An AU Story Start. Let's not forget some War Criminal characters from the "Juuni Taisen vs Juuni Taisen" stories are there. So, I hope you learn them.

Chapter 7: "The War Veterans who Rebels the Strongest Foe"

=FRIENDSHEEP/ARIES POV=

Back at The Broken Bridge,

Dandylion wasn't expecting their battle at the broken bridge have ended smoothly with the help of this mysterious stranger. Not only we come across face to face with this guy but he insists of making a deal at the riverbank.

I wanted to apprehend and take this guy but this war criminal Dandylion insists to follow him before taking action. With those two sleepy heads beside us, it's only a matter of time to discuss as they try to call out each other's name with honor.

"War Veteran of the Ox Warrior, Trust and Kill, Rounder" The stranger answered, which bothers me if we could trust this guy with his killing motto.

"War Criminal of Leo, Kill in Command, DandyLion"

"War Criminal of Aries, Count and Kill, Friendsheep" I called out my name.

After introducing, the warrior named Rounder clapped his hands with a small laugh. "It's finally nice to meet you once again. Oh dear, It's been a long time to call my warrior's name ever since that war ended"

War ended? What does he mean? Before I asked him, Rounder made a big clap once to give us a serious attention.

"Let's make it brief, I wasn't planning to save you three." He said in a cold tone. The way his personality changes from a friendly guy to a serious warrior gave us a surprised.

Rounder picked his phone and scrolled the screen, showing his smirked expression that he found something good. He let us reveal a picture of two people on the table along with Sir Cancer on their side. Their image tells us those guys were having a tea party in the middle of their meeting.

Dandylion and I glare at Rounder, thinking they could try to harm Sir Cancer but the Man in hat just waved us, remaining compose.

"No need to worry about, your leader's in good hands. My team is no sort of troublemaker to take the champion down."

"Then why do you show us his picture instead of calling him? We wouldn't know if he's alright." I asked

"If I do that, then surely the Mastermind would know where we are." Rounder replied, flipping his phone down back to his pocket. He stared at the sky and continued, "Communications are off when that bastard shows up. Trust me, my team and I were having hard times dealing with them"

"That Mastermind, does it have something to do with a deal you're making?" Dandylion asked. Everytime they mention this Mastermind and that, he feels those guys could be the ones behind those shadowy warriors.

"I believe so." Rounder made a quick answer, which doesn't sound like he cares about it. He snapped his finger and continued, "Anyhow, let's get straight to the point. I've heard from my buddy Waver, you and your team were on a beef battling against those black shadowy assassins hunting you, right?"

"Hmph, that doesn't mean they can beat us." Dandylion nods back, folding his arms.

"Sure right, but what if they were a pawn? That Mastermind would pull the same trick to lure you guys into this mess." Rounder said, he knows those two war criminals don't learn anything about their enemies. He let out his smirk and make a peaceful suggestion. "However, I can offer you something more."

That doesn't sound like a good idea to follow this stranger's advice. This would've been a trap if we go along with this but, he is a War Veteran, he could be one of the members of the Juuni taisen organisation, or perhaps he's willing to help us with the same plan of stopping the war. Dandylion held my right shoulder, giving a glance to hear his suggestion and I gave him a nod back.

"If ever, my own trusted companions will try and watch over you, maybe we could lure the Mastermind and get them together." Rounder said. "Of course, I can tell those answers you want to know. Everything that took place one year ago."

"What are you planning?" I asked, wondering about his scheme. Surely, this warrior knows what we want but trusting him won't be easy for him. I was expecting to hear a false answer like pretending to understand our motives or something, but his answer is quite different from my expectation.

"Capturing the Mastermind who used souls from Honorable warriors. Seeing them as shadowy puppets makes me want to punch that person." Rounder said directly. He offered a hand to us. "Do we call it a truce?"

Just as I hesitate and asked, Dandylion shook his head and rejected his hand, "Not so fast, if we get our protection, what is your offer in return?"

"Simple, I need you and your team to stop stalking this guy." He turned his gaze and pointed at the sleeping Rat Warrior. "That's my condition."

"That's all?" Dandylion and I were confused, thinking if he's serious about this. I tried to elaborate and asked "In other words, you want us to stop hunting Nezumi? That's it?"

"Affirmative, young lady. Is there a problem?" Rounder said.

"..." I shook my head and remained silent. I may lie that I wanted questions about his relationship with Nezumi but, hearing his deal is a bit off.

"I reject." Dandylion quickly replied.

"Excuse me?" Rounder tilted his head in confusion.

I had the same answer as well. It's not because I don't trust that guy, I want to let that Rat warrior answer some questions about the incident from the Archipelago island by his own words.

"We appreciate the offer of helping us but I'm afraid we have to do this on our own. Don't get the right idea, we never wanted to kill the Rat boy. Sir Cancer and I believe he's the key to finding answers about our past, especially those wars going on the other side." Dandylion answered, folding his arms. Seeing his determination makes Rounder fall back but his expression remains calm. "Tell me, young Rounder. What is the meaning of recruiting criminals for protection? And why do you want us to stay away from the Rat boy?"

When hearing more questions from a second leader of War Criminals, Rounder decided to give it a go and he coughed, clearing his throat. He raised three fingers to give a simple reply, "Three answers. First, I want to let you guys survive for someone's sake. I can't afford to let his death be in vain again. Protecting criminals by the veterans will change its code but hey, we're in a peaceful country where no wars involved. I guess it's fine."

"What are the others?" I comment, wondering the two answers he'll give us.

"Well, I just don't like watching grown ups hunting a warrior who wants to stay normal. As a matter of fact, I consider Nezumi as War Veterans like us. You don't underestimate him. He may be lazy and sleepyhead but this guy's have strong guts." Rounder compliment Nezumi like how a proud dad has good faith to their children.

Hearing those answers makes me wonder how capable that Rat Warrior is, despite a weakling teen who can't fight a group of bullies. I wonder if he's trying to lie and cover up to save the teen or not but, I couldn't tell he's lying.

"And Third reason for this deal, it's classified." The moment Rounder answered with a deep voice, he cleared up and pointed us "As a matter of fact, I also wish to know your reason for spying the Rat boy."

I knew he would say that now but, I can't answer it. In fact, it's better to leave it as secret since this War Veteran proves he doesn't hurt us. When I decided not to spill the beans, Dandylion, on the other hand, expressed his thoughts to Rounder.

"Even if the War is over, there are still enemies who dare to take us down and, one of them happens to be that Warrior of the Rat, the winner of the 12th Zodiac War that we missed. Champion warrior or an innocent high school student, he's still one of those meddling organisations. We will consider his existence even if you try to rebel us"

As for the offer of protection, I decided to reject them because I don't want my team to rely on strangers. Kind-hearted people like you would turn against us if you try. Do that offer again and remember that we're enemies in the end." Dandylion replied, looking prideful as always.

I was expecting Rounder to be upset for being declined by his offer but to my surprise, he seems delighted as he clapped his hands in amusement.

"Whoa Interesting." Rounder said cheerfully. "As expected of the War Criminal Leo, you really have a strong sense of justice."

Despite giving compliments, Dandylion remained cautious of this War Veteran, thinking he's using words to get along with them. Rounder even let out his smirk and chuckled, "But a War Criminal still has limits. You guys don't even know the truth."

"What truth?" This guy still thinks he knows our goals. What a narcissist he is.

"Even If I mention, you War Criminal groups are being hunted down by the Mastermind. The fact you end up helping their plan to eliminate the Rat warrior proves you're not in terms with the truth." Rounder rose his head and flipped his hat after seeing their expression. "Despite that, you guys will keep fighting them and their shadows in the end, right?"

We nod, showing our clear answer. If he's really telling the truth, there's no doubt the War Criminal team is in danger. Even so, we're just a suicide group who wants to sacrifice our lives to stop war at all costs. But still, thinking about getting killed by a strange Mastermind is out of topic. We don't want to die in vain.

Rounder stood up and took a gentle bow before replying to us, "The dangers will come to you but with your team, I believe you'll prove it right and I respect that."

The look on his face tells me he's probably disappointed of his expectations falling down but despite that, he didn't fight, nor forcing us to accept his deal. In the end, I don't understand what he's thinking.

Then, Rounder pointed two people sleeping on the green riverbank lawn and he asks us if he could offer them a lift back home. I understand that taking the Unconscious Driver back home is necessary but Nezumi? The Rat Warrior? Our target taking by the War Veteran?

I want to object but Dandylion stepped up and agreed his offer. He knew there was no harm of taking the teen by a fellow dealmaker. Rounder thanked them as he pressed the key switch to turn his car on. Rounder's car was apparently parked at the top of the riverbank, where we sat down and carrying them one by one is an easy task for him.

When we watched the War Veteran taking Nezumi to his car, there was a small crystal symbol in his hood and seeing that logo kinda reminds me. I remember that Little man I met at the Cheese store has the same symbol in his right glove. Maybe those two could be…

What if Rounder is one of those "Old Pals" group that Waver mentioned before?

The moment the car left us alone, Dandylion's phone suddenly rings and he picked it up. His expression lightens up, knowing who the caller is. I heard he nods and accepts it until sixteen seconds later, he end the call and turns his gaze to me.

"Sashitari call us back to hotel and meet up with Sir Cancer. They say he got some leads that can lead the truth"

"I hope it involves with this 'Mastermind'?"

"We'll never know." Dandylion sighed back, expecting it's important.

=RAT/NEZUMI POV=

The moment I took a closer look and found myself in a sofa, I realized I was part of their discussion. The seven warriors are in front, sitting on the table during their meeting.

"But it's his fault! Maybe we should-" The man with the size of a child argues back. He pointed out to me before getting interrupted by a man with a cap who folded his arms.

"Killing the teen to save the world? That's rich coming from you." He said with a sarcastic tone.

"Rounder. You can't possibly be on her side?" the Little man asked.

"Of course I am, I made up my mind. If things go downhill, then I'll fall with him. It doesn't matter about the rules, wars, rebelling your clan and saving the world." The hat man with a robe clenched his fist as he took a glance at me in a serious expression. "It's about 'respect' for fellow warriors. You guys haven't forgotten that he owes us a lot. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't be there! If you're really on their side, I suggest you go back where you came from and be a Hero! Come on, do it!"

When the hat man taunts back, the Little man's face become red with embarrassed as he slams the table. "No way! I don't want to go back! I'm not what I meant to be and I can't deny what you said.. Is there any other way?"

This is getting out of control. First, the chase of the sniper and now, a team argument. I don't want to listen to someone getting broken by objecting they don't want to. So, I raised my hand and brought their attention to me. "Excuse me…" I looked at the eyes of the six warriors who wondered about my intention. "I think there is. I know this situation gets worse if we stay here."

"You-" The Little man reacts back before getting interrupted by the hat guy again.

"Rebelling against the world again? How interesting Nezumi, I didn't expect you would be willing to cooperate with us." The goat horned guy with a Scarf whistled and amazed me.

"World? What do you mean?" I asked, not knowing what fighting against the world brought into this topic.

"What we mean is that the seven of us, rebellions, are proud to have you as a company. Whether you're a coward or not, we'll always listen to your suggestions. After all, you just want to live, right? Like the rest of us." The Hat guy said with a genuine smile.

Hearing this encouragement doesn't make me feel emotionally attached to them but their wise words kept me going forward to live. "I don't understand what you're saying but-" I offered him a hand and the Hat guy allowed as he leaned his hand and shook together. "I hope we can make it alive."

"Agreed, no matter what, we're on your side." The woman beside him answered back.

Seeing how five warriors agree with the Hat guy, the Little man was frustrated and decided to deny his pride and responded back, "Fine! I'll stick with you any longer."

"Great! But somehow guys, I have this feeling" The Hat guy keeps his smile with a joyful and relaxing tone as he clapped once. "That Starting this month, I bet the prophecy will-"

...

"How long are you going to sleep, Nezumi? You know that I can feel your heart beating in this quiet road."

When I heard that familiar voice, I woke up and saw the same guy in my dream. I didn't realize he gave me a lift, heading to my house.

I also took a peek and saw the Man's head facing at the back. The man with a black cap and a fierce warrior, Rounder, was giving me a piggyback ride. He was carrying me like a child on a man's back. Then, he turned to me and smiled that I'm finally awakened.

It took a while for me to know that we're heading to my home. Funny, I forgot that Rounder knows my location because the Manager from the Cheese store told him. I don't mind but aside from that, I wonder what happened after the bullies took me outside.

"It looks like we finally meet again. Man, How was your nine month experience by the way?" Rounder asked.

"I don't know. I can't remember." I answered truthfully.

"Just as I thought." He answered, letting out a sighed but his tone doesn't sound disappointed. "The others are aware of you coming back. You should probably greet them when they see you again. They know how you've been through so much and they always wanted your company to keep you relax"

"Thanks for the offer but I can't." I didn't hesitate to reject his suggestion and continued, "I have school tomorrow."

"Fair enough." Rounder doesn't seem upset about my response. He just gave me small smile and understand my reasons. To think that one of the so-called rebellion warriors would spare me from giving more trouble.

I wonder why Rounder, especially that small little man, Waver looked friendly to a strange boring high school student like me anyways. They always welcome and helped me around in random times. Seeing them like that doesn't actually felt attachment on my heart for some reason but, It's not like I forget them, it's necessary to respect warriors at certain times.

"Thank you by the way" I gave a small whisper to offer gratitude, which Rounder gave me a nod silent response in return.

The Next Day,

Nowadays, the wind is getting cold and walking to that school starts to make my eyes dizzy again. When I opened the classroom door, the students saw that I'm coming by and they immediately looked away again.

For some reason, I felt they were alerted and bothered about me but I don't mind. This is pretty normal anyways. Once I sat on my desk and try to sleep, someone try to interrupt my slumber and I find the transfer student, Meland called me out.

"Good morning Nezumi, about Yesterday… you know.. " Meland tried to give her courage and mentioned something important.

However, I looked at her in a straight face and answered, "Oh, you mean stopping those guys? Thank you by the way but, what about it?"

"Not that! I mean, the fight from Yesterday!" She slammed the table and her alerted voice made the whole classmates look at her, wondering what they're talking about. Meland quickly covered her mouth as she realized what she said, she almost forgot we're in class. The way those students are looking at us right now, it sounds like we're arguing but I don't seem to comprehend yesterday's deal with her.

In fact, I don't remember about fighting. I tried to recall my mind but it doesn't seem helping. So I have to be honest and answer directly. "Sorry Meland-san, I don't remember any promise about fighting. It's best we forget them, okay?"

I thought this would clear that up but it turns out that answer made Meland upset for no reason. Before she tries to make me remember, the Class teacher is already inside and asks his student to make a roll call. Just great, class starts and I'm feeling sleepy again. Meland left without saying anything and she took her seat. At least it's peaceful now but I wonder what is up with her trying to deal with me.

Yesterday's Incident to the War Criminals Side,

The War Criminal, Unsun Sashitari finds Dandylion and Friendsheep on the street and he gives them a ride to the hotel. Once they arrive, they noticed the stone pavement being crumbled like they were struck by a huge magnitude of earthquake. Not only that but the whole area has been covered by ruined pieces and big holes like they were blowing by the bomb.

The hotel they're staying in has been destroyed with broken windows and broken walls. None of them expected their shelter would turn out like this. As for their comrades, eight of them seem fine but half of them got injured. They were gathering in the middle of their destroyed hotel, waiting for the remaining Warriors to arrive. As they noticed the last three to reunite, Dandylion breaks the tension and stares at them.

"What happened?" Dandylion clenched his fist after seeing his comrades were half covered by black ashes. The remaining War Criminals decided not to lie when seeing him being serious.

"While you were away, those shadow warriors found our base and we fought them." The War Criminal Libra, Baron Sue, answered as she looked around the hotel again, "We didn't know there was an ambush. Those enemies brought a bomb and attempt to blow us up."

"But luckily we got saved-" The War Criminal Gemini girl said, ordering her brother to grab a package box and show it to them. "By that strong shield inside the package. Someone put them on our doorways when the bomb ticks at five seconds. We thought we were done for and yet, we survived."

"Somehow, I felt this is not coincidence to bring such a reliable weapon in our hands. There was a symbol in that package and I had a feeling I saw this somewhere before." When they checked the logo from the package once again, Unsun Sashitari kept observing as he thought up of something,

"That package? I got the same one from the battle against that Sniper Shadow." Unsun Sashitari muttered as he recalled his fight at high buildings, "That stun gun weapon made me win against that shadow warrior, I wonder if that person sending those package was willing to help us."

Baron Sue turned to Dandylion and asked, "Speaking of that, did something happened to you? Calling Unsun Sashitari an hour ago feels like you guys went in the same trouble as ours, care to explain?"

Before Dandylion explained, he spots Sir Cancer, walking on the way to them. When the true leader reunites with them, he started to tell everything. Starting from the time they fought against a Sniper Warrior and a muscle shadowy warrior at the Broken bridge to the time they met a War Veteran named Rounder and rejecting his offer. He also tells them about the identities of those Shadow Warriors, the Muscular warrior announcing themselves as the Ox Warrior from the Eight Zodiac War whereas Unsun Sashitari adds a Sniper Warrior being called as Chicken Warrior from the Eight Zodiac War.

Hearing those warrior titles changes Sir Cancer's expression. He felt like his blood got boiled and his mind got fired up for thinking about those previous warriors he fought long time ago and how they fought against his team right now. Now that he learned their battle, Sir Cancer clenched his fist and wondered who is this Mastermind that deals with them. He turns his head to Dandylion and Friendsheep, making a bittersweet smile.

"I see. It must be tough for you three." He nods back and turns to his comrades who got involved inside the hotel, "And to you guys. Well done for surviving so far while I'm away. I'm proud you did your job well." His team nods in reply, thanking their leader for the compliments. Sir Cancer coughed back as he went to the real discussion. "Now that the circumstances has change, I should probably tell you that I'm halfway lead to the answer we're looking for." Everyone widened their eyes to his news as they are waiting for him to continue, "Before that, you have to listen to the time I met four War Veterans by that invitation letter."

"No way.. Four War Veterans? By yourself?" Friendsheep asked, amazed at her leader's action. Sir Cancer nodded, looking at his team waiting to his story about those War Veterans.

War Veterans are old soldiers who experience a great struggle of surviving a life of war. They may be retired warriors but that doesn't mean they're old enough to fight. In fact, with great experience and responsibility, they are far more courageous and experienced people who can fight any warriors.

Unlike War Criminals, everyone believes they're regarded as heroes from past generations. Yet, today's War Veterans are smart but untrustworthy. It appears they're working in the Juuni Taisen organisation and they still fought wars like never before. Each of them have different roles in battling against their enemies.

So far, Sir Cancer has only seen four War Veterans while Friendsheep and Dandylion met one and rejected his offer. All war criminals who got involved inside this hotel had apparently seen one placing the carriage but they got run away and couldn't chase them.

Sir Cancer discussed with them about how he used peace negotiations between fellow warriors. He didn't expect they would chat smoothly and tell how they gathered their own team. It seems the reason the War Veterans group themselves is because of the aftermath of the twelfth zodiac war. He knew they had something to deal with the winner of the zodiac war, the Rat Warrior.

Still, they mentioned that the aftermath of the zodiac war has gotten worse. Most of the War Veteran's relatives got involved and half of them were killed with no honour. The organisation also planned to repeat the twelfth zodiac war and forget the previous tournament, which means that the last fight with the Rat Warrior being the winner will be removed from memory and replaced with the new one. It's like those eleventh warriors are not worthy to mention and forgettable like disposable toys. If they repeat the remake of twelfth zodiac war, the Rat Warrior's survival actions will be fully meaningless.

Even the VIPs and high rank people bet the Rat Warrior to participate in the remake zodiac war and let him suffer because they were not happy with the result of no one betting him. They were not happy with his existence despite the zodiac war playing fair. When the Zodiac clans heard that proposal, half of them agreed while the others did not because they're not following their traditions.

With two sides split, the only Zodiac clans who wanted to stop the Remake of twelfth zodiac war are Ox, Horse, Monkey and Dog. The rest of Zodiac clans sided with the organisations because they didn't care about sending their warriors to fight, not even caring about the Twelfth champion.

When the War between Zodiac clans clashed, some War Veterans struggled to stop them and eventually, they also learned there was a mastermind behind this mess. The one who proposed the organisation to remake the twelfth war. The one who loves watching warriors suffer and hunting both War Criminal Veterans and heroes down.

With the chaotic mess leading on, there was no hope left for this world to continue as long as wars exist. Just as the mastermind got the upperhand on the remaining warriors, someone broke their plans and saved a few, giving them a choice that could change their fate.

He may not be aware of the war going on outside, nor knowing the Mastermind's identity, it was just coincidence he met the remaining War Veterans and helped them out.

The Rat Warrior, Nezumi. An ordinary high school teen who wants to survive both his high school student and a life of a soldier. Everyone would underestimate his appearance being the weakest warrior but the remaining War Veterans saw how he's capable of turning things upside down and broke the same loop of fate of the warriors.

Thanks to him, the War Veterans got the Mastermind's plan and countered them and thanks to his cooperation, they survived. They made a new team using different code names and almost found a new hope to stop this repeated war until, when spring came forth, Nezumi suddenly disappeared.

No one knows where he went but the War Veterans realized the Rat warrior is still alive somewhere they can't reach. The story with him gone in nine months is getting closer but it hasn't continued.

For some reason, those War Veterans wanted answers for their reason to keep their team alive and Sir Cancer made a simple and real answer that wanted from the very beginning, "We just want to stop Wars from going on. That's all."

With that answer, Sir Cancer wasn't surprised the three War Veterans were touched by his motives. Then, they offered a handshake and a chance to ally along with his team to work together.

"So how is it? Did you take it?" The twelve War Criminals wondered if their leader accepted their offer as they waited for his next answer.

"I should've known he would take it. I guess being a leader has hard choices to help our team" Dandylion sighed back, thinking Sir Cancer accept them "I knew this would happen"

"I reject them, of course" Sir Cancer's umbrella stomps hardly that brought everyone's attention. "Who do you think we are? We're Zodiac War Criminals who can solve problems without the need of veteran warriors. We don't need strangers to guide us. We don't need strong warriors to protect us. We have ourselves. If someone's messing at us, we can deal with them ourselves!"

Everyone felt goosebumps when they listened to his last sentence from his deep voice. He wasn't joking when negotiating with them deeply but most of them agreed with his reasons to reject their offer.

War Criminals can atone their sins without finding a hero to save them. They have each other's back to protect themselves. It wasn't necessary to get protection from someone else as long as they worked together.

=NO POV=

From Nowhere,

What After dealing with War Criminals and taking Nezumi home, the rebellion warrior went to their secret headquarters and met up with five people.

Those people are the current War Veterans who made it in time and saving Sir Cancer's life from getting hunted. Rounder also made a successful attempt of helping three War Criminals and dealing two of them. He looked at them with their weary eyes, waiting for the news.

"How is it? How's the meeting?" The little man Waver breaks the silence, desperate to find the result. "Is it success? Or… fail?"

The War Veterans have other reasons to save the War criminals, they wanted to make a deal with them and worked things out for the team. The five of them attempted to discuss with Sir Cancer but with Rounder alone, they knew he was the best of making contracts and deals. Among them, Rounder was good at negotiations and he volunteer to try and recruit those guys. Now that they reunite with his friends, it's time to say it out loud.

"The negotiation's success guys! We did it!" Rounder said with a proud smirk.

He offered a Hi five gesture and only Waver, the enthusiastic woman and the man with horns did it.

"So let me get this straight" Eleventh interrupt their victory mood as he questioned his team, "Dealing with those War Criminals and rejecting our offer is an okay to us? Care to tell me what sort of plan is this?"

"Simple, Muscle-head. We warn those former War Criminals and make them learn about this Mastermind. Maybe they could find it sooner than we are."

"Whoever it is, I'll be the one to take down that Mastermind!" The man with horns declared.

Sly, Smart and Observant War Veteran who negotiates anyone and acts like a joker with his calm poker face. With his eyes closed, no one will know his reactions and true goals. He likes wearing different hats and watching humans. He was friends with the Natural Born Slayer, Ushii and acts like a strategist to use his mind and solve problems during and after war battles.
