"So," Reyna began as she sat on the counter in Kinzie's kitchen. Her older sister stopped and gave her a look. "What?"
"Kinzie isn't going to like you sitting on the counter," Hylla commented.
"It's really comfortable," Reyna began. Hylla raised an eyebrow. Reyna sighed. "Alright. Just because Kinzie wouldn't like it."
Reyna hopped off the counter and winced as pain shot through her sore body. Hylla opened the fridge, "Want a soda or water?"
"Just a soda," Reyna groaned. Hylla grabbed a can and tossed it to her. Reyna caught it and leaned against the counter. They were waiting for Kinzie to come over with food. "Thanks."
"Speaking of Kinzie, she wants to know what the date and time are for your fight, so we can be there to support you," Hylla explained. Reyna looked at her older sister, and Hylla just shrugged. "I told you I would be there for your fights, and while I'm not super excited to watch you get punched in the face, I do want to be there to support you."
"It means a lot, Hylla. Thank you," Reyna said. Hylla smiled at her. "I can get you guys great seats, and if you want to come backstage..."
Hylla didn't answer, and her lips pressed together. Reyna frowned at the reaction, and she heard the front door open. Reyna turned to look at the front door as Kinzie walked in. Hylla rushed forward to help her.
"Hey, babe," Kinzie greeted as she pecked Hylla on the lips. Hylla smiled as she helped Kinzie carry the bags to the counter.
"Hey gorgeous," Hylla returned as she kissed Kinzie again. Kinzie looked at Reyna.
"How are you doing, Reyna?" Kinzie asked.
"I'm good," Reyna replied. "I hope you don't mind me visiting."
"It was Kinzie's idea," Hylla supplied. Reyna smiled at her soon to be sister in law. Kinzie smiled back. Hylla grabbed the bags of food and started to set it out.
"I'm going to go change, but feel free to eat," Kinzie said as she looked at Reyna.
Reyna nodded, and Kinzie walked away. After a moment, Reyna followed her and spoke, "Hey, Kinzie. This is really... I don't know. Weird. I don't know. But, thank you. For being there for Hylla. Through all this. I know I was a shitty sister, but you were always there for her."
"You're not a terrible sister," Kinzie returned gently. She smiled at Reyna. "You two were just teenagers in a screwed up world with a bunch of your own issues. What matters now is that you two are close again, so stop beating yourself up."
Reyna nodded and felt tears sting her eyes. She blinked a few times, "Thank you."
"You're welcome," Kinzie smiled. Reyna retreated to the kitchen to see Hylla setting out a bucket of fried chicken along with sides. Reyna helped her take the lids off of them. The two sisters were in a comfortable silence as they set out the food and grabbed a plate.
Reyna made herself a plate but didn't eat until Kinzie walked to the table wearing sweats and a tank top. Kinzie made a plate and sat across from her. Hylla sat near Reyna. The three of them started to eat, and Reyna glanced at Kinzie, "How was your day? At work?"
"It was good. Other than my boss being, well, my boss," Kinzie answered. Reyna nodded.
"What did he do?" Reyna asked.
"He's just sexist, can't make up his mind, and blames me for all of his problems," Kinzie explained. She rolled her eyes. "Plus the homophobia. I'm surprised he hasn't tried to fire me, but I think his wife stops him."
"I'm sorry," Reyna began. Kinzie shrugged.
"I almost punched him before," Hylla commented. Kinzie gave her a look, and Hylla chuckled.
"So, that reminds me," Reyna began as she put her fried chicken back on her plate. "Lupa is getting inducted into the hall of fame for the Olympic League. Everyone in the gym has two guests to bring. It's in Rome, and I wanted to invite you guys. If you can take the time off."
"I would love that," Kinzie answered immediately. Reyna smiled. Kinzie turned her head and looked at Hylla, who didn't offer an answer. "Something wrong babe?"
"I just can't go to a stupid event for the bitch who knew our mother but didn't fucking tell us!" Hylla snapped. She took a deep breath and then looked down. Kinzie gave her a look.
"I'm pissed too," Reyna confessed. "But, it would be dumb to pass up this opportunity. I have to go anyway. I'm giving a speech for Lupa."
That was clearly the wrong thing to say as Hylla's eyes narrowed. Hylla spoke through gritted teeth, "Why?"
"Well, she doesn't have a rival, and-"
"She knew our mother," Hylla interrupted. "For years. And, she didn't say a damn word to you about it."
"Hylla," Kinzie cut-in. "It's not right to yell at your sister about it."
"Hylla has every right to be pissed," Reyna excused. "Lupa knew our mother since they were teenagers. She hid it from me until she slipped up and told me. Lupa is my mentor and trainer. Nothing more."
Even as the words left Reyna's mouth, she knew how hollow it was. Kinzie and Hylla clearly saw through the lie, and it seemed to agitate Hylla more. Was she mad at Reyna? Or Lupa? Both?
"Lupa the fighter is a great inspiration to me," Reyna continued. Emotions felt like they were clogging her throat, making it hard to speak. "Lupa the person..."
"Reyna," Hylla said softly as her shoulders slowly relaxed. She gently grabbed Reyna's forearm. "If you need to talk about it."
"I know," Reyna said. Hylla sighed and looked at Kinzie then Reyna.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't be acting like that," Hylla apologized. "It's a nice, no, amazing gift after all."
Silence filled the room, and Reyna focused on her food. Kinzie broke the silence, "Speaking of questions, we have something to ask you."
"I didn't do it," Reyna began as she tried to lighten the mood. Kinzie smiled.
"We don't have a large circle of friends," Kinzie began. "Or family really. We want to do a small non-traditional wedding. Mostly because Hylla can't handle crowds."
"It was one time," Hylla muttered as her face turned red.
"And you were very cute as you passed out," Kinzie reminisced. Reyna raised an eyebrow. "Hylla and I went to a concert, and she got overwhelmed by all the people there. She passed out."
"I didn't drink enough water," Hylla protested. Kinzie chuckled, and Hylla looked at Reyna. "Anyway, we want to ask you to be our maid of honor."
Reyna stared at both of them in shock, "A...are you sure?"
"Of course, silly. You're my sister," Hylla said lovingly, giving Reyna a genuine smile. Reyna smiled back.
"There isn't anyone else that we would want," Kinzie added.
"I... thank you," Reyna said sincerely. She stared at the table and swallowed painfully. "I don't know what to say."
"Well, I hope you say yes," Hylla commented.
"You know what I meant," Reyna replied as her face heated up. Hylla smirked, and Reyna looked down. "Thank you. Both of you. This really means a lot."
"We know," Kinzie said with a smile. Reyna couldn't meet their eyes. She had been a terrible sister to Hylla, and it meant so much for them to ask her to do this. It made her feel better. Like she wasn't the worst sister in the world.
"When is the wedding?" Reyna asked.
"We hadn't decided," Hylla answered with a shrug.
"If Rome is still on the table, we could make that a honeymoon," Kinzie suggested. "So, we have the wedding before then?"
"I'm surprised you're not getting hitched," Reyna commented as she went back to eating the fried chicken.
"Hylla wanted to," Kinzie explained, looking over and smiling at her. "But, I always wanted a more traditional wedding, so we found a compromise."
A loving smile bloomed on Hylla's face, and she kissed Kinzie. A smile split Reyna's face as she watched. The two loved each other so much. They treated each other right.
"Thank you for the free honeymoon," Hylla said as she looked at Reyna. "I'm still pissed at Lupa, but you're right. This is an amazing opportunity for a honeymoon, and it's mostly free."
"Completely free," Reyna corrected. "I'm paying for any restaurants you guys go to. Nico and I will probably tag along too when he's not with his boyfriend."
"Thank you, Reyna," Hylla expressed. She stood and pulled Reyna into a tight hug. "I love you, Reyna."
"I love you too," Reyna said. She hugged Hylla back and closed her eyes. "Hey, Hylla. Do you think you could give me relationship advice?"
"Relationship advice?" Hylla repeated with a small hum.
"Yeah. I... nevermind," Reyna declined. "It's just a silly crush."
"It might be more than that," Kinzie chimed in.
"Maybe," Reyna shrugged as she focused back on the food. "It's probably nothing. And, if you guys are getting married soon, you better start planning. Unless you plan on winging it."
"Probably," Hylla admitted. Kinzie gently slapped her arm, and Hylla winced. "Hey! We'll figure it out."
"I want it to be a special day," Kinzie said resolutely.
"I know," Hylla responded as she raised her hands. "I'm going to make it special. I promise."
"Good."
