"What do you think?"
Clementine looked back at Omid as he walked beside Christa and asked again about what they should name their child. It had been several months since everything in Savannah, and Christa was now visibly pregnant. She smiled at the couple, happy that they had made it so far.
"Omid, you can't be serious," Christa said as she adjusted her grip on the shotgun she carried.
"Oh, yes he can," Carley added. She had been walking ahead of the group. Due to her ever-vigilant demeanor as she scanned the horizon and surrounding for walkers and people, Clementine hadn't thought she was listening to the couple. "Men have a thing about juniors. It's cute."
"Oh, c'mon, Carley," Lee said from Clementine's side. "Who doesn't want a little mini-me?"
"I said it was cute," Carley said, throwing back a smile to the group before training her eyes on the surroundings. The gas station they had found was surrounded by trees. Predators could be anywhere.
"It's not cute," Christa argued. "It's confusing."
"What if it's a girl," Clementine asked.
"Then we'll name her Christa," Omid shrugged. "I don't care."
"You're not taking this seriously."
"I take everything seriously, especially little Omid's future."
The group laughed as they approached the bathroom.
"Keep talking and you'll be sleeping in the rain tonight," Christa approached the men's room. "Remember that time in Barstow?"
"Vegas weekend," Omid replied.
With a smile, she headed inside. Carley -Clementine noticed- rolled her eyes. For some reason.
"Hey, uh, Lee. Why don't you keep watch while the ladies clean up in the bathroom?"
Lee shook his head but said with a sigh, "Fine. Just don't take too long in there."
"Thanks man! You're the best." Omid went into the men's room.
"I guess she can't get more pregnant," Carley said. Before Clementine could ask what she meant by that, Carley ushered her into the bathroom.
Much to Clementine's delight, the bathroom had a working sink. As Carley checked the stalls, Clementine washed her face, examining the changes. She felt like she had aged much more than she looked.
"Still adorable, after all this mess." Carley joined her at the sink, washing her face. In the mirror reflected a change in her face. There was a tiny scar where a knife had almost taken out her eye. Her formerly pristine white button down was now dingy and stretched out, though it was mostly covered by a new, black leather jacket. Her black skirt had been discarded for something with more coverage, brown hiking pants. She had even lucked into a pair of cargo boots, though they were half a size too big, a problem alleviated by socks and stuffing. "Y'know, I guess that's one perk of being so little with all this going on. You don't have to worry about wrinkles. Meanwhile, I look as worn out as this shirt." The older woman smiled down at the 10 year old standing beside her.
"Yeah, I guess. But I get into a lot of trouble being this small….and I get people hurt." Clementine reflected on all the people that had died since this all started. Ben, Duck, Katjaa, Doug, Mark. And she hadn't been able to save a single one of them. And then there was Kenny. If she hadn't been talking to the Stranger, if she had told Lee that there was someone on the walkie, they might not have lost Kenny. "I'm useless."
"Hey, kid. Don't say that. You saved me back at the drugstore."
Clementine hardly thought that counted. Walkers had already broken in, busting into the windows. All she had done was pass Carley ammo since she was close by. Then Lee went and saved Dough from the Walkers in the window while Carley, ever the sharpshooter, took out the walkers nearby. Carley had mostly saved herself. And besides that…"But you had to save me from that man in Savannah."
"That just makes us even."
"I guess."
"Hey, Clem." Carley knelt down to look Clementine in the eyes. "I know it may not seem like much, but there's a lot of advantages to being you. You give the group hope and a reason to live on. I can't imagine what any of us would do without you. And as long as I'm here, I've got your back. And I feel a lot safer knowing you've got mine."
