Now, let's begin our story!

The Cat Who Opened His Eyes

It was a beautiful afternoon in the city of Manhattan. Birds were flying around, with some singing happily, while people were walking the streets and driving their vehicles, moving around the city like busy bees.

Walking down a mostly empty street was a female hairless cat. Her skin was a soft pink color, and her eyes were a pretty blue. She had two pointy ears, a somewhat pointed snout, and a long pointy tail that was pretty slim. Around her neck was a gold coin with a purple collar going through the quatrefoil-shaped hole in the middle of it.

"The nerve of that human family!" She quietly growled as she walked down the street. "I can't believe they wanted to get me 'spayed.'" She shivered with disgust at the thought. "Such a horrid practice. Why don't they do it to themselves before they even think of doing it to others!" She spat as she turned the corner.

'Now where am I going to sleep tonight?' She thought as she continued to walk down the street. 'Definitely not in a cardboard box outside. Maybe I can sneak into a nice restaurant or-' Her train of thought was cut off as she heard a young male voice say "Well hello there."

'Huh?' She thought as she looked to where she'd heard the voice, and spotted an 18-year-old male human who was 6 foot 2 inch tall standing about a foot away from her, a green backpack on his back. He had light brownish blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and lightly tanned skin. He was wearing grey shorts, red sneakers, white socks, a blue short sleeve shirt, and a leather necklace with a fox and cat made of some sort of purple stone or gem as the centerpiece.

"What are you doing out here?" He said as he knelt before her to get a closer look. "Do you want to come home with me?"

'Hmm, do I really want to go home with this kid?' The cat thought to herself, before shrugging after a few seconds. 'Eh, if things don't go well, I'll just leave.' She then let out a simple "Meow," and put one of her paws on his knee.

"Well, alright then," The boy said with a smile, before he gently picked her up with his arms and stood back up. He then began walking down the street, a smile on his face as he went. 'I hope this cat behaves when I get home,' He thought as he walked across an intersection and went down Chase Street. 'I have been looking for a cat to have as my own for a while now.'

'I hope this kid has some good food,' The cat thought as he took a right after walking down Chase Street for several minutes and went down Dally Avenue. 'I'm pretty hungry.'

Eventually, after walking for several more minutes, the boy walked up to a red brick, three-story townhouse that had a light red wood front door, several windows with white trim on the front, a black roof, and white steps leading up to the front door. The numbers "189" were on the upper portion of the front door in bronze, which matched the mail slot further down.

The boy walked up the stairs and pulled out a key from his right pocket while holding the cat with his left arm, before unlocking the door and pushing it open. The walls inside the house were painted a nice red, and several paintings of nature were on the walls. A set of stairs went up to the second floor, while the hallway opened up on the left and at the rear. "So, this is my home," he said as he set the cat down on the light brown wood that made up the floor of the hallway.

'Hmm, not bad so far,' The cat thought as she looked around at the hallway. 'I wonder where his family is.' She then walked over to the room to the left, and found herself in what must have been the living room. Said room had light brown carpet, red walls, a large gray couch, a couple lamps, a fireplace in one corner, and a large TV sitting on a black entertainment center that had a glass front, letting her see that there was both a DVD and VHS player in it, while several movies were on either side of the TV. 'Hmm, not bad, not bad,' She thought as she moved on to the next room, which was the kitchen and dining room.

The dining room and kitchen had light brown hardwood floors that matched the hallway floor, and a couple windows and one red door that opened up to a small, fenced-in backyard. A small light brown, round table with four chairs around it sat in the dining room, while a large dark red China cabinet sat to one side, mostly empty. The kitchen had a marble countertop, a large white fridge, a white dishwasher, a black toaster, a black oven, and a large two-compartment sink. It also had red walls, a tan ceiling, and several lights hanging over the counter.

There was another set of stairs, leading presumably to the basement, and an open doorway that led to a white laundry room that had a washer and dryer, both silver in color, and a large laundry basket next to it. 'Not bad. Not bad,' She thought as she looked around once more, before heading over to the hallway stairs and heading up to the second floor. The hallway here was carpeted like the living room, and had similar paintings and pictures hanging on the walls. She saw a trapdoor at one end of the hallway, leading presumably to the attic, and an open doorway that led to a small bathroom. She then saw that there were a few more doorways in the hallway. Two of them led to guest bedrooms, while one led to a closet.

Another door was locked, and the last door led to what appeared to be the main bedroom, which confused her quite a bit. 'Where is the boy's family?' She thought as she looked at the main bedroom, which was large, with cream-colored walls, brown carpet, and a ceiling fan. There was a large king-sized bed with two small nightstands on either side of it, one of them having a lamp on it, a large, beautiful rug sitting in front of the bed, and a dresser sitting on the far side of the room. A flat screen tv stood against the wall in a small black entertainment center across from the foot of the bed, while a comfy recliner was set next to an empty bookshelf and a tall lamp located near a window.

The bookshelf was almost filled to the brim with books, while a large stack of puzzles sat next to it. The entertainment center had multiple gaming consoles, video games, and movies on its shelves and in its drawers, while a small garbage can sat in the corner next to the bedroom door. The corner of the left and back walls had a guitar and recording equipment in it, while the nearby windows covered by animal-themed curtains. Posters of animals and some video games were hung on the walls. There was a large empty space occupied only by a window on the left wall between the bedroom door and the corner with the guitar.

'Yeesh, his family must be loaded with cash!' She thought as she looked at the room once more for a few more seconds, before heading back downstairs.

She found the boy in the kitchen, rummaging through the refrigerator for something. "So, would you like to eat tuna or salmon?" He asked her as he pulled out two packs of fish, one labeled "Tuna" and the other "Salmon."

'Oh my goodness salmon!' She exclaimed internally, reaching out to the salmon package.

Seeing this, the boy smiled and put the tuna package away, before taking out a plate and opening the salmon package, setting the fresh slab of salmon on the plate before setting it down on the floor. She immediately began eating the salmon, and nearly mewed in happiness. 'It's fresh!' She thought as she took another bite. 'I haven't had fresh salmon in a looong time! Oh, I think I'm going to like this kid.'

As she ate, he continued to speak. "So, it's just me living here," he said. "My adoptive mom's constantly traveling, but she wanted me to have some stability, so she's making me live here."

'Huh, well at least his mom wants him to have stability,' The cat thought as she continued to eat. 'Not that I care or anything.'

"You might have heard of her," He continued. "Her name's Jane Niles."

Upon hearing that name, the cat froze in place, a half-eaten chunk of tuna falling out of her mouth onto the plate. 'THE JANE NILES?!' The cat thought with shock, her eyes wide. 'I didn't know she had a kid?!'

"Yeah, you probably didn't know she had a kid," he continued, not seeing the cat's reaction. "She's been keeping my existence on the down-low so that I wouldn't be harassed by people."

'"Harassed?" Kid you'd be a target for kidnapping!' She thought as she looked up at the boy. 'People would use you as leverage against your mother in order to get her most prized potion recipes. Or, if she told you at all about the magical world and taught you her ways, they might use you for your skills!''

"It sucks, not being able to tell people who my mom is," he said with a sigh. "I mean, everyone else at school gets to talk about what their mom cooked for dinner, or what she does for a living, while I can't say a word." He frowned at that. "It really sucks."

'Yeah, it does kid,' the cat thought as she resumed eating. 'But it's for your own good.'

After being silent for several seconds, Gavin spoke again. "Anyways, I need to name you," He said as he looked over at the cat, who rolled her eyes upon hearing that.

'Greaaaat! Just greaaat! What crappy name am I going to be given this time?' She thought as she got closer to finishing her salmon.

"Hmmm," Gavin hummed as he walked over to her and sat down to get a closer look at her. "No, Bast wouldn't be a good name for you. Maybe Jade?"

'Ugh! Like I want to be named after a stone!' The cat thought with a huff as she finished her salmon.

"That could possibly work," He said, before his eyes landed on the coin around her neck. "Wait, how about an Asian name?" He asked her. 'That coin is definitely Asian. Maybe if I got a closer look.' He then started reaching out to the coin, but stopped when she hissed at him.

'No way in hell are you taking this coin from me kid!' The cat thought. 'It's mine!'

"Ooookay then, I won't try to take it," he said, before humming in thought once more. He then sighed. 'Man, I really don't know many Asian names,' he thought before pulling out his phone. 'Internet, don't fail me now!'

After searching for female Asian names, he found one that he liked. "I think I'll call you Yan Yan," he replied, causing the cat to stiffen. "It means 'two swallow birds or elegant' in Chinese."

'How in the fuck did he find my name?! It's not even that popular!' The cat, whose real name was indeed Yan Yan, thought as she looked up at the boy.

"Yeah, I'll call you that," he continued with a nod as he put up his phone. "It's not a popular name, and I like to use names that aren't popular at times."

'Ooookay then,' Yan Yan thought upon hearing his reasoning. 'It's still crazy he managed to find my real name without me telling him.'

"Well, I better start on my homework," he said as he got back up and started heading to the stairs. "Your water bowl is in the laundry room. After I'm done with my homework, I'll play with you for a little bit." He then paused as he remembered something else. "Oh, I almost forgot. Litterbox is in the laundry room as well."

Upon hearing that, Yan Yan snapped. "Listen here boy!" She yelled at him, causing his eyes to widen to the size of saucers as he looked at the cat, who was standing on her hind legs with her paws on her hips. "I can deal with the food from a can, and the toys. But I do not! Need. A litterbox!"

Gavin was quiet for at least 30 seconds before he spoke again, his voice full of surprise and shock. "You can talk?" He asked her.

"Shit," Yan Yan said as she realized she just blew her cover, before sighing. "Yes, I can talk. I'm a magical creature."

"Wait, magic is real?!" he asked with even wider eyes. "I thought it was fake. A trick of the mind."

"Oh, it's real," She replied matter-of-factly. "How else am I talking to you right now?"

He was quiet for several seconds upon hearing this, trying to come up with some answer to her question. He then sighed. "It's the only thing that makes sense," he replied. "I'm not on drugs, I'm not dreaming, and I'm certainly not insane." He sighed again as he ran a hand over his face. "God this is crazy."

"Yeah, it is kid," She said, causing him to frown.

"Hey, I'm 18 years old, not 10," He replied. "So stop calling me a kid."

"I don't think so, seeing I'm 600 years old, and still young," She said matter-of-factly. "So to me, you're a kid."

"Oh," He replied, surprised to hear that. 'She's 600 years old, and still young?! How old will she have to be to be considered old?!' He thought with confusion, before shaking his head a little. 'I ain't asking her that! No way in Hell!' "So, what can you do besides live so long and talk?" he asked her as he sat down in a nearby chair.

"Oh, I can do many things," Yan Yan replied with a chuckle. "I can use my claws to cut through a plane wing, and I'm an expert at martial arts," She continued, doing some martial arts poses as she spoke. "I also know quite a few languages."

"Neat," he said as she finished posing. "So, what's your name? I'm guessing it's not Yan Yan."

"Actually kid, that is my name," She replied, making his eyes widen. "I don't know how, but you found it."

"You're kidding me," He said, prompting her to shake her head side to side. "Huh. How about that." He then opened his mouth to ask another question, but was prevented from speaking upon hearing the front door open and a mature female voice say "I'm hooome!" before the door could be heard getting shut and locked once more.

"Mom?!" Gavin said with surprise as he got up from his seat and walked to the hallway, with Yan Yan following him.

There, standing in the hallway with her large pink purse, was his adoptive mother Jane Niles. She stood 6 feet tall, and had long blonde hair, lightly tanned skin, and green eyes. She was wearing a red blouse that tightly hugged her II-cup chest, a tan skirt that clung to her large ass, and black shoes.

"Hey sweetie," His mother said upon seeing him, holding her arms open for a hug, which he gladly did. "It's good to see you."

"It's good to see you as well mom," He replied as he hugged her tightly, her large breasts pressing into his face as he did so.

After several seconds had passed, they let go of each other, and Jane then spotted Yan Yan. "Oh, and who is this?" She asked him, gesturing to the cat. "I see you found yourself a pet."

He opened his mouth to respond to her, but was interrupted by Yan Yan, who said, "The name's Yan Yan Miss Niles."

Jane's eyes widened at that, which sent Gavin into a slight panic. "Mom, don't freak out. Please!" He said to her, which caused Yan Yan to start chuckling. "What?"

"Kid, there's no reason to panic," Yan Yan said as she chuckled. "Your mom knows all about the magical world."

"Wait, she does?" He said before turning back to his mother. "You do?"

"I…I do son," She replied with a sigh. "Come. I have some explaining to do." She then led him and Yan Yan to the living room. "Sit please."

Once the two had sat on the couch, Jane began to speak. "Son, I don't know how much Yan Yan here told you," She began, frowning a little at the cat. "But magic is indeed real. As are magical creatures, such as unicorns and fairies. I myself am a magical creature."

"Wait, you are?" He said, surprised to hear that. "What kind?"

"You'll see," Jane said as she pulled out a small purple bottle from her purse and popped it open, before drinking the whole thing. A few seconds passed by, before a cloud of purple smoke began to appear, swirling around Jane at high speeds. Said cloud grew bigger and bigger, before it eventually covered her entire body.

The cloud grew even bigger and bigger for several more seconds, before it dissipated. His jaw then dropped at what he saw before him, while Yan Yan just smiled at his reaction.

"Tada!" Jane said as she stood there. From her waist up, nothing had changed at all, other than her height being increased by about half a foot. But everything had changed going down.

The body of a horse stood in place of her legs. The fur of the horse was a light chocolate brown, and he could see that it was well muscled. A long black tail swung behind her.

"So, what do you think?" She continued.

"I uh, I," Gavin began, trying to think of something to say. "Well, it's certainly a surprise. But not a bad one."

"Oh good!" Jane said with a relieved look on her face.

"So, was that a potion you used?" he asked her, prompting her to nod. "Okay. Where'd you get it from?"

"I made it," She replied, causing his eyes to widen with surprise.

"Wait, you made that?" He asked her, shock in his voice.

"Well yeah kid, she just said that," Yan Yan replied. "That's what she's famous for in the magical community. Her potions have the best quality."

"Thanks for the compliment," jane said with a small blush, one of her hoofs tapping on the floor.

"Okay, wait," He said as he put a hand to his head. "You're saying she's quite famous in the magical community for making potions? Does that mean you get all your money from that, and not writing?" He asked his mother.

"Well, yeah," Jane replied. "I make most of my money from the potions. The writing is mostly a cover."

"Okay," he said, understanding what she was saying. "So, why didn't you tell me about any of this before?" He asked.

"I was waiting till your next birthday," Jane answered him, before looking at Yan Yan with a frown. "But someone here had to ruin it."

"Hey, I was going to have to use a litterbox!" Yan Yan snapped. "You have any idea how demeaning that is?"

"And yet I presume you were hiding by acting as a domestic cat? So you probably used a litterbox before," Jane said, causing Yan Yan to frown.

"Well, yeah, but after the last family I swore to never use one again," She replied.

"Even so, what if it hadn't been my son who found you?" Jane asked. "What if it was a human who had no connections at all to the magical community?"

"Eh, I would have run off if that happened," Yan Yan replied with a wave of her paw. "They'd probably think they were crazy, or drunk too much, or something like that."

"That's a very big risk to take though," Jane stated matter-of-factly. "What if they'd thought they weren't seeing things? What if they went searching for magical creatures? That's a security risk, and you know it."

"I could take care of it," Yan Yan replied as she laid back on the couch, crossing her legs. "I might not be the best with memory spells and potions, but I can still do them."

"Even so, I think you need to be punished for this," Jane said. "And I think I have the perfect one in mind. You are to become my son's magical animal guardian."

"Wait, what?!" Yan Yan exclaimed with shock, nearly falling off the couch.

"What?" Gavin said with confusion. "What the heck's a magical animal guardian?"

"A magical animal guardian is a magical animal who is assigned to help train the one they are assigned to, as well as provide tips and give information when necessary," Jane explained, before Yan Yan hopped off the couch.

"And I am not doing that!" Yan Yan replied before Gavin could speak again. "All I want is a place to stay with plenty of catnip and food. Not a job where I have to teach someone how to fight!"

"Well, maybe you should have kept that in mind before you revealed to my son that magic, and thus the magical community, exists," Jane stated firmly to her, causing Yan Yan to frown and cross her arms as she sat back on the couch.

"Hold on a minute, why is it such a big deal humans remain unaware of the magical community?" He asked the two of them.

"It's because there are so many more humans than us," Jane replied. "It used to not be this way long ago. But as humans grew in number and in power, they came into conflict with some magic groups who wanted to put humans down, and destroyed them. Fearing that the humans would try to destroy the rest of the magical community, they went into hiding, and now, humans have forgotten all about us, and embraced science instead of magic. That's why humans as a rule need to remain unaware of the magical community."

"Oh," Gavin said, before he got a confused look on his face. "Wait, then why did you adopt me? Wouldn't that make me a security risk?"

"I'm curious about that as well," Yan Yan said as she looked at Jane. "Why'd you adopt a human?"

"I've always had a soft spot for humans," Jane replied. "Ever since I was a child I found them to be fascinating. Yes, they've destroyed a lot of nature, and caused multiple wars. But I couldn't help myself. So, when I was old enough, I set out to adopt one. I searched for, oh, probably around 60-70 years, before I found one that was perfect!"

"Him?" Yan Yan said, gesturing to him with a paw. "What makes him perfect?"

"Gavin here was found at an orphanage as an 8 month old baby," She replied. "A note was found with him, explaining he had no living relatives. I did my own digging, and found that the note was right. He has no living relatives. So, I chose him to adopt."

"Oh," Yan Yan said, feeling a bit bad about the hand the kid had been given. "I see."

"Hold on a minute, mom," Gavin said, having realized something. "You said you were searching for a child to adopt for 60-70 years? How long do centaurs live for?"

"Oh, we can easily live to be around 290 years old. The oldest lived to be 420," Jane replied. "I aim to become older than that."

"Really?" He said, prompting her to nod. "Oh." He was quiet for several seconds, taking all that info in, before he spoke again. "So, what other magical creatures exist?"

"Well, there's fairies, trolls, goblins, mermaids, unicorns, griffins, pixies, ogres, giants, witches, dwarves, and many more," His mother replied, listing them off on her fingers as she spoke. "Oh, and then there's the dragons. They are the protectors of magic and beings who use it. They keep law and order in the community."

"Wow," He said after hearing that. "All of that exists. That's incredible."

"It really is," his mother replied with a nod, before she turned to Yan Yan once more. "Now, I believe you and I need to go get your guardian license."

"Uggggh!" Yan Yan groaned upon hearing that. "Right now?"

"Yes, right now," Jane replied with a nod. She then pulled out another potion, this one green in color, and drank it, turning her back to her human form with a puff of green smoke. "We'll be back in a few hours Gavin," She said to him, before she headed to the front door with Yan Yan in tow.

"Um, okay," Gavin said in response as they left, his mind reeling from all the information he had just learned.

Once the door was shut, silence filled the apartment as he sat there, staring into nothingness. 'This is such a shock!' He thought, his eyes wide. 'Magic. Is. Real!'

He sat there for a few more minutes, before sighing as he got up and headed to the kitchen. 'I need a drink before I think about this anymore,' He thought as he got to the kitchen and went over to the fridge. He then opened it and pulled out a Sprite, opening it as he shut the fridge before taking a big sip.

Once he'd done that, he went up to his room, and sat on his bed, processing what he had just witnessed/learned.

His life was never going to be the same.

Well, this was an interesting chapter!

Can't wait to write more!

Quatrefoil (anciently referred to as a caterfoil) is a symmetrical shape which forms the overall outline of four partially overlapping circles of the same diameter. It's basically a four-leafed clover, without the stem.
