On with the story! :)
The Bond Of A Happy Family
Elizabeth was playing hopscotch outside her home while her younger brother Evan was riding his bike in a circle nearby. Michael was on the porch reading a book while keeping an eye on his younger siblings. "Evan, keep an eye out for cars," he cautioned his younger brother.
"I will, Mike," the younger boy promised.
"Elizabeth, you keep an eye out for cars too," Michael said.
She rolled her eyes playfully, but nodded. "Don't worry, Mike, I am," she said. "Do you think Daddy will be home soon?"
"Mom did say he was just covering a co-worker's shift for a few hours, so yeah, Dad should be home soon."
The front door opened and their mother came out to check on them, bringing glasses of fruit punch on a tray. "You kids thirsty?" She asked.
"Fruit punch!" Evan cheered as he quickly rode up and parked his bike by the porch, Elizabeth at his heels as she abandoned her hopscotch game in favor of having some fruit punch.
"Thanks, Mom," Michael said as he and his siblings enjoyed the sweet drink. "Is Dad on his way home yet?"
"He should be," their mother said. "He should be pulling up at any moment now."
The phone rang right then and she went to answer it. "Hello?" She said.
"Hi, Clara," she heard and smiled as she recognized her husband's voice.
"Hi, William. The children were just asking if you were on your way home," she said.
"I'm just leaving now. We had one of the ovens malfunction and so it took a bit of time to fix that and serve the customers," he said. "Should I pick up anything from the store before I come home?"
"We're good until I go food shopping in a couple days," Clara replied.
"Alright. What's for dinner?"
"Pork ribs with steamed vegetables and rice."
William smiled as he thought about his wife's cooking. "That sounds delicious," he said. "I'm heading out now."
"Drive carefully, hon."
Clara hung up the phone and went outside to talk to the kids. "Kids, your father is on his way home," she said. "Time to put away your toys and wash up. Elizabeth, it's your turn to set the table tonight. Evan, you go pick a movie for us to watch after dinner. Michael, make sure the house is locked up."
"Yes, Mama," Elizabeth said as she gathered her up the colored chalk she had been using. Evan got his bike and Michael grabbed the three empty glasses and carried them inside. His siblings put their toys away in the covered porch and then went inside to wash up.
Michael checked all the windows and the doors, making sure everything was secure before waiting by the front door for his father. Elizabeth set the table before joining him and they were soon joined by Evan, who had picked a movie and put it in the living room. All three stood patiently by the window to see their father's car.
William smiled as he saw his house come into view. "Ah, home sweet home," he said, pulling into the driveway and hopping out of the car, locking it up before going to the front door. Before he could reach the door knob, it opened and he just braced himself in time to catch his daughter and youngest son, who jumped at him happily.
"Daddy! Daddy!" His daughter said happily.
"Daddy!" Evan echoed his sister as both hugged him.
Smiling, William scooped them up into his arms and hugged them back. "Hello, my little ones," he said before seeing Michael there too. "Hey, Mike, how was school today?"
"It was okay, though my teacher was mad that the principal punished her son for bullying Liz and Evan," the eldest boy said.
"Let her be mad," William said. "No one bullies my children."
"And bullying is never right," Elizabeth said.
"That's right, sweetie," her father said before setting them down so that he could give Michael a hug. The teen accepted it, happy that his dad was home. "Alright, let's wash up and be off to the dinner table to enjoy the meal your mother worked hard on."
The kids headed for the dining room while William went to greet his wife, coming up behind her and hugging her from behind. "Hello, beautiful," he said to her lovingly.
She turned to look at him with a smile. "Hello, handsome," she said, giving him a kiss. "How was work?"
"Busy, but the good news is there were no nasty customers today," he said.
"How is that waitress that got hurt last week by that one rude customer?" Clara asked.
"She's doing alright. Thankfully her wrist wasn't sprained or broken and she was back today working," William said. "The boss said if that customer came back, he'd kick him out."
"Good," his wife said. "That girl didn't deserve that man's rudeness all because he let his coffee get cold."
William chuckled. "I pretended not to see, but one of the waiters poured him another cup of coffee when the man wasn't looking and it was so bitter the man made such a face."
Clara tried not to laugh. "The bottom of the pot?" She asked.
"Yup," he said. "The manager even gave him permission to do so."
Smiling, Clara began serving up dinner and William helped her and it wasn't long before the family was sitting at the table and eating the delicious meal. "Elizabeth, how was school today?" William asked.
"Good. That mean girl wasn't there today," she said.
"She's been bothering you again?" Clara asked.
"Yeah. The other day, she broke my pencils. Michael got me some new ones after my teacher wouldn't give me a new pencil."
"Did the teacher not have any extra pencils?" William asked.
"No, she did. But the mean girl's daddy is a police officer."
"I think I know who you're talking about," her father said. "He comes in tomorrow afternoon for lunch, I believe. I'll have a chat with him about his daughter's behavoir then."
"Daddy, will I get to go to school soon like Mike and Liz?" Evan asked.
"In another year or so, buddy," William said, smiling at his youngest son.
"He's doing very well on reading, dear," Clara said to her husband. "He read three whole paragraphs in the newspaper by himself today."
"What was the story about?" Her husband asked.
"The new playground at the park," Evan said, eagerly. "Can we go there when it's ready, Daddy?"
"You bet we can, kiddo," William said, smiling.
He felt like the luckiest man in the world to have such a wonderful family.
So like I said, this will be AU. The Bite of '83 never happened and as mentioned above, the animatronics will not be in the story.
