Chapter III
"Frodo Baggins?", Eruanna walked down the corridor, Glorfindel following her. "He's Bilbo's nephew and heir", Glorfindel said. Bilbo, the hobbit previously affiliated with Thorin's company as Eruanna had been, had arrived seventeen years earlier, now in advanced age. Eruanna and Bilbo had been happy to see each other again and their reunion had been spent with Bilbo talking excitedly about his years in Bag End with Frodo, whom he had taken in as his heir and nephew.
Eruanna had heard of the young hobbit but hadn't given him much of a thought until now. "He's in Rivendell to visit his uncle and get an injury treated, I take it? After all, that's why daeradar sent you to get him."
"He was stabbed by a ringwraith. One of the Nine. They are among the most powerful servants of Elrond. We were lucky to get him back when he did, otherwise he would have already been lost."
"A Nazgûl?", Eruanna was stunned. "Why were they hunting down a poor hobbit?" "Frodo has the One Ring. From what I heard, he got it from Bilbo."
The news shook Eruanna to her core. She whipped around and faced Glorfindel, confused. "How on Middle-Earth did Bilbo acquire that Ring and not get possessed by it?"
"He knew not of the darkness binding it. Hobbits seem to have extreme resilience to such evil", Glorfindel said. "As for how he got it, he said he found it during the Quest for Erebor but it seems he told no one in the company that he had it."
"Not even me", Eruanna murmured. Her mind scraped out the memories from the Quest that had been buried in her brain for decades, wondering how Bilbo could've possibly acquired the Ring. Maybe the goblin cave, where he turned up after the death of the Goblin King, mysteriously.
Glorfindel watched the young Princess. She'd already seen so many years and had done things most young elves didn't do. She'd helped kill Smaug for Valar's sake. He would have gladly laid his life down for her just as she would for the elves. Her smart mind and lovely demeanor made her all the more worthy of respect.
"Your daeradar wishes for you to join the secret council being held. Many have been summoned", Glorfindel said.
"I shall be there then", responded the Princess.
Frodo wandered around Imladris, pleased to no longer be feeling the sting of the Nazgûl weapon. He had woken up in the Hidden Valley, in a daze, and seen Gandalf, much to the young hobbit's relief.
However, troubles still lingered in Frodo's mind, the Ring being the most prominent of them all. A great council was to be called and the young hobbit felt nervous. Beings from all over Middle Earth to decide what to do with the golden jewel that was Sauron's key to holding dominion over Middle Earth.
Just then, Frodo heard five booming roars. A turquoise dragon shot up into the sky followed by a white dragon and then an orange one. A black dragon and a golden dragon followed them not long after. The dragons soared over Imladris and Frodo watched them, half expecting the elves to panic. It only hit him a few seconds later that these were Ceveniel, Helegiel, Naurion, Faroniel and Sûlion, the five elemental dragons his uncle Bilbo had told him about.
That meant their mistress was nearby.
It was then Frodo beheld her, Eruanna, the Dragoness. To those who had never seen her, she seemed more like a fairytale but to those that had seen her, she was the closest thing to a God that walked Middle Earth. Just as her aunt, Arwen, was called Undomiel, Eruanna was called Úlumiel, the Everstar of her people.
Her long hair was black. It was woven with colorful flowers and white pearls. Her skin was clear and shined like porcelain. She had deep blue eyes that reflected the Sundering Sea. Eruanna was the granddaughter of Lord Elrond of Imladris and King Thranduil of the Woodland Realm, heiress to three elven realms. She was as noble as the Elven Kings and Queens of old, as brave as a dwarven warrior and as fair as a child of the Valar.
Her beauty was otherworldly and Frodo now understood Bilbo's amazement of her. She then looked up and her eyes met Frodo's and he found herself entranced by her gaze. She smiled at him and placed a hand on her heart, an Elven greeting. He smiled and nodded to her.
Elrond had called a Great Council for people all over Middle Earth. Dwarves, men and elves each had their representatives come. Eruanna's father, Prince Legolas, was coming to represent the Woodland Realm.
It was early that morning on October 25, 3018 when Eruanna, Elrond and Hiriel came out to greet him. Legolas rode in on his horse dressed in a long grey cape hiding his clothes which seemed to blend into the forest. "Legolas", Hiriel called. Legolas reached her in a few confident strides, taking her in his arms and kissing her passionately. He then bowed his head to Lord Elrond.
"Elrond, I take it this council has to do with Sauron", Legolas said. Elrond nodded. "Not just Sauron but the One Ring itself. The One Ring has been found", Elrond stated. Legolas' eyes went wide at the information but he said nothing.
"Ada!", Eruanna cried out as she flung herself into her father's arms. "Ah! I knew I was missing someone!", Legolas said, hugging his daughter fiercely. When Eruanna pulled away, Legolas got a good look at her. Eruanna had become all the more beautiful, with her long black hair tumbling down past her waist and her deep blue eyes telling stories with every gaze. Her skin was fair and luminous like Varda's stars.
Just then, Ceveniel, Helegiel, Naurion, Faroniel and Sûlion flew overhead and Legolas marveled at how large the dragons were. Helegiel landed nearby and studied Legolas intensely for a moment before flying off. He looked at his daughter. "Your daeradar informed me of the vision you had of Sauron", Legolas said, concerned.
"Do not worry. I haven't had any since. Imladris keeps his poisonous influence away."
The council gathered that afternoon. Eruanna was permitted to attend since Elrond deemed it as a "good lesson in diplomacy." Eruanna sat next to her father with Glorfindel and Erestor, Elrond's head counselor. Legolas sat a few feet away from them with some other elves. There were also some men and dwarves along with Gandalf and Frodo. Eruanna's dragons shrunk in size and went to accompany her, Ceveniel sitting on her right shoulder, Helegiel coiled around her left arm and Naurion and Faroniel coiled in her lap. Sûlion was wrapped around her neck, careful to not choke her.
Eruanna noticed Aragorn among them. Aragorn had come back from his travels to take part in the council. Her aunt, Arwen, had been over the moon when he returned and Eruanna knew of the romance blossoming between them. Aragorn also noticed Eruanna and the old friends exchanged smiles. Eruanna sent him a silent greeting before turning her attention back to the council.
"Strangers from distant lands, friends of old, you have been summoned here to answer the threat of Mordor", Elrond began. "Middle Earth stands upon the brink of destruction. None can escape it. You will unite or you will fall. Each race is bound to this fate - this one doom." Elrond gestured to the pedestal in the middle of the room. "Bring forth the Ring Frodo", he commanded. The hobbit, Frodo Baggins, did as he was told, setting the Ring on the pedestal.
Unsettled murmurs broke out between all of the people, especially the men and dwarves. Out of nowhere, one of them rose up.
"In a dream, I saw the Eastern sky grow dark. But in the West, a pale light lingered. A voice was crying 'Your doom is near at hand. Isildur's bane is found'", Boromir of Gondor got up and moved towards the ring, reaching out his hand. "Isildur's bane", he whispered.
Elrond leapt up. "Boromir!", he shouted. Gandalf stood.
"Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul. (One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the Darkness bind them.)"
The wizard chanted and suddenly the sky got darker. When he was finished, everything turned back to normal, but everyone was horrified. Boromir himself looked shocked. He sat back down. Eruanna looked at him and their eyes met. She sensed something about his intentions. They weren't good but they weren't evil either. She knew not what to make of it.
"Never before has any voice uttered the words of the tongue here in Imladris!", Elrond chided. "I do not ask your pardon Master Elrond, but the Black Speech of Mordor may yet be heard in every corner of the west! The Ring is all together evil!", Gandalf replied, giving Boromir one final glare.
But Boromir now seemed unperturbed. "It is a gift. A gift to the foes of Mordor! Why not use this Ring? Long has my father, the Steward of Gondor, kept the forces of Mordor at bay. By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe! Give Gondor the weapon of the enemy. Let us use it against him!", Boromir shouted.
"You cannot wield it! None of us can! The One Ring answers to Sauron alone. It has no other master!", Aragorn snapped.
"And what would a ranger know of this matter?", Boromir asked with scorn.
"This is no mere ranger", Legolas said, standing up. "He is Aragorn, son of Arathorn. You owe him your allegiance."
"Aragorn? This is Isildur's heir?", Boromir asked.
"And heir to the throne of Gondor", Eruanna added. "Havo dad Legolas (Sit down Legolas)", Aragorn said to his friend, not wanting a fight to break out. "Hannon le", he mouthed to Eruanna.
Boromir looked at Eruanna and Aragorn with scorn. "Gondor has no King. Gondor needs no King."
"And if you did get the Ring, what do you intend on doing with it?", Eruanna asked. "Wearing it? We all know how it turned out for Isildur, do we not? It got him killed. Do you have a death wish, mortal? The Doom of Men will happily grant it to you", Eruanna said.
Though Boromir did well at hiding it, part of him was terrified of the Mistress of Dragons. He watched her dragons growl threateningly at him, especially Naurion and Sûlion, who looked more than ready to rip him apart. He knew Eruanna was the granddaughter of Thranduil and Elrond.
Boromir knew he wouldn't try anything that could risk the wrath of the most powerful elven lords on Middle Earth.
"Eruanna and Aragorn are right, we cannot use it", Gandalf confirmed. "You have only one choice. The Ring must be destroyed", Elrond said.
"Then what are we waiting for?", a dwarf leapt up. Grabbing his axe, he went to smash the Ring only to have his axe broken and the Ring unaffected. Eruanna smirked. Frodo winced and Eruanna's smirk was quickly replaced by a look of concern as she looked at the hobbit. Her heart wept for him. Gandalf also seemed concerned. Elrond spoke up.
"The Ring cannot be destroyed, Gimli, son of Gloin, by any craft that we here possess. The Ring was made in the fires of Mount Doom. Only there can it be unmade. It must be taken deep into Mordor and cast back into the fiery chasm from whence it came", Elrond said. "One of you must do this."
A silence was cast over the council before Boromir spoke up. "One does not simply walk into Mordor. "Its black gates are guarded by more than just Orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep. And the great Eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland. Riddled with fire and ash and dust. The very air you breathe is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. It is folly!."
Legolas stood. "Have you heard nothing Lord Elrond has said? The Ring must be destroyed!." "And I suppose you think you are the one to do it!", Gimli snapped.
"And if we fail, what then? What happens when Sauron takes back what is his?", Boromir shouted. "I will be dead before I see the Ring in the hands of an elf! Never trust an elf!", Gimli snapped.
The council erupted into commotion, elves, men and dwarves bickering over what had to be done. Eruanna shook her head and looked down, hearing Gandalf getting up and arguing. Eruanna closed her eyes and Glorfindel noticed. Exchanging a concerned look with Erestor, he put his hand on Eruanna's shoulder.
Just then, Frodo leapt up. "I will take it!", he shouted. The council looked at him in shock. "I will take the Ring to Mordor!", he declared. "Though I do not know the way." Gandalf looked at his hobbit friend. "I will help you bear this burden, Frodo Baggins, so long as it is yours to bear", Gandalf said, placing a hand on the hobbit's shoulder. Aragorn stood up.
"If by my life or death, I can protect you, I will. You have my sword", Aragorn said. Eruanna smiled at Aragorn with pride.
"And you have my bow", Legolas said, walking over to them. Eruanna's eyes widened in horror and she and Elrond exchanged worried glances.
"And my axe!", Gimli said.
Boromir walked towards him. "You carry the fate of us all little one, if this is indeed the will of the council, then Gondor will see it done", Boromir said, standing before Frodo.
"Heh!", Sam jumped out of his hiding place much to everyone's surprise. "Mister Frodo is not going anywhere without me!", Sam said. "No, indeed it is hardly possible to separate the two of you even when he is summoned to a secret council and you are not", Elrond said, amused.
Just then, two other hobbits, Pippin and Merry, who had followed Sam and Frodo leapt out. "Wait! We are coming too!", they ran to join them. "You'd have to send us home tied up in a stack to stop us!", Merry said. "Anyway, you need people of intelligence on this sort of mission, quest... thing", Pippin said. "Well that rules you out Pip", Merry teased.
"Nine companions. So be it. You shall be the Fellowship of the Ring", Elrond said, looking at the group. "Great!", Pippin said. He looked at Eruanna. "Can we use a dragon?." Eruanna smirked. "No", she responded. But in her heart she worried for the group, especially Aragorn and her father.
