A/N: I'm sure you noticed by now, but if you haven't, a lot of this story is written in the same short form/drabbly style as 'Parallel'. There isn't a lot of emphasis on or details in fight scenes either, something which isn't my usual style. I believed writing it this way worked best for the themes I'm trying to explore. If you want to, let me know what you think about this writing style. Either way, thank you for reading, and enjoy!

. . . . .

"Those who break the rules are trash, but those who abandon their comrades are worse than trash! If I'm going to be called trash either way, I'd rather break the rules! And if that somehow makes me anything less than a real shinobi, then I'll crush all of the so-called "real" shinobi!"

Kakashi trailed behind Obito from a distance, wondering if this feeling burning his insides was the same exact feeling his father felt on his damning mission. It overwhelmed him, combined with the feeling of being naked that came from giving away his device. Obito had stared at it for a long time, wondering what it was.

"If you're going to be so stupid, then take this. When you're inevitably in trouble, make sure at least one hand is holding it, and push your chakra into it. You do know how to do that right?"

"S-Shut up, Bakakashi!" The teen had flushed, coming to understand what Kakashi had given him. Obito always stared at the barrier Kakashi created on missions. At first it took a while to become a reflexive action when needed. Eventually, Kakashi could create it without thinking.

Now, his trusted item rested on Obito's person. He felt like it was right next to him, just too far out of his grasp to reach. A large weight pulled him back, slowing him down, affecting his judgment, and impairing his ability to continue with his mission. Yet, he had no choice but to continue moving. Maybe his father hadn't known which choice was the right one either, and followed his gut to his own demise.

Kakashi wondered why they grabbed Rin, and not him. No one outside the team knew it, but Minato couldn't get past his barrier, even after marking him with a seal. It's what allowed him to grab the bells. He could touch Minato, but Minato couldn't touch him. No one could, as long as he had chakra, and was touching the device. It was a gift, but he still wasn't sure who had given it to him. Somewhere along the line, he decided he wouldn't forgive himself if he lost it or his team on this mission.

'Why can't both be done?' Obito's voice goaded him in his mind. Spurred on by his heart, he too wondered 'Why not?' He watched Obito unknowingly reveal his location with a smack to his own face, and open himself up to an ambush. He leapt into action.

Obito activated his sharingan. Kakashi lost an eye. And Rin lost any bit of innocence left in her telling her that everyone did good things, even if they were viewed as bad things to those watching. It was all for a reason. But what good reason was there to kill people using boulders? Of all the things available in the world to painlessly kill someone, these Iwa nin chose a cave in and boulders…

Obito pushed Kakashi out of the way using both hands in pure instinct. White glinted in his hand.

"The barrier, Obito!" Kakashi shouted his order in response as he stumbled backwards.

He felt the tingling of his trademarked technique as the cave filled with clouds of dust and earth. He stumbled on the ground as he landed in a partial unbalanced crouch. He fell to the floor. He heard something shatter like glass, and knew the barrier faded. Obito screamed.

"Obito!" Rin shouted.

Laughter mocked them, urging on Team Minato's death.

Kakashi rushed over.

Obito's sharingan red eyes looked up at him. Obito's heart raced so loudly. Kakashi heard each beat like a drum over his own heartbeat. "I-I didn't g-give you anything…for…for…your promotion…"

Kakashi knelt on the ground. He shook his head. "You don't have to. That doesn't matter…" He spoke quickly, words babbling out of his mouth.

Obito pressed his device in Kakashi's hands. "D-do you know that's a tracking device…?" Obito wheezed. A hand reached down, trying to massage away the terrible pain in his crushed legs.

Kakashi stared at the device in his hands. "W-what?"

"It's tracking something, but not you…Fuck this hurts…" Obito shut his eyes tightly and sobbed a loud wrenching cry that shook Kakashi to his core.

"O-obito…" Rin murmured.

"If we move it, he'll bleed out immediately…" Kakashi whispered.

Rin sobbed.

"S-someone's watching you, Bakakashi…" Obito eventually continued. "I-I got an idea. 'Cause it sucks I'm not making it out of here. We're friends now, right?"

Kakashi nodded quickly, his hair flopping this way and that. "Yes, yes we are."

"Then, I-I Obito Uchiha…rightfully…what's the word…?" He swallowed thickly, and spit out blood pooled between his lips. "I, Obito Uchiha, formally allow Jounin Hatake Kakashi to take a-and use m-my left eye, Sharingan activated, as h-his own. Can you do that, Rin? Make that happen?"

"O-obito?" Kakashi whispered. He reached a hand up to the bandage covering his own damaged eye.

"I-It's gotta be said like that. O-or Clan Head can kill you for bloodline stealing s-second you get back home." He watched Rin inject him with something. "What was that? I feel giddy now."

"Fast acting pain medication." Rin whispered. She turned back around and started searching through her medical pack. "I can make it happen."

"You're the best, Rin."

"W-we need to be fast, the cave is destabilizing." She seemingly ignored him.

"Why?" Kakashi asked Obito.

"I can't…need to protect…even after I'm gone. Y-you can't take me with you. D-don't try. Find what gave you that, okay?" He pointed to the device. "I-it's close by…"

"O-Okay."

Obito smiled, showing off blood stained teeth. "I'm about to… die… but I'll become your eye… and see the future with you."

Kakashi's Hakate's mind and heart shattered as Rin performed surgery on both him and Obito. He lost track of what was going on around him, and lost all sense of reason. Minato Namikaze was not the one who would kill his teammates. Kakashi Hatake himself was…
