Author notes:
This is the first story co-written by RhiD29 and LexieD29 (Lexie is only on A03). We are twin sisters and have been writing for about 18 years. Two years ago, we got back into the Naruto fandom, and started posting fanfictions (funnily enough, our first fanfics at age 9 were Naruto manga drawn in notebooks). We've always bounced ideas with each other and were each other's first reader, but we never wrote anything together until now.
This idea came to RhiD29 at 2 am one morning who the next day told LexieD29 about it and we decided this would be the story we finally co-write. This is part of RhiD29's latest series (A time-travel series).
This story is part of a series. We recommend reading Mission: Preventing the Massacre and Mission: Stopping Orochimaru before. We also highly recommend reading Mission: Chunin Exam, for the Babysitter part to make sense. Otherwise, you will have major spoilers, and you might be confused about what's going on momentarily because both stories happen at the same time.
In case you don't want to read them (SPOILERS AHEAD), here's what you need to know: the Uchiha clan is alive (except Madara), Anko was a student of Orochimaru like in canon, but just before she left, Orochimaru did an experiment in which he artificially implanted his semen into Anko to create a baby. Three years later (just after the massacre was prevented), Anko and a group of Anbu killed Orochimaru, and Anko returned to Konoha with her son, Tadashi. As for the story named Mission: Chunin Exam, too many things happen for us to sum it up, just go read it.
Anko had a big problem to solve and she was the only one to blame. She had been so busy with meetings regarding the chunin exam, the security around the event and preparing the forest of death that she forgot to prepare for the most important person: her son Tadashi. The written exam started in three hours, and she had yet to book a babysitter for her seven-year-old child. It gave her less than four hours to find someone she trusted with the task of watching him the next three days, someone responsible enough for cooking, giving him his bath, and putting him to bed, and not just playing with him.
If for the duration of her meetings, she usually asks the mission desk to assign the babysitting to a newly genin team for an easy D ranked mission, it was not a possibility now. Not with so short notice and with this many responsibilities.
She tried calling the woman that usually took care of Tadashi when she was away on mission, but with the tone of her voice when she answered, one thing was clear: she was sick, and would not take care of an energetic boy.
Tadashi was currently at the park playing with a few children his age, under the watch of the Hyuuga clan head's wife, who was there with her youngest daughter. Thinking of Hanabi made Anko think of the heiress, Hinata, and her mind went to her sensei, which Anko was quite friends with. Maybe Kurenai would do it as a favor?
No, Kurenai will not. Her team is passing the exam in three hours. Meaning Kurenai will not be available at all to watch her friend's son.
Anko's phone rang, and she answered with a dry tone. She was pissed at herself, so she was pissed at everyone. It was Hayate. What did he want, again?
"We're holding a last-minute meeting before starting the exam, would you mind coming over?"
"I just realized I have no one to look after Tadashi while I proctor the second part. Can you do it for me for the first two days before it's your turn? It would give me a little time to find someone else?"
"No. I'm supposed to back you up if something happens, I have to remain close to the forest. Besides, I don't want to babysit Tadashi."
"Urgh. Alright then, but I can't make it to your stupid meeting before I find someone."
Anko decided to leave her house and to walk in the streets. Being outside helped her think, and maybe she would meet with someone who would be available? She walked towards where Genma usually hung out, but he was nowhere to be seen. She then went directly to the entrance of Konoha, with hopes to find Kotetsu and Izumo in case they were off duty soon, but no luck, they just had their day off, the both of them. Anko wasn't so sure of that, they weren't guarding the entrance the other day, but maybe they just didn't want to hurt her feelings. Desperate, she went in the direction of the academy, maybe she'd find a parent there willing to take Tadashi home, and that's when a conversation between two Uchiha boys grabbed her attention, even though it had nothing to do with Tadashi.
"Good luck in your exam later," the tallest said to the other. "I'm sure your team will do well. When Shisui and I became chunin, the first part was a written test with some strategy behind it, then it was some sort of battle royale test lasting a few days, and then you had a month off to prepare for the final round, which is a tournament."
Anko stopped, surprised the oldest was telling all of it. It was pretty much what it would look like. She looked at them for a few seconds. If she recalled, the youngest was trying the exam for the first time, he had graduated from the academy this year. Uchiha Sasuke, one of Kakashi's brats. The other boy must be Itachi, his brother and the future clan head. The oldest had mentioned Shisui. It was a name Anko knew. He was a year younger than her, so they had been at the academy at the same time, though not in the same class.
Sasuke replied back, "Thanks for the heads up. I'm sure you'll have fun training with Shisui while I try my best to get promoted. We're the week he has three days off back to back, right?"
"Yeah. I'll be on a mission starting tomorrow, but tonight, after his shift ends, should be fun. We planned to go grab some drinks at the bar after training, not that you would come with us if you could. Now, you should go, don't you have a meeting with Kakashi sensei?"
Sasuke ran away, and Anko grabbed Itachi by the arm.
"Shisui has a few days off?"
"Uh, yeah, I just said that, but why do you care?"
"I need to talk with him."
Anko hadn't talked to him since her academy days, which were a long time ago, before Orochimaru took her with him. But she had exhausted the list of people she trusted with Tadashi. From what she heard, Shisui was a great guy. A police officer who was nice to everyone. He wouldn't hurt her son, surely?
Anko ran towards the police station. His shift probably wasn't over yet, and she hoped to catch him. She noticed him a few streets away from the station, he was probably slowly making his way back there while still patrolling around. With guests coming from both Suna and Yama, many ninjas were on the watch. Anko was actually surprised he had been able to have three consecutive days.
"Hey, Shisui, can you wait a minute?" she called him.
He stopped, and turned around, and it was clear he wasn't sure who had called him, by how he looked around with a confused face. Anko ran to him directly. "I just heard you had a few days off in a few hours, is that true?"
The guy was taken by surprise. "You're not going to complain and make me work, are you?"
"Well, I'm in a bit of trouble, and I'd really need your help. No one is available."
Anko explained the situation she was in. Shisui looked at her with a laugh. He's going to say no, he's going to say no, was all that Anko could think as Shisui reacted to what she was saying. She wanted to punch his stupid grin out of his face.
She ended up almost on her knees, begging him to say yes. She swore she'd give him a very big pay. She was in so much trouble that she even considered giving him a quarter of what she'd receive for her work on the chunin exam – which was enough to feed her and Tadashi for weeks.
"Look, it's not that I don't like kids, but I never took care of one. I never met Tadashi before, though Itachi told me he was cute, that afternoon he took care of him when he was like three, when you brought him here. I don't think I'm the person for this job."
Anko didn't recall asking Itachi to babysit Tadashi, but it was four years ago. Besides, it didn't matter.
"Shisui, I have no one. All his babysitters are either sick, working, or can't take him for reasons they didn't say. Here are the keys to my house and my address," she said, giving him the keys and writing down where she lived on a piece of paper. "I really have to go attend a meeting, Tadashi should be at the park near the academy, just pick him up when your shift ends."
She ran away to join Hayate in that stupid meeting. Her heart was still pounding from the stress. She just hoped that Shisui still had his big heart and would not just throw the keys away and leave Tadashi to fend for himself. No, he wasn't a bad guy, he would never, right? It was too late to doubt, she had that chunin exam to get rid of.
