Judy returned home and left that small case on her desk. She stared at it with uncertainty. Her thoughts were never ending, was she even allowed to have such a gun in her possession? There were so many thoughts that kept cycling around. Just an endless stream of irrational concerns. 'Would it cause issues for my employment? Maybe it would even get me arrested or connected to those events.' She wiped her eyes and became even more uncertain about the case. She stood up and started pacing around the room. Her eyes wandered over all 4 corners of the room, trying to drag her attention away from the small case. She hated how that was the last gift that was given from her 'previous life'. Finally she gave up in pretending that it wasn't there and walked up to it.
She opened the small case up after careful deliberation and was relieved to see a small not on top of those guns. She stared at it for a few seconds, unsure what it could be. She sighed, picked up the note and flipped it over. It read: 'My sweet serenade, I hope this finds you well and I just wanted to say that I know what you're thinking and no, these pistols aren't illegal, they are registered into your name and still have their serial numbers. Okay, maybe I lied about them not being illegal, they are machine guns so then they can be a little problematic but I trust your better judgement. From: your favourite fox.;)' Judy chuckled a little at that and gently placed the note beside the small black case. She then looked at the two Glock 18s in the case, both of which were fully kitted out as she was used to them, just without the fold out stocks. Judy grabbed the grips and removed them gently from their holsters. She smirked as she pointed the two of them at the nearby wall, while seeing if the sights roughly line up. She couldn't confirm truly if it was okay but trusted that it was, due to who sent it.
She placed a holster in her waist and kept it hidden under her shirt. Just as she was about to leave, her phone started to ring. She glanced at her phone, and was surprised to see a number she didn't recognise. Although, it wasn't a scam number. This piqued Judy's interest as she answered the phone. "Hello, who is this?"
"Hey, Judy, you gave me your number remember? It's me Wolford." Judy heard that and rolled her eyes, mentally facepalming herself for forgetting.
"Hi, what brings you to call me?" Judy asked, unsure of whether she should be scared or not.
"Well, I've gotten the message that about an hour ago, you've left the hospital with two functioning arms, so I was wondering if..."
Judy cut him off immediately as she heard that. "Two things, one. You were keeping tabs on me? How dare you? Why? I can't be trusted even though I saved your life? Two, you'll give me a recommendation for the training programme? Really?" As her points changed, her tone also changed. It went from a slightly annoyed to an enthusiastic starstruck voice.
Wolford remained silent for a couple seconds, processing the shift in her emotions. She then heard a sigh from the other side. "One, you are somehow related to the most dangerous mammal on this planet so maybe keeping up with you would reveal him and you were under my care when you went into a dangerous area with a broken arm, two, yes, I would, you proved yourself capable even with a broken arm." That brought a smile to Judy's muzzle. She then looked at the case. 'You knew this would happen, sly fox.'
"So, I agree, what then?"
"We could go to the recruitment facility now, if you prove yourself and have the recommendation, it is possible to circumvent the training process. If you fail that, you would be placed in the first available timeslot. Considering the time, you would be placed into the one in January."
Judy smiled as she heard that, it was like music to her. "When should we go?"
"You think both your arms are ready?"
Judy paused for a second as she tried a one arm push up with her weaker arm. "Yeah, I think it's good."
"Then I'll meet you at the park in ten."
"Cool, see ya there. Bye." Judy hung up the phone, running to the park. She knew the window was closed as she hadn't got around to opening it. She locked her apartment and jumped down the stairs, landing quietly on her hind paws.
She pushed through the rotating door and accidentally tripped onto the pavement. She grunted as she landed on the ground. Her arms were completely extended and she buried her head between her shoulders in shame. Her position was quite cartoonish and a few bystanders tried to stifle their laughter to no avail. One mammal crouched down and helped her up. She didn't look up and they didn't speak. All of a sudden, from a different angle, someone else spoke. "Excuse me sir, the poor doe has fallen, this doesn't make her an easy target."
"Fortunately, I'm not here to target, only walking past and decided TO BE THE ONLY UPSTANDING CITIZEN AROUND!" Judy recognised that voice and instantly raised her head to look at who was trying to help.
There he was, the fox that always tries to hide from everyone and everything, at least in her eyes. She quickly glanced to see what he looked like and in that split second realised. "Nick, what are you doing here?" She then turned onto her back.
"I was passing by and noticed you fell." He calmly stated, flipping back to the rabbit in question. "Where are you in such a rush to?"
"Meeting someone in the park?" Nick just rolled his eyes when he heard that, knowing exactly what is happening. "This wouldn't be to do with you furthering your career?"
The mammal from before got closer and started to shout. "You leave the poor bunny alone." Both Judy and Nick turned their head towards the mammal and were both visibly annoyed.
"You can leave now. YOU can leave the 'poor bunny' alone. It is you who is annoying me. You don't even know what he is to me. He is a friend and since he is a lawyer, might be working with me. Now if you don't mind, leave." Judy was clearly pissed and spewed venom towards the so called 'hero' of this event.
"Judy, calm down."
"NO. I won't calm down. How is it that just because you are a fox that you should be hurled abuse, you shouldn't have friends, that you always have ulterior motives no matter what you do?" Judy stood up mid rant. "How do you not stand up for yourself?" She then turned to the little crowd around her. "And how are all of you just perpetuating this."
Nick chuckled. "You know what pattern recognition is, right?" Judy nodded. "So, if you see multiple of the same species do the same thing, seems like a pattern, no?" He rubbed her cheek. "If another fox scratched your cheek, what would you think? Seems like a pattern, no?" He scattered his sight and looked up while sighing. "Now, either you would be scared for your cheek, or, which it already happened to you, don't think I didn't notice, you start getting scared of foxes?" He looked back into Judy's eyes. "Then what do you think happens when it repeats and everyone sees it until the people that see it are gone and only those that heard about it are left and the perpetuate it for no reason? It's how society works, it's how we learned to evolve. It's only recently that we started being more intertwined, for better or for worse." He smiled gently. "It's not the fault of the individual." He stands back up and offers his paw to help Judy up.
She just shook her head. "Doesn't mean its right."
"That's a question of morality. You know my moral compass." The mammal from before still stood there silently. "You can go now." Nick calmly stated with a wink and a smile. "You must have better things to do." The mammal nodded and walked away.
Judy patted down her jumper to remove the dust. "Shame the ground isn't that clean."
Nick observed Judy. "You don't have one of your gifts?" He had a quizzical look on his muzzle.
Judy shook her head. "Too early for me, besides..." She started walking over to the park. "I'm a civilian."
Nick shook his head and started walking in the other direction. "Have a good day, and consider a better apartment." He pointed gently to the front door. "This is well overpriced." He then faded into the crowd.
Judy shook her head and turned back towards the park, where she knew she had to meet someone. She zipped up her jacket and made sure all her belongings were there. She was relieved to know that everything was fine and in its place. Then there was another thing she found in her waistband. "You sly fox." With this renewed confidence, she began to sprint again. She avoided every mammal, hoping that her piece wouldn't be accidentally revealed.
She finally got to the entrance of the park and noticed that it was quite empty. She wandered around, not knowing where the law enforcing wolf was. She meandered along the given paths and observed what was happening about. Due to it being the middle of the school term, there weren't any kits playing, instead it was mostly adults either jogging for their health or sitting on benches to enjoy nature.
All of a sudden a car pulled up. Judy turned towards it and saw a police cruiser on the curb with a familiar wolf stepping out. However, with that wolf also a smaller cub wolf stepped out. Judy saw Wolford pick up the cub and walked into the park. Both of them were smiling and Judy faintly heard the pup laughing. She smiled and let a small 'aww' out unintentionally. She got up and started walking towards the two as she noticed that the police cruiser left.
"Hey, Wolford, what's up? You wanted to meet up, right?"
Wolford turned around and smiled. "Yeah, but I also had to take of my little Felix." As he said that, he patted the wolf in his arm on the head. "We'll talk in a second." He placed down his cub and scratched his head. "Run about and give us a second." Felix nodded and ran to the playground. Michael stood back up and turned back to Judy, losing his smile. "So, you wanna be an officer of the law?" Judy nodded eagerly, to which Wolford shook his head lightly. "As much as you've shown that you are capable in a fight, are you police material?"
"I was born to ensure justice to all." Judy rapidly responded not thinking what she was saying. "What I'm saying is that, all will be protected and ser-"
Wolford raised a paw in boredom and rolled his eyes. "I get it, you don't need to repeat common lines."He then stared into her eyes. "Why do you want to be a cop? Why endure the slew of hate and abuse in a crime-infested city like this? Why take the extreme risk that it gives you?"
Judy sat there, thinking what to say. "I … don't know, since I was a kit, I just wanted to help others, even if it meant I'll be hurt. Sure, I got ridiculed and ostracised but I wasn't gonna let that stop me. I just always wanted to make the world a better place."
He crouched down to her level. "We all want to make the world a better place. But there is an issue with that..." Wolford paused, knowing that what he was about to say was the painful truth. Judy turned her head slightly askew and gave a look of confusion. "We lose sight of it too easily, not even fixated on the job, just..." He sighed lightly, "Why do you think so many cops are corrupt here? They have no fursonal stake in this, no real underlying reason to be a cop." He put his paw on Judy's shoulder. "What's yours? What will keep you there?"
Judy stared down to the ground, deep in thought. "I... don't... know... what my reason is." Her tone was much softer, she was clearly distraught. She raised her head. "So... that's it huh?" She forced a smile out. "You're saying even if I was to get in, I'll be no better than the rest of them?"
"It's very likely, as much as I hate to admit it. I've watched angels fall into temptations grasp." Wolford stood back up and started to walk over to his cub. "Judy, we'll discuss this later, I still would need to write a recommendation anyways."
"What's your reason?" Judy asked almost immediately. "Why don't you get caught in temptation's grasp as you put it?"
"You know my brother, right? He's the reason why. As much as I'd love to say it's to protect the mammals of this city, my family, to make sure to let my brother grow up in a city that is better than mine, it's him." Wolford's back was turned to Judy but she heard every word. "It's me hoping that I can still save him before he gets himself killed. If I get down to his level, then what's the point. That's my reason."
"To prove a point, that's it."
"Maybe that's all some need." He continued walking away. "Enjoy your life as a civilian, and be careful with him."
"We'll talk later?"
"Yeah. We definitely will." Wolford finally walked away.
Judy started to walk in a random direction and go on a random stroll around Savannah Central. It was a spirit-finding adventure for her, to find her grand reason.
A couple hours later.
She wandered and meandered so far that she had no idea where she was now, but didn't care, she could figure out how to get home later. She was constantly looking around and noticed a sign that read: "Welcome to Happytown." but everything about it at this point was anything but. The paint was stripping off, the colours were faded or covered with dirt, the metal itself was barely holding itself together. She then looked past the sign as she zipped up her hoodie and threw her hood up. She cautiously moved along the road, trying to create eye-contact with no-one.
What she did see though was causing her soul to scream in agony. Buildings with poor foundational support that could possibly collapse at any given moment. However it seemed that staying in any of them would be a luxury, considering the mass amount of mammals that had blankets outside and stayed on the pavement. The shops seemed to completely rundown but still in service.
She sat down on a random bench that was oddly placed. From there she observed the area that was around her. It took every fibre of her being to not stop herself from completely breaking down into tears. Many market stalls sold what seemed to be cheaply made food. Around many corners in many shady alleyways, it was clear many shady deals transpired and the only mammals that truly were happy here were criminals. Drug dealers, extortioners, traffickers.
There was one thing that seemed to really irk Judy, one thing she just realised. They were all predators. This realisation made Judy feel conscious about her being here. Eventhough she hid her ears under her hood, it still felt as though she could be found. Judy leaned forward and only lightly tipped her head forward. She hid herself so well and seemed to blend in seamlessly. Everything around her was a mess, either graffiti, rubbish or what she could presume to be urine.
Just then, someone sat down next to her and quietly and calmly asked, "So, you have the goods?"
Judy froze in fear, not knowing how to respond to that question. After a couple seconds, she responded very shakily "N-no, I-I don't have anything." She felt extremely distressed right now and didn't know how to act. Her mind was screaming to just run away from this.
"I know you have some left. I have the money, I swear."
Judy now slightly more nervously repeated herself. "I don't have anything, I swear."
The mammal next to her started to get ticked off. He was shaking violently. "Listen, I really need my fix, and I will get it from you. Now, we can both be happy or we can have a disagreement." He was clearly irrational. Judy lightly turned her head and noticed a weasel scratching his forearm. He shuffled towards her and quietly pulled a knife out and gently placed it against Judy's hip.
That was exactly when the training she received from the Spectral Showman kicked in. She pushed the paw that was nearer to the knife down to slap the knife away, causing a slight cut in her jumper. As she pushed the knife away, she jumped away and pulled her gun out, aiming it at the weasel. "I told you, I don't have anything." She shook her head lightly but constantly. "Please, just walk away."
The weasel panicked and raised his paws, while turning his head away. "Please don't hurt me." He then opened his eyes and turned his head back. He stared directly at the bunny and felt something was weird about the mammal he spoke to. Judy realised this and started to walk away, trying to retreat to safety. As Judy turned around and reholstered her gun, the weasel caught up to her and pulled her hood down. Judy instinctively turned around and assumed a fighting stance. "You're a bunny?!" That one act grabbed everyone's attention and placed what seemed like thousands of eyes onto her. She surveyed the area with caution and fear.
She swallowed lightly and constantly moved back away from everyone. An older, more careless wolf, who wore an eyepatch, walked up to the pair and stood by the weasel. "What do you want here?" He was missing a few teeth and was clearly annoyed at the rabbit. "Here to rub salt in the wound, filth? Haven't you taken enough from us already?" His eye was twitching. "You can' give us any peace, even in this shithole?"
"I just got lost and was curious, that's all, I swear. I-I don't want to hurt anyone."
"That's what the last one said, and look where that got me." He pointed at the eyepatch covering his left eye. "So what makes you different?!" Suddenly everyone else started to surround the rabbit with boos directed towards the rabbit and cheers directed towards the wolf.
She just sighed and dropped the gun to the ground. "Come on then. I can't help you, so just do what you want." She dropped down to the ground and curled up into the fetal position as everyone started to close in on her.
"Stand up." The wolf called out. "You don't get to just curl up into a ball, get up!" Judy didn't comply at first, too scared to even do so. She was frozen in fear and tears. The wolf walked up to her and picked her up, standing her up in the process. "Maybe you'll all learn like this." The wolf then threw an under arm throw to try and sucker punch the rabbit in the stomach. Judy reacted by blocking the punch then pushing it to her side. As she pushed the attack away, she rolled in the opposite direction, creating a little space between her and the wolf.
"Stop, I don't want to do this."
"How quickly your tune changes when it doesn't benefit you anymore."
"So what you'll all kill me?"
Then a different mammal spoke up. "Maybe it's time to return the favour." The crowd closed in more, surrounding the bunny even more.
The crowd was angry; they wanted to get even. They all prepared something, claws, bats, knives. Just then a bullet was fired. Everyone froze and turned towards the place where the bullet fired from. Judy saw who shot. "Finnick?"
"Leave the rabbit alone. You wouldn't wanna hurt 'er." He stared at the crowd menacingly. "Everyone back to what ya were doin'."
Many just scoffed and the crowd dispersed. Judy ran towards Finnick. "Thanks but why help me?"
"Don't wanna be on Spectre's bad side." He then turned away. "Hood up and leave while you can. This ain't no place for prey."
Judy nodded and did as he said.
Wolford Residency
Michael sat behind his desk and held the recommendation letter in his paw. The moonlight barely glowed into the office and the room was barely lit. He thought about whether he should or shouldn't sign her up. He thought about the conversation in his head and analysed every single word. Then a female wolf walked into his office. "You've been staring at that sheet of paper as if it was messing with you." She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him on the cheek.
"Well, it is a very important letter, could be the deciding factor in more than just one life, and I'm not talking about my own." He lifted the letter up. "The nice thing to do is say yes, but is it the right thing to do?"
"Well." She then paused for a second and looked at the letter. "You always figure it out." She then let go of her husband. "So, who is he?"
"Her name is Judith Hopps and she is a very capable individual, physically atleast." She jabbed him in the shoulder. "I mean in the sense that she saved my life, Helen. What are you thinking? She's a rabbit as well." His eyes squinted in disgust and annoyance.
She lightly chuckled. "You know I'm messing with ya? But really, what are you thinking?"
"I think I shouldn't since she isn't from the city. She would be very easily swayed. Also she is quite emotional instead of rational and logical. However, because of that you never know, sometimes all of that can be better than thinking rationally. What I'm trying to figure out is whether or not she has a reason to do this. A true uncorruptable reason that would never be gone, no matter what."
"And what are you thinking about that?"
Michael stared blankly at his wife then turned to the letter and signed the bottom of the sheet. "Her reason is she wants to prove a point." He nodded his head. "She said herself, that no matter what anyone said, she would do this." He returned the letter into the envelope. "She has a fire that won't be put out too easily and won't want to fall for corruption."
Helen smiled and shrugged. "Told you, you'd figure it out." She yawned calmly. "I'll be in bed."
A/N: Finally the chapter has been finished and well I'm quite happy with it. Judy feels insecure and inadequate. While this is happening, Wolford has finally decided whether or not Judy should be accepted. While this happened, Judy's insecurity led her to find out how bad some parts of Zootopia can be.
This chapter I felt followed the most important character of this story. This is meant to be Judy's story.
With that all being said I wish you all a good one and hope you all enjoyed. See you all.
