It was Eustace's birthday tomorrow, and his family were setting up for the party tomorrow. Although, Shaggy and Scooby were not looking forward to this at all.
"Oh, Eustace, aren't you excited about your birthday party?" Muriel asked, as she made some paper hats.
Shaggy was honestly surprise that his aunt would throw a party for her husband, for everything he knew of his uncle he wasn't a particularly kind man, yet Muriel still loved him, "Aunt Muriel, like, should we even throw a birthday party for Uncle Eustace? I know you love him, but all he ever does is act like a real grump to everyone around here."
"Reah, he just watches TV, sit in his chair reading his newspaper and not to mention that he always messing around with us, especially me and Rourage!" Scooby argued, in agreement, he didn't wanna celebrate this old farmer's birthday at all, not after all he has done with him and his family through out the summer.
Courage was blowing up a balloon, for although, almost using air in the process.
"As much as I hate to agree with someone like that stupid nephew or those two stupid dogs, they're right about one thing, ain't gonna be no party," Eustace agreed, as he popped the balloon with a needle.
The remains of it being on Courage's face. Sighing, Scooby began to take off the pieces.
"See what we mean, Aunt Muriel?" Shaggy pointed out, clearly proving out his message.
"Now boys," Muriel lectured, "I know Eustace maybe hard to get along with, but I know he has a good heart and he is your uncle Shaggy and my husband, he at least deserves some respect."
Shaggy sighed in annoyance, Like, since when? He couldn't think of one kind thing he has done since he and Scooby got here.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door.
"A visitor," Muriel said happily as she got up and went over to the door.
Concerned and curious, Shaggy, Scooby and Courage got up and headed over as well, opening the door, the family were slightly confused when they didn't immediately see someone.
"Yes?"
"Any small change to help a poor soul?" A familiar voice asked. Looking down, the family saw someone they didn't see in a while, it was Shirley.
The medium who help the family connected Eustace's dead brother Horst, mostly because Eustace wanted that key to the box his brother had left. But the box ended up being cursed, and it took ages to get Eustace out of there.
"Oh, of course," Muriel said, as she pulled out her giant purse and began to dig around. "Just a moment. Oh, here's a little something dear," she said handing Shirley a large bag of coins.
Shaggy looked how skinny Shirley was and felt sorry for her. "And like, here's a box of a dozen donuts, I got today," Shaggy said with a grin and a pat to his belly, as he handed the chihuahua the box of donuts. "And don't worry, I got plenty of them for me and my pal Scooby."
"Reah," Scooby added, before chuckling.
"And you must be hungry, I just baked it this morning," Muriel said, as she somehow pulled out an intact pie from her purse that she stored there for some reason. She then pulled out tea set and gave it to her. "Oh, and that would go lovely with a cup of tea."
Shirley, then turned to Scooby and Courage, "How about you dogs?"
Scooby grabbed a box of Scooby Snacks, "Rhere's a box of Scooby Snacks, you should try some. Rand I gave a lot more too." he added with a chuckle and with a big grin on his face.
"I also have something that you need," Courage answered, before taking out some pliers, he then opened his mouth and used the pliers to take out his gold tooth feeling a bit throbbing on his gum, as he give it to Shirley.
"Like, didn't know the little pink guy had a gold tooth," Shaggy said, really surprised.
"Reither did I," Scooby said also surprised as well, as he watched Courage lick the spout in his mouth where his tooth was.
"Thank you for your kindness," Shirley said in gratitude, before looking at Eustace. "What about the bald one?"
Shaggy turned his gaze towards his uncle, "Like, You mean Uncle Eustace?" he asked to which she nodded.
"Yes, Eustace, you must have something to give," Muriel called out to him.
Eustace growled slightly before getting up and walking towards the family.
"Yeah, I got something to give. THE BOOT!" Eustace scowled, slamming the door.
"Like, what the heck man!?" Shaggy asked in anger, as he opened the door for Shirley, who had pie all over her face, the tea set was broken, and the box of donuts were everywhere.
Eustace was laughing cruelly at Shirley's mess.
"I'm so sorry Shirley," Courage took out a napkin and gave it to Shirley.
Shirley didn't respond, instead, she played a saxophone.
Courage was startled and winced by the instrument. Shaggy and Scooby got nervous, as the trio's stomachs did fearful flips, whatever is about to happen, it won't be good.
"Upon your shiny head, a curse," Shirley said.
"Curse/Rurse!?" Shaggy, Scooby and Courage echoed in unison.
Shirley didn't say anything as she continued, to play with the saxophone, saying with every warning. "Long as your soul lives in your purse. And with your coins you cannot part... Your sky shall be dark as your heart," Shriely said ominously.
"Goobledygook, ain't no such things as curses," Eustace shouted, slamming the door once again and he went to the kitchen, unknowingly now has a rain cloud on his head. "And there ain't no such thing as parties neither!"
Courage screamed when he saw a cloud form above Eustace.
"Oh my," Muriel said in surprise.
"Huh, well that can't be good for Uncle Eustace," Shaggy said, this was not the curse he was expecting Shirley had put on him.
"Reah..."Scooby nodded, pausing for a moment before changing the subject ."...well, I'm gonna go grab a quick bite," he announced before walking to the kitchen.
"Right behind you, Scoob!" Shaggy agreed, before following his dog.
Courage's jaw dropped in disbelief, there are no other words to describe the shock on Courage's face. He immediately raced up to his friends, as they went to the dining room. "Shaggy, Scooby, where are you two going? Shouldn't we do something to help lift Shirley's curse?" he asked the hungry duo with a confused look.
"Ro way, why should we? Rustace deserved that for being such a big jerk! Resides, it's his problem, not ours," Scooby argued.
Courage couldn't believe how Scooby could be so inconsiderate about Eustace's predicament. "Guys, come on! I know the farmer can be a real bully all the time, but he's still Muriel's husband!" Courage countered, trying to make a reason to help the grumpy farmer.
"Like, I hate to say it, little pink dude, but I'm with Scooby on this one. Even though he's my uncle, Uncle Eustace always treats us like a bunch of pests, who deserved to be kicked around for every little small thing!" Shaggy responded, with an expression of disagreement.
"Re never appreciates anything we do for him, so why should even care about what happens to him?" Scooby protested, bluntly.
"Because he's also a part of this family too!" Courage firmly yet gently answered. "Even if he scares me to death with that creepy mask of his all the time, I'm not just gonna sit here and do nothing while I let something bad happens to one of my owners, no matter how kind or mean they are. Which is why I'm gonna try and figure out a way to lift the curse, even if you guys won't help me!"
Courage went back to the living room, while Shaggy and Scooby stood there, wondering what to do as they give uncertain glances at each other. They're in shock that Courage would help out a greedy heartless selfish farmer like Eustace, but they're at loss as to how to handle it. They fell in line and went into the kitchen, not knowing what else to do.
Courage give a flash disappointed glance at his friends, he turned away. He couldn't believe his friends shrugging off his warning like it meant nothing. "Looks like I'm really am on my own," he lamented to himself, as far as Courage was concerned, Shaggy and Scooby could do what they liked.
Later in the afternoon, the family were making cookies for Eustace's birthday party.
"Like, the only good part of setting up Uncle Eustace's birthday party is baking cookies, right Scoob?" Shaggy asked, finding the silver lining, of setting up the party.
"Reah," Scooby agreed, before chuckling.
Courage winced, normally he would join conversations with his friends, but now what has happened lately, he didn't feel like chatting with them today. He was worried if they're still friends, even he never had any real friends before. Sure he made friends with the Hunchback a month ago, but he doesn't know if he'll ever see him again. He knew that it was unlikely he'll ever see him again.
Hearing some footsteps, the family looked up and saw Eustace walking towards them with a raincoat on.
"Eustace, where are you going?" Muriel asked, as she stopped rolling out some more dough for the cookies.
"To the picture show," Eustace answered.
"Eustace! The Curse!" Muriel reminded him.
"There ain't no curse," Eustace said irritated, as if to spite him, the cloud let out a thunder strike and began to pour even more.
"Um, like, Uncle Eustace, there's a rain cloud on your head," Shaggy retorted, dryly, he wanted to facepalm his head so badly on how stupid his uncle was acting right now.
"Bah!" Eustace hissed, not heating his nephew's warning.
"Why don't you stay and help with the party?" Muriel suggested.
"I ain't helping with no party, cause there ain't going to be no party," Eustace bitterly answered.
The storm increased in intensity even more so which forced Eustace to put up the hood of his coat. He then walked out the door to his truck.
"Oh, my," Muriel said, with concern glazing in her eyes.
Shaggy, and Scooby shook their heads, at the old man, and continued to make star shape cookies, while Courage looks on in worry, he knew it was a matter of time, for he knew things will only get worse.
Muriel hang up the banger that said, 'Happy Birthday Eustace' with a hammer and nails. "How's that boys?"
"Looks, pretty good Muriel," Courage said, as he held up Muriel on his shoulders, so she could held the banger up above.
"Like, good Aunt Muriel," Shaggy replied, still less enthusiastic about the party, as much as Scooby.
"Reah, I guess," Scooby added, dryly.
Next, Muriel, Shaggy, Scooby and Courage were wearing iron shields, to make a sculpture of Eustace out on iron, using a torch.
"Do you think Eustace will like it?" Muriel asked.
The trio didn't say anything, but nodded, they really didn't know if Eustace will really like his sculpture, he was really hard to please. Muriel took this as a yes, as she continued to fire up the sculpture.
In the middle of the night, Muriel woke Courage gently rubbed by rubbing his back, as the pink beagle slowly opened his eyes and looked at his owner.
"Courage, could you give the blanket to Eustace? He's on the roof," Muriel instructed, as she handed the blanket to her dog.
Fuzzy-headed, Courage at first confused, of where Eustace could be at this time of night, then he look over to his empty spot. And half of the bed was wet. Muriel must of send Eustace to sleep outside. He give her a nod of acknowledgment and went outside the bedroom and into the hallway.
He thought of waking up his friends for help, but figure they didn't want to help. After all they had not been wanting to do with him lately, so he was gonna have to do it by himself. Courage felt a pang of regret for their lost friendship, the quarrel with his friends still haunted him. Without the help and closeness he had shared with them for a month, Courage felt utterly alone on his mission.
But he couldn't give up on Muriel's husband either, it was up to him to lift his curse. He really wished he could tell Muriel what troubles he was having lately, but he knew it was futile since, he could never communicate with her.
Courage manage to make his way to the roof. Getting there, the pink beagle was startled to see how Eustace who is just now wrestling with the television antenna.
"GET OFF MY ROOF! I DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE!" Eustace shouted.
Alarmed Courage back away, had he gone mad? But as he did, Courage noticed something off about him. "Where are his glasses?" he asked himself, as he looked around. Spotting them nearby, but as he did, Eustace finally noticed the pink beagle.
"HUH?" Eustace asked surprised looking over at Courage who was now holding the blanket. He then growled. "NO SOLICITORS!"
Courage barley had the time to react as he scream and Eustace charged at him, and grabbed him by the torso.
"NOW YOU GET! WE DON'T WANT ANY!" Eustace roared, as he threw Courage off the roof with the blanket he was carrying.
And now, Eustace was alone with a blanket, a bed, glasses or anything.
Courage opened the door, only to reveal Muriel, watching TV, looking frustrated as the TV and the remote were acting wonky. Courage's heart was pounding, he was trembling, as he took in of what just happened up on the roof with Eustace.
"Muriel! The farmer is acting crazy! He lost his glasses and he's attacking the antenna!" Courage screeched.
"Oh Courage, I couldn't really sleep. Knowing that Eustace was on the roof and all." Muriel answered while looking to the roof. The sound of the storm still raging. "But there's something wrong with the reception."
Muriel wasn't aware that Eustace was on the antenna, hanging for dear life.
It was noon the next day and all the guests had arrived, although only two other people were invited that actually showed up. And they were Dr. Vindaloo and Ma Bagge, Shaggy was surprised that his aunt actually invited Ma, considering she didn't like her. The 'party' was in full swing.
"Good to see ya," Ma said to Shaggy, who was uncomfortable, with her being only nice to her great great grandson.
"Uh, like, hi," Shaggy said awkwardly, before getting snacks with Scooby. "Like, the the other good part of this party is the snacks Scoob," he whispered to the Great Dane.
"Rou said Raggy," Scooby agreed, as he stack up food for the party.
"Care for one Ma?" Courage asked as he showed her the plate full of hors d'oeuvres.
She took one and ate it, only to spit it out a moment later.
"YUCK!" Ma shouted disgusted, before taking a sip of her drink.
"I'll take that as a no..." Courage made a neutral facial expression, as he sniffed the hors d'oeuvres.
"Rain or no rain, that man should really come to his own birthday party," Muriel said getting upset at her husband, as she opened the door of the heater. "EUSTACE! GET DOWN THIS INSTANT!
Muriel, waited for him to responded, but didn't get one. Annoyed, she shouted to him again, "EUSTACE, DID YOU HEAR ME?! WHAT ARE YOU DOING UP THERE?! YOUR GUESTS ARE WAITING!"
Everyone, waited for a few moments before, they've heard what sound like loud banging coming from the heater.
"Like, what on earth?" Shaggy asked.
His answer came in the form of Eustace emerging from the heater covered head to toe in soot and ash. And despite the soot covering Eustace, he was only in his boxers, he screamed while waving a board in his hand.
Scooby, Shaggy, Courage Dr. Vindaloo and Ma Bagge screamed in sudden fear, before Shaggy, Scooby and Courage hid behind Muriel, and Ma and Dr. Vindaloo ran away.
"Oh, my, now see what you have gone and done Eustace! You've scared off your guests," Muriel scolded.
"Huh?" Eustace asked confused, before turning to his family.
"Dude, put some clothes on," Shaggy suggested, not liking seeing his uncle nude.
"You're leaving a ring on the floor, here stand on this coaster," Muriel scolded while grabbing a coaster from somewhere.
"YOU CAN'T FOOL ME!" Eustace shouted turning to Muriel.
"Rum, come again?" Scooby asked confused. Rhat is he getting at?
"OOH! YOU'RE NOT MURIEL!" Eustace exclaimed confused.
"What are you saying man? I am Muriel," Muriel said, equally confused.
Eustace than grabbed Muriel and pinned her to the ground.
"One, two, three, I win." Eustace mocked as he kept Muriel pinned to the floor.
Courage screamed in shock, while Shaggy and Scooby looked on in horror and confusion.
"UNCLE EUSTACE! STOP!" Shaggy screamed in shock, as he tried to grab Eustace and force him off, but the combination of soot, ash and water made his grip slippery, which he used to push his nephew away from him.
Scooby tried to intervene and get Eustace off but he was surprisingly quick and went back to the roof through the heater.
Courage screamed again, only to sound like that of a horn before sounding like a horse. He then turned to his friends giving them glare, becoming frustrated that his friends didn't take his warnings seriously yesterday. "Now do you see why we need to get rid of the curse?" he stated.
"Like, we didn't think it would go this far," Shaggy shot back.
"You know, none of this would of happened if you and Scooby not ignore my warnings! But did you listen to me!? No, not you, not mister NOT-CARING-ABOUT-HIS-UNCLE!" Courage snarled.
Scooby covered his ears with his paws and whimpered, the sounds of his companions' verbal battle battle caused him to sink to the floor.
"Oh like, come on little pink dude, so what if Uncle Eustace has Aunt Muriel on the roof, he just got a little out of hand," Shaggy pointed out.
"A little out of hand!?" Courage echoed, "Shag, a little out of hand is the farmer losing his mind! HE ATTACKED MURIEL FOR NO REASON AND SCARED US AND THE GUESTS!" Courage snapped.
"Oh come on, like it's not like Aunt Muriel is being attack by a creepy creature of the week!" Shaggy crossed his arms.
"When are you going to stop making jokes and take things seriously!?" Courage asked, between clenched teeth.
"Oh get off my back!" Shaggy argued.
"I'll get off my back when-" Courage began.
Scooby had been cringing since the argument began, laying prone on the floor with his paws covering his ears, he couldn't take anymore and shouted, "RENOUGH! Rhis is no time to argue! Re need to save Ruriel!" he interfered, even though he had some of blame for not helping Eustace yesterday, he knew this wasn't a time to argue.
Shaggy and Courage looked at each other, then back to Scooby with a defeated look, silently nodding their heads in response. The two did not say a word in to assert otherwise because immediately they knew he was right. They had been letting their anger get the best of them. They could all only feel very guilty and ashamed.
Have I damaged our friendship? Courage thought, with worry and sadness
"Like, you're right Scoob, we meet to help Aunt Muriel," Shaggy replied, calming a bit down.
"Yeah, we need to find Shirley!" Courage added, he can worry about his friendship with the hungry duo later.
The two friends nodded, and the trio went out of the house to find Shirley, to undo the curse.
As the cowardly trio began making their way to find Shirley, the three were quiet, especially Courage. Courage's ears dropped as scenarios played constantly around his head, so many questions ran through his head, and the answers were those worst-case scenarios with him being hurt or unloved by his friends: Would they accept him after he disagree about not helping with Eustace?
He clenched his eyes shut, as his heart wrenched from the outcomes of losing his friends. He desperately wanted to talk to them again and asked if they're still friends, but he didn't want to as well.
"Rourage?"
Courage gasped, panting heavily as he was snapped out of his thoughts. He looked at Scooby, who began to look concerned for her when he saw him looking worried and anxious.
"...Rhat's wrong?"
"I'm scared of losing my friends! After our disagreement yesterday, I was worried weren't friends anymore! And you didn't try and help me with the farmer yesterday when he attack me!" Courage screamed as he covered his head and expected the worst.
"Little pink dude, of course we're still friends," Shaggy comforted.
"Reah, we don't care if you didn't agree with us," Scooby added, with a hint of anger.
"Yeah, but what about you guys? You never fight or disagree," Courage asked, still not having bravery to face his friends.
Courage then heard Shaggy and Scooby laughing, Courage looked back at his friends, with confusion.
"What?" Courage asked, not getting what they find so funny.
Shaggy and Scooby both managed to calm down.
"Little pink dude, just because me and Scooby are the bestest of buddies, doesn't mean we don't get agree from time to time," Shaggy explained.
"Reah, there was a time when me and Raggy preform at a circus, and even though I did most of the tricks, Raggy took the credit for it," Scooby said.
"What? You did?" Courage asked, the cowardly teen sadly nodding his head in response. "But why would you do that?"
"Well, like, I let the fame get to my head, and Scooby almost didn't forgive me, but we managed to work things out and apologized at the end," Shaggy said.
"Rhe point is Rourage, even though we may disagree sometimes, not one disagreement can hurt our friendship," Scooby smiled.
"Really?" Courage asked.
"Like totally little pink dude, nothing you do could change our friendship," Shaggy said.
Courage grinned, touched to hear his friends would still be together.
"Rourage…" the cowardly Great Dane started his apology as he placed a paw on Courage's back. "…Re didn't mean to ignore your warning about Rustace, and if it helps, we will help you," he assured no harm with an assuring smile.
"Like, me too, and I'm sorry too," Shaggy apologized.
Courage grinned, feeling heartfelt, "Thanks pals."
It took four hours, but they manage to find Shirley, cooking up a fire.
"Like, finally," Shaggy exclaimed, exhausted.
"Rhat took forever," Scooby complained falling to the floor from exhaustion.
"Help, help, help," Courage repeated to Shirley bouncing up and down.
"The stupid one. He's stupid right?" she asked.
"Like, that's an understatement," Shaggy responded, agreeing.
"Uh-huh," Courage added, also agreeing.
"Risten Rhirley, we need you to take the curse away from him," Scooby told her.
"There is nothing I can do." Shirley told the cowardly trio while shaking her head, "The farmer has to remove the curse by finding generosity within his heart. And he can only do that by seeing himself the way he really is."
"Like, you gotta be kidding me," Shaggy said, rather baffled of what she just said.
Scooby and Courage groaned, knowing this gonna be impossible.
"But I feel sorry for you three, for a few pieces of silver, I can sell you this mirror. All you have to do is hold it up to the stupid one," Shirley told Shaggy, Scooby and Courage while pulling out a large mirror.
"That's it?" Courage asked surprised, expecting the item to be magical or something like that.
"Not everything has to be elaborate," Shirley countered, annoyed.
"Here," Shaggy interjected while pulling out a bag full of silver.
"Thanks for your business," Shirley said, smiling.
Shaggy, Scooby and Courage then raced back to the farm.
The trip back to the house took an hour, but the trio manage to find their way back.
"Like, at least the trip back was quicker," Shaggy panted in between breaths. Like, next time, take the truck.
"EUSTACE! WHERE ARE YOUR MARBLES?!" Muriel shouted.
"On the roof, hurry!" Courage instructed, pointing to the roof.
Looking to the side, Shaggy, Scooby and Courage saw a ladder they could use to climb to the roof, heading over, the trio quickly made their way to the roof and saw Eustace sitting on Muriel.
"Boys! Help-" Muriel called out, but was silence by Eustace by the mushroom.
"NO SOLICITORS!" Eustace cried out, delirious from the rain.
Shaggy, Scooby and Courage then moved closer to them with the mirror out, but due to the roof being slippery, they've broke the mirror as soon as they neared them. The trio immediately widened their eyes and went pale.
"Roh no!" Scooby cried out.
"Huh? What's that? Who's that?" Eustace asked confused, "Uh, who are you boy?"
"Huh?" Courage asked confused. What does the farmer mean by that?
"Where's your hat?" Eustace asked, sounding sad and distraught.
"Like, who is he talking to?" Shaggy asked, not getting what's happening.
"RI don't know Raggy," Scooby answered, also dumbstruck of what's going on.
"No hat, now that's not right, a little boy should have a hat," Eustace said upset, he then took his hat of and gave it to Courage.
"Thank you," Courage muttered slightly uncomfortable, as he was surprised and never thought he would say that to Eustace.
Shaggy and Scooby's jaws, dropped. Never once had the hungry duo thought they seen that greedy, angry old farmer give his hat to Courage with generosity. It left them both flabbergasted and questioning of they're really awake. This couldn't be real could it?
"Dude, like, that was... the most generous thing Uncle Eustace did in his entire life..." Shaggy said, in astonishment.
"Ruh... maybe he's not as big of a jerk as we thought he was..." Scooby replied, also surprised, that Eustace was willing to share the hat to Courage.
"Oh, my, Courage, you did the impossible. You got Eustace to give of himself," Muriel said surprised.
Shaggy and Scooby manage to get Eustace's glasses, that was on the other side of the rooftop. Eustace was sneezing now due to all the rain, Shaggy managed to put the glasses on his uncle.
"Hey, my glasses, I can see!" Eustace said before suddenly sneezing.
"Well, let's get him inside and all patched up then," Muriel said as Shaggy helped her up.
The three nodded before helping Muriel and a now sick Eustace back into the house.
"ACHOO!" Eustace sneezed again.
The family were in the master bedroom, Eustace was in the bed sick with an ice bag on his head. Muriel put in a thermometer into Eustace's mouth which caused him to growl.
"You know something, Scoob," Shaggy said turning to his best friend. "I think Courage was right from before, like, Uncle Eustace is DEFINITELY a part of this family too."
"RI agree!" Scooby replied, nodding his head, "RI guess we kinda were a bit quick to judge him, looks like things are gonna be pretty different around here in the farmhouse from now on."
"You know Eustace, you should thank Courage, Shaggy and Scooby for getting rid of that curse," Muriel told Eustace.
"You feeling alright there, farmer?" Courage asked, hoping his cold was not gonna get any worse.
"What are you doing with my hat dog?" Eustace demanded, "As if the stupid Shaggy-haired fella and that other stupid dog getting their dirty paws on me glasses wasn't bad enough already!" he then roughly grabbed the hat and put it back on his head.
But as soon as he did that, the cloud reappeared and began to pour.
"Rand... I spoke too soon," Scooby uttered dryly. Ruess nothing change's his attitude.
"Man, does nothing ever pleases that old man," Shaggy sighed, rolling his eyes.
"There ain't no such thing as a curse," Eustace bitterly said.
And as soon as he said that, the cloud struck his head with lightning, leaving behind nothing but his charred head.
"Rell, looks like we're gonna have to find another way to get rid of that curse..." Scooby retorted, dryly.
"We could that... or we could just go downstairs and watch some TV, if you ask me, I do not have the energy to fix this right now," Courage said, as he heading downstairs.
"Reah, let's go," Scooby nodded, leaving the bedroom.
"Agree, like, I wander what's on TV?" Shaggy shrugging, before following his friends.
