Sapphire would not look at Ruby. She would not look at Amethyst. She focused her vision on distant glimpses of futures. Drowning herself in possibilities that were as unlikely as a meteor crashing into beach city. Casting her vision into the far reaches of the galaxy into worlds she barely knew of. Her mind ached and her visions came in short confusing bursts.

When it became too much and tears leaked from her eye, the ice almost burying her. She would relent. Allowing her vision to snap back to the near future, to those she knew and had once loved.

It was mostly painless to look in on Amethyst, although it was endlessly boring to watch her aimlessly play in the kindergarten, but still it was a relief compared to the pain of turning her eye to Ruby.

Her lover seemed happy, playing with Pink Diamond and going on missions with Pearl. Her heart was stabbed with jealousy as Pearl and Ruby sat down to watch a sunset after they sent another bubble back to the temple.

It shouldn't be. She shouldn't care. Ruby wasn't her concern anymore. She couldn't go back to her and allow Pink to win. Pink had wanted them together for some sick reason and she could not let Pink win any longer.

"Greg!" Pearl's voice cut through to him as sharp as her blades.

"What do you want, Pearl?" Greg sighed, glancing over. "Can't you change a diaper yourself?"

"I did. Several." Pearl fumed. "You're supposed to be opening up the shop."

"You mean closing it?"

"No. Ruby and I have been here all night. I mean opening it."

"I can open the door if you want!" Ruby called out.

Greg chuckled "That's not exactly what it means, Buddy! Why didn't you say anything?" He asked Pearl, whose eyes immediately narrowed. "I did. Several times. You kept on watching your show. If I didn't know better, I would think there was a gem in that device."

"You already checked it! Twice!"

"Which is why I know better."

Greg's eyes trailed back to the screen. Money the cat had to be his favorite character, and this was the episode he got into a rivalry with the new dog. It was a really great bit, where Money was tricking the dog into the swimming pool right before the party - "Greg!" Pearl snapped at him.

"Alright. Alright. I'm getting up. You can go. See you next week."

Pearl hesitated "Greg…if you need more help. We can go on fewer missions. Come here more often."

"I don't need your help, Pearl! I can parent my own kid!"

"Of course. I shouldn't have said anything." She pursed her lips and turned away from him. "We fed Steven his breakfast, his diaper is clean. We will be on our way. See you next week."

Greg reluctantly turned off his TV. Pearl knelt before Steven, who toddlered over to her on unsure legs. "We'll be back next week Steven. Be good for your father."

Ruby hugged Steven carefully. "Miss you Steven."

And the gems were gone. "Hey Schtu-bal" He said, picking up Steven and giving him a hug and blowing a raspberry on his stomach. Steven laughed and grabbed his finger.

"Yeah. Let's open up the shop huh? Can't believe I got so distracted." He said. The gems hadn't locked the door, no surprise, so there wasn't much to do. He flipped the sign to open, one of them had put it on close.

He played with Steven for a few minutes, rolling a ball back and forth until Steven got bored and started chewing on the ball. "Fair enough Kid…wish life was as easy as it is for you." He looked out the window. No one was coming, realistically no one would be looking to get their car washed until past noon.

He pushed the button to turn back on the TV. "You're going to love this show, Schtu-bal."

Li'l Butler really was the best.

"Is this a new food?" Ruby asked as Pearl gave the donut bag a distrustful look. Greg glanced over on his way back to the TV. "What? Oh yeah. Steven's been going down to the donut shop to get them. He loves donuts."

"Well. I suppose if Steven likes them, they can't be too bad." Pearl allowed, looking around the car wash office in disgust "When was the last time you cleaned, Greg?" With two fingers she picked up a chaaaaps bag off the ground.

"I dunno like..maybe a month or two ago." Greg shrugged. For a second, he saw the room as Pearl must see it…a wreck. The floor rather than being covered in Steven's toys was littered with chaaaaps bags and pizza boxes, empty soda cans and some plastic bags of Steven's diapers tied up that he had meant to bring out to the trash and never had gotten too. His couch was covered in steven and his clothes that he threw there when they changed rather than bringing it out to the van like he meant to. "It's not that bad right?" He said. Pearl grimaced.

Ruby ignored both of them instead picking up an 18-month Steven and started trotting around with him on her shoulders. Steven laughed. "More. More" He chanted.

"I assume you won't complain if I clean for you?" Pearl asked.

"Knock yourself out, Pearl." Greg said, settling in front of the tv again.

It was easy to tune the gems out. Focus on a world where money made more problems than it fixed. Ignore Pearl cleaning up the messes he could never remember to get to. He barely heard Steven's giggles as Ruby changed his diaper.

Pearl returned to reading the dictionary after she cleaned, leaving the place more spotless than it had ever been, she was almost done with the R's and Ruby was grumbling that her name hadn't been in it. Ruby and Steven drew in coloring books with jumbo crayons Vadalia had brought over a while ago while Pearl read to them.

They only bothered Greg the next morning. He woke up with the TV still on and after glancing over and seeing them watching a sleeping Steven put in the next VHS. Li'l Butler was stopping a war between the Moneys and the Richingtons over who could make a better hedge. The Moneys had made a giant chess board hedge and the Richingtons had responded by making a whole hedge zoo. "You people have too much money!" Greg laughed and found Pearl in front of the TV. "Pearl!" He grumbled. She always did have a way of sticking herself in unwanted places.

"It's morning, Greg." She said loudly and clearly. Like she was talking to a very small child. He glared. "Okay, Pearl. Bye."

He found Ruby hugging his leg and patted her on the head "Bye Ruby." He said.

Pearl chanted off her regular list that Steven was fed, had slept and was in a clean diaper before leaving with Ruby.

"Hey Stchu bal. Come watch this with me." He said and helped Steven up on his lap.

They watched a few tapes, before Steven left, probably to get lunch at the big donut, the man who worked there always gave him a free donut.

Greg walked back in from washing the mayor's van. He had just leaned on the horn waiting for him until he came out. He was his least favorite customer for many reasons. Not only was washing the head annoying in its own right. But the mayor was so picky and complained about everything. Not to mention he never tipped.

"Steven, you wanna order a pizza or something?" He asked, coming back in. Drat, the last VHS had finished while he was washing the car. He would have to rewind or just skip to the next episode. "Steven?" He looked around. When was the last time he had seen him. He had gone to get a donut at lunch time- wait, no that wasn't today! That was yesterday! His son had been missing since yesterday!
