Annabeth would be the first to admit that she was competitive. She didn't like to lose. Not just in her career but also board games and even video games. Which always made Percy upset that she could grab any game and do a decent job at it, if not surpass him. Except for shooters. He had her number there.
Her competitiveness was probably part of the reason why she was such a good fighter. She wanted to beat everyone around her. Especially now. Annabeth focused her gaze above her and frowned. Despite her best efforts, Reyna was still ahead of her.
The day had been great so far. It started with Annabeth picking Reyna up that morning at ten sharp. They went to a museum, and Annabeth wasn't sure what she expected. With Percy, he usually clung to her side and did his best to look interested.
Percy would ask a few questions to try and feign interest, but he would always go back to looking at his phone. He did try to chime in with jokes at times. Annabeth appreciated the effort. It was different with Reyna, though. While Percy followed Annabeth around and stayed close, Reyna drifted off and actually seemed interested in the different displays.
Annabeth remembered the small library that Reyna had at her place. There were all kinds of books about Roman history and culture. Nico did call her a nerd, but Annabeth figured it had been decoration. That wasn't the case as Reyna focused on displays about the Roman army and conquests.
When Annabeth had been looking at architecture from the Persian era, Reyna joined her side and asked her about it. Annabeth got a little lost in the explanation, giving more facts and details than she needed to. It showed on Reyna's face.
Sorry. I just love architecture. It was my major actually.
That's actually really cool. Have you tried designing anything of your own?
Not yet. I've just been focusing on my career in fighting. I sketch in my free time, but no one would hire me without any kind of experience. It was more of a backup career if fighting didn't work out. And to appease my dad.
But, you still enjoy it?
I love it.
I guess it's not really a backup career, then. You were able to pursue two careers that you wanted to.
Yeah. I guess. What about you? Ever have a career you were eyeing?
The only response that Reyna had given her was a shrug, and she went back to asking Annabeth about the different terms involved with architecture and looking more and more lost as it was explained to her. They were almost late to the movie, and when they got there, Annabeth apologized for the generic action film; it was Percy's pick.
Reyna promised it was fine, and she paid for their popcorn and drinks. Reyna also got an unhealthy amount of candy, but Annabeth couldn't say much because she got a big bag of gummy worms. And even ate some of Reyna's candy.
The movie hadn't been terrible, and Annabeth enjoyed the chance to turn her brain off and just relax. Reyna seemed to enjoy the movie as well. Or she just had enough manners not to check her phone? After the movie, they got a quick hotdog from a street vendor.
They also got stopped by a few teenagers who wanted their pictures. It also surprised Annabeth that people would see her in the street and recognize her, especially since neither of them was wearing their wolves' jackets.
After the hotdog, they made their way to a rock climbing place. Which lead Annabeth to where she was now: losing to Reyna. Annabeth had done this course a few times with Percy, and it was a long climb to the top. She was worried that Reyna would have issues as they got to the top, but the woman made her way up like a squirrel on a tree.
They made it to the stop with Reyna beating Annabeth by only a few seconds. She pressed the buzzer and looked at Annabeth with a grin on her face. Annabeth made it next to her, "Cheater."
"We started at the same time," Reyna retorted with a smirk still on her face. Annabeth huffed and looked around. There was a small ladder near the top that they would climb on and make it to a view that overlooked the city.
"Still cheated," Annabeth repeated as she grabbed the ladder. Reyna slowly did as well, and the two climbed to the top. Two employees met them and helped them unclip their harnesses. "I didn't know that you were such a good climber."
"Had to be," Reyna exhaled as she caught her breath. She followed Annabeth towards the walkway. With the setting sun, it was absolutely beautiful. It illuminated the buildings. Stars were peeking out from their shroud.
"How come?" Annabeth asked. Reyna stared out at the skyline. It was quiet for a few moments.
"That's how we got away from our father," Reyna finally revealed. "When he had his episodes, he would lock all the doors that led outside. He thought we were going to be attacked, but if he saw Hylla or I, he thought we were intruders."
Reyna closed her eyes, "He didn't take kindly to intruders. I made the mistake once; never again. So instead of hiding in the closet or trying to avoid him like a damn monster in a horror game, we would scale the outside of our villa and hang out on the roof."
"I can't imagine," Annabeth began.
"It sucked," Reyna said with a shrug. She looked at Annabeth before focusing back on the skyline. Annabeth wanted to add more to the conversation. Instead, she stood by Reyna and just enjoyed the view. As the sun started to set, Reyna cleared her throat. "So, how do we get down? I'm kind of hungry."
"There's a stairwell or elevator," Annabeth replied. Reyna nodded. The two of them made their way downstairs and turned in their gear. Then, they made their way to Annabeth's car.
Annabeth wasn't sure what they were going to talk about when they were outside of the gym. At least anything that didn't involve the gym. Conversation came surprisingly easy, though. Reyna had asked about Percy and Estelle, and Annabeth asked about Hylla. She learned that Hylla was engaged and having her wedding soon.
And that Reyna was bringing Nico as a plus one. Reyna asked more about Annabeth's brothers, particularly about their studies, which made Annabeth realize she had forgotten that Reyna and her brothers clicked well during Christmas.
As they made it to the restaurant, Annabeth had a small smile on her face. The day was going great. A lot better than she was expecting really. They sat down, and Reyna looked at the menu. Her eyes flickered back up to Annabeth.
"You and Percy do this every month?" Reyna asked.
"Yeah," Annabeth answered. "It's how he reminds me to come back up for air. To just relax."
"What started it?" Reyna questioned.
"I was taking a bunch of AP classes in high school plus after school activities. Plus I had to play babysitter for my brothers. There was so much weight on my shoulders, and I let it get to me. Percy finally dragged me out for a day of no studying and no work. We kept the tradition up."
"That's cool," Reyna responded with a small smile. She looked back at the menu. "About your question earlier. There is a career that I wanted to do as a kid. Even more so as an adult."
"More than just fighting?" Annabeth asked. Reyna nodded. "What was it?"
"I wanted to be a lawyer," Reyna answered. A blush darkened her cheeks. "I don't know. It's kind of dumb. I thought that I could become a lawyer and help out troubled kids. Help set them up and get them out of the crime cycle they got dragged into."
"I don't think that's dumb," Annabeth stated. "Why didn't you go for it?"
"No money," Reyna answered with a shrug. "My grades were good but not good enough to get a scholarship at a good college. Plus I wanted to focus on my fighting career. I knew I was good at it, and I figured no one would want to hire a lawyer who got her brain rattled around for a living. Now, I'm sure I would suck at it. College isn't my thing."
"You should give it a try," Annabeth suggested. Reyna shook her head.
"It's too late now," Reyna declined. "That's, what, a four-year degree? Six years? I really don't have time for it with my career. It's a full time commitment. Plus, I have a criminal record."
"Which won't stop you," Annabeth said. Reyna shrugged. "Just think about looking into it. Or maybe something like therapy for kids. You did really great with Ian."
"Maybe," Reyna said. Her gaze looked back at the menu again. "Should we get an appetizer?"
"I love the cheesesticks."
"A woman after my own heart," Reyna teased. "I'm paying for dinner as well. No arguments. Since you paid for everything else."
"Alright."
"And Annabeth? Thank you for today. It was really great."
"Thanks for coming. I had a lot of fun," Annabeth said. Reyna smiled at her. "Now, the real question is if we should get dessert?"
