When Braedey returned to the Josephine Railway after his visit to Sodor, his friends gave him a big welcome home. Liliana and Diana smiled when they saw him, and both Austin and Max were pleased to have their friend home. Belle was introduced to Braedey, and the GWR 4900 engine was happy to have the LBSCR E1 be a new friend. Once back home, Braedey got back into the rhythm, and he was back to taking tourist trains around the Lake District. Belle also helped out with him and Diana, Austin and Max also happy to have their friend back. Braedey would occasionally tell his friends about the other engines on Sodor, as well as the events that had transpired while he was on the island, and the others would revel in the news.
The others would ask him, 'Maybe we could go to Sodor', and Braedey would reply, 'You will have to talk to Mr. Franklin about it', and the others agreed to this.
On an early yet brisk morning, Mr. Franklin drove up to the sheds to give an announcement. Braedey and Liliana were both just fired up, and ready to get the first trains shunted and ready for the others when they're fired up and ready.
"Everyone. I have some good news." Mr. Franklin began, the engines looking to the redhead. "I've managed to call Shadow's owner, asking if he could come back to our railway to help. Also, I've made some lengthy calls, and an engine from the National Railway Museum will be arriving here as well. It'll be a surprise for both Shadow and all of you." He added.
"Ooh." The engines did sound excited for meeting the two new engines soon, except for Croghan, obviously.
"Pah! All this for two engines coming." Croghan grumbled. "Who gives a damn?"
Mr. Franklin narrowed his eyes at the GT3 Turbine engine. "For that, Croghan, you shall remain in the sheds until further notice." He stated.
Croghan looked at the controller. "What?! You can't do that!" He said back.
"I can, and I will." Mr. Franklin spoke back firmly. He turned back to Braedey and the others. "Now, when the new engines a hearty welcome." He said calmly.
"Yes, sir." The engines replied in unison. With that, Mr. Franklin walked away.
"So, Shadow are coming, as well as someone from the National Railway Museum." Diana wondered. "Who might the second engine be?"
"Who knows for now." Braedey chuffed. "I'd better get the trains ready to go."
"And I need to go and check if any parts of the line need maintenance." Liliana added, she and Braedey heading off to sort out the trains, and check on the tracks.
Meanwhile, Shadow was making his way down to the Josephine Railway, feeling good about seeing his friends again. Along the way, he did pass by some diesels, who tooted their horns in hello to him, and he whistled back to them.
Many miles further down the line, far behind Shadow, another engine was making her way down towards the Josephine Railway. She was going to surprise Shadow when she arrived, and as well a surprise to the engines on the railway. The engine's name was Madeline.
Madeline is an LNER (London & North Eastern Railway) Class V6 2-6-2 locomotive. Her class was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for mix-traffic use. It was a concept design for the LNER before Gresley died in 1941, and the design hadn't gotten off the blueprint stages. Madeline is painted in LNER black, with red lining along the boiler, wheels, pistons, and tender, with the number 6525 on her buffer and both sides of her cab, the letters 'L.N.E.R' painted onto her tender, and sporting black wheels with the red lining.
The V6 locomotive has similarities in their appearance and mechanical layout to that of the V2 and V4 Classes. The V6 was to be a lightweight alternative, suitable for use over the LNER. The V6 had a scaled-down version of the Gresley Pacific boiler with a grate area of 27.5sq ft. It'll have a tractive effort of 30,000lbs produced by boiler pressure of 300psi, and three cylinders of 15" diameter, incorporating a fully welded steel firebox and a single thermic syphon for water circulation. It was anticipated more would be produced, but after the death of Nigel Gresley, and his succession by Edward Thompson, none were built. Instead, the LNER Thompson Class B1 was adopted as the LNER's standard mixed-traffic locomotive.
Madeline was a recently constructed locomotive, for he had been built from the original blueprints and design drawing from Nigel Gresley himself, and he was built by the same people in the National Railway Museum in York. It's also where she and Shadow met, and the two were reunited like brother and sister. It took some time, but Madeline was fully built and after trail runs, she was 100% ready for action. She had been parked next to Mallard in the museum, and she had become a working exhibit.
Madeline has a very bubbly and naive personality. She's rather childish and playful. She's actually quite a lot like Clara in a way except she's more childish and playful. Don't let looks deceive one though, because she will not hesitate to tear anyone a new one if they talk smack about her LNER family. It'll also be relatively easy for her with that strong Caprotti valve gear. But, basically she's like a hyper 8-year-old little girl who loves to have fun.
"Well, looks like today is going to be a good day." Madeline said to herself, a small smile appearing on her face. "I'm working on a small railway, but if I'm doing some work, then I'm happy to do it." She added.
Back with Shadow, he eventually turned down on the line to the Josephine Railway. He could see the trees that were too close to the tracks had been trimmed back for safety, while the rails look like they're brand new.
Shadow soon arrived at Marion Station. He could see Croghan was locked up in his shed berth, with Max shunting coal trucks and coaches in the shunting yards nearby, while Liliana was putting away the inspection train in a siding.
"Hello, Shadow." Liliana called. "Good timing."
"As always." Shadow chuffed. "So, what does Mr. Franklin have for me to do?" He asked.
Before Liliana could reply to the question, the sound of an LNER whistle could be heard in the distance, much to Shadow's confusion. A moment goes by, then the sound of an engine approaching gets the other's attention. After a little while, a black LNER locomotive pulled up alongside Shadow.
"Hello, brother. Good to see you in person." Madeline announced happily.
"What in the-" Shadow looked at the engine alongside him. He then smiled. "Well, this is a surprise. Hello, sister Madeline. I didn't expect you to turn up at all. I thought you were still up in York."
"Well, the museum curator said he got a call from Mr. Franklin, and he asked me to help you and the others here on this railway." Madeline explained. She then looked over to Liliana. "So, what's our job for today?" She asked.
"Well, Mr. Franklin has assigned Braedey and Diana for the tourist trains around the Lake District." Liliana began to explain to the two LNER engines. "You two, you'll be double-heading a passenger run from here, to Barrow-in-Furness, then off to Vicarstown."
"That's easy." Madeline replied, then looked to Shadow. "So, let's go and get those coaches. The people are waiting."
A few minutes later, Madeline and Shadow were now at the platform with four coaches coupled up behind them, Madeline behind Shadow. Once the passengers got onboard, the two LNER engines whistled in chorus, and they chuffed out of the station, Madeline excited for this run, and Shadow having to try and keep her 'on the leash', so to speak.
Liliana watched the two engines go, and she smiled. "Wow. Those two work very well together. And here I thought siblings always fight with one another." With that, she rolled off to the shunting yards to marshal some trucks and coaches.
Meanwhile, out on the Lake District rail-lines, Braedey was making his way down the line, passing by one of the smaller lakes, as he made his way over to one of the main stations that is nearby the larger lakes. This was one of his best runs, the straightaway being a spot for him to stretch his wheels.
"Man, it's days like these that I like to be in service." Braedey said to himself, looking at the calm landscape around him. He then looked further on down the line, and he saw a red signal ahead of him, and up on a passing loop. "Better slow down."
Sure enough, as Braedey pulled up towards the passing loop, and she came to a stop in the opposite track. He sat in the loop track for three minutes, then Diana steamed into view. She blew her whistle to Braedey, going past him, and he blew his whistle back in response, as the Caledonian engine puffed on down the line. After Diana had passed by, the signal turned green. Braedey smiled, and with a toot of his whistle, he chuffed out of the loop line, and headed off down the line.
"It was a good idea of Mr. Franklin to include these passing loops for us engines to pass one another." Braedey commented, then he accelerated along, soon reaching about 40mph, the respectable speed to go along. "Easy runs like these are a good thing."
Soon enough, Braedey began to pull up at one of the big stations down the line. It was known as Lakeside. This station has two platforms, one with a large brick station building, as well as a few small buildings, like a coffee shop and kiosk, as well as a place for a small bus to park up. There's a small footbridge that goes over the tracks to allow access to each platform. There is also a small track crossing for people. Braedey pulled up to the platform, coming to a gentle stop with a hiss of steam from his pistons. He watched as the passengers began to disembark the coaches, and they began to make their way down towards the big lake, where there are boat tours and rides.
"Well, at least I have some time to cool off and refuel." Braedey uncoupled from his coaches, and he puffed up to the water tower.
Braedey soon began to doze off, his crew refuelling him, refilling his boiler, as well as topping up the water tank in his tender, along with loading up on more coal for the return trip. After a little while, Braedey woke up, as he was reversed up to his coaches, now coupling up to them.
"Okay, boy. It's time to get going." Braedey's driver called in.
"Okay, okay. I'm good to go." Braedey replied back, steam swirling around him. "Let's be on our way."
About five minutes later, Braedey was now on his way back down the line, going along at speed, and he was enjoying his run down the line. He smiled to himself, as he charged onward.
"If we can, we can try and get back to Marion quicker than before." Braedey challenged himself, and he began to go a bit faster.
Braedey lets off another whistle, one that echoed throughout the valley, as he powered along at speed. He was going along at a tremendous speed.
Over at Barrow-in-Furness, both Madeline and Shadow were both taking on water and coal after their long journey to and from Sodor. The siblings really got along on their long runs to and from, and plus, it was an enjoyable experience for the two LNER engines. As the two sat nearby some coal bunkers to top up on the coal in their tenders, they soon caught sight of a vehicle driving up towards the station. The vehicle pulled up to a bus stop, allowing passengers to get off, so they can board the next trains going in and out of Barrow-in-Furness.
The vehicle was a bus, and she was a female. The bus is an AEC Regal "T Class" London Country Area bus. The bus is painted in the common red livery of buses in the United Kingdom, mostly famously used by London Transport. Her number plate read JXC288.
"Hello there." Madeline called to the bus, who looked over to the two LNER engines. "You new here?" She asked.
"Yes, I am. A man by the name of Mr. Franklin had just bought me from a lone farmer's yard." The bus said to Madeline. "My name is Penny." She introduced herself to the two engines.
"Well, pleasure to meet you, Penny." Shadow greeted. He then noticed that Penny's engine was smoking from the radiator grille on the side, as well as from her exhaust pipe, and there looked to be either coolant or oil leaking from underneath. "Looks like you haven't been running for some time." He commented.
Penny gave a small wheeze. "Well... I have been sitting inside of a barn for over 20 years or so. It's been a bit rough for me." She admitted. "I only got back running about seven days ago. I'm gonna need a major fix-up."
"Well, I hope you get that soon." Madeline said to the bus. She then saw her and Shadow's crews get back in the engine's cabs. "Well, seems like it's time for us to be on our way." With that, the two LNER engines gave their whistles to Penny, and the red bus honked her horn to them.
Later on in the day, Madeline and Shadow have been doing more back-and-forth runs between Barrow and Sodor, catching glimpses of Penny every now and then. Braedey, Liliana, and Austin would also see Penny at some of the station, but it seemed like the red bus was having trouble. It did give the steam engines concerned for their friend.
Down at Marion Station, Braedey was down at one of the sidings to take a breather, while also topping up on water and coal. He's done a few runs now, and he needs some time to cool down. His axles have gotten hot, so Madeline offered to take his place. He thanked her for that, and he thanked her for that. The crimson GWR 4900 locomotive sat in peace down in the siding, now allowing his axles to cool down. But, the peace of the moment was shattered, when he could hear the sound of an engine backfiring, as well as crunching gears, and a vehicle approaching. Braedey looked to the nearby carpark, just as Penny drove in, smoke coming from her engine, her left front tyre flat, and her gearbox crunching and grinding, as she ground to a halt in a cloud of smoke and steam.
"That's it. I'm done for." Penny muttered sadly. "I'm bound for scrap now."
"What happened?" Braedey asked in concern.
"My engine began to give out just down the road, my radiator leaking at the time, as well as my oil. I then hit a pothole, blowing out my tyre." Penny wheezed, her engine cutting out, as her driver headed off to phone for a tow-truck. "And my gearbox was failing, leaving me drastically underpowered."
"That does sound like trouble. But, it can be repaired." Braedey said with hope to Penny.
"That is, if Mr. Franklin still wants me." Penny mumbled in worry, just as the red car of Mr. Franklin's drove up. He watched the man step out of the car, and he made his way over to the broken-down bus. "Sir, I'm so sorry. If you can't keep me because of how old I am, then I understand. But please-"
Mr. Franklin held up a hand. "It's okay, Penny. My family and I have a rule here on the Josephine Railway; 'if we think it can be really useful, it can be repaired'. Myself and my family can get you fixed up; new bodywork, new floors and carpets, new engine, chassis, gearbox, tyres, as well as new interior, and even a brand new coat of paint."
Penny looked on in shock and awe. This man was more than willing to get her back into service, but make her better than new? Tears started to form in her eyes. "I... I don't know what to say." She muttered, then looked to Mr. Franklin. "Thank you, is all I can say."
Mr. Franklin walked up to the red bus, and gently patted her driver's side window. "It's quite alright, dear. Once you're back at 100%, you'll feel like a new bus." He added on.
"Thank you, sir." Penny thanked, just as a tow-truck arrived.
After a few moments, the tow-truck had taken Penny off to the mechanic's ship to get fixed up and back at 100%. Braedey looked to his manager, and he gave a wink, Mr. Franklin showing a thumbs-up to his premier express locomotive, and the man made his way to his car, driving off in the direction Penny was towed away.
Braedey was pleased that his new friend, as well as the other's, was now getting essential repairs and rebuild, so she'll be useful and in service again. Braedey then looked over to see Max shunting some dark red local passenger coaches, similar in build to Annie and Clarabel. Max gave a toot of his horn, and rolled away. Braedey whistled back, then backed down onto his coaches, coupling up to them. After collecting some passengers, Braedey began to head off at a gentle pace down the line.
Later on, the engines have all returned to the sheds. Austin, Max, and Belle were covered in soot and coal dust from the coaling yard, while Diana, Shadow, and Madeline were exhausted, but were happy. Braedey and Liliana were both happy seeing their friends happy as well.
"Everyone." The engines looked to see Mr. Franklin walking up nearby the turntable. "It gives me great pleasure to welcome forth the newest member of the Josephine Railway family." He announced, then held out a hand. "Please welcome... Penny the Country Bus."
A red shape was making its way over to the sheds. A moment later, Penny drove up into view, and stopped just nearby the sheds. Her new paint glistened in the afternoon sun, while her wheels were fresh and look polished. Her windows were all cleaned up and new, and they were tinted to keep the temperature inside her cabin cooler. Her interior was fixed up with brand new seats and upholstery, with running floor lights, as well as seatbelts, and overhead luggage space. Penny also had a brand-new engine, an in-line 6-cylinder that produces about 400hp, so she'll get around at a good pace, as well as a 4-speed automatic gearbox, along with a 4-wheel-drive configuration to give her all the grip she needs.
"Hello, everyone." Penny greeted, tooting her horn.
"See, friend? I told you good things were gonna come your way." Madeline called happily.
"And I am proud of that." Penny smiled.
"Well, welcome to the family." Austin smiled, and Penny revved her engine in delight.
Braedey then noticed something on both sides of Penny. It looked to be a crest. It was a black circle with red lining, as well as a doted green inner circle, and a blue sun. There was writing on it as well, the top part being 'Josephine Railway', the bottom portion saying 'Est. 1972'.
"Sir. What's that crest on Penny's sides?" Braedey asked.
"That will be the railway's official crest and logo." Mr. Franklin announced. "Tomorrow, each of you will be polished up, then have the crest placed upon you all. It's an official marking to show that you are part of the Josephine Railway family."
The engines were delighted. They blew their whistles and honked their horns, Mr. Franklin smiling at how happy his engines were. They were more than happy to be a part of the Josephine Railway, and the family, and the new crest will signify that officially.
Sure enough, all the engines had the railway crest on them: Braedey and Diana on their tenders and sides of their cabs, Austin on both sides of his boiler, with Max having it on both sides of his cab, and Liliana on both sides of her boiler. The engines were pleased to have their crests on, and people could see that in action.
Penny also helped out on the railway. She would race about back and forth, helping people to locations where the engines can't reach, and she even gets them back home if they missed their train. She was praised for her speed, interior, and comfort, and Penny would gush over the praising. But, she would say that if it weren't for Mr. Franklin and his engines, she wouldn't be here in service today.
Penny is a proud member of the Josephine Railway family, and she was happy to be running again.
