"And? What do you think you're doing here? Hinata!"
Hinata flinched at his tone. She dropped the fighting stance, not wanting to look hostile, though that didn't help her when faced with the imposing figure of one Uchiha Sasuke. She started playing with her fingers, her eyes darting everywhere but at him.
"E-E-Ehm… t-t-that is… I-I m-mean... I-I-I!"
Sasuke lost his patience. He advanced until he was just centimeters from her, and roughly grasped the collar of her baggy t-shirt. Hinata squeaked, feeling her feet being lifted from the ground.
"Stop stuttering!" he shouted with so much force Hinata felt her ears ringing even afterwards. She bit her lip and closed her eyes, holding back tears.
"B-B-Bento! F-Father told me to b-bring you a bento!" she finally screamed back, more due to nervousness than to get back at him. Sasuke dropped her harshly while taking a step back. Hinata fell on her bottom, whimpering. She didn't dare open her eyes, but she soon became curious when she couldn't hear her companion moving or making any noise. Her body was still trembling, and it continued to do doubly so once she saw his expression.
Incredulity and rage. More than anything, rage.
He let out a humorless laugh, stepping closer, threatening her with his superior height. "A bento? You entered my family's district on this day… just to give me a bento?!" he sounded so incredulous, so shocked and angry. His tone and question actually made Hinata feel both stupid and selfish. She came here, to this place she wasn't supposed to be, to give him a bento because her father asked her to. It truly sounded unbelievable.
She lowered her head, ashamed, but Sasuke wasn't done with her just yet.
"Do you always do what your father tells you without questioning? Don't you have a mind of your own? What part of your tiny brain actually convinced you this was a good idea? Disturbing me like this on this specific day!"
Hinata's lower lip shook, and she held it with her teeth. Gulping, she found the courage to speak. "I-I-I wasn't… I-I didn't mean to be disrespectful… I simply wanted to-!"
"Get out."
The girl blinked, taken aback at the suddenness of the order. She was sure he was going to scream at her some more. She opened her mouth to ask, but before she could do so, Sasuke walked over to her forgotten backpack and threw it at her. Hinata barely caught it.
"Are you deaf? I told you to get out!" he screamed this time, recovering some of his fire from before. Hinata didn't need to be told twice. With a hop, she was on her feet again and running, not once looking back. Only when she was at the gates of the district did she stop, taking in big mouthfuls of air. She turned around, seeing once again the empty streets and abandoned buildings, with the tree far away almost at the edge of her sight. Sasuke was no longer visible. Hinata shuddered, shook her head, and continued walking, this time slower.
On the way home, she thought about what had just happened. She had never seen Sasuke behaving that way, not even when he was his angriest with all the girls following him. It was obvious she had touched a fiber. And she knew exactly what fiber it had been.
Today was the anniversary of the massacre of his clan. He had come alone, probably to pray and offer his respects to the family he had lost, and in his moment of vulnerability, when he had allowed himself to lower his walls and just let the sorrow free reign, he had seen her, an interloper in his family's domain.
Of course he would be angry. And her reason for being there was not even a good one. Maybe if it had been done by her volition, Sasuke wouldn't have been so angry, but it was not. She was just a puppet who did things for others without a second thought. Sasuke's words about her not having a mind of her own affected her. They were true. She was only doing this because she was told to. Not because she wanted. And the need to complete what her father ordered her to was stronger than her empathy.
She could have just left the bento in front of his apartment, now that she thought about it, or wait for him there. That would have been better… but she didn't. And now, the bento was probably ruined with all the jostling from the backpack. She would have to go back home and tell her father what happened.
She only hoped her father wouldn't be too disappointed. She also hoped that Sasuke wouldn't be so angry with her he would start avoiding her. Though they didn't speak much, she had come to appreciate him… and if he hated her because of this, she would be really sad.
In case you haven't noticed, this is the very first time Sasuke has ever called Hinata by name. Ouch.
This will be a turning point in their relationship.
