Chapter 2: Training Begins
Nezuko and Tanjiro searched for Urokodaki.
According to the map, he was nearby.
It looked like their journey would be over soon.
Oddly enough, Nezuko didn't seem to be tiring at all. She had more stamina since becoming a demon, it seemed. Tanjiro was feeling s bit worn out, but she was not.
It was currently late at night.
They eventually came across a temple.
Was this where he lived?
Tanjiro knocked on the door.
They heard someone walking toward them.
Squirtle began to feel nervous for some reason.
The door slowly opened.
Suddenly, they heard a scary voice.
"Who do you think you are, trespassing on my territory?" asked the man.
…or should we say demon.
"It's a demon!" exclaimed Tanjiro.
All of a sudden, Tanjiro appreciated what Giyu had told him.
"Wait, you're a human?" asked the demon.
He licked his lips.
It was his lucky night. A human had walked right on his doorstep.
All of a sudden, Tanjiro knew exactly how a Rattata felt when faced with a Persian.
"Should we run?" asked Nezuko.
Tanjiro tried that, but the demon only chased after him.
"I will make you my prey!" exclaimed the monster.
To make matters worse, it didn't seem like he tired at all.
Sooner or later, Tanjiro would run out of breath, and then the demon would pounce on him.
It seemed he was going to have to fight.
Tanjiro stabbed him in the chest with a knife.
For a moment, the demon stopped moving.
"Whew!" exclaimed Tanjiro.
But much to his surprise, he regenerated from his wound.
'You didn't think killing me was going to be that easy, did you?" questioned the temple demon.
There were in fact humans that tried stabbing him before.
But it just didn't work.
Tanjiro gasped.
The demon lunged at him with his claws.
Luckily, Squirtle came to his aid.
He splashed him with water.
The temple demon recoiled from the water.
He turned his attention to the turtle Pokemon.
"It looks like I'll be having Squirtle Soup to go with my dinner!" exclaimed the temple demon.
Squirtle didn't like the sound of that.
Though he did like the sound of having soup as his meal.
He clawed at his head, but he quickly ducked into his shell.
A Pokedex recording began to play,
Squirtle, the Tiny Turtle Pokemon. It shelters itself in its shell, then strikes back with spouts of water at every opportunity.
"That shell of yours won't protect you from me!" shouted the demon.
Immediately, he picked up Squirtle and prepared to throw him at a nearby tree.
But Nezuko stepped in as well.
She sank his teeth into his arm.
This causes him to drop Squirtle.
The temple demon was not happy that there was another demon trespassing in his hunting grounds.
"This is my food! Get your own!" demanded the demon.
"I'm not trying to eat him. I'm trying to protect him!" exclaimed Nezuko.
The temple demon looked at Nezuko with astonishment.
"Wha-what?!" exclaimed the temple demon.
It seemed Nezuko was much better suited for fighting the temple demon than her brother was.
It seemed that becoming a demon had its perks.
The two of them fought each other, but it appeared to be a stalemate.
It appeared that like Nezuko, the temple demon was freshly turned.
Tanjiro decided to help, but he wasn't sure what good his attacks would do.
A kitchen knife clearly wasn't going to help.
Squirtle's Water Gun seemed more effective, but he was a low level Pokemon.
So he could only do so much.
Bur as it turned out, luck was on their side.
Suddenly, the temple demon noticed the sun was coming up.
"No! Not daylight savings time!" bellowed the demon.
He had completely forgotten about it.
He started to burn.
And scream.
"That's right, Giyu said that the sun was lethal to demons." spoke Tanjiro.
He would remind himself to thank Giyu for telling him that.
Fortunately for Nezuko, she had managed to put herself back in her box.
Unfortunately for the temple demon, he had no shelter he could reach in time.
It looked like this was the end for him.
Tanjiro couldn't help but feel bad for him.
Even if he did try to feast on him.
Suddenly, Tanjiro felt the urge to hit the temple demon with his sweat. He vaguely recalled his sweat…doing something for his sister.
He did so...
...all of a sudden, the burning ceased.
Shortly afterwards, the temple demon suddenly began to lose his monstrous appearance.
He started to change back to a human.
It was an astonishing experience.
"What happened? I was in the temple saying my prayers..." spoke the temple former demon.
"I changed him back into a human!" realized Tanjiro.
Nszuko's eyes widened with shock.
What a pleasant surprise.
"The last thing I saw was a man with a hat." noted the man.
Squirtle got the feeling that was the same man who attacked Tanjiro's family.
Urokodaki had seen this happen from a distance.
He could not believe his eyes.
This boy was special.
"In all my long years as a Demon Slayer and my short years as a retired Demon Slayer I've never seen anything like it." remarked Urokodaki.
Curious, Nezuko wondered if she could step in the sun. She felt that she herself had been purified.
She stepped in the sun...
...and didn't get burned at all.
Nezuko sighed in relief.
"Hey, Tanjiro! I can survive the sun!" exclaimed Nezuko with a smile on her face.
She really was an oddball among demons.
"Wait, does this mean you're human, again?" asked Tanjiro.
"Maybe I am!" exclaimed Nezuko.
Suddenly, Tanjiro noticed that she had fangs in her mouth.
"Sorry, you're still a demon." sympathized Nezuko's brother.
Nezuko sighed.
"Well, at least I won't burn up in the sun." noted Nezuko.
That sounded horrifying enough, but she had heard the screaming when the other demon had fallen victim to it.
It seemed that purifying Nezuko was going to be a bit more complicated than purifying that demon.
Urokodaki approached them.
"I take it you're here to learn how to become a demon slayer?" asksd Urododaki.
"Yes. I want to protect people from humans." nodded Tanjiro. The less people that died, the better.
"Very noble. But a word of advice. A kitchen knife isn't enough to take on a demon. You'll need a special sword designed for slaying them." explained the smart man.
"So I noticed." remarked Tanjiro.
"Also, always aim for the head. It's the only guaranteed chance you have of killing a demon." explained Urokodaki.
Tanjiro nodded.
"Still, it's impressive that you managed to survive a demon attack without a ninchirin sword." spoke the man.
Urokodaki proceeded to help Tanjiro learn how to use a sword.
Ir was hard work, but he was learning the basics.
However, one day while taking a well-deserved break from training, Tanjiro encountered a different kind of monster.
It was a Togepi.
"Are you lost?" asked Tanjiro. He was under the impression she wouldn't be by herself.
But he could quickly tell that something was wrong with Togepi.
Her shell was black instead of white, and she had purple eyes.
Suddenly, Togepi pounced on Tanjiro, and started pulling his hair.
"Aah!" exclaimed Tanjiro.
This baby Pokemon was more dangerous than she looked.
But at that very moment, Nezuko left the house.
Something had woken up from her nap.
Togepi sank her teeth into Tanjiro's hair.
"Aahhh!" exclaimed the boy.
Nezuko saw what was happening.
It was time to take some action.
Nezuko tried to reason with the Togepi.
"You're a Togepi, one of the most purehearted Pokemon! Don't hurt others!" exclaimed Nezuko.
Togepi's shell suddenly turned gray.
"You don't want to do this! This isn't who you are!" shouted the teenage girl.
Togepi's shell turned white.
At that very moment, the door to her heart suddenly opened.
Togepi approached Nezuko and shook her hand.
She had a wide grin on her face.
"Huh. I feel a sense of deja vu." noted Nezuko.
This drew Urokodaki's attention.
"I'm afraid that humans aren't the only ones who fall victim to demons. There are often times where they target Pokemon as well.' noted Urokodaki.
Squirtle remembered Giyu telling him that Pokemon were not safe from demons.
Was this what he was talking about?
As it turned out, it was exactly what he was talking about.
"The demons inject the Pokemon with their blood, shutting the doors to their hearts and turning them hostile against humans." explained Urokodaki.
"Squirtle?" asked a certain turtle Pokemon. Why would a demon want to do that?
"It greatly assists a demon in hunting humans. Once transformed into a Shadow Pokemon, the Pokemon will follow whatever commands are given and will help the demon in preventing their victims from escaping. Some Pokemon have enhanced hearing...enhanced smell...enhanced sight...which makes it all the easier for the demon to locate and attack humans."
"That's not good." spoke Tanjiro.
"It's not. This is why multiple Demon Slayers have taken up Pokemon training. It evens the odds against them." explained the former demon slayer.
Nezuko noted that made sense.
Now that she thought of it, didn't Tanjiro decide to train one himself?
She decided that she would adopt Togepi.
Togepi could use a Pokemon Trainer that could keep her safe.
"To make matters worse, Shadow Pokemon can survive in sunlight. This allows the demons to scout for victims, even when the sun is in the sky." warned Urokodaki.
Luckily, turning a Pokemon into a Shadow Pokemon didn't make them stronger, as was the case with a human. But it did make them more dangerous.
"At least I managed to purify this one." noted Nezuko.
"You're lucky you encountered such an innocuous Pokemon. I suspect other Shadow Pokemon won't be so easy to purify." warned Urokodaki.
Though it was reassuring that like demons, shadow Pokemon could be purified.
Nezuko asked if the temple ex-demon had done it to him before his humanity was restored.
But he shook his head.
"Thanks for saving me…I would have been ash if it weren't for you." spoke the temple man. And he would still be a demon.
Togepi remembered seeing a man wearing a hat with pale skin.
He scowled at Togepi before launching a drop of his blood at her. It seems he did not like creatures who are pure.
"That man again…" spoke Nezuko.
They should do something about him, shouldn't they?
The only problem was that they did not know where he was.
For now, perhaps it would be best if Tanjiro started training.
As tempting so it was to find this man, it would be a good idea to
"If you want to fight demons, you need to be strong like them. Nezuko, try lifting that tree by its roots." spoke Urokodaki.
Nezuko wondered if she could do it.
To be fair, Urokodaki seemed to know a lot about demons.
She decided to try that…
…and succeeded.
"Whoa!" exclaimed Nezuko.
Tanjiro saw his point. If Nezuko could lift a tree, then chances are he did need to work on his muscles.
Hs tried again, but only scratched the rock.
"This is hard." noted Tanjiro.
As it turned out, there were two Demon Slayers in training nearby.
Perhaps they too had experienced misfortune because of demons.
"Success doesn't come overnight." pointed out Sabito.
"It took me a long time to cut through it myself." admitted Makoto.
"Are these your apprentices too?" asked Tanjro.
"Yes, they are. You may work together with them to complete the courses I've designed for you." noted the demon slayer master.
Working together was often how Demon Slayers successfully completed their duties. It was very helpful in preventing them from becoming demon food.
"Selection exam?" asked Tanjiro.
"You survive for a week while fighting demons. You get days off, but it's still seven nights." explained Makoto.
That was what Sabito and herself were working on.
And they were almost ready.
Urokodaki taught Tanjiro how to use water breathing techniques.
Squirtle asked if he could help with that as well.
"Of course. Manipulating water is your speciality." noted Urododaki.
When Tanjiro got the hang of water breathing, he was able to slice through the rock.
Of course, it also helped that water worked well against rock. A wild rock Pokemon could attest to that.
Afterwards, the three demon slayer trainees ran through a mountain.
It was full of traps.
Squirtle fell victim to one.
"Squirtle!" exclaimed the water Pokemon.
He fell on his shell. He couldn't get up.
"Try rolling over!" exclaimed Makoto.
Squirtle nodded.
That worked well.
Squirtle thanked Makoto for telling him that.
This course was designed to increase their speed. Squirtle appreciated that since he was a turtle Pokemon. Though he wasn't that slow.
Eventually, their master was pleased with the results.
"You've done well. It is time for you to start the exam." spoke the water breathing master.
"Great!" exclaimed Tanjiro. He looked forward to it. Though he would be cautious.
"A word of advice. If you can, try purifying the demons instead of slaying them." noted Urokodaki.
People would be very happy to be reunited with their loved ones. Chances are they did not know what had befallen them. Though they mayhave been attacked by the demonized victim, just as Nezuko had attacked Tanjiro.
Tanjiro nodded. He now knew he could do so. And he would decidedly use it for good.
Off to the exam he went.
Urokodaki just hoped they survived. Before his apprentices…hadn't made it.
But these apprentices were special. He could feel it.
He waved them off along with Nezuko.
Now their quest of becoming demon slayers would really begin.
Unfortunately, being in a world of Pokemon isn't all good for demon slayers.
Luckuiy, you can open the door to a shadow Pokemon's heart. And Tanjiro can do that with humans too!
You likely noticed Sabito and Makomo are still alive. Why, you may ask? Well, good things need to happen to the characters for people to be invested in the story, in my opinion. So I think I'll let them survive.
I'll try not to go too far in the opposite direction, though.
