Chapter 1 A Royal Introduction

Setting: Cambury, Monaco (January 2017)

The Princess's World

The morning sun bathed the grand halls of Cambury Palace in a soft, golden light. The ornate tapestries and marble floors reflected the opulence of a life lived in privilege, but for 22-year-old Princess Anastasia von Steel, or Ana as she preferred, it was a gilded cage. She stood at her bedroom window, gazing out at the manicured gardens below, feeling a familiar pang of restlessness.

Ana's life was meticulously planned, from her education to her daily schedule. Every move she made was scrutinized by her family, advisors, and the public. Though she loved her family dearly, the weight of her royal duties often felt suffocating. She had grown up understanding the importance of her role, but the longing for a life beyond the palace walls had only intensified over the years.

A Passion for Literature

Ana found solace in her books. The palace's extensive library had become her refuge, a place where she could escape into the worlds of Austen, Dickens, and Woolf. Her passion for literature was well-known, but few understood the depth of her yearning to experience the world beyond the pages.

She dreamed of studying abroad, of walking through university halls as just another student, not as a princess. Ana had spent countless nights researching universities, her heart settling on the University of Washington in Seattle. The idea of living in a city where she could blend in, where no one would bow or curtsy, where she could simply be Ana, was intoxicating.

Secret Plans

One evening, with the determination that had always driven her, Ana made a decision. She would apply to the University of Washington, despite knowing that her family might object. It was a bold move, one that required careful planning. She used a pseudonym, ensuring that her royal status would not influence the application process.

The waiting was agonizing, but when the acceptance letter arrived, Ana's heart soared. It was the first step towards the life she had always dreamed of, but she knew it wouldn't be easy to convince her parents to let her go.

Family Negotiations

Ana's heart raced as she entered the royal study, where her parents, King Raymond and Queen Carla, were discussing the upcoming state events. Her younger brother, Prince Anthony, was lounging on a nearby couch, casually flipping through a magazine.

"Mother, Father," Ana began, her voice steady despite the nerves churning in her stomach. "There's something I need to discuss with you."

Her parents looked up, their expressions curious but kind. Ana took a deep breath and began to explain her desire to study abroad. She spoke of her love for literature, her need to experience life outside the palace, and the opportunity that had been presented to her.

At first, there was silence. Queen Carla exchanged a glance with King Raymond, their expressions unreadable. Anthony sat up, his curiosity piqued.

"You want to leave Cambury?" King Raymond's voice was calm but carried the weight of his authority.

"Just for a few months," Ana clarified quickly. "It's a study program, not a permanent move. I'll be back in time for my duties here."

Queen Carla sighed softly. "Ana, your responsibilities as a princess are not something you can simply put on hold."

"I know," Ana replied, her voice tinged with desperation. "But I need this. I need to see the world outside of Cambury, to learn and grow in ways that I can't do here."

There was a long pause before King Raymond spoke again. "You understand that your safety is our utmost concern?"

"Yes, which is why I would bring Sawyer with me," Ana said, referring to her trusted bodyguard. "I wouldn't go alone."

Queen Carla studied her daughter's face, seeing the determination in her eyes. She knew that this was important to Ana, perhaps more important than anything else had been before.

"Very well," Queen Carla said, her voice gentle but firm. "You may go, but you will keep in close contact with us, and Sawyer will stay by your side at all times."

Ana's heart leaped with joy. "Thank you, Mother. Father."

Anthony, who had been silently observing, grinned. "Looks like I'll have to hold down the fort while you're gone, sis."

Ana laughed, the relief washing over her. She had won this battle, but she knew the challenges were only just beginning.

The Challenges Ahead

As Ana left the study, her mind was a whirlwind of emotions. She was excited, nervous, and determined. The potential exposure of her royal status was a constant fear, one that could bring her dream crashing down around her. The expectations of her family and the pressures of her duties loomed over her like a dark cloud.

Yet, for the first time in her life, Ana felt like she was taking control of her destiny. She was about to embark on a journey that would change her forever, and she was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

As she walked through the grand halls of the palace, Ana couldn't help but smile. Her life was about to change in ways she couldn't even imagine, and she was ready to embrace it all.
