No-One But You (The Zephyr Endeavor)
Chapter 17: Connection Error Song(Part 7)
Wade Wilson wasn't avoiding Ezekiel Stane, or reading some "boring" S.H.I.E.L.D. file at all. Victor definitely mischaracterized the information that he received from Ezekiel, but that's just swell and dandy.
The mercenary was given access to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s account of the Surveillant Council, remember? Ezekiel gave him access to the file, so he started reading all the reports and observations that were given to Nick Fury throughout the years.
Now, the Stalker Council looked over the Vishanti Trio first, but Wade wasn't necessarily interested in that information. Fast forward to the present happenings, and Deadpool found himself reading over multiple assessments that members of the "Council" put together about Ezekiel Stane.
First page. Age, nineteen… he was immediately labeled deranged. Wade's soul settled into reading the initial reports and assessments after Ezekiel was taken into custody for the first time. The mercenary glanced in his direction several times as the announcement for S.H.A.D.O.W. was made for all to see.
The report stated that Ezekiel had a broken view of the world, a distorted mind, with no sense of self. Charles Xavier was added into the mix immediately, with strict therapy sessions after Ezekiel was "picked up" by S.H.I.E.L.D.
…
"But, rest assured, the work being conducted through S.H.A.D.O.W. will be saving lives and reducing black market circulation in the long run. I am open to questions…"
…
Wade glanced up at Ezekiel when he heard him talking to the camera, but the face and the voice didn't match the person that stayed at his place for months. "Rae-Ann" wasn't the person that Wade was getting to know either. It wasn't the person that he wanted to see.
He looked back down at the file, and for some reason his nerves started wigging out. The word "deranged" kept showing up in the files, and an abnormal connection to Tony Stark's life began to fill the pages of the report.
It said the "Jackal" only experienced life by watching Tony Stark, and outside the work he did for his father, he watched him day and night. That knowledge wasn't common, and Wade didn't pick up on that when he made plans to kill Ezekiel.
Oh, and some files referred to Ezekiel as the "subject", which annoyed Wade to no end. He wondered who wrote those assessments, but that information wasn't clear. Apparently, the "subject's" mental state improved after a while. He was removed from a penitentiary, so Ezekiel's reports went from him being deranged to simply "unbalanced" and depressed.
The subject's connection to Victor Strange was viewed as something positive as well. Awwww… how cute. Several reports even stated that Charles Xavier approved of Ezekiel's communication with Stephen's younger brother. Victor was a keeper according to Xavier, and the mutant freak-shrink even encouraged it.
He didn't suppress anything related to Victor, so Wade kinda started feeling a little bitter. Why the fuck was he suppressed?
The mercenary still didn't get it, so he read on as Ezekiel answered questions for the top dogs at S.H.I.E.L.D… There were quite a few questions, and one person even identified himself as a "concerned investor".
…
Now, back to the file. Wade read that the death of someone named Rae-Ann put a stop to the "subject's" progress. A report even said that Ezekiel reverted back to his old "deranged" self after her death, and it said he almost broke his own arms to avoid being arrested once again.
Subject is now showing signs of extreme self harm. Subject was removed from S.H.I.E.L.D. custody after Steve Rogers intervened. Status unknown.
Ok. Wade Wilson had to close his eyes for a while and stop the flow of information on a pretty sad note. He checked the date on the last file he read, and he realized that the "subject" was in a pretty bad place just before they met.
He didn't know about that, and he didn't know about Ezekiel's biggest fear. Over and over, Charles Xavier informed Nick Fury about his thoughts and fears. Through his mandatory "therapy sessions", Ezekiel revealed that he was afraid of being evil, and becoming his father.
The "Jackal" also said that he didn't want to hurt Victor Strange, and intimacy was hard for him. Ezekiel explained intimacy was difficult because his father taught him how to use it… like a tool, or like a pawn in his game.
Obadiah Stane taught his son how to do that by using Tony Stark as an example. Wade had to stop on that note, because the files were getting pretty hard to read. All of it just rubbed him the wrong way, but he didn't want to skip through any of it.
That announcement felt more like a press conference. It took an eternity for it to end, but the questions eventually ceased. The persona of "Rae-Ann" didn't cease at all after everyone left. Wade took note of that as Ezekiel said goodbye to Nick Fury.
Wade listened as "Rae-Ann" told the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. that "she" planned to work on the new suits for her "teammates", then she planned to go home for the day. Wade heard all of that, and for once… the White Jackal caught him staring.
The mercenary didn't look away from the person in front of him tho, cuz suppressing things wasn't his style.
