Nolan's Journal Chapter 9
"The good news is that Luna got Gino and his husband qualified to foster the boy that Celina and I found at the community center. He still isn't talking, but he doesn't shrink into a corner every time a woman is within eyeshot anymore. According to Luna, that's real progress. He'll be seeing a child psychologist that Gino thinks is first-class. Hopefully, he'll open up eventually.
"Celina found someone in the neighborhood around the center who thought she'd seen him with a woman at the supermarket once. She remembered because the woman had yelled at him and smacked him. No wonder he was afraid. But every mother in the neighborhood shops at that supermarket. It's the only one in the area, so the fact that the boy was seen there, doesn't help much. And Celina's source couldn't give much of a description. Still, his presence there does suggest that he's local. And the yell was in English. That's a start.
"Bailey is getting a front-row seat to the hassles of two-career families trying to find decent childcare – even when they can afford it. Money's never been an obstacle for Angela and Wesley. His trust fund more than covers any holes in the family budget. Angela and Wesley's nanny brought a gun into the house without securing it properly or even notifying them. When Angela found out she fired her on the spot. Unfortunately, they haven't been able to find another one they feel is fully qualified. Nyla and James need someone as well. Either couple would have been happy with Tamara, but she's got another gig. She'll also be busy moving out of Lucy's apartment which will make her even less available.
"Grey went out on patrol with Lucy. I guess he was worried about her after her breakup with Tim. We all are. She's mostly been trying to put up a brave front, but Angela found her crying in the locker room a couple of times. Lucy also slipped and put a sizable gash in her arm while she was chasing down a purse snatcher. She got the guy anyway, and Bailey patched her up. Bailey wouldn't tell me what Lucy said to her, but I got the impression that Lucy cried on her shoulder a little. If there's anyone who's experienced inexplicable behavior from a guy – not me, her ex, Jason – it's Bailey. I'm guessing she was a very sympathetic listener.
"Since being kicked loose from Metro, Tim isn't talking to anyone. He goes out on patrol, turns in his reports, and leaves. I can tell Grey is also worried about him. He probably has some kind of a plan in mind. If he doesn't, chances are that Luna will suggest one. She is the social worker in the family.
"I've been trying to talk Henry into coming to LA for a visit. He flew right out again after being my best man at the wedding. It made sense. Bailey and I were going off on our honeymoon, and he had work to do back in Japan. Still, it would be great to talk to him face to face instead of laptop to laptop. Maybe Bailey's longings for a family are getting to me. I'd love to just be able to spend a few hours with my son. We wouldn't have to do anything special, maybe go to a movie or share a pizza. Much as I adore my time with Bailey and like hanging around with my cop friends, I miss being with Henry. I miss it a lot."
"Picking up from last night, I found out today that Tamara is moving out of Lucy's apartment right away. As originally planned, that would have made sense, with Tim spending so much time there with Lucy. I know from dorm life that it can be a real pain trying to get some sleep when lovemaking sounds are coming through the wall. As much as Tamara was a cheerleader for Lucy's relationship with Tim, it couldn't have been comfortable for her. Without Tamara, Lucy is really going to be alone. We'll all try to be there for her, but at the same time, no one at Mid-Wilshire wants to get in the middle of the breakup. We all have to work with both Lucy and Tim. That could be a real headache for Grey when he makes assignments. I wouldn't want to be in his shoes.
"Gino and his husband got to visit today with the boy Celina and I found. On that front, it was a red-letter day. The boy said his first word. Two words, actually, 'ice cream.' They got him some, which he loved, right down to licking the plastic spoon and the paper cup. At least there's something that will make him happy.
"Tonight is the last night of Bailey's weekly firehouse stint. Of course, when she comes home tomorrow, I'll be on duty. I'll be checking on the progress at the center after that, but then we'll have the evening together. I wouldn't be surprised if she brings up the baby issue again. I don't know if she knows that Angela and Wesley and Nyla and James are still trying to find a nanny. If she doesn't, I'll tell her. I don't know if that will make a difference, but she needs to understand just how hard finding adequate childcare can be. Still, as with other challenges in her life – except for Jason – if need be, she'll face it head-on.
"According to Wesley, Monica Stevens is back in court for Oscar Hutchinson. She's going after the corrections personnel who were supposed to be protecting him. She's asked for a jury trial. I guess she thinks she can drum up some sympathy for a man who was willing to give up a kidney for his daughter. Wesley says there's no way that the counsel for the Department of Corrections will let her get away with that. He thinks that the minute they introduce that Oscar was in prison, it opens the door for the defense council to introduce Oscar's prior bad acts, including stabbing Wesley. Kidney or no kidney, the man is the scum of the earth. I wish I didn't, but I know Oscar. He can convince anyone of just about anything. If he gets on the stand to testify, he might just be able to take in enough jury members to win his case. Still, whether he does or not, that won't get him out of prison. Wait! What if the suit is a scheme to get him out of prison to testify and he makes another break for it? The only problem with that is that he wouldn't get his award and Monica isn't representing him for her health. She'd want to be paid. Or maybe she's involved with some overarching plan that has yet to rear its ugly head. It would be like her. I'm going to keep track of the case and see where it's heading."
