This is it! The moment you have all been waiting for!
To Hinata's big surprise, she didn't find Sasuke.
He found her.
"So today is the idiot" he said out of nowhere, scaring her as he came out of a corner unannounced. He raised an eyebrow when he saw her state, but didn't comment further.
Hinata had a hard time looking him in the eye, so instead, she talked to the floor. "What… what are you t-talking about…?"
"Naruto. You gave him my bento… or what I thought was my bento."
Hinata's head snapped up towards him when she heard this. She could feel her face becoming red. "H-H-H-How...?"
"My apartment has windows. I saw you leaving every day after you left the bento for me."
Ok, it was the moment for Hinata to faint… but wait, she can't until she completes her mission! Still, how stupid of her! How did she never notice before he could see her leaving through the window?
Ashamed, Hinata lowered her face again, but then she realized something. He knew the person giving him bentos was her all this time, which meant, he had been eating the bentos she gave him without complain for over two months now. Slowly, she looked up again, hopeful this wouldn't be as difficult as she thought, however, the only thing that received her when they locked eyes was a scowl.
She squeaked involuntarily.
"So this is how you do it? When you feel pity, you give them a bento, and when someone else catches your eye, you change targets?" he asked, doing his best not to sound angry but failing. He was still young, and therefore, not good enough at covering his emotions.
Hinata blinked, surprised by his conclusion. "N-No… it is not l-like that…"
"I don't care. I don't want your bentos anymore" he said, turning around and ready to leave. Hinata squirmed, afraid that if she didn't say anything now then it would all be over, and so, she took a hold of the hem of his shirt, stopping him.
"P-Please don't say that! I-I-I…!"
"Don't touch me!" he yelled, roughly slapping her hand away. Hinata staggered back. She looked at him, bewildered. Sasuke looked affected. He glanced away, his expression hard. "Just… don't touch me" he murmured softly.
Hinata blinked, then nodded. "O-Ok… I-I won't do it a-a-again, and, um…" she fidgeted. To her relief and slight surprise, Sasuke stood there, waiting for what she had to say. That only made her more nervous. Whatever she was going to say now, it had to be the right thing otherwise she would lose any hope of him ever accepting the bentos again, and with it, she could already envision a future full of even more disappointed stares and harsh lectures from her father. "I…" she could see Sasuke was already losing his patience, so, she took in a deep breath, deciding what to say "m-my f-f-father asked m-me to d-do it… he t-told me to b-bring you ben-bentos and t-today he sa-said I had t-to give it to you m-myself…" she explained, again sad she could not control her stutter.
Sasuke blinked, taking in the new information. He glanced down, pensive, but Hinata could not decipher the emotions behind his eyes. He bit his lip before glancing up at her, his shoulders sagging and the defensive position he was in disappearing.
"Well…" he said in a small voice, "it can't be helped then, if it was your father who asked you to do it…" Hinata did not know the emotion lacing his voice. It was not disappointment, but rather something closer to… melancholy? Before she could try to better understand what he felt Sasuke took a step forward, causing Hinata's breath to catch in her throat. But her nervousness at the sudden proximity was soon forgotten when his hands went over to the bento box she was still holding, the only one she had left, and the one that was originally meant for her.
She relinquished the bento easily enough, but was surprised when, instead of leaving, Sasuke sat down where they were and lifted the lid. He took a look at the contents, definitely less than when the bento was specifically made for him, and after a second of hesitation grabbed an onigiri. He passed it to her.
Hinata was surprised. "Take it" he said, without looking at her, "this afternoon we have training… if you don't eat it will be difficult for you."
Understanding, Hinata took the onigiri, however, Sasuke was not done. "Also… would you mind leaving me alone for a while?" he asked, his tone completely different to anything she had heard from him since starting the academy again.
Hinata nodded, stepping back, and soon after she was sitting under a tree, watching the rest of the children playing while lunch period was still ongoing. She bit the onigiri slowly, her mind swirling with thoughts, and just as she gave the last bite the bell rung and it was time to go back to class.
