Flower

"Thanks for lunch, Sara, you didn't have to buy. That orange chicken was really good." Nick told her.
The friends were at an open-all-night grocery store that happened to have a delicious deli.
"You're welcome, and it was my turn to buy, you bought last time we went and yeah the food was really good."
"Before we leave I want to buy some of those pretty purple plastic flowers." Nick said as he spotted them out of the corner of his eye.
"What'd you do?" Sara asked.
"Huh?" He responded.
"What'd you do to piss Jackie off that you have to buy her flowers?"
Nick laughed.
"They aren't for Jackie." He told her.
Sara raised her eyebrows at him.
"No, no, nothing like that." Nick clarified.
She motioned for him to continue.
"Well, I guess one is for Jackie but I want to buy one for Jackie and each of my girls, I don't know why but for the last couple of days Hundley has insisted that she wants a flower, so I figured that since these are only $1 each I'll be nice and finally buy her one, and just to be fair I'll buy one for each of my daughters, and Jackie too, and I'll get each of the boys a candy bar from the checkout line."
Nick grabbed what he wanted and then paid for his items before the pair headed back to the crime lab to finish their shift.
When Nick got home all the kids greeted him at the door like they did every Saturday morning when he got off.
"Hundley, I have something for you." He told her.
He presented her with the flower.
"No dada, bad dada." She said as she angrily crumpled the flower, threw it on the floor, and then stomped on it before leaving the room.
Nick's eyes got wide as he watched her leave, obviously that wasn't the reaction he was expecting.
Jackie, who had witnessed the entire thing was trying not to laugh out loud.
"What was that about? She's been saying for days she wants a flower and so I buy her a flower and she does that?" He asked Jackie.
"No Honey, you don't understand, we read one of Johnna's library books for a bedtime story and in the story there was a yellow lab puppy named Flower, Hundley wanted a puppy that looked like the puppy in the book, not an actual flower."
Nick burst out laughing, no wonder Hundley was so mad.
Hundley might not have appreciated Nick's gesture but he had much better luck with Jackie and the other girls. Nora even sweetly handed Jackie her flower and as she did so she said, "in water."
Even though they weren't real flowers Jackie smiled and gathered all their flowers (she picked up the one Hundley crumpled and straightened it out the best she could) and put them in a vase and filled it with water like Nora had requested. The boys also enjoyed their candy bars so all things considered Nick didn't think he did all that bad!
The End!
