So this is sort of inspired after I re-watched "The Rite of Passage" recently, while studying for summer finals (I'm in graduate school). It's also inspired by the way that we all sort of fit Cassie Frasier into these SG-1 fics, as she was the first kid that SG-1 all really interacted with (barring Ry'ac, but I feel like the episode that Cassie was introduced in gave us a whole new perspective on SG-1 in general, but especially Sam and Jack).

This is a tribute to SG-1's places in Cassandra Frasier's life—with a Sam/Jack slant, of course, because I'm incapable of writing something that isn't shippy. I'm going to preface this by saying that seasons 9 and 10 aren't my favorite… so I'll maybe allude to them, but won't mention anything specific. I like the idea of Sam being able to have command of Atlantis, but then I felt that her having command of the George Hammond (which was introduced in Stargate Universe) was just another way to keep her and Jack apart. So I might fudge that a little bit to suit the timeline that's in my head. I'm firmly in the camp that believes Sam and Jack got together (in canon) after the events of "Threads," which was as much stated by one of the writers. So… I'm definitely going to mess with some of the established timeline, but since Stargate Universe wasn't really about our favorites from SG-1, I think you'll all forgive me. And sorry, I also firmly believe that Sam and Jack got married, had babies, and had their happy ending. I'm not saying you need those things to have a happy ending, but that is what I always pictured for them.

I'll be going by the time that the episodes aired for ages. Based on "Rite of Passage," Cassie was probably turning 15 (The episode synopsis says 16, but there are only 14 candles on the cake, and they definitely could have fit 16 if that's what she was turning So I'm just going with 15, because I've clearly thought too much about this). By season 7, she would have been graduating from high school—she might have been 17, but I was also 17 when I graduated, so it is what it is.

Disclaimer: I don't own anything. The story title comes from the song "Last Hope" by Paramore.

November, 1997

Cassandra Frasier sat quietly, the book she had been reading abandoned in her lap as she watched Sam and Jack attempt to train her new puppy. Cassie had dubbed the little dog Doc, which had made Jack burst into laughter and hug her tightly. He had ruffled her hair and told her that that was the best name for a dog he had ever heard, which made Cassie smile shyly in return.

Sam and Jack were both taking turns trying to teach Doc how to sit, but it seemed like it had turned into more of a game. They were both trying to see how many times they could get the puppy to sit, but the puppy was young and certainly wasn't going to learn in one day. It was fun to watch, though, and it had been even more fun when Teal'c had gone over and quietly commanded the puppy to "sit." Doc had done so immediately, looking up at the Jaffa with wide puppy eyes while Jack had loudly complained that it wasn't fair that Teal'c had a voice that everyone automatically listened to.

Daniel, of all people was manning the grill, carefully keeping an eye on the burgers and hot dogs he had been put in charge of. Teal'c was standing beside him with his hands clasped behind his back, listening intently as Daniel explained the way he had meticulously arranged the burgers and hot dogs. Daniel was gesturing with the tongs, and nearly side-swiped Janet with them as she bustled by, carrying a large bowl of salad. Teal'c deftly intervened, catching the salad bowl in one hand and Janet with the elbow by the other, steadying her

"Thanks, Teal'c," Janet said as she shot Daniel a pointed look. He shrugged sheepishly and turned his full attention back towards the grill, where he began to pull the main course of their dinner off of the racks. He set them on the platter Janet passed over to him, and Teal'c organized buns and toppings.

"Dinner is ready!" Janet called into the backyard. Even though Doc was just a puppy, he still knew exactly where he might be able to find some extra food. He bounded up the steps to the back deck and sat at the end of the table, tale wagging in expectation. Cassie followed right behind her new puppy, stopping to laugh and ruffle his ears. She snuck Doc a chip and smiled innocently when Daniel clearly caught her. He grinned at Cassie and held a finger to his lips, silently promising not to reveal anything.

Sam and Jack weren't far behind Cassie, and they were debating the pros and cons of a puppy training school. Jack insisted that, having grown up with dogs, he had never needed to send any of them to be trained. Sam argued that, given the long hours Janet sometimes had to keep when there was a medical emergency on base, not to mention the fact that she was still adjusting to having Cassie in her life, there wasn't exactly a ton of time to train the puppy on her own.

"Regardless, since you brought the puppy to us, you're going to help us take care of it, Colonel," Janet stated in her best no-nonsense doctor voice.

"I can help, too!" Cassie piped up. She loved her new puppy, and she already loved Jack, too. She definitely wanted to help, especially since she was eager to learn more about Earth and all of its traditions.

Janet smiled indulgently at her daughter while Jack mumbled, "What, it wasn't like I wasn't going to offer to help anyway."

Sam, who was sitting next to him at the table, patted his arm sympathetically, but couldn't keep the smile off of her lips. When she caught Cassie's eye, Sam winked, making her giggle. Daniel was already discussing the finer points of another Earth tradition—something called an amusement park and Jack eagerly chimed in stating that every Earth kid needed to ride a roller coaster at least once. Teal'c just arched one eyebrow and ate half of the first of three hotdogs on his plate. Doc was nudging at Daniel's elbow, begging for food, having already decided that he was going to be the person most likely to feed him treats from the table.

Doc turned out to be right—Daniel slipped him a chip and was immediately caught by everyone else. Janet exclaimed that Daniel was already teaching the puppy bad habits by feeding him directly from the table. Jack didn't help matters by doing it again, but he didn't get caught and yelled at, not even when Daniel pointed out that Jack had done the same thing. Sam advised Janet to give it up now, since the men of SG-1 were likely to spoil the puppy as much as they were going to spoil Cassie. Jack snorted at that, muttering how Sam was already wrapped around Cassie's little finger as much as the rest of them were. He nudged her shoulder playfully as he spoke, and Sam blushed a little, trying (and failing) to hide her smile.

Cassie smiled broadly and dug into her hotdog (still her favorite of all the Earth foods she had tried so far). Things had been a little scary for a while there, and she was still sad about the loss of her family, the rest of her people, and her home. But she had to admit: she loved her new family.

I was going to write all of the parts and just post in one, big, long one-shot, but then… I changed my mind. I already have the next chapter written and am working on the next two, so hopefully I can stay ahead of this. I know I need to be working on the next chapter of my AU, but I'm just going to take the writing muse as it comes haha!

Thanks for reading, and please let me know what you think!
