Chapter 15: Grandfather and Granddaughter
Rain was still falling by early morning, though it was not as heavy. A rock pigeon flew through the sky. It spotted the Firehouse and headed downward. It landed on the windowsill to Podcast and Phoebe's room. It shook its body, getting rid of excess water. It bobbed its head three times before moving one foot backward. It looked inside to see him sleeping on his side and her laying awake on her back. He faced the window while she stared up at the ceiling.
Phoebe sighed heavily as she put her arms behind her head. She hated it when she woke up and couldn't go back to sleep. She recalled all the nights she felt queasy and bolted for the bathroom to throw up during the first trimester. It usually brought Podcast in there. He went out of his way to comfort her every time that happened. Gary and Callie came to check on her three times in the middle of the night. She was grateful to all three of them for this.
She looked at Podcast as she started thinking about him. She had no doubt he would be helping with Gabrielle a lot. This was especially for feeding and changing her. She hoped he didn't get overprotective when their baby got older as she knew fathers tended to be that way with their daughters. She wondered if he would call her his little princess like Richard did to Sara in A Little Princess. She remembered when Oscar told her his parents took him and his sisters to see it in which they enjoyed it.
Her thoughts shifted to the rest of her family. She loved how Gary and Callie were looking forward to becoming grandparents. She had similar feelings regarding Trevor being an uncle. She wondered if her parents might have their own child together. She knew her mother would not be entering menopause for another ten years, so it was possible it could happen. At the same time, it was harder for a woman to get pregnant in her forties than it was in her twenties and thirties.
Phoebe huffed to herself. She decided she was tired of laying here and would go visit the nursery. She grabbed her glasses from her nightstand and put them on. She pushed the covers off as Podcast turned over with a soft sigh. She swung her legs over the side of the bed and placed her feet on the floor. She put her hands on her back before standing up slowly. She went over to her desk chair, where her robe hung over the top of it. She grabbed it, putting it on and tying it closed.
She headed out of the room and down the hallway. She came to the nursery in which she touched the doorknob. She turned it in a slow way. She opened the door, stepping inside and flipping the switch. The room was flooded with light. She looked around, her eyes settling on the cradle. She noticed the unicorn was gone. She went over to the cradle and lifted the pillow. She did not see the unicorn there.
"Damn," Phoebe whispered frustratingly. "Where is the unicorn? I know I left it here before I went to bed."
Phoebe scanned her surroundings. She spotted the unicorn sitting on the dresser. She sighed in relief as she went over there. She picked it up, hugging it to her chest. She wondered how it could have gotten there. She suspected Trevor did it as he occasionally went in here and moved things around for harmless fun. She didn't mind that as she found it funny, though she got annoyed when he turned the rocking chair upside down once.
She glanced at the picture on top of the dresser. It was of her sweet sixteen birthday party that was held in the Firehouse's kitchen on April 13. She, Podcast, Gary, Callie, and Trevor sat around the table. Peter, Dana, Oscar, Ronnie, Jeanette, Ray, Winston, and Janine stood behind them. Everyone had big smiles on his or her faces. The table was filled with presents. The walls and ceiling had decorations, including balloons and garland. She tried not to smile, but she couldn't help herself.
Phoebe was startled when she heard squeaking. She saw the rocking chair moving by itself. She made her way toward it slowly. Her heart began to beat a little faster. Her breathing turned to shudders. Suddenly, Egon appeared standing next to the chair. He had his hand on the back of it. She gasped in much surprise. He formed a warm smile on his face.
"You have a great view of the street from here, young one," he whispered and turned to her.
"Grandpa?" she responded, feeling her body shake.
"Hello, Phoebe," Egon said, his smile growing wider. He made his way over to her. He stopped close to her. "It is good to see you."
"I thought you—" Phoebe started.
"Moved on?" Egon finished with a soft chuckle. "I did, but that doesn't mean I can't come see you. I thought it was time for a little visit. You should know I always had the ability to speak. I just chose to be silent. I was the one who moved the unicorn to the dresser. It is cute."
"It is good to see you," Phoebe said, her hands going to her stomach. "A lot has changed since we saw you last."
"I am aware," Egon replied, looking around. "I saw the picture on the dresser. I noticed you were wearing a maternity dress. It wasn't hard to guess what had happened to you." He settled his eyes on her. "You and Podcast looked very happy. You are very fortunate he is in your baby's life. Most dads run for the hills when moms reveal their pregnancies."
"If you want to know, we are having a girl. We named her Gabrielle after the Amazon queen and Xena's best friend," Phoebe explained proudly.
"A great-granddaughter named Gabrielle. I like that," Egon said, sighing in a soft manner. "I watched Xena: Warrior Princess throughout its entire run. I was amazed at the development of so many characters. I can see why it was your mother's favorite show when she was a teen."
"Unfortunately, many movies and shows have been absolute trash over the last several years. It does not matter what political persuasion they are," Phoebe mumbled, shaking her head in disbelief. "They are the same trash."
"I know," Egon said, shaking his head in disbelief. "The passion for filmmaking is mostly gone. Only a few filmmakers still have it. James Cameron is one of them. Avatar: Fire and Ash is releasing in theaters this December."
"The old 'it will flop' crowd is crowing again," Phoebe grumbled, rolling her eyes. "You never underestimate James Cameron. He made three of the top five movies of all time. He is the only director to have three movies gross over two billion at the box office."
Egon pressed his lips together before going back to the window. He could see the rain getting a little heavier. Phoebe came to his side. She suppressed a yawn. She tried again with another one, but she couldn't help herself.
"It's been raining every night over the last few days," Phoebe mumbled, sighing heavily. "It sucks."
"I do not blame you for feeling that way. Summer can bring heavy rain for a full week. The no rain comes for weeks," Egon replied in a gentle manner. "It happens in Summerville just as much as it does in New York City and Chicago."
"All three areas get lots of snow during the winter," Phoebe added.
"Every snowstorm I saw in Summerville was absolutely beautiful. There was nothing better than seeing snow for miles as I explored the countryside. After the roads were cleared, that is," Egon said.
She chuckled. "Our first winter there was pretty cold. At least you can warm up. It is difficult to cool off unless you are near an air conditioner or freezer."
He nodded in agreement. "That is true."
Phoebe went over to the chair and sat down. The rain blew sideways in a gust of wind. It became straight very quickly. She touched her temple before running her tongue all over the inside of her mouth.
"You won't believe this, but the Ghostbusters are on good terms with Mayor Peck now," Phoebe said, looking up at her grandfather.
"Really?" Egon whispered surprisingly.
"We are not exactly friends with him. I don't think we will ever be, but he sees we are very valuable. His encounter with a prank-pulling ghost made him a believer. He was unable to do his job because of it. Vice Mayor Cooper was also a victim of it. This happened two months after we defeated Garraka. Mom and Dad told me he heard all sorts of rumors because I was absent from the team. One rumor was I had been abducted by space aliens," Phoebe explained.
"The public will believe anything, even if it is absolutely ridiculous," Egon grumbled annoyingly.
"It's the way of the world. There is not a damn thing we can do about it," Phoebe commented.
Egon sighed. "Some stories do sound ridiculous, but they are true."
"I know, right?" Phoebe asked with a raised eyebrow. "Some people believe they were abducted by aliens. It may or may not be true. Who knows?"
"I investigated one alleged alien abduction during my time in Summerville. I was unable to find any evidence it happened," Egon admitted.
"If there is life elsewhere in the universe, I wonder if it would be friendly to us," Phoebe said curiously.
"It may or may not be. Who knows?" Egon asked and chuckled to himself.
Phoebe exhaled. "Yep."
Phoebe looked out the window once more. She sniffled and wiped a tear from her eye. She choked back a sob. Egon heard it and formed a concerned expression on his face.
"What is it, Phoebe?" Egon wondered.
"I don't know if I could tell you," Phoebe responded, tears falling from her eyes.
"Come on. You can tell me," Egon assured.
"Okay," Phoebe replied and took a deep breath. "My birth father is…is…"
"What?" Egon commented and tilted his head. "Dino is what?"
"He…he…" Phoebe muttered, unsure if she could continue.
"Come on," Egon insisted. "Tell me what is going on with that man."
"My birth father and his girlfriend are living in New York City," Phoebe said in determination. "They moved here recently."
Egon gasped in a bit of shock. He took a closer look at Phoebe, wondering if he heard wrong. He realized she was telling the truth. She glanced up at him, her breathing turning into shudders.
"It sounds crazy, but Dino came back into our lives six years after he completely disappeared," Phoebe said honestly. "I did some research on where he and Mina might be living. It turns out they are living in Dana's old apartment on the Upper East Side."
"That means they are not far from here," Egon whispered, cringing a bit.
"Unfortunately," Phoebe admitted with a nod.
"I had a newspaper clipping about your mom marrying him. I could tell something was off about him," Egon commented, huffing softly. "I was proven right when an article said they were divorcing due to his infidelity."
"Mom, Dad, Trevor, Lucky, Podcast, Ray, and I encountered them at Hobbie's Place. We are good friends with Hobbie. He was our waiter for the night. Dino complained about us being loud because I was throwing sausages into Dad's mouth. They acted very snooty because they were wealthy. She got mad because I told the truth about him. He made some ugly comments about me. Dad became furious and grabbed him by his shirt. He told him to leave me alone. Dino told him to punch him. Hobbie intervened and believed Dad's explanation of the situation. He told the couple to leave us alone or get thrown out. They agreed and decided to leave," Phoebe explained.
"I knew your mom had found the right man. I knew it," Egon said, a small smile crossing his lips.
"Dad is everything Dino lost the chance to be," Phoebe said bluntly. "Dino will never realize he lost the best thing that ever happened to him. He and Mina looked so jealous when Mom and Ray explained the history of the Ghostbusters to them. They knew their lives had not been all that fulfilling."
"It is better to live a short life full of adventure than a long one that is boring," Egon said honestly.
"Mina thinks she is some prize," Phoebe said with a roll of her eyes. "I see her as a bimbo. She looked a little clueless."
"I knew several women like Mina. They weren't wealthy, but they were pretty. Almost all of them were blond. It gave credit to the term of dumb blonde," Egon murmured.
"I hope we do not encounter that bastard and his bitch again," Phoebe growled in bitterness. "They left a bad taste in my mouth."
"I do not blame you. Try not to focus on that. Focus on your baby," Egon encouraged in a gentle manner. "You won't have a whole lot of time for anything else once she comes into the world."
"Podcast and I decided to be homeschooled. Jerry Piker is our tutor. We managed to get a little ahead of our peers," Phoebe said and smiled in much warmth.
"I am happy for you two," Egon said and touched her shoulder. "Don't let people get you down. You are worth something."
Phoebe sighed contently before looking out the window. The rain went sideways in the gusty wind once more. It became straight right after.
