Saeko always attempted to make her daughter Ami's birthdays special. Her schedule been cleared for an entire whole day every year on the day of Ami's birthdays. She came to make a big dinner of all of Ami's favorite foods and a big chocolate cake with blue and white icing on it for her to blow out the candles for the number of how older she had gotten. Saeko did wish she could give Ami a proper birthday party but every kid she asked to come to at school said they were too busy to go to birthday parties or told her that no one would ever want to go to a know-it-all and a rude and stuck-up snob's birthday party because of how much their teachers sung her praises. This ended up leaving Ami in tears and Saeko had to comfort her daughter cursing those mean and nasty kids for making Ami cry. Ami found herself saying that she did not need other kids at her birthday parties, so it was just Saeko her mother who attended them.

Saeko attempted to make it up with the birthday gifts she gave to Ami. Birthday gifts to Ami could include new boxes of crayons, coloring books, and drawing paper for Ami to use to color and draw if she needed new art supplies to do so, new clothes if she outgrew the old ones she had, or new different books she had expressed a desire to read to her mother. However, she came to make sure she had one special birthday gift to her. The gift she did give Ami for her tenth birthday had been something she knew that she would love such as the present she had given to Ami on her tenth birthday.

Ami did love blue butterflies. She been so happy for the blue butterfly fleece blanket she had gotten from Saeko for her ninth birthday, but Saeko got her something even more special than a fleece blanket. She came to hope that Ami would love it. This did happen to be her way to make up for the lack of guests that never wanted to go to her daughter's birthday parties.

"Here, Ami," Saeko said handing her daughter a gift-wrapped box with something special in it. Open it. This is your special birthday gift from me to you."

"What is it, Mom?" Ami asked.

"That would spoil the surprise!" Saeko answered laughing.

Ami eagerly tore off the gift-wrapping paper. Her fingers been unable to open the box fast enough. She came to open the gift box to find a blue butterfly necklace attached to a silver chain inside of it. The necklace did remind her of her love for blue butterflies and this gift made her smile. "Thank you, Mom!" she burst out happily taking it out of the box as she examined it in her hands.

"Do you like it?" Saeko asked with a hint of worry in her voice.

"I love it!" Ami answered as she undid the clasps of it and put it around her neck. "What do you think?"

"It suits you," Saeko commented.

"I will cherish it, Mom!" Ami declared. "I promise."

The happiness in her daughter's tone made Saeko smile for she had made her happy on her birthday as every child should have so she knew she had not failed in her attempts to do so and that she had succeeded in Ami's birthday gifts this year.
