive way. The spiky red head named Axel just gave a goofy smile.
"Well, in the end I learned my mistake," he announced, "and realised I should've gone and mixed the biscuits in the water so that I could swallow them easier. The more you know," he said as Xion gave a disgusted look.
"Don't tell me you're still planning on going for that stupid challenge again,"
"Like I said Xion, free burgers for a month," he said those last words in a chanting voice. It was only then Axel noticed the blonde who was sitting in front of Roxas. "Damn Roxas, only your first day and you're already picking up chicks,"
Naminé's face suddenly turned beet red at Axel's words. And she wasn't the only one. Roxas responded by smacking Axel on the head.
"Ow! What was that for?" he complained.
"For having a big mouth," Roxas responded. Meanwhile, Naminé didn't notice that Xion had been eying her since just now.
"Oh! You're the girl that I bumped into yesterday after class," she said. "Nice to meet you, I'm Xion," she smiled sweetly.
"Axel, make sure you get it memorized," he chimed in.
Silence responded them as she knew they were waiting for Naminé to introduce herself to them. She was about to type it out on her phone when Roxas coughed.
"Guys, this is Naminé," he grinned, "We met at the park yesterday, so it was actually a coincidence that we're in the same class,"
Axel raised an eyebrow. "Yesterday? But I saw you guys chatting like best friends or something when I walked in,"
"Maybe it's because she actually helped me back home?" he spat as Axel raised both hands up.
"Touché,"
"Well, Naminé hope you're ready to deal with Roxas being in your class now," Xion snickered.
"Hey! What's that supposed to mean huh?" he whined.
Naminé couldn't help but drink in the sight. Ever since meeting him, all she saw him do was smile but now when he was with Xion and Axel, he did more than just smile, going to the level of smacking his friends like that. But yet, she couldn't be surprised at the same time. After all, she only knew him for a day, and there was really no harm in getting to know him better.
She watches in amazement as Roxas' face shifted to laughing along with Xion and Axel. It was hard to focus on what they were talking about as Naminé felt a fuzzy feeling to grow in her chest. She slowly put her hand to her chest.
What is this?
Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the loud ring of the school bell.
"Well, guess we better head back to class then," Xion said as she stood up, Axel following behind her.
"Yeah, sucks that you weren't put in our class," Axel held out his fist which Roxas fistbumped it.
"Hope I'll see you around Naminé," Xion giggled as she walked away with Axel. "Be sure to look after Roxas for us," she called out as Naminé could feel her face heating up.
"Xion!" he called out in annoyance. The girl happily ignored and walked through the doors, leaving a very flustered Naminé and Roxas.
"Please just ignore them, they always say stupid stuff," Roxas said as he pushed back some of his hair. His eyes saw the gathering students who were standing up to leave the cafeteria.
"So…." he voiced, "Want to walk back to class together?"
Naminé could see herself nodding up and down at a ridiculous speed, but in order not to look like it, she nodded just once.
Few Hours Later
Finally! Naminé silently sighed in exhaustion as the teacher slammed the bottom of his file on the table to straighten it and walk out of the classroom. She was tired, and she definitely knew it. In her defense, always hearing the teacher giving out homework is always a tiring thing to do.
She looked over to Roxas who just stretched his arms and grabbed his bag. Naminé stood up as he swung the bag over his shoulder, getting to to leave the classroom.
A feeling inside of her told her to follow Roxas so that maybe they could talk more (technically, so that he could talk more) but the crowing students at the front of the door to leave just washed away the feeling.
She grabbed her bag and joined the crowd at the back, wanting to leave the room too. She suddenly had an idea for a new art piece she wanted to make during Math class, so she was in a bit of a hurry to rush home. To her slight disappointment, Roxas was nowhere to be seen.
With one last glance at the opposite hallway, she made her way to her locker, going down the familiar hallway where yesterday's events took place. She slightly shuddered at the thought of running into Larxene here again. She shook it off and opened the locker. After putting a few books in, she closed the locker and was about to zip her bag when she heard snickering behind her.
Oh no. She reluctantly turned her head around and to her slight surprise, Larxene wasn't there, but instead, her 2 goons from yesterday stood there, chuckling to themselves.
Just ignore them, just ignore them, just ignore them. She closed her locker shut and was immediately greeted by a hand slamming onto the locker next to me.
"Well, well well, guess Missy Invisible decides to ignore us?" she snickered, feeling proud at the nickname.
"Nice one Roxie," the other goon commented.
"You got that right Nora,"
Naminé took a quick scan around herself, trying to find a way to get herself out of this mess. She turned to the other side of the hallway but one of the girls quickly sidestepped in front of her.
"Ah ah ah, not so fast there,"
"Do you know that because of you Larxene is in detention for swearing?" she rasped.
The other one, named Roxie, gave an exaggerated gasp.
"Really?" she mocked, "I didn't know you could get punished by throwing away trash,"
Both girls started to laugh at their comments as Naminé felt an uncofrtable feeling inside her. She slowly looked up to see the laughing faces of the girls, clearly not hiding the fact that that their laughter was directed at her. She tightened her grip on her bag strap, an action which they closely notice.
"Oh, now what do we have here?" Roxie raised an eyebrow as she stuck her hand out and quickly pulled on the strap. Despite the resistance Naminé gave, Roxie still pulled the bag away from her, a small tearing noise could be heard. Naminé mouthed a "Hey" on instinct.
"Oh, what's that? Didn't catch that," Nora mocked.
Naminé stepped forward and tried to grab her hand back, but Roxie instead pushed her away, a little bit forceful as her back slammed into the locker. She winced in pain at the impact. She watched as they opened her backpack, moving it up and down, spilling out all of its contents, including her sketchbook.
"Missy here really is just another nerd," Nora remarked.
"Yeah it's all just books," Roxie added.
Naminé wanted to argue, she wanted to shout back, she wanted them to stop. But…. she couldn't. She couldn't do anything but helplessly watch them tear through her belongings. Eyes around the area were already burrowing into her, the constant stares and the occasional snickering, it was just another repeat of the usual routine
"Awww, is little Naminé going to cry?" Nora scoffed.
"Maybe she'll actually say something this time?"
"Stop it!" a booming voice filled the hallway, causing a few students to look down their way. The voice was strong enough to stop Nora, Roxie and Naminé. They all turned their heads to see Roxas walking up to them. Without saying anything, he grabbed Naminé's bag from their hands.
"It must be so fun for you guys to torment other students like this," he spat with a voice full of venom, something surprised Naminé, no, more like shocked.
"Wow Missy, you're so desperate you need the new kid to stand up for you? Ten out of ten," Roxie teased.
"Yeah? What's so wrong with the new kid standing up for his friend?" he bellowed.
What? Naminé was too stunned. Was someone standing up for her? She looked at Roxas' eyes, they were filled with so much determination. He barely knew them but he could speak for himself and for her with so much confidence. It was like an aura was surrounding him.
Why is he doing this? She knew if they watched as Roxas stood up for her, he would just become another target of bullying. After all, the strong always prey on the weak like her, but, was Roxas weak? His eyes glaring daggers at Roxie and Nora practically denied her thoughts.
He was the complete opposite of her. He wasn't weak, he was strong. She's the one who's always weak. Her lips trembled, Just stop.
"Guess Missy Invisible here managed to rope in the new kid," Nora gloated.
"Stop calling her that!" Roxas glowered.
Stop, you don't have to be like me.
"Why should I? Why are you even helping her? She can't even speak she's a freak!" Roxie sneered.
"A freak? Are you talking about her or you?" he hissed.
Please, you don't have to do this.
"Do you really want to associate yourself with someone like her?"
"What's wrong with that!" he spat back.
Stop! Naminé quickly grabbed whatever belongings that was her's on the ground and grabbed her bag in a rough manner from Roxas without looking at him. All he could do was responded with a "Woah" and watched as Naminé darted out of the school halls.
"Naminé wait!" she could hear Roxas calling out for her but she ignored him. She suffered enough just by being in the school, the last thing she wanted was someone else like Roxas to suffer because of her.
Once she ran fast enough, fatigue began to catch up with her and her legs slowed down. She looked back and saw that she was already a good distance away from the school. She sighed in exhaustion, how was she going to face Roxas tomorrow? It was only his first day and he soon would be most likely be another target for Larxene.
But will he really? She remembered how confident and how brave he was standing up to Nora and Roxie like that. If he could do it for her, surely he could do it for him.
What an interesting day at school. And by interesting, she means any word that could show a stronger meaning than horrible.
NIGHT
Guess I need a new bag. She thought to herself as she examined her bag strap. It was still intact, but she were to wear it the strap wouldn't hold it much longer. She wondered if she had any bags that could be used as a temporary replacement.
She looked out the window and was greeted by the dark sky of the night. It was already too late to buy another bag, or she was just too tired to do anything but draw at the moment.
Oh yeah I almost forgot about it. The art piece she came up with during her last class just now. She eagerly zipped open her backpack to grab her sketchbook….. only to grab air instead.
What? She bended over and checked the contents of her bag. Her useless textbooks, notes and pencil case were there, but her sketchbook wasn't. Dread was slowly creeping up onto her.
No no no…. She was taking things out of her bag, tossing them on the floor like a madwoman. But she didn't care, where was her beloved sketchbook? The bag was empty, it was only then she realised, her sketchbook fell out during the fiasco just now.
She put her trembling hands to her face. All she could do was pray that her sketchbook was fine and in safe hands.
Roxas stared at the white sketchbook that was sitting on his desk. He was staringat it, as if he was waiting for something to happen. On the cover of the book, and the word "Naminé" written on it so it was obvious who the owner was.
He leaned back on his chair, letting his head rest backwards.
"What a day," he voiced.
After Naminé ran away, those two strange girls just gave a simple "Whatever" and walked away from him. Xion and Axel had finally come by to see Roxas being stared at by other students. And before leaving, he felt something by his foot and saw a white sketchbook lying on the ground.
Since Naminé had already left the building, he decided to bring it home and hold on to it, maybe he could return it back to her the next day.
But it was sketchbook. A book used for drawings. He knew he really shouldn't intrude on other people's property but curiosity was banging his head. He picked the book up from the table and stared at the cover.
"A peek wouldn't hurt," he muttered to himself, flipped on the first page, and his jaw dropped in awe. It was a drawing of character from a certain game that he played. But it wasn't the character that made him stare at the page, it was the drawing itself.
He was practically a noob when it came to this field but even he could tell that Naminé managed to get the facial features just right. And even the shading and smaller details such the wrinkles in the clothes.
The hands. She knew how to draw the hands so well.
Roxas flipped to the next page and saw a drawing of a beautiful scenery of waterfall, almost making him gasp out loud. Not only could she draw characters but she could also draw scenery so well? How talented was this girl? He continued flipping pages as if he didn't care about intruding. And each time he flipped, he couldn't be disappointed, it was as if Naminé improved with each drawing.
Eventually, he stumbled upon the last page with was filled with a drawing of a sunset.
"Guess she was drawing this back at the park,"
Suddenly, he looked like he'd been struck with something. An idea.
"Maybe…she can help me," he said to himself.
