Note: This chapter contains references to the events of 9/11.

As they arrived at Ground Zero, the group stood in awe of the immense space before them. The solemn atmosphere weighed heavily upon them as they took in the vastness of the site.

"Wow, it's huge," Slim remarked, his voice hushed in reverence.

Angela nodded, her eyes scanning the area with a mixture of sadness and respect. "It's hard to imagine what it was like here before."

Mike placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, offering silent support as they took a moment to absorb the significance of the place.

Gypsy glanced around, her expression reflecting the solemnity of the moment. "It feels… sacred," she whispered softly.

Manny nodded in agreement, his gaze fixed on the empty space before them. "A place of memory and reflection," he murmured.

Mike's jaw tightened as he surveyed the area, his thoughts turning to the events that had unfolded there years before. "Yeah," he said quietly, his voice tinged with sadness. "It's Ground Zero."

"Angela…" Rosie's voice was hesitant, her tone reflecting a mix of curiosity and apprehension. "You said something happened here before… What…?"

Angela's expression softened, a somber shadow crossing her features as she recalled the memories of that fateful day. "9/11…" she replied quietly, her voice carrying the weight of sorrow and remembrance.

The circus bugs exchanged bewildered glances, uncertainty flickering in their eyes as they tried to grasp the significance of Angela's words.

"9/11?" Heimlich's voice wavered with concern, his antennae twitching with unease.

Angela nodded slowly, her gaze drifting to the ground as she struggled to find the right words to convey the magnitude of the event.

"It was a tragic day," David interjected, his voice steady yet tinged with emotion as he stepped forward to join the conversation. "A series of coordinated terrorist attacks that shook the world and changed the course of history."

Silence descended upon the group as they absorbed the weight of the history that surrounded them, the echoes of the past lingering in the air like an unspoken tribute to the lives lost on that unforgettable day.

"This event first happened," Mike began, his voice solemn as he recounted the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. "The morning of September 11th, 2001, started off like any other Tuesday; people went to work, kids went to school, and life carried on as usual."

"But at 8:46 AM, everything changed," Angela interjected, her tone heavy with sorrow as she continued the narrative.

"At that moment, an airplane full of passengers flew into one of the Twin Towers," David added solemnly.

"And those were the two tallest structures of the World Trade Center here in New York City," Lily explained, her voice tinged with sadness.

"The World Trade Center?" Manny asked, his curiosity piqued by the unfamiliar term.

"At the time, the World Trade Center was a symbol of New York City's economic power," Angela elaborated, her gaze fixed on the solemn memorial before them. "They were iconic skyscrapers, towering over the city skyline."

"Many people worked there, and it was a bustling hub of activity," Mike added, his voice reflective. "But that day, it became the target of a terrorist attack."

"When the plane collided with the tower, all the people on that plane were killed, and tragically, many people in the building lost their lives as well," Lily explained, her voice heavy with sorrow.

Gypsy's eyes widened in shock and sadness. "Oh, my god..." she murmured softly, her heart heavy with the gravity of the tragedy.

"That's really sad..." Rosie said softly, her voice tinged with sympathy.

"I know," David replied in a hushed tone. "Then, about 20 minutes later, a second plane flew into the other tower. It was then that people started to realize that this was not an accident; it was an attack."

"It was evident the planes had been hijacked or forcibly taken over," Mike clarified. "Shortly after, another plane crashed, this time at the Pentagon, just outside Washington, D.C. The Pentagon serves as the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense."

"Washington is also on our travel list," Angela added, her tone sober as she glanced at the group.

Slim's voice softened with sadness as he asked, "And... what happened after?"

Lily's reply was equally somber. "The unthinkable. The South Tower of the World Trade Center... collapsed."

A collective gasp escaped the circus bugs, their expressions reflecting the weight of the tragedy.

David's voice carried the weight of the tragedy as he continued, "It was a devastating blow. Debris flew everywhere, and all of downtown Manhattan was enveloped in a thick cloud of dust and smoke."

The circus bugs listened intently, absorbing the gravity of the situation.

"Fortunately, most people were able to evacuate the tower before it collapsed," Mike said, his tone heavy with sorrow. "But tragically, many others, including brave firefighters and police officers who rushed in to assist, became trapped... and lost their lives."

Gypsy's eyes welled up with tears as she absorbed the heartbreaking reality of the tragedy.

"But why did the buildings fall down?" Dim asked. Aren't they made to be really strong?"

"Actually, the buildings were built to withstand impacts from smaller crashes, but nothing of this magnitude," Angela clarified. "The fuel from the airplanes ignited enormous fires that destroyed the towers' internal structure."

"What happened to the other tower?" Gypsy asked with a sniffle, her voice quivering with emotion.

"At 10:28," Mike said somberly, "the north tower, too, collapsed."

"Hundreds of people's lives were cut short in an instant," his brother added, his tone reflecting the gravity of the situation.

"Around the time of the South Tower's collapse," Lily added, "another plane crashed in an empty field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania."

"Another plane?" Manny gasped, eyes widening in shock.

"This 4th hijacked plane was most likely intended to hit another building," Angela explained. "But evidence suggested that passengers fought back against the hijackers and took over, causing it to crash. There were no survivors."

"Did many people die?" Francis asked, his voice laden with sorrow.

"Yeah," Mike confirmed. "In total, around 3,000 civilians lost their lives that day."

"3,000...?" Rosie gasped, shock evident in her eyes.

"It was the deadliest attack since the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii back in 1941," Angela added quietly.

"Pearl Harbor?" Slim asked.

"Hawaii?" Dim added.

"Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike by the Japanese against the United States naval base in Hawaii," David explained. "It prompted the United States' entry into World War II."

"Hawaii is a state in the United States," Lily added. "It's known for its beautiful beaches and rich history."

"It's hard to imagine such tragedies happening," Gypsy murmured softly.

"We'll tell you more about Pearl Harbor later," Mike interjected.

"Right, so let's talk a little bit about why all this happened," Angela explained. "Hijacking a plane is a form of terrorism."

"Terrorism?" Manny asked.

"Yeah, terrorism is when people use violence or threats to intimidate or coerce others for political, religious, or ideological reasons," Lily clarified. "In this case, the terrorists who hijacked the planes did it to cause fear and chaos."

"They wanted to send a message," David added solemnly. "They targeted iconic symbols of America's economic and military power to show their opposition to certain U.S. policies and actions."

"It's a sad reality that some people resort to such extreme measures to make a point," Angela said with a heavy sigh.

"That… kind of sounds like the description of grasshoppers and the colony…" Gypsy observed.

"Yeah, in a way, it's similar," Mike replied. "Just like the grasshoppers using fear to control the ants, terrorists use fear to achieve their goals."

"It's like manipulating others through intimidation," Angela added, nodding in agreement. "But in this case, it's on a much larger and more tragic scale."

"It's awful to think about," Rosie said softly, her expression reflecting the weight of the comparison.

"The September 11th attacks were carried out by 19 members of a terrorist network called al Qaeda." David continued.

"Al Qaeda?" Dim asked, puzzled

"Al Qaeda is an extremist group that believes in using violence to achieve their goals," Lily explained. "They were responsible for planning and executing the attacks on September 11th."

"They're a group that wants to impose their beliefs and ideologies on others through force," Mike added.

"It's like they're trying to bully everyone into doing what they want," Rosie remarked with a frown.

"Exactly," Angela agreed. "Their actions on that day caused immense suffering and loss for so many people."

"Al Qaeda's ultimate goal was to purge the Muslim world of Western influence, particularly anything originating from the United States," Lily elaborated. "They perceived Western values and ideologies as a threat to their own beliefs and sought to eradicate them through violent means."

"9/11 was intended to instill fear in the United States and coerce the country into withdrawing support for specific governments in the Middle East," David explained. "The attacks were a deliberate attempt to disrupt political stability and influence U.S. foreign policy in the region."

"Al Qaeda's strategy involved inciting revolutions in countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, and other nations in the Middle East, followed by the establishment of religious governments sympathetic to their cause," Mike elaborated. "This was part of their broader objective: to hijack Islam itself, twisting its principles to serve their extremist agenda."

"They want to portray themselves as acting in the name of their religion, which, frankly, is utterly absurd when you think about it, like, at all." Angela remarked, her tone tinged with disbelief. "Their actions completely contradict the principles of Islam."

"Islam is a vast and diverse faith, with nearly 2 billion followers worldwide. It's unfair and inaccurate to equate it with the actions of a criminal organization like al Qaeda," David explained, his voice steady with conviction.

"Exactly," Angela agreed, nodding in affirmation. "Al Qaeda's distorted interpretation of Islam doesn't reflect the beliefs or practices of the vast majority of Muslims."

Rosie's frustration was palpable as she responded "So why do they believe their interpretation of religion justifies attacking innocent nations to impose it on others?"

"Because they're extremists," Mike interjected with a sigh, his frustration evident. "Their interpretation of Islam is warped and twisted to fit their own agenda of power and control."

Angela nodded in agreement. "Exactly. They manipulate religious beliefs to justify their violent actions, all in the name of their own version of Islam."

"It's like they've hijacked the faith itself," Lily added, her voice tinged with disbelief. "They've distorted its teachings to serve their own purposes."

David chimed in, his tone grave. "And unfortunately, they've convinced some people to follow them, perpetuating this cycle of violence and hatred."

Rosie frowned, troubled by the complexity of the situation. "But how do they gain followers if their beliefs are so extreme and destructive?"

"It's a combination of factors," Angela explained. "Some people are drawn in by promises of power and belonging, while others are influenced by propaganda and manipulation."

"Plus, they prey on vulnerable individuals who may feel marginalized or oppressed," Mike added. "They offer them a sense of purpose and belonging, even though it's based on hatred and violence."

"It's a tragic cycle," Lily said with a heavy sigh. "And breaking it requires understanding, empathy, and a concerted effort to counter their ideology."

"Well, surely if there are 19 members of that ghastly group who believe they're "acting on behalf of the religion", there has to be a leader," Manny speculated.

Angela nodded in agreement. "Yes, there is. You bugs might not be familiar with this guy, but his name is Osama bin Laden."

"Osama bin Laden?" Francis inquired, his antennae twitching with curiosity.

"Yes," Lily confirmed. "Osama bin Laden was the mastermind behind the events of 9/11. He was the leader of the al Qaeda network."

Gypsy's face still bore tear stains from hearing about the New York attack, but she found the strength to ask, "Did he take part in the attacks?"

"Not personally," Mike replied, his voice tinged with a mixture of sadness and anger. "But as the leader of al Qaeda, bin Laden played a central role in planning and orchestrating the entire thing."

"Why?" Dim asked, his voice filled with genuine confusion.

"Bin Laden and al Qaeda had grievances against the United States," David explained. "They were angry about U.S. military presence in the Middle East, support for Israel, and other policies they saw as oppressive to Muslims."

"But instead of seeking peaceful solutions or dialogue, they chose violence," Lily added, her voice tinged with disappointment. "Their actions on 9/11 were a horrific response to their grievances."

"And the United States responded to 9/11 by invading Afghanistan, a country that was harboring al Qaeda members," Mike said.

"The war lasted 20 years, until 2021, when the U.S. withdrew its final troops," his fiancée added, her voice carrying a mix of solemnity and relief.

"Over the course of the war, much of al Qaeda's infrastructure was dismantled, and several key leaders were killed," Lily said.

"After nearly a decade in hiding, in 2011, Osama bin Laden was eventually found and killed by the U.S. government," David added. "But despite the weakening of al Qaeda, other terrorist organizations have emerged to fill the void."

"There are still terrorist groups operating?" Slim asked, disbelief evident in his tone.

"Unfortunately, yes, Slim," Mike replied.

"Are they as dangerous as al Qaeda?" Dim inquired with a furrowed brow.

"Some of them might be even more dangerous," Angela chimed in. "Terrorism is a complex issue with many different groups and ideologies involved."

"It's like cutting off one head of the hydra and having two grow back," David added somberly.

"But why do these groups keep popping up?" Rosie asked, her voice filled with concern.

"Sometimes it's because of political unrest or social grievances," Lily explained. "Other times, it's due to extremist ideologies gaining traction among certain groups of people."

"It's a constant battle," Mike sighed. "But we have to remain vigilant and work together to combat terrorism in all its forms."

"Back home, it's been hard to rebuild, both physically and emotionally," David said, his voice carrying the weight of the ongoing struggle. "The scars left by that day run deep, and while we've made progress, there are still wounds that haven't fully healed."

Gypsy began to let out soft sobs, overwhelmed by the immense sorrow for the victims lost in the 9/11 attacks, including in New York and aboard the planes. Manny and Angela each placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, offering solace in their shared grief. "Hey, it's okay, Gypsy," Angela said softly, her voice filled with empathy.

Gypsy's tears flowed freely as she struggled to contain her emotions. "It's just so sad," she whispered, her voice choked with sorrow.

Manny nodded in understanding, his own eyes reflecting the pain he felt for those who had suffered. "Yeah, it's a tragedy that's hard to comprehend," he agreed softly.

Angela squeezed Gypsy's shoulder gently, offering silent support. "We're here for you," she reassured her, her voice warm and comforting. "And together, we'll honor their memory."

"Moreover, communities rallied around the families and friends of the victims, offering support and assistance in any way they could," Mike replied, his voice filled with admiration for the resilience shown in the face of tragedy.

"Incredible acts of solidarity and compassion were witnessed not only on the day of the attacks but also in the weeks and months that followed," David added, his tone reflecting the collective spirit of unity that emerged in the aftermath.

"Indeed. Within a year, all physical damage to the Pentagon was repaired, a testament to the determination to rebuild and move forward," Lily chimed in, noticing Gypsy brushing her eyes with her arm and offering her a gentle smile of reassurance.

"It's been a much tougher rebuilding process here in New York," Angela acknowledged, her voice tinged with a mix of sadness and hope. "But things are looking up. Literally." She then gestured towards the towering structure before them, a symbol of resilience rising from the ashes of tragedy. "By 2012, the new World Trade Center became the tallest building in New York."

"Big building!" Emily echoed with wide-eyed wonder, marveling at the towering structure before her.

"That was a truly heartbreaking event," Heimlich murmured, his voice heavy with sorrow.

"It certainly was," Mike agreed, his sigh carrying the weight of the shared sadness.

Tuck and Roll sniffled, brushing their eyes with tiny hands. Mike looked on his shoulder and offered a gentle smile as he stroked two fingers over Tuck's head, while Angela mirrored the gesture with Roll.

"Even the pill bugs felt the weight of this tragedy," Angela observed softly.

"It's alright, boys," Mike chuckled lightly, his tone reassuring.

"Are these squares... where the towers were?" Dim asked, his voice tinged with curiosity and sadness.

"Yeah..." Lily replied, her voice somber. "These squares mark the footprints of the original Twin Towers."

"How did they manage to add water to this?" Rosie asked, her eyes scanning the reflective pools.

"They created these memorial pools as a tribute," Mike explained. "The water represents the continuous flow of life and the deep void left by the tragedy."

Angela nodded. "It's a place for reflection and remembrance. The names of all the victims are inscribed around the edges, honoring those who lost their lives."

Rosie looked closer at the names, her expression softening. "It's a beautiful way to remember them," she said quietly.

"Yeah," David agreed. "It's a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit."

All of them lowered their heads and closed their eyes in silence, paying their respects to the 9/11 victims. After about a minute, they raised their heads, and David spoke up. "Now... why don't we all get some dinner? It's been a heavy day here at Ground Zero."

The group nodded in agreement, feeling the weight of the day's emotions. As they walked away from the memorial, Mike glanced back one last time. "Let's never forget what happened here," he said softly, his voice filled with determination.

"Never," Angela echoed, linking her arm with his as they headed toward their cars.

As the group made their way to Katz's Delicatessen, they found themselves immersed in the bustling streets of New York City. The neon lights and lively atmosphere provided a stark contrast to the somber mood they had experienced at Ground Zero.

Parking their cars nearby, they walked together towards the iconic deli, anticipation mingling with the lingering emotions from their visit to the memorial site. The aroma of pastrami and pickles greeted them as they stepped inside, and the lively chatter of diners filled the air.

Finding a table large enough to accommodate their group, they settled in, eager to unwind and share a meal together. As they perused the menu, memories of the day's events lingered in the back of their minds, but they were determined to focus on the present moment and enjoy each other's company.

"I could go for a classic pastrami on rye," Mike said with a smile, glancing at the menu.

"Sounds delicious," Angela agreed, her appetite gradually returning as she soaked in the vibrant atmosphere of the bustling deli.

Gypsy nodded in agreement, her tears from earlier now replaced with a sense of camaraderie as she looked around at her friends.

"Let's make a toast," Rosie suggested, raising her glass of water. "To new beginnings and cherished memories."

The others raised their glasses, clinking them together in a gesture of solidarity and shared experiences.

"Here's to friendship," David added, his voice filled with warmth as he met the gazes of his companions.

With their glasses raised and their hearts full, they toasted to the bonds that had brought them together and the journey that still lay ahead. As they enjoyed their meal and each other's company, the weight of the day's events gradually began to lift, replaced by a sense of hope and optimism for the future.

Back at the Hilton Garden Inn, Mike scanned the keycard to open the door to Tuck and Roll's room, allowing the two pill bugs to roll inside and settle onto their bed. As they curled up for the night, Mike closed the door with a gentle click.

"Alright, well, me and Angela are gonna watch '50 Shades of Grey'..." Mike announced, prompting a knowing smirk from his fiancee.

"Sounds like a plan," Manny agreed, glancing at Gypsy with a playful grin. "We've got our own copy, right?"

Gypsy nodded with a chuckle. "Yeah, we should watch it too. It'll be fun."

David, always ready to lend a hand, chimed in, "I can show you how to work the DVD player if you need help."

David led Gypsy and Manny over to the TV stand where the DVD player was located. He gestured towards the player and said, "Alright, here's how you use the DVD player."

He demonstrated how to open the disc tray with a press of a button, revealing the slot where the DVD would go. "You just place the DVD here," he said, showing them how to carefully insert the 50 Shades of Grey disc.

"Then, you just press this button to close the tray," David explained, pushing the tray back in until it clicked shut.

"Now, let's get the movie started," he said, reaching for the DVD player remote. David turned his attention to the already on TV, where the screen displayed the default input.

"Okay, first thing you'll want to do is press this button here," David said, pointing to the remote. "That brings up the DVD menu. Sometimes there are trailers you can skip through by pressing this button," he continued, demonstrating. "Once you're at the main menu, just press play to start the movie."

Gypsy and Manny nodded, taking in the instructions. As David guided them through the process, they followed along, learning the ins and outs of the DVD player.

"Alright, now that's all set," David said with a smile as the main menu appeared on the screen. "Go ahead and press play whenever you're ready."

Gypsy reached for the remote and pressed play, and the movie began to play. "Thanks for showing us, David," Gypsy said gratefully.

"Yeah, we appreciate it," Manny added, nodding in agreement.

"Anytime," David replied with a nod before stepping out and closing the door behind him. As Rosie, Dim, and Emily entered their room and settled into bed, with Heimlich, Slim, and Francis doing the same, the two human couples each retired to their respective rooms, closing the doors behind them. Soon, the soft glow of the TV illuminated each room as they all settled in to watch their copies of 50 Shades of Grey.

After a long day of reflection and solemnity at Ground Zero, the quiet hum of the movie filled the air, providing a temporary escape from the weight of the day's events. As the credits rolled, each group found themselves lost in their own thoughts, contemplating the significance of the past and the hope for the future. Eventually, fatigue settled in, and one by one, they drifted off to sleep, ready to face whatever the next day would bring.
