A/N: This chapter is going to be written from the POVs (points of view) or perspectives of different characters, but in the third person. It's also the second of the two Christmas chapters and it's going to be before the New Year's Eve chapter. I've probably said it before, but I'm at least halfway done with the story. And, I am planning on doing sequels.
Disclaimer: I don't own the Karate Kid movies, Cobra Kai or anything else that I might reference.
Christmas In The Valley
Today was officially Christmas. Or, more accurately, today was Christmas Day.
Daniel and Amanda woke up at roughly the same time.
They got out of bed and got dressed.
Amanda went to the bathroom to brush her teeth, leaving Daniel in the bedroom by himself.
He waited a few minutes before Amanda walked back into the bedroom.
"Good morning, and Merry Christmas. Julie, Eric and their kids are going to be here after breakfast. Which means we've got some time to spend with Sam and Anthony." Amanda says.
Daniel nods. "Great. I wonder if Sam and Anthony are awake yet, or if they're still asleep."
"Well, they're not little kids anymore. And Christmas probably isn't as big of a deal for them." Amanda replies.
Daniel thinks about it. "I think you're right. Even Anthony is starting to grow up, and it would be a bit foolish to expect them to remain kids forever."
"That's very philosophical. I'm sure that Sam and Anthony are probably awake by now. They wouldn't want to miss Julie and Eric visiting. Or their kids. Maybe it might be a good idea to check if they're awake." Amanda suggests.
Daniel agrees. "Yeah. I might just do that. Are you still going to be up here or are you going downstairs?"
"I think I'll head downstairs." Amanda answers.
Daniel watches as Amanda leaves the room.
He walks out of the room and walks over to Anthony's room.
The door was open, which meant that Anthony had probably already gone downstairs.
That just left Sam's room.
Daniel walked over to Sam's room and noticed that the door was closed.
He gently knocks on the door. "Sam? Are you in there?"
"I'll be out in a minute, Dad." He hears Sam's voice from the other side of the door.
Daniel takes a few steps back from the door and waits.
It's about a minute or so before Sam opens the door of her room and steps out.
He smiles. "Good morning, Sam."
"Good morning, Dad. Merry Christmas." Sam says.
Daniel smiles. "Thank you. And, a Merry Christmas to you, too."
"You're welcome, Dad. I wasn't going to miss Aunt Julie and Uncle Eric visiting. Oh, and I almost forgot about Riley and Jack." Sam replies.
Daniel nods. "They'll be happy to see you, too. And we've got some new things to talk about with them."
"Like me and Miguel or the fact that you're teaching again?" Sam asks.
Daniel thinks about it. "I think the fact that I'm teaching again would interest Julie quite a bit. And, I'm sure they'd both be happy to hear about Miguel."
"Great. Speaking of Miguel, would it be okay if he came over one of the days between today and New Year's Eve? Just to meet Aunt Julie and Uncle Eric, I mean." Sam asks.
Daniel nods. "Miguel is definitely welcome. But I'll have to check with Julie and Eric about what their other plans are and if they can fit some other stuff in."
"Okay. I think Mom and Anthony are downstairs already, by the way." Sam says.
Daniel's eyes widen slightly. "Oh. Well, we'd better get a move on."
He walks downstairs and Sam follows closely behind him.
Daniel sees Amanda and Anthony in the dining room.
"So, who wants breakfast? Because your father and I will be in the kitchen." Amanda addresses this particular statement to Sam and Anthony.
Daniel continues. "We'll be making pancakes."
"Pancakes sound good." Sam replies.
Anthony agrees. "Yeah."
Daniel and Amanda go into the kitchen, leaving Sam and Anthony sitting at different parts of the dining table.
"Will you and Julie be going to Mr Miyagi's grave?" Amanda asks.
Daniel nods. "Yes. I haven't been to Mr Miyagi's grave in a while. Things have been fairly busy."
"I know. You've been so busy with work and mentoring Robby. It's good that you've found somebody you can help and mentor. Because it felt like there was something missing before." Amanda says.
Daniel thinks about it. "You're right. I feel like teaching Robby has brought me closer to Mr Miyagi. Even though he's been gone for so long."
"Just remember to have balance." Amanda advises.
They talk as they make pancakes.
It takes less time for them to make pancakes than it does if only one of them was doing it.
They get plates to put the pancakes on, along with cutlery.
The walk to the dining room is pretty straightforward, and they put plates and cutlery down in front of Sam and Anthony before putting plates and cutlery down where they're going to sit.
Daniel walks back to the kitchen and gets a bottle of maple syrup.
He walks back into the dining room and places the bottle on the table before sitting down.
They talk as they eat.
Daniel and Amanda clear away the empty plates and cutlery before putting them in the dishwasher.
The bottle of maple syrup also gets put back where it had been taken from.
It wasn't going to be too long before Julie, Eric, Riley and Jack arrived.
In fact, Julie had sent a text to Daniel telling him that they were about to drive over from where they were staying.
That was a couple of minutes ago.
Daniel helps Amanda get the house ready to welcome Julie, Eric, Riley and Jack.
They hear the doorbell ring.
Daniel goes to open the door.
He opens the door and sees Julie, Eric, Riley and Jack standing outside. Their rental car was parked just outside the driveway.
Daniel takes a step back and welcomes them in. "Julie! Eric! It's so good to see you. And the kids."
"Thanks. It's good to see you too." Julie says.
The door is closed behind Riley and Jack.
Daniel smiles. "You're welcome. Do you want to go to Mr Miyagi's grave now, or do you want to get settled here first?"
"I could use a coffee, actually." Julie replies.
Eric interjects. "Coffee would be great. I take mine with milk and sugar. Unless you don't feel like making coffee."
"Oh, we don't mind. You're our guests, after all." Amanda remarks.
Amanda goes into the kitchen to make coffee while Julie and Eric follow Daniel to the dining room.
Riley goes to talk to Sam while Anthony and Jack are talking.
Daniel sits down at the table. "So, how has your vacation been so far?"
"It's been great. We haven't been here in a while, so it's been nice to go around and see everything. Plus, we're staying in an Airbnb property for the duration of our trip. Which kind of does make things easier in a way." Eric answers.
Daniel understands. "I'm sure it does. Especially because you've got relatively young kids."
"Exactly. Even though Riley isn't all that young anymore." Julie adds.
Daniel nods. "True. But there's also Jack."
"Yeah. We have travelled since Jack was born, but not as much as we would have liked. Plus, Eric and I are both so busy with our jobs." Julie says.
Daniel looks at Julie. "So, how's the dojo going? Seeing as you were talking about your jobs."
"It's going pretty well. I heard that you're training somebody, by the way. How'd that happen?" Julie asks.
Daniel lets out a small chuckle. "It's kind of a funny story. Robby applied to work in LaRusso Auto and he had an excellent resumé, so we hired him. I started teaching him karate not too long after that. He took to it pretty quickly, actually."
"That's good. I think the reason he took to it so quickly was because he had a good teacher. Or would I be wrong?" Julie muses.
Daniel looks a little embarrassed. "Sam was the only person I taught before Robby. And, I stopped practicing karate almost entirely after Mr Miyagi died. So, I'm not entirely sure that I'm the best Sensei."
"I'm sure you're doing a great job." Julie is quick to reassure him.
Daniel scratches his head. "Thank you."
"You can figure it out. I mean, you set up a chain of car dealerships. Teaching someone who needs it should be relatively straightforward." Eric says.
Daniel agrees. "You're right. I think I might be putting too much pressure on myself. When it comes to mentoring Robby, I mean."
"It's kind of like being a parent." Eric adds.
Daniel nods. "That's one way to look at it."
"Your coffee's ready! I'll just bring it out for you now." They hear Amanda's voice coming from the kitchen.
Amanda walks in carrying two cups of coffee. She places one cup in front of Julie and another cup in front of Eric.
Daniel watches as Amanda sits down in the chair next to him.
He pulls his chair back slightly. "I hope you haven't been feeling too left out."
"It's fine. I know how much Mr Miyagi meant to you and Julie." Amanda replies.
Daniel smiles. "I'm glad that you've been so understanding."
"Well, you know that you can always count on me." Amanda answers.
Daniel grins. "Great. And I'm always happy to hear it."
Julie and Eric drink their coffee.
They put the now empty mugs down on the table.
"I'm ready to go now." Julie says.
Daniel nods. "Alright. We'll be back later. I haven't had a chance to go to Mr Miyagi's grave for a while and now is as good a time as any."
"Okay. We'll have lunch when you get back. And, possibly start preparing dinner." Amanda remarks.
Daniel nods. "Great."
Julie and Daniel push their chairs back and stand up before putting them back.
They walk through the house and get to the front door.
Daniel opens the door and Julie steps out before Daniel walks out and closes the door behind him.
He's brought his keys with him and unlocks the Audi.
Julie opens the door gets into the passenger's seat while Daniel gets into the driver's seat.
They put on their seatbelts before Daniel reverses out of the driveway.
It shouldn't take them too long to get to the cemetery.
….
Daniel parks his car in the parking lot of the cemetery and gets out.
Julie gets out of the car and closes the door behind her.
They leave the parking lot of the cemetery and walk to where Mr Miyagi's grave is located.
Mr Miyagi's grave was well maintained.
There were bunches of flowers by the grave and a pot with a bonsai tree growing out of it that was placed on top of it.
"It still looks pretty good." Julie says.
Daniel nods. "It's very well maintained. Even if I haven't been back here as often as I'd liked. Or, maybe I'd said that earlier?"
"It doesn't matter. I don't think I would be married to Eric if I had never met Mr Miyagi. And I probably wouldn't have met you and Amanda, either." Julie replies.
Daniel lets out a deep breath. "He had a way of bringing people together. You know, I think he would be proud that we're able to pass on what he taught us."
Yeah. You did say something about finding a student. Although, he might have found you."
Daniel thinks about it. "That probably makes more sense. He was just looking for a mentor. And, I didn't really think to ask him about his home life. Even though I probably should have."
"Maybe. Didn't you say that your old karate rival reopened his old dojo or something?" Julie changes the subject.
Danield nods. "He reopened Cobra Kai. One of his original students happens to be dating Sam and the other one is the grandson of the old Sensei of Cobra Kai."
"Kreese? I didn't know he even had a family." Julie sounds surprised.
Daniel grins slightly. "Yeah. It was kind of a surprise to me, too."
"But he's nothing like Kreese, right?" Julie asks.
Daniel thinks about the question before he answers. "He's not."
"Good. So, you want to head back?" Julie asks.
Daniel nods. "Sure."
They walk away from Mr Miyagi's grave.
Mr Miyagi would have continued to be proud of the people that they had become.
….
Lunch was relatively simple, seeing as preparing for dinner would be Bobby and Violet's main focus.
Jason and Claire helped set the table for dinner after they had lunch and helped clear away any plates.
They were currently in Claire's room and sitting on Claire's bed.
"I saw your selfies with Miguel from yesterday. And, I definitely like the sweater. Did Miguel get you matching sweaters?" Claire asks.
Jason smiles. "Yeah. I really like your sweater, too."
"Thanks. I bought it last year, but it's still wearable. I might get a new one if I feel like it." Claire says.
Jason scratches his head. "Well, you don't have to."
"I know. Do you want to watch Christmas movies? The Doctor Who Christmas special isn't going to be airing over here until later. And we've got enough time to watch one or two Christmas movies before dinner." Claire suggests.
Jason nods. "That's a pretty good idea. So, yes. I do want to watch Christmas movies."
"Awesome. Do you want to watch Jingle All The Way or Gremlins?" Claire asks.
Jason thinks about it. "Jingle All The Way. It's got pretty much everything. And it's arguably one of the best Christmas movies ever made. At least in my opinion."
"Fair enough." Claire says.
Jason smiles. "I'm glad that we've agreed."
"Yeah. I'll just get it started." Claire turns on the TV and puts a Blu-Ray of Jingle All the Way into the Blu-Ray player.
Jason notices that Claire also has a DVD player connected to the TV in her room.
Then again, that had always been there.
He puts an arm around Claire and lets her snuggle up to him. "Cool."
Claire presses Play when the menu comes up.
They watch the movie together and laugh at the funny scenes.
When the movie ends, Claire gets up and ejects the Blu-Ray before putting it back in the case.
"You want to watch another movie?" Claire asks.
Jason nods. "Sure. But I don't want to watch a Christmas movie if we're going to be watching Christmas stuff later."
"How about Ninja Scroll?" Claire suggests.
Jason smiles. "That sounds pretty good. Then again, I've never seen it before so I have no way of knowing if it's actually good or not. But I trust your judgment."
"Great. You want to watch it on DVD or on Blu-Ray?" Claire asks.
Jason lets out a laugh. "Surprise me."
"DVD it is." Claire says.
Jason watches as Claire looks for a DVD case and finds it.
Claire takes the DVD out and walks over to the DVD player before putting it in.
She picks up the remote when the menu comes up and presses Play.
Jason watches as Claire sits back on her bed and puts the remote down beside her.
They watch the movie and talk.
When the movie is finished, Claire presses the Eject button on the DVD player and puts the Ninja Scroll DVD back in its case before putting the DVD case back where she keeps her DVDs.
Jason watches as Claire sits back down on the bed.
He keeps his attention focused on her and the door. "Do you think that dinner's ready yet?"
"Not yet. I'm sure Mom or Dad will tell us to come downstairs when dinner's ready." Claire answers.
Jason nods. "Cool."
"So, what have you got planned for New Year's?" Claire asks.
Jason runs a hand through his hair. "Well, I'll probably end up hanging out with Miguel. And, I'll be going to this one bar I know that doesn't check whether an ID is fake or not."
"Will other people be going with you?" Claire asks.
Jason nods. "Yep. Miguel, Hawk, Demetri and Leonard will be going with me."
"I don't think Demetri has ever gotten drunk. And, I've known Hawk and Demetri for a long time. Longer thank I've known you, in fact." Claire says.
Jason scratches his head. "Well, yeah. We met because of Cobra Kai. Then again, we probably would have met if Sensei hadn't revived Cobra Kai. So…."
"It's probably better if you don't dwell on it." Claire interrupts him.
Jason agrees. "Yeah."
"You spent Christmas Eve with Miguel, right?" Claire asks.
Jason nods. "I did. Is there any particular reason why you're asking?"
"I think you said something about Sensei's car not being at his apartment until relatively late. Sensei was visiting a friend of his and Dad's. Tommy's got cancer and it's terminal. Which means that he's got less than a year to live." Claire answers.
Jason looks down at the bed before turning his attention back to Claire. "That's pretty rough."
Claire is about to say something before there's a knock on the door.
"Dinner's ready." Bobby opens the door and looks in the room.
Jason and Claire look at each other and nod before following Bobby downstairs.
They walk into the dining room of the house and sit down beside each other while Bobby walks into the kitchen.
Jason wondered if Sensei was spending Christmas with Miguel's family or if he was going to be on his own.
….
Carmen and Rosa might have kicked Johnny and Miguel out of the kitchen while they were preparing dinner, but they helped clean up now that dinner was over.
"Do you two want dessert?" Carmen asks.
Johnny and Miguel look at each other and nod. "Sure."
"Great. Would you mind getting some small plates? And some spoons?" Carmen requests.
Miguel and Johnny go and get small plates and spoons before sitting back down at the table.
Rosa gets up and takes a cake out of the fridge and places it on the middle of the table after removing what was covering it.
Carmen gets a knife to cut the cake after Rosa sits down.
Johnny watches as Carmen cuts the cake in half before cutting it into quarters and into eighths.
Carmen puts a slice of cake onto her plate before putting a slice of cake onto Johnny's, Miguel's and Rosa's respective plates.
Johnny watches as Carmen gets up to clean the knife and put it away before sitting back down.
He looks around at Carmen, Rosa and Miguel. "Thank you for letting me spend Christmas with you. It really means a lot."
"You're welcome. It's good to have you here, for multiple reasons." Carmen replies.
Miguel agrees. "Yeah. You're always going to be welcome, Sensei."
"Thank you, Diaz. Or should I call you Miguel? I'm guessing that the other Cobras are spending the Holidays with their folks or whatever. Or whoever." Johnny says.
Miguel smiles. "You're welcome? We've probably been over this already, but I don't really mind what you call me. So, Miguel is fine. And, the other Cobras are spending the Holidays with their folks. Except for Jason. He's spending Christmas with Claire and her parents."
"And what about your girlfriend?" Carmen asks.
Miguel's face lights up. "She's spending Christmas with her family. And some friends of her family from Boston who are kind of like family to them."
"Cool. Family is pretty important this time of year." Johnny says.
Everybody agrees.
They eat their desserts and talk.
Johnny and Miguel get seconds.
They help clear the table while Carmen puts the cake, or what's left of it, back in the fridge.
Rosa goes to get something from her room and comes back carrying a gift bag.
Johnny opens the bag and looks inside.
He can see a bottle opener. "Thanks. It really means a lot."
"Don't worry about it. You've done so much for Miguel. And we couldn't thank you enough." Rosa says.
Miguel gives Johnny a furtive look before speaking up again. "So, what happened to your friend? Jason and I didn't see your car outside your apartment until later last night."
"Tommy's got cancer, and it's terminal. This was more than likely his last Christmas. And, he'd be lucky if he makes it past next summer." Johnny replies.
Miguel processes this information. "I'm sorry."
"Don't worry about it. Death comes for all of us, and it comes for some of us sooner than others." Johnny runs a hand through his hair.
Miguel nods. "Yeah. I suppose it does."
"So, what are your plans for New Year's Eve?" Johnny asks.
Miguel smiles. "I'll be hanging out with Jason before meeting up with Demitri, Hawk and Leonard. We're going to go to a place that Jason knows. Where people don't get asked for ID."
"Well, just remember to be responsible, Miggy." Carmen interjects.
Miguel looks slightly embarrassed. "I will. And I'm just going to go and call Sam. If that's okay?"
"Sure." Carmen answers.
Miguel gets up and walks to his room.
Johnny watches as Miguel leaves before turning his attention back to Carmen. "So, what have you got planned for New Year's Eve?"
"Not too much." Carmen replies.
Johnny lets out a deep breath. "Would you like to spend New Year's Eve with me? We could eat dinner somewhere and go celebrate. If you want."
"Sure." Carmen says.
Johnny stands up. "Great. Well, I'd probably better go. See you tomorrow."
"See you tomorrow." Carmen says.
Rosa gives Johnny a nod.
Johnny takes the bottle opener that Rosa had given him and walks towards the door of the apartment before opening it.
He steps through the doorway and closes it behind him.
The walk back to his apartment is relatively quick.
He unlocks the door of his apartment and walks inside before closing it behind him.
Spending Christmas with Miguel and his family had worked out pretty well.
Especially now that he had plans for New Year's.
….
Jason was back at his house after spending a lot of the day with Claire and her family.
He was watching TV when he heard a knock on the door.
Jason turned the TV off and went to see who it was.
He opens the door and is surprised to see a woman around Kreese or Silver's age standing in front of him.
"Oh, hello. You might not know who I am, but my name is Evelyn. And, I'm your grandmother." Evelyn's accent was an English accent with hints of an American accent.
Jason processes this piece of information. "Okay. I think you'd better come inside. Because we have a lot to talk about."
"I think that would be for the best." Evelyn agrees.
Jason takes a few steps back in order to let Evelyn walk into the house.
He watches as Evelyn closes the door after she steps inside.
They walk to the dining room and sit down.
Jason breaks the silence that had descended over them. "So, do you want me to get you anything? Water? A soda?"
"Some sparkling water would be lovely. If you have it." Evelyn replies.
Jason gets up and walks into the kitchen.
He opens the fridge and takes a can of Coke and a small bottle of sparkling water out of the fridge before walking back to the dining room.
Jason hands Evelyn the bottle of sparkling water before he sits down.
He opens his soda and takes a drink before he says anything. "How did you meet Kreese?"
"I met John when he came back from being deployed in Vietnam. I was a relatively new arrival here back then. Our relationship progressed and we got married. And Martin, your father, was born after that." Evelyn starts.
Jason nods. "Okay. So, what happened after that?"
"John threw himself into running Cobra Kai. Especially after he had found his first champion, and before Johnny Lawrence and his friends joined Cobra Kai." Evelyn continues.
Jason takes another sip of his Coke. "When did you split up?"
"After the All-Valley tournament in 1984. Even though our relationship had been falling apart before then. Martin took it pretty hard and started falling in with a rough crowd. And, John dropped out of my life complete after the All-Valley tournament in 1985." Evelyn replies.
Jason finishes his Coke before asking another question. "Did you meet Terry Silver through Grandpa Kreese?"
"I did. And I never really trusted him. I assume that he is the reason why you're living in this house by yourself." Evelyn answers.
Jason nods. "Yeah."
"Do you train?" Evelyn asks.
Jason smiles slightly. "I do. I've been in Cobra Kai since the summer. Or, more accurately, I've been in the new Cobra Kai since the summer."
"Did one of the students of the old Cobra Kai bring it back to life?" Evelyn wonders.
Jason nods. "Johnny Lawrence was the person who revived Cobra Kai. But… I call him "Sensei" most of the time. And, I'm his best student other than Miguel. Or, we're his best students because we got black belts before any of the other students did."
"Well done on becoming a black belt. Especially because you became one so quickly." Evelyn says.
There's a pause in the conversation as Evelyn opens the bottle of sparkling water and takes a drink.
Jason looks a little embarrassed. "Thanks. The reason Sensei gave Miguel and I black belts was because of the cafeteria fight. Because that's when a lot of people joined Cobra Kai."
"I think I might have seen footage of the cafeteria fight. You did very well, if I recall." Evelyn answers.
Jason watches as Evelyn finishes drinking the water.
There was another question he wanted to ask. "Why didn't you apply for guardianship of me?"
"I tried to apply for guardianship of you, but my application was rejected. I truly wish that things had worked out differently." Evelyn's answer was fairly short.
Jason understands. "Don't worry about it. There was nothing you could have done."
"I hope you can forgive me." Evelyn says.
Jason nods. "There's nothing to forgive."
"In that case, it's probably time for me to go. But we will have to keep in touch." Evelyn says.
Jason agrees. "Yeah."
They exchange contact information before Evelyn leaves.
Jason has another Coke before he eventually goes upstairs.
Training was going to start again from tomorrow, but only until New Year's Eve. And, training would start back up again the day after New Year's Day.
So, he needed to get some rest.
Because today had been a busy day.
