James Potter was pacing the empty hallway, waiting for any information on his wife's status. His mind kept flashing back to the skirmish that they had just had which led to his current situation.
James Potter was finishing up his latest magic tricks to impress their 6 month-year-olds. After he put his wand away he tucked both boys; Harry, who looked exactly like him except the eyes, which looked the same as the pair he had fallen in love with, and Toby, who had more dark auburn hair and his eyes were the same as the ones he saw when he looked in the mirror.
He had just kissed each boy on the forehead when an ethereal blue light bathed the room. He looked to the source only to see a light blue coyote staring back at him with his muzzle open ready to speak.
"James, help, under attack by death eaters, I don't know how they found me, come quickly" Peter Pettigrew's voice sounded as it left the Coyote.
As soon as James heard this he cast 2 sleeping charms on his sons and rushed downstairs to see that Lily had also heard the message and was already heading towards the front door.
"Ready?" James asked as he knew his wife would come with him no matter how badly he wanted her to stay home so she wouldn't be in danger.
"Always." Lily replied with a serious expression on her face as she was gathering her loose hair into a ponytail.
As soon as James got confirmation, he opened the door and rushed outside allowing Lily to lock the door behind them, which she did wandlessly and wordlessly over her shoulder. Lily had always been better at charms and could perform most basic ones wandlessly by now. It was one of the reasons Voldemort wanted to recruit her despite her blood status as muggleborn.
As soon as they were over the ward line, they both spun on the spot and apparated to Peter's house only to see it blazing like an inferno. He could see multiple flashes of multicoloured light all coming towards a toppled wall at the east side of the building.
Suddenly a pop came from beside them and instantly both their wands were pointed at the new sound.
"Don't point that at me Prongs" Sirius said with a lot more sternness than one would expect from Sirius Black. "Let's go show these bastards what happens when they mess with our friends"
At that all 3 of them rushed towards the angled wall clearly seeing Peter trapped under it so he could not move.
Sirius was the first to react and sent a trio of curses towards the nearest masked figure only for them to dodge the first 2 and shield the third. Lily followed this up with her own jet of bright yellow light which caught the death eater's shoulder causing his wand arm to droop. It was a spell of Lily's own design that would relax the muscles of wherever the spell hit. It was one of her preferred spells as not only was it unknown but also seemed to have a different effect on different people so nobody could recognise what it did.
Whilst the death eater was confused why his arm wasn't moving James followed this up with a stunner of his own and the man dropped into a heap on the ground.
When James felt another spell incoming, he was already getting ready to fire back as he knew Sirius would already have a shield up. He fired a severing charm at their legs. Clearly the man was not expecting such a quick retaliation as could only move slightly so the spell avoided his legs but still caught his robes which worked well enough as their robe fell and wrapped round their legs. Lily caught onto this and already was summoning the robe to them causing the death eater to fall to the ground and hit his head off the stone foundations of the house with a sickening crack.
Suddenly a blast of water hit James in the back causing him to be thrust away from his wife and best friend. He looked up to see that he was surrounded on 3 sides by solid stone walls. James was about to vanish them when he heard a female voice shout out "Crucio."
James instinctively ducked and felt the red light zoom past where his chest had been not even a second ago. James attacked back by conjuring 4 grizzly bears surrounding the female death eater. All she did was laugh as transfigured them into axes and banished them back towards James.
James moved to the side to avoid the first two, he moved some debris to block the third. For the final one he had something special planned, so he planted his feet and shouted "Carpe Retactum." A cord burst forth from his wand and latched onto the handle of the fourth axe. He flicked his wand above his head causing the axe to spin around him and he released the spell sending the axe back to the death eater. As it was flying towards her, he sent a silent 'Engorgio' towards the axe as at the last second it almost tripled in size much to the surprise of the death eater who now was missing a hand.
She shrieked in pain that was quickly ended as she fell to the ground unconscious. For safe measures James also tied her up in ropes and disarmed her in a blink of an eye.
He turned his attention back to the walls of stone that had 2 axes sticking out of it and fired 3 explosion charms at the wall until it finally fell.
He froze unadulterated fury as saw Lily banish 3 death eaters all entangled with each other into the burning building only to turn right into a dull olive coloured spell that hit her right in the stomach. She doubled over in pain and let out a cry of agony. He looked where the spell come from only to see a death eater with a lot of blood on the side of their head and a robes that had been cut shorter than they should be.
James saw the perpetrators wand tip start glowing green and he conjured a wall of stone right in front of him as he heard the words "AVADA KEDAVRA" ring out across the battlefield.
Even with the mask covering the mans features James could almost see his eyes widening as the curse hit the stone wall which exploded right in his face. James wasted no time in picking up and banishing the rubble of the walls that previously trapped him towards the man who was now lying on his back clearly winded. As the rubble was in flight it was transfigured into sharp daggers and pierced the man's neck, head and body as they all found their mark.
Suddenly a cry of a phoenix filled everyone's ears and a hopefully feeling filled James's soul. The next distinguishable thing James heard was an unfamiliar voice shouting "RETREAT!" He looked towards the voice and sent as many offensive spells as he could think of towards the man only for none of them to hit as he spun and disappeared. He rushed towards Lily and out of the corner of his eye he saw Sirius cast a blood boiling curse towards a death eater who was about to disapparate only for it to make contact and half his leg be left behind as he splinched themselves.
James reached Lily's side and immediately start casting the limited amount of diagnostic charm he knew. What these spells turned up he knew to be out of his skill level, so he grabbed hold of her and said, "St. Mungo's Now." He felt the familiar pull behind his navel as they arrived at the front doors to St Mungo's. He quickly lifted Lily and let her lean on himself as they limped into the lobby only for the receptionist to take one glance at them and call a healer. James personally didn't think they looked bad enough to warrant such a reaction but when he looked down onto the reflective floor, he saw the cuts on all his visible skin as well as blood soaking his clothes and a trail of blood from the main doors to his feet.
A male healer rushed out of a side door and ran to lift Lily up from the other side. They made their way together to a private room. "Sir, please sit down you need are clearly injured." The healer said.
James glared at him. "No, see my wife first, she's more important than me. I'm fine"
"Very well." The healer said, "However I will then have to ask you to leave."
"Sure, fine, just make sure my wife is safe" he said as he turned and left the room
James was broken out of his musings when he saw a female healer rush past him into the room Lily was in. James could feel the adrenaline of the fight starting to leave his body as it became harder and harder to move his legs. Eventually he tried to put his hand against the wall to stop himself collapsing only for his arm to burst into sudden pain as he fell to the floor.
He heard more footsteps and feared that more healers would be rushing down the hallways but when he looked up all he saw was the concerned faces of his previous headmaster along with 2 of his best friends.
Dumbledore took his wand out immediately and started casting healing charms at James and he saw the cuts on his arms and legs start to close.
"James, where's Lily?" Sirius asked anxiously.
James could not verbally respond so he just nodded his head towards the door of the room Lily was in.
"James, I'm sorry to ask, but what of Harry and Toby, who is looking after them?" Dumbledore asked when he deemed James to be sufficiently stable.
James suddenly tried to jump to his feet only to stumble and be caught by Sirius and Peter who both could guess what the answer would be. "Don't worry, I wasn't badly injured I can go look after them tonight" Peter said earnestly.
"Thanks Peter" James replied as he was gently placed into an armchair that certainly wasn't there before. He looked at Dumbledore suspiciously only to see his eyes twinkling more than they normally seem to do. He was too tired for words so just nodded in gratitude and as he closed his eyes, he slowly drifted off to sleep, too exhausted to stay awake even with how anxious he was about Lily's situation.
James opened his eyes to sunlight streaming through the window to his left. He looked down only to see himself in a pristine white hospital bed. He looked to his right to see another bed with someone lying in it. He could only see the hair of the person but that was all he needed to see to know who was beside him. He could recognize that red hair anywhere. He could feel himself start to relax now that he knew she was safe.
He looked around the room and all he saw was 2 empty beds on the other side of the room with plain cream-coloured walls. He looked to the bedside table to see a glass of water which he quickly drank. As he put the glass back down the door opened and in walked the female healer, he saw rushing to the room last night. He could now get a good look at her. She was about average height with dark brown hair with the same-coloured eyes. You could see her roots starting to turn a bit grey, but you could tell it made her no less of a healer. "Good morning, Mr. Potter" she said in a voice that sounded downcast, but you could hear the exhaustion behind it as well. "As you can see, your wife is stable and is expected to make a full recovery however I'm afraid your unborn child could not make it"
James completely froze. His mind went blank in the confusion. "Excuse me?"
The healer looked upon James and saw the confusion on his face. "Ah, I see you didn't know. I'm sorry to have to inform you in this manor but Mrs. Potter was about 6 weeks pregnant and when she was hit by a dark curse. It ended the child's life"
James froze further, his face went completely blank and as he tried to process the words. They kept bouncing in his head 'dark curse … ended … child's life … dark curse … child's life … dark curse … dark … ended … dark … dark curse … child's life … dark.' The words repeated themselves in his head over and over and over until he couldn't even hear anything the healer was saying. He stood up and made his way towards the door only to be stopped by the healer. James saw her lips moving but the sound didn't make his ears.
James stopped trying to make his way to the door and just became a statue. Completely unmoving as his mind was going in circles as he focused on the words the healer had told him. 'dark curse … dark curse … dark curse … dark curse … dark … dark … dark.' The mantra was repeated over and over again in his head. He already didn't like dark magic, but he could feel that dislike become rooted deeper and deeper. Festering like an untreated wound.
He looked over at Lily who was still soundly asleep, looking as peaceful as ever and he knew that she did not deserve this fate. No one did. Almost as if she could feel his gaze on her she started stirring.
She opened her eyes only to see James standing up with an innumerable amount of emotions swimming behind his eyes. "Lily, I'm so sorry" he muttered.
Lily looked to the healer who looked both exhausted and shot her a look of sympathy. "James… what do you mean you're sorry? I got careless and was hit, you were trapped. Don't blame yourself for my being injured. Anyway, I'm fine now and that's what matters" she said trying to be bring the mood of the room round to be more optimistic.
James looked towards the healer only to see her shake her head slightly. Lily was watching the exchange with confusion and was starting to get anxious of what she was not being told.
"Lily, yes, you're ok, but…. But …" James let out a sob "Y-y-you w-were…" he trailed off and tears were forming in his eyes and sliding down his face.
"I was what James?" Lily asked already fearing the answer
"Mrs. Potter" The healer said, "I'm afraid that you were about 6 weeks pregnant and in last night's ordeal; the baby's life was lost"
After hearing that, Lily broke down into tears. James moved towards her and sat on her bed as the cuddled together. Finding comfort in each other during this time of grief
James looked at the look of utter devastation on his wife's face and promised himself that no one would ever feel as awful as she currently felt. He promised himself that he would see the end of dark magic and anyone with any association about it. He would make it all illegal for what it did to his family. He vowed to never use dark magic and would stay away from anyone who did. But now he had more pressing issues than his revenge on dark magic.
The healer excused herself and left James and Lily to sob into each other's shoulders in unimaginable grief.
