"Stay with me," Annabeth whispered as she cradled Reyna's head. If Reyna responded, it was drowned out by the beating of Annabeth's heart. There wasn't many things in life that scared her, but this was one of them. Sirens caused her to look up. "The paramedics are almost here."
Annabeth focused down on Reyna's bloodied and bruised face. Reyna stared up at her with glassy eyes. Annabeth's mind kept jumping to the worst case scenarios. Had Reyna hurt her spine, and was it only being made worse by Annabeth cradling her? How bad was her concussion? Were they past the point of a concussion and at the point of permanent brain damage?
Annabeth knew it only took a split second for a fighting career to end. One wrong move. One wrong injury. One car wreck. Any of those could end a career just as it was starting. Annabeth was so scared that she was watching Reyna's career die before her very eyes.
Reyna suddenly gasped and moved a hand to her side. Annabeth intercepted her hand and slowly started to rub it. Annabeth whispered, "You need to relax. I know it hurts. I know."
As the ambulance stopped near them, Annabeth gently laid Reyna's head on the jacket she had put on the ground. Then, she backed away to give the paramedics room. Annabeth brought her arms to her chest and tried not to shiver. She watched one of the paramedics kneel by Reyna and examine her, asking questions softly.
Reyna said something, but Annabeth figured it was nonsense as the other paramedic turned towards her. He spoke, "I'm going to ask you some questions, ma'am. What is your name?"
"Annabeth Chase. I wasn't involved," Annabeth began. She watched the other paramedic hurry back towards the ambulance. "She called me, and I didn't think to call an ambulance until after I get here. Shit."
"Ma'am, calm down. I just need to ask you a few questions," the paramedic said. Annabeth nodded, but she wanted to scream at herself. Why didn't she call the emergency line when she was driving to the scene? She had seen how bad Reyna's injuries were. Reyna's face had been covered in blood, and there was the fact that she spoke nonsense. "Did you remove her from the car?"
"No," Annabeth answered. "She got out on her own and called me after she was out. I think she was on her feet, but she collapsed while talking to me."
"And, she was the only one involved?" the paramedic asked. Annabeth nodded in confirmation. "Do you know if she has any preexisting injuries or conditions."
"I don't," Annabeth began. "I know she broke her hand not too long ago, and I'm sure she has had a concussion or two in her life."
Annabeth heard another siren and turned her head. She watched a black car stop at the side of the rode, but the sirens didn't stop as another cop car pulled up. Annabeth shivered slightly and glanced up as snow started to fall. The paramedic stepped away and came back with a blanket for her to wrap herself in.
"When she talked, it was absolute nonsense. I couldn't understand it," Annabeth continued. She watched a uniformed officer walk towards them. The officer stood off to the side and seemed to be waiting. "I almost didn't know where she was."
"What matters is you found her," the paramedic commented. He asked Annabeth more questions, but there wasn't much more she could answer. She didn't know much about Reyna, and she had no clue how the wreck happened. When the paramedic was done, he hurried back to Reyna's side and helped his partner place her on a backboard. Then, they placed her on a stretcher
"You don't know what happened?" the uniformed officer asked as he looked at her. Annabeth shook her head and looked at the other car. A woman stepped out of it and seemed to take in the scene. She wore a formal, fancy uniform that was adorned with medals, and her badge hung from around her neck. Was she a police captain?
The police captain walked towards the paramedics. Then, she froze for a few moments as she seemed to notice Reyna. When she started to walk again, she quickened her pace The police captain stopped over the stretcher and seemed to stare down at Reyna. Annabeth frowned as she watched the two. This strange woman gently grabbed Reyna's hand and squeezed it.
The police captain turned and walked away, grabbing her phone. The lights from the cop car illuminated the woman's dark eyes. Her brown eyes seemed to be so dark that Annabeth almost mistook the color as black. Just like Reyna's.
"Ma'am?" the officer asked. Annabeth snapped back to reality and looked at him. "Do you know what happened?"
"No. She called me after the accident," Annabeth explained. She looked back at the car and studied it. The car had slammed into the pole, and since the pole looked like it was leaning forward, Annabeth knew that Reyna was lucky it didn't snap in half and fall. "I'm guessing I can't get her things from the car."
"We won't take the chance," the officer answered. "After we tow the car, we'll collect the things and call for someone to pick it up."
"Can I go to the hospital?" Annabeth asked after a moment. The officer nodded and turned away, speaking into his radio. Annabeth walked towards her car. She focused on Reyna being stretchered into the back of the ambulance. Somehow, this was the easy part.
Annabeth sat in her car and slowly opened her phone. She stared at her contact list, trying to figure out who to call first. Thalia? She was Reyna's girlfriend. Then, again, Nico was her roommate. Hazel and Frank would want to know as well.
Annabeth took a deep breath. She needed to divide and conquer. Annabeth quickly found Lupa's number in her contact list and called. The phone only rang twice before a frantic voice answered, "Annabeth?"
"Reyna was in a car crash," Annabeth said after a few moments, taken aback by how Lupa sounded. There was worry in her voice, before Annabeth had told her the news.
"I know," Lupa said.
"You know," Annabeth repeated in confusion. "Did Reyna call you before me?"
There was silence on the other end for a few moments. Lupa finally spoke, "Which hospital?"
"Murphy's Heart," Annabeth answered after a moment. She was too tired to question Lupa, and it was entirely possible Reyna had called or messaged Lupa in her concussed state while trying to message Annabeth. "Can you call Hazel and Frank? I'll call Nico and Thalia."
"Yes. I'll see you there," Lupa said, and she hung up the phone. Annabeth looked back at her phone and took a deep breath. She called Thalia.
Annabeth laid her head back and watched the ambulance drive away. She swallowed painfully as Thalia picked up, "Thank God. I'm stuck with the two lovebirds, and they cannot get their hands off of each other."
"Thalia," Annabeth began, and she hated how shaky her voice sounded.
"What's wrong?" Thalia asked. "Did something happen to Percy or Sally?"
"Reyna," Annabeth whispered. She tried to swallow the lump in her throat. "She was in a car accident. She's on her way to the hospital now, but Thalia. It's not good. There was so much blood, and she was talking nonsense."
"Hey, it's going to be okay," Thalia interrupted. It sounded like she was trying to be confident, but he voice shook as well. "Reyna is tough as shit. She'll be okay."
"What if she has brain damage, Thalia? She can't fight anymore," Annabeth said. "Why else would she be talking like that?"
"Annabeth, I love you, but you are not helping," Thalia said. Her next sentence was harder to hear. "Reyna was in a car accident. I'm going to the hospital."
"You're right. I'm sorry. Reyna will be fine. It's just the concussion. And shock," Annabeth said with hope in her voice. "She was the only one involved."
Annabeth took a deep breath. It was possible that Reyna had suffered brain damage. Although, it could also be that Reyna's brain had been throttled, which made it hard for her to focus. She probably hit her jaw, which made it difficult to form the words she wanted. Along with being in shock, she probably just went on instinct. Annabeth really hoped she was right.
"Which hospital?" Thalia questioned. Annabeth told her the name of the hospital, and the call was ended before she closed her mouth. Now came the hard part. Annabeth carefully grabbed Reyna's nearly destroyed phone from her pocket.
Annabeth scrolled through Reyna's meager contact list until she found Nico's name. Her finger hovered over the name for a few moments. She finally forced herself to press in on it, and the phone was answered before it could even begin to ring.
"Reyna! I'm so sorry. I-"
"It's Annabeth."
Silence filled the phone call for a few agonizing moments. Nico finally spoke, "What happened to Reyna?"
"Car accident. She hit a pole and is on the way to the hospital," Annabeth answered. "I'm not sure how bad it is, but I know she has a concussion."
"This is my fault," Nico whispered.
"Nico, this can't be your fault. There's been bad weather all this month," Annabeth began. "It was probably just a freak accident."
"I'm the reason Reyna wasn't at home. The reason she was driving," Nico said. It sounded like he was on the verge of crying.
"Nico, calm down. I'm coming to pick you up. I'll bring you to the hospital," Annabeth promised. "It will be okay."
And Annabeth really hoped it would be okay.
