Chapter 24 –
Garcia's hands were shaking as she entered the conference room, everyone else was already sitting around the table, the mumbled chatter falling silent as Garcia placed her laptop on the table and the sound of Lockwood's voice filled the room.
"You little, slut, I will track you down and kill you!"
"Oh sorry."
Garcia spoke quietly as she muted the volume on her laptop and sat down looking around at all the concerned faces.
"So the device is still working?"
Garcia nodded at Hotch as she cleared her throat.
"Yes I have been recording all of what he has been saying and that was one of the nicer comments."
"No wonder she was willing to die."
Emily's voice was quiet but everyone heard and echoed her sentiments.
"I have managed to track the signal though."
Garcia quickly pulled up a map on the large screen.
"He's in D.C?"
"I've narrowed it down to that apartment building but obviously I can't tell you where in that building."
"That's great Garcia, you keep tracking the signal and let us know if it moves, Erin can you stay with the kids?"
"Of course Aaron."
Erin nodded her head as she got up and wandered out of the room, stopping briefly beside Garcia."
"Excellent work Penelope."
Garcia felt her cheeks redden slightly at the compliment before he gathered up her equipment and headed back to her office.
Kate sat on her dad's desk, swinging her legs in a set motion as she watched the girl sleep but then her eyes caught sight of her dad approaching and Kate jumped off the desk before she jogged out of the office.
"Hey dad!"
Kate spoke in a hushed voice as she embraced her dad, gathering comfort as he reciprocated the embrace.
"Hello munchkin, everything ok?"
"Uh huh."
Dave put his hands on Kate's shoulders and looked in his office and then back at his daughter.
"Mom wants me to keep an eye on her."
"How is she?"
"Well she hasn't woken yet."
"Are you sure that you're ok with this munchkin?"
Dave looked concerned at his daughter, he knew that the kid needed looking after but not at the expense of Kate's well being. Kate turned in and saw the girl starting to shift around uncomfortably.
"I'll be fine dad, if anyone understands what she is going through it's me."
Kate managed a small smiled before she kissed her dad on the cheek, then she quickly moved back into the office and sat down on the sofa, stroking Mary's hair softly.
"What's going on?"
"Huh?"
Dave turned quickly and saw Emily standing beside him.
"I just wanted to check on Kate before we left."
"And?"
Dave pondered for a moment, taking a deep breath and Emily could see the concern on his face.
"Do I need to stay?"
"No Emily, Kate will be fine, I know why you did it."
Emily nodded her head as she took a hold of Dave's hand.
"Thanks."
"Good right, we'd better go and catch this bastard."
"No!"
The tears were already trickling down Mary's face as the scream left her mouth. Without another thought Kate helped her to sit upright and held her tight.
"It's ok, open your eyes Mary."
Mary blinked her eyes open and looked at the unfamiliar face.
"Don't worry it was just a nightmare."
Kate smiled as Mary reached up and wiped her tears away.
"Where am I?"
"At the FBI headquarters."
"Oh yeah."
Mary slumped forward while Kate kept an arm around her, the memories of how she had been after escaping the cabin were fresh in her mind and Kate took a long deep breath.
"Are you ok?"
Kate spoke quietly as she felt Mary nod her head in response before she slowly sat back up and Kate moved her arm away to allow Mary a bit of personal space. Mary rubbed her eyes before she turned and looked once again at Kate.
"Who are you?"
"My mom was the person you tried to blow up."
Immediately Kate regretted her words as Mary buried her head into her hands.
"Sorry I didn't mean it like that it's just been a rough couple of days."
"It's ok I did try and kill her. Why am I here?"
Mary frowned as Kate passed her a bottle of water but she gratefully took a long sip.
"My mom thought that you could do with some rest and asked me to look after you, she obviously knows that you didn't mean to hurt her."
"There was this guy..."
"Please I don't need to know, the reason Agent Prentiss asked me to look after you is that she adopted me after a case she worked on."
"Oh."
Mary bowed her head as Kate spoke before she stifled a yawn.
"Why don't you try and get some more sleep?"
"Ok thanks."
Mary curled up once again on the sofa, trying to make herself as comfortable as she could considering her injuries.
Morgan gestured for everyone to gather around him as they climbed out of the vehicles outside the apartment building.
"Garcia says that the signal is coming from inside, there's no basement and its three stories high. The priority is to clear the building quietly and efficiently and find the unsub. JJ, Reid and Rossi you take the back, Prentiss Hotch and I will go in the front, SWAT team is on its way to provide backup but I don't want to wait."
Hotch nodded in approval as they all ensured that their flak jackets were tight and in place before they jogged over and entered the building.
Alex watched anxiously as Garcia bit her fingernails, both sitting in silence as they watched the monitors, the feed from the implant was still coming in but Garcia had muted the sound, unable to listen to the torrent of abuse any longer.
"Garcia!"
Alex to pointed to one of the monitors as Garcia burst into life, her fingers furiously tapping away at the keyboard before she spoke into her headset to Morgan.
"He's on the right hand side of the building, signal is really strong so near the top."
"Ok babygirl Em and I are now heading up while the others get the civilians out."
Garcia drew a deep breath as her and Alex fell silent once again.
Emily was breathing heavily as she reached the top floor but she kept moving swiftly towards the door at the end of the corridor, she knew that Morgan was close behind her but there was something drawing her towards that room. Emily banged loudly on the door, her gun drawn at the ready, counting in her head to five before she drew on all her strength and kicked the door in. Immediately she saw him and instinct saved her, diving to the floor as the bullet whistled at head height.
"Prentiss!"
Morgan sprinted down the corridor as he heard two further gun shots, his heart beating fast as he entered the room and found Emily lying on the floor, but then he turned around and saw the unsub.
"Prentiss?"
"Is he dead?"
"Yeah, you ok?"
"I am now."
Emily allowed a smile of satisfaction to cross her face as she accepted Morgan's hand to help her up, looking over at Adam Lockwood's body, her shot had hit him right in the head, before the two of them walked out of the room, with Emily heading right into Dave's arms as she whispered into his ear.
"Can we go home now?"
