Chapter One: Death Bed

Bella held Charlie's hand and tears streamed down her cheeks. She never thought this day would come. Her mother had already passed and so had Sue. Now, it was the end of her father. Charlie was going to die. She wasn't sure when, but he was going to die. He looked so old and broken. His black short hair was now long and gray. Charlie looked like Santa Clause, except much thinner and very sad. He was in and out, extremely delirious. He knew something wasn't right when he saw his daughter though.

"Bella?" Charlie asked, unsure.

His eyes were barely open. Charlie wondered who he looked at through his blurred vision. He had a feeling that it was Bella, but there was no way. She looked exactly the same that he saw her fifty years ago. His daughter looked like she hadn't aged a day. After Edward and Bella got married, he saw Bella for years. Then, Edward and Bella decided to move with Renesmee and Jacob. All the Cullens had left Forks so he hadn't seen his daughter in years.

Why did she look the same? Charlie wondered. Did she look the same? Who was he looking at? Charlie was so confused. He tried to open his eyes more and saw Renesmee. She also looked the same. What on earth was going on? He knew he was slipping, but was it that bad? Charlie grew frightened. He had no idea what was going on. Jacob looked different. He looked older. Edward also looked the same. Charlie was incredibly confused. Bella sniffled and wiped her tears.

"Dad, I don't want you to go…" She whispered.

"Bella, is that really you?" Charlie croaked.

Edward stayed at the door, watching. Renesmee and Jacob were in the back of the room, standing with Bella. Jacob watched her carefully and wished he could help. Renesmee walked over to Bella and put her hand on her mother's right shoulder to comfort her. Bella knew this day was going to come. She just wished she had more time with her father.

"It's really me Dad, I promise." Bella said.

Charlie squinted his eyes. "You look the same. What are you?"

"Bella, maybe we should go…" Edward whispered.

Bella shook her head. "No! He's my Dad."

"Mom, maybe Dad is right." Renesmee told her.

Bella sobbed. "No, I'm staying with him until he…until he…" She couldn't finish her sentence.

"Bella…You…" Charlie coughed. "Am I seeing things?"

"No Dad, it's really me. I'm really here." Bella said. "I'm so sorry I didn't come sooner."

"You haven't aged a day…" Charlie coughed again. "What happened to you?"

"Let's not talk about that," Bella said. "We just need to spend time together."

"I'm sorry I'm…" Charlie coughed. "I'm not feeling well."

"I know Dad," Bella sobbed. "I'm so sorry." She turned to Edward. "I want to change him."

Jacob stepped forward, breaking his silence. "Bella, no."

"I don't know if I can do this again you guys." Bella said and sniffled.

She held onto Charlie's hand. He was still in and out, his heart dropped. He couldn't leave now. Bella would have no family left. She had the Cullens and she was one of them, but her immediate family would be gone. Charlie shook his head and said,

"I'll stay for as long as I can." Charlie croaked. "But Bella…You have to let me go."

"Dad, no…" Bella continued to cry. "I can't do that. Not again."

"Bella, it's time…" Charlie argued. "I'm ready. I'm going to say my goodbyes. You should too."

"Oh Dad," Bella said and put his hand next to her cheek.

"You're so cold…" Charlie shuddered.

Bella dropped his hand. "I'm sorry Dad."

The heart monitor began to make noise. Bella's eyes widened because the sounds told her something bad was going to happen. Charlie was dying. He was going. Nurses rushed into the room, as did a doctor. They pumped his heart and tried to get him back. The last words that he spoke to her…Bella was cold. Her heart turned to mush and broke into tiny pieces. The doctor stopped and told the nurses to stop. Charlie Swan was gone. Bella sobbed uncontrollably and held onto her father's body. Jacob rushed over to her and tried to pull her away. Edward rushed to her side as well, but Bella held on tightly.

"Get out of here!" Bella roared.

The doctor called the time of death and the nurses shut off the machines. Everyone quickly left and left Bella alone. She held onto her father and sobbed. Charlie meant so much to her. She tried to stay in his life, but the frozen in time thing had stopped her from making appearances. She wished she had more time with him. Something had touched her shoulder and she jumped. Bella whirled around and there was no one there. She felt as though Charlie's spirit was still with her.

"Dad?" Bella cried out.

"Bella…"

She heard a whisper. Bella stood up and wiped the tears from her eyes. Was her father going to stay with her? She wondered. She hoped so. She wanted more time with him. She needed more time with him. Then Bella felt nothing. There was no one there. She felt empty inside and thirsty…She felt this hunger rise in her that she had never felt before. Bella ran to her husband and her family. Edward looked at her, concerned.

"What's wrong?" Edward asked.

"I'm thirsty." Bella told him. "Let's go hunting." She turned to Jacob. "Take Renesmee please."

Jacob nodded and Renesmee left with him. Edward took Bella to the woods and they hunted after every animal they could find. Once Bella was finished, she went to Edward and frowned. Edward noticed her frown and asked,

"Is something wrong?"

"I'm still thirsty." Bella said. "I don't know what's wrong. I've never felt this way before."

"Maybe you need a bear." Edward said. "Let's find one."

Bella shook her head. "I need something stronger."

"Bella, no!" Edward reached for her, but she left.

Bella went into town and away from family. She loved her husband, but she needed something more. She knew it in her bones. Something was telling her that she needed to try human blood. Bella stayed in the dark alleys and waited for someone. She found a homeless man all by himself. He looked like he lived long enough. Bella grabbed him and pinned him to the wall. The man cried out in fear,

"No! Please!"

"I'm sorry, but I can't stop…" Bella said and opened her mouth.

"Bella! Stop!" A voice called out to her.

Bella was startled and dropped the man. She whirled around and there was no one behind her. Who the hell was that? She wondered. How did they know her name? Bella was deeply confused. She looked at the man and saw how frightened he was. Her hunger dissipated. Bella shook her head and left. She was on the hunt again. Bella needed to feed.
