The Invitation

It was a lazy Sunday afternoon. Bobby and Alex had just finished a lunch that they had prepared together, a rarity for them and an opportunity never missed when it arose. Since becoming a couple a few months before, they had settled into a routine on these rare days off work, especially weekends. Alex sat curled in Bobby's large recliner, a book in one hand, a cup of coffee cradled in the other, while Bobby was seated at his desk going through his mail.

A crisp cream-colored square envelope caught his eye in the sea of bills and junk mail. Bobby plucked it out of the pile with curiosity. The handwriting on the front, an elegant calligraphy script, read: Robert Goren, with his address below. He turned it over in his hand, opened it, and retrieved a thick folded paper. He unfolded the paper, feeling the texture under his fingertips. It was an invitation, the kind that didn't come often.

The words "Eastcrest High School, Class of 1979, 30th Reunion" were written in the same calligraphy as the envelope. He let out a groan, thinking he had left those memories behind.

Alex looked up from her book. "What's that?" she asked, her curiosity piqued by Bobby's sudden change in demeanor.

Bobby handed her the invitation. "Looks like it's my turn. It's an invitation to my high school reunion. Can you believe it's been thirty years?"

Alex's eyes lit up. "Ooh? That sounds like fun. Are we going?" She handed it back to him.

"I don't know," Bobby said. "It's a whole weekend at a lakeside lodge owned by one of my classmates. It's a bit of a drive. We'd have to request leave…"

"We should definitely go," Alex encouraged. "C'mon… It'll be a nice break from the city, and you can show me what you were like before you became the eccentric detective I know and love."

Bobby chuckled. "You make it sound like I've changed so much. I wasn't exactly a social butterfly then either."

"Well, I'd love to see the 'before' picture," Alex teased. "Maybe I can learn some embarrassing stories to hold over your head."

Bobby considered her words, tapping the invitation against his chin. "Alright, but you have to put in the leave request with Ross."
