A/N: Another Wednesday, Another update! Hope you enjoy!
Chapter 451
Steve had been acting weird that last couple of days.
He suddenly seemed entirely too close to Con. Like the two of them had become friends seemingly overnight. They were always huddling together whispering now and texting one another more often. She might have thought they were planning some kind of surprise for her, but they weren't close to an anniversary or a birthday.
Whatever was going on, Steve was much more attentive. He had been attentive before, mainly because she was pregnant and he was fawning over her, but now she seemed to have almost all his attention. He constantly wanted to know where she was, what she was doing, and now, for some reason, the members of his team wanted to spend time with her.
Jerry was visiting a lot, as was Kamekona, but mostly it was Adam. Adam had been at her house at least four times in the span of a week and not for a social coffee but to hang out. Like the whole day.
She didn't mind, because both Steve and Con were bother rather busy, Steve with his cases and Con with whatever job he had taken so he wouldn't be bored. She tried not to bug Jian too much because she knew the woman still wasn't 100% sold on her. So she had been happy to have Adam come over. But once she hit three days, she realized he wasn't just lonely, like she had first thought, something was going on.
She wanted to ask but he was trying to seem like he was fine. She wondered if Kono had told him she wanted a divorce yet. She knew it was coming, but she didn't want to confirm it before it happened.
That morning she was supposed to be with Steven. He wanted to treat her to a brunch out and then to go shopping for the baby. So far she had gone shopping with Jian and Con mostly, she had a made a list of the big ticket items that Steve wanted to be there with her to buy. Like the crib and the stroller. But he had been called in. Again.
Some explosion or something.
Shortly after he left Con had shown up. Asked if she wanted to hang out. She always said yes to her big brother. They had been in the process of making cookies when he had gotten a call as well.
Then he too was leaving.
It wasn't until after the cookies were finished baking that Adam had called her to see how she was doing and if she would want to run errands with him that day.
She had said yes because she had wanted to go to the mall anyway. Her baby loved three things. Seafood, slushies and pretzels, the large soft kind she could buy out of the kiosk at the mall. Not all at once, obviously, but still. She never turned down a chance to get a slushie and a pretzel.
Adam had picked her up a few minutes later, happily taking the freshly baked cookie she offered him. He let her pick the music and then they talked about nothing, like the weather and if Adam was happy to be back. Rowan felt like there was a chasm between them, this big empty void that the impending divorce was filling up.
She might have brought it up, if she was distracted by the flashing lights behind them.
"Wait… are they…?"
Yep. They were getting pulled over.
Rowan found herself frowning. "You weren't even speeding!"
"It's okay, it's just a routine traffic stop, nothing to stress out about," Adam said trying to remain calm but the fact of the matter was that he was worried.
When he had promised Steve he'd look after Rowan, one of the things he was looking out for was stress levels. Her last doctor's appointment had highlighted high blood pressure and Steve had nearly lost his mind.
He couldn't make that worse. Steve would have a fit.
The problem was, this wasn't a normal cop car. It could be an undercover cop, but it looked more like an official black sedan. The kind the Government agencies liked to drive.
But why would they want him?
When the two men got out of the car, he knew right away that this was some kind of Government sting. He glanced to Rowan, noting right away that her narrowed eyes were boring into the rear-view mirror watching the two men walk towards the car.
One came up onto Rowan's side, but seemed to shy away when she turned an angry glare in his direction. The bald man came up on Adam's side, noting that his hand was on his gun as he did so.
Both flashed their badges at them, but it was the Bald man who spoke.
"Adam Noshimuri, Agent McNeal, FBI Special Task force. Step out of the vehicle, please."
"Do you have a warrant?" came from Rowan and Adam sort of winced.
"It's alright," he said to her before turning back to Agent McNeal. "Have I done something wrong?"
"Just get out of the car, sir," he snapped.
"No thank you," Rowan answered for him. "I'm craving pretzels and slushies, and that's more important than whatever pissing contest you're in right now. Feel free to ask again nicely or come back with the right paperwork."
They were all staring at her incredulously, Adam included, but Rowan didn't seem to care.
"Ma'am…"
"Don't you ma'am me!" she cried before turning to Adam. "You don't have to do anything. They have to have probable cause or an arrest warrant…"
"We're the FBI…" "—Oh shut up! I know who you are and you still need a warrant!"
More was meant to come out of Rowan's tirade except that she suddenly winced and a put a hand to her belly.
Oh god. Oh god. No, he would not be calling Steve and telling him Rowan had an episode because he got pulled over by the FBI. He wasn't sure he'd survive it.
Steve he would survive. Wo and Sin Nombre on the other hand, would not be as kind when they found out.
He put a hand out to her, asked if she was okay, even the FBI agents watched carefully, gratefully silent this time, until eventually the pain passed.
"Sorry," she murmured.
"It's okay. No need to get yourself worked up over this, okay? You just stay here and try to relax," he said. Then before she could stop him, he slowly got himself out of the car.
He turned to face Agent McNeal. "How can I help you, Agent?"
"I have some questions for you."
"Not until we call our lawyer," came from the car.
"Nope, no. Do not call your brother," Adam said and while he heard Rowan scoff he wasn't sure if she was listening to him.
"Look, she's getting really agitated… you mind telling me what this is all about before she actually does call one of her brothers?"
"Don't worry about her, worry about you. I think you know exactly what this is about."
"Oh my god. You sound like a fifteen-year-old girl right now. This is absolutely batshit that you think it's okay to talk to either of us like this…"
"Ma'am if you continue to interject, we will be forced to arrest you…"
"I mean, sure, go ahead but you're not going to like how it ends."
Adam put a hand out again to ward them off. "No one needs to arrest he pregnant lady, okay? I'll come with you, and I'll answer your questions, no need for a lawyer. Okay?"
McNeal just smirked at him.
Adam ignored the smirk and stooped a bit so he could get a glimpse of Rowan who was still in the car. "I'm going to leave the keys. Do you think you could call Con to come and get you?"
Normally she'd correct him. Sin Nombre hadn't given him permission to use his name yet. Instead, she simply nodded.
"And don't worry, everything's fine, I promise."
But he knew she didn't believe him and as she pulled out her phone, he almost felt bad for McNeal. He very clearly had no idea who Rowan was.
But he had a feeling he was going to find out soon.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
A bomb killed an FBI agent that morning and despite Steve having not liked Agent Fischer, he was not happy with what happened. It wasn't just Fischer that had died in that bombing, so had his wife and his six-year-old daughter.
And in typical Steve fashion he had done the unthinkable. He had given the order to arrest every single person on the island connected to Organized Crime.
He had called in HPD, SWAT and the National Guard to round all these people up, including the high valued targets, or Crime Bosses. He had even called in Con, who purposely wouldn't look at her after not showing up the day before like he said he would. Not even a text about Rowan needing him. Nothing.
Steve had called him to be sure that he hadn't blown up Agent Fischer's family. And when he didn't believe Con when he said no, he called Wo Fat who confirmed that while they were as annoyed with Agent Fischer as Steve was, neither had a hand in his death. In fact, both had been unaware of the situation until Steve asked.
Tani kind of felt bad for Junior. It was his first official day on the job, his first day as a Five-0 officer, and this was what he was dealing with. It didn't help that Con was very grumpy, he hadn't wanted to leave Rowan but Steve had said it was an emergency.
They had all gotten their own high value target to bring in. She had wanted Junior to go with her, but Tani knew that her target would respond better if she went alone. Not that she got to go alone. Once it was established that Steve wanted Con to stay to help rounding people up, he demanded to go with her.
Not that it mattered much, because she needed to go in by herself. Damien Bautista was an ex-boyfriend, she could get him, get to him, she just needed to be by herself. And Con definitely wouldn't allow that.
Admitting that she knew Bautista, even though she didn't fully admit that he was an ex, she simply implied it, had gotten her a round of teasing about how she had a type. The only one who hadn't laughed along with the jokes was Con, who either didn't get it or just didn't like it. It was probably part of why he had accompanied her to Bautista's apartment in Leahi Park.
It took some time but eventually she convinced Con to stay behind with the car while she went for Bautista. She made her way up to the apartment, carefully composed herself and then knocked on the door.
After a pause the door opened and there was the man she knew, a little older now, just like she was. That suave smirk of his on his face.
"Well looky here," he said. She made sure to smile and giggle a bit. He had always liked his girls a little ditzy. "It's been a while, Shorty."
"Mm-hm. Can I come in?"
"Can I trust you not to break anything?"
"Well, since I no longer care that you're seeing other women, I'd say, yeah, your stuff's safe."
It wasn't wise, but he let her in. She let him shut the door behind him while she struggled to stay indifferent. Small talk would be a good way to do that.
"Wow. Hey, you've redecorated," she said trying to sound impressed.
"Yes I did."
"Good."
This was getting awkward, but she made a big show of looking around. He'd think she was looking at the new décor, but she was actually looking for any sign that anyone else was there, or that there was a weapon somewhere he could grab if things went south.
"You grew your hair out." She nodded as she turned back to him, trying to mirror the smile that he had on his face. "How's baby bro?"
"Koa? He's good," she said. It wasn't entirely true, but he was miles better than when Damien knew him. "You know, now that you're not in his life getting him involved in all your schemes."
That got him to laugh, though it wasn't funny. "Well, you didn't always think it was a bad idea to be involved in my schemes."
"That's true. But I also thought Capri pants were cute. But we all make mistakes."
"You know, speaking of mistakes. Heard you got booted from cop school," he said as he circled her. It took all of Tani's willpower not to turn, to let that man just stand behind her. "Guess you can't fight your upbringing."
His mouth was dangerously close to her ear, she didn't like him being that close but she wasn't ready to move yet. She didn't want to throw him off yet, she still wanted the upper hand.
"Mm-hm, I did. I got kicked out of the police academy. But you know me, I always bounce back."
She finally moved away from him, stepping away and turning around so she was facing him.
"So, what you got going on now? Mall security? TSA?"
She answered him by pulling out her badge, she flashed it at him with a smug smile. "Five-0." Instantly that smile faded. "In fact, I'm here on official business. I'm taking you in."
"Bring me in on what?" he snarled.
"Oh, you're not watching the news? A man and his family were murdered."
"You think I got something to do with that?"
"That's what we're gonna find out, aren't we?"
At that he scoffed at her. "I ain't going nowhere with you today."
"Okay. You sure you wanna play it like that?"
"Are you?" he shot back.
Outside there came the screeching of tires and she frowned at him.
"What did you do?" she asked as she moved over to his balcony to look over it. There in the courtyard she could see two dark-coloured SUVs with men pouring out of them. Each had an automatic gun with them.
Oh great. Just. Great.
"Oh I figured the cops would come for me. I called some boys about ten minutes before you got here. They're gonna take me someplace nice and quiet. So, I'm sorry to disappoint you. You and me, it's just another case of bad timing, right?"
Tani responded by pulling her gun. She had some witty line to throw at him when someone scoffed into the silence between them.
"It's only six guys. I can take 'em in my sleep."
Damien turned right away, his eyes falling on Con who was standing in the doorway of the kitchen a beer in one hand. He hadn't put his mask on yet, he was still in the leather jacket, white t-shirt and black jeans combo. He looked normal, outside of the fact that he clearly shouldn't have been there.
Damien turned from him to Tani and then back to Con again.
"Where the hell did you come from?"
Tani secretly seconded that question. How the hell had Con gotten in? The door hadn't opened, they would have noticed.
"Window," he says with a jerk of his head.
"We're on the fourth floor!" Darrin cried but Tani ignored him.
"I told you to wait downstairs," she snapped but he just shrugged at her.
"It's easier to give you back up if I'm nearby."
"I didn't need back up."
"Uh… yeah you kinda do. Not only did he get way too close to you for a moment here, we have six men coming up the elevator. How exactly do you plan to get past them without me?"
Tani brushed past him, taking a chair with him. She braced it against the door as both men watched her do it.
"You really think that's gonna keep them out?" Damien taunted but was once again ignored.
Con, however, just sighed at her like she was annoying him.
"Seriously," he said as he pulled out his machete. "It's not that many people. I can handle this."
"We don't know that."
For a second Con looked insulted. "Sure, we do. I took out a building of Yakuza. They had way more men."
"That building was also larger and more places for you to hide and ambush people."
Damien's wide confused eyes swung between Tani and Con before landing on her. "Who the hell is this guy?"
"No one," he said softly before turning back to Tani. "Just let me deal with it."
Damien rolled his eyes. "There's no way this asshole is going to be able take my boys. So, for old times' sake, I'm gonna do you a favor."
"Is that right?"
"That's right. Here's how it's gonna go: you let me walk out of here. I'll leave with my crew, and you get to live. I'll even have them leave boytoy alone."
"Boytoy?" she echoed.
Con shrugged. "I get it. I am pretty. Besides Wo says I have Boyband hair."
Finally Damien seemed to realize that Con was a little more dangerous than he first assume. Machete or not it was hard to take him seriously when he was so cavalier about everything. But hearing the name Wo, had Damien's eyes narrowing at him.
"Wo?" he echoed. "Like… Wo Fat?"
Con hit him with a dazzling white smile while Tani, with gun still pointed at Damien, cleared her throat to get his attention back on her. "That's such a generous offer."
"You should take me up on it too, cause if you don't, I guarantee it won't end well."
There came a knocking at the door and before Tani could stop him Damien shouted: "I got Five-0 in here!"
He was answered immediately with gunshots. Tani flinched, grabbing Damien by the arm and forcing him back around and towards the balcony.
"You know what? You always did lack imagination," she said right before she threw him over the edge. Not seconds after she threw herself over too landing in the pool below.
Damien wasn't resurfacing as quickly as she'd like, so she swam down to get him and bring him back up. Once they were in the shallow end, she realized that Con wasn't in the water with them.
She glanced up to the balcony they had just jumped off of to see Con staring down at her, the white rabbit mask finally on his face.
"Get down here!" she called up to him, but she knew, just by the mask alone that the man had no intention of jumping off that balcony.
He said nothing, gave her no indication that he was even listening, instead turning around and walking away.
"Wait… wait… is that... that's…" Damien was stuttering, probably from the shock, but that meant that he also saw what she had seen. That unfeeling white rabbit mask staring down at them. He was realizing that his hunch was right.
"The world-renowned Assassin also known as Sin Nombre. Yeah."
From the apartment they heard gunshots and she tried not to wince. She reminded herself that she wasn't lying. Her boyfriend was a world-renowned assassin that specialized in the ridiculous. He was probably right he no doubt that he was going to be just fine. He didn't need her worrying about it.
"Come on, let's go," she said to Damien, dragging him away and towards the Five-0 SUV she had taken.
As she threw the cuffed Damien into the back she took note of the fact that the bag of weapons that Con usually travelled with looked like it had been rifled through. So he had armed himself with more than the machete before he scaled the building.
She also noted that it was quiet. Outside of the last few gunshots she hadn't heard anything else.
So, it was rather off putting when the flock of men Damien had called came towards her car. She might have been much more worried if she couldn't see the white rabbit ears behind them.
She waited for Con to come into view. He took in her stance at the car and then turned back to the six men who seemed to be cowering under Con's masked gaze.
"They've decided that they're going to follow you back to the facility, haven't you?"
"Yes, Sir," came from all of them.
With that confirmed he nodded to Tani. "I've had something come up, tell McGarrett that I'll keep him posted but I'm going to be busy for the foreseeable future."
Tani longed to ask him if it was Rowan again. But she had a feeling the answer was going to upset her so she just didn't bother asking.
There was no hug or kiss, no fond farewell. Despite her being his ride, he just… left. She wasn't sure how he was going to get to where he needed to go., but she decided that she wasn't going to worry.
He was a big boy. Con could definitely take care of himself.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Steve had a hard time getting any of the people they pulled in to talk to him. None of them seemed to know what had happened to Fischer. None wanted to admit any connection to the bombing that killed him and his family.
One of them had to be lying though, he just wasn't sure who because they all sounded so sincere.
Steve had one last hope and that was Kenzo, the new Yakuza Oyabun on the island. They hadn't been able to wrangle him though and had no leads on where he could have been holed up either.
His first thought was to call Wo, but with everything going on, he wasn't sure if it was a good idea. Especially since Con had something come up.
His next best bet was Adam, he still had connections to that world. Nor was he that connected to Wo Fat to raise alarm bells. The problem was that they couldn't get a hold of him, which set off a completely different set of alarm bells in Steve's head.
He had Jerry ping his cellphone and was livid to find out that he was somewhere in the FBI headquarters. He knew exactly who would have brought them there and why.
Steve wasn't going to let them pin this murder on his friend and with that righteous anger he stormed into that building, past the receptionist, not letting her stop him as he made it towards the room that Agent Fischer and McNeal had first seen him in.
He had guessed that's where any interrogation would be happening, and he was right.
He opened the door, recognized Adam's dark blue button up, recognized that someone was sitting beside him, probably a lawyer and then turned onto McNeal.
"Hey, whatever is going on here, it's over," he said as he stormed towards the other agent.
"Hi Baby," he heard someone say, someone that sounded just like his wife. He glanced to where Adam was sitting, took in his wife sitting beside him, in the spot he thought was his lawyer.
"Hi Ro," he said before turning his attention back to McNeal, only for him to pause again as he realized exactly what he had seen. "Rowan… what… what are you doing here?"
"Technically I'm arrested," she said casually showing him her cuffed hands. "I was trespassing."
"She keeps breaking into the building…" McNeal said almost smugly.
Despite the gravity of the situation Rowan simply rolled her eyes. "I keep telling you it's not breaking in if none of your damn doors are locked."
Steve was doubly angry now. He rounded onto McNeal with wide angry eyes. "You arrested my wife?" he thundered.
McNeal straightened. His smug smile fading right off his face. "Wife?"
"Who did you think I was?" Rowan cried.
Steve got right into McNeal's face, the man held his gaze but he still attempted to back away.
"First you harass my friend here, and now you're harassing my wife?!"
"Stand down Commander," Rowan called and Steve whirled onto her.
"You've been arrested!" he hissed at her.
"Oh pish," she said with a wave of her hand. "There is literally nothing to worry about. Nothing's official, no paperwork has been filed and when he finally picks up his phone, which he'll have to do at some point, everything will be set straight. Okay?"
"Rowan… this is nothing to shrug at…"
"Oh baby, to be fair to him, I have been letting myself both onto this floor and into this room despite them escorting me out on several occasions. The first few times they were rather polite about it, I just… I didn't take no for an answer," she said. She then pinned him with a soft smile. "And besides, I've already spoke to Wo and he's going to deal with it. I'd have more information if he hadn't confiscated my phone, but I reckon things are set because someone keeps calling his line. He just keeps ignoring in favour of harassing poor Adam. He seems to think he blew someone up."
"Yes Rowan…"
"And that makes no sense," she continued on, not letting Steve get a word in. "I keep saying that explosives are more of Wo's M.O. but he won't listen."
"Rowan… that doesn't change that he's clearly gone against my warnings…"
The phone cut off whatever Steve was going to say. McNeal turned to it, staring at it like it was a snake about to strike him.
"I suggest you pick it up. Sooner or later the missed calls are going to piss Wo off and he'll send someone up here to get me," she said. McNeal glanced to Steve and Rowan quickly shook her head. "He never sends Steve. He almost always sends Sin Nombre, or another player he can pay for a quick job."
McNeal swore softly under his breath and then went for the phone. Rowan turned a triumphant smile to Steve.
"See, told you," she said and then suddenly winced. A soft oh came out of her as she put a hand to her belly. Adam straightened in his seat, a hand to her arm immediately. Steve was across the room and at her side in a second. Down on one knee beside her, one hand to her lower back the other to her belly. He could feel his son's kicks against his palm.
"What is it, are you okay? Is it time?!"
Rowan smiled patiently at his concern. "No, it's too early for him. I'm fine, your son seems to have mistaken my liver for a soccer ball."
Steve couldn't help but smile at her. He loved the way she talked about their baby, like he was already there, already forming a personality. He loved it so much that he had started doing it too. It was now a fun thing they did together.
"Don't you worry, I'll talk to him," he said faking his sternness. He then got a little closer so he could speak to her belly. "Come on now, we talked about this little man. You can't keep kicking your mother."
He waited until the kicking against his hand subsided and Rowan settled into a more comfortable position.
Once she seemed settled, he hit her with an actual stern stare. "Your doctor said to take it easy. This stress can't be good for you."
That earned him one of her eyerolls and a derisive scoff. "They practically arrested him in front of me, and when I got in here, they were blaming him for an explosion, but can't tell us why they think it's him. They just keep asking what he did since he got here."
"Don't worry about that, I'll take care of that."
Behind them McNeal hung up the phone rather violently and they all turned to him as he stared at them down.
After a moment of silence where he stood with his hands on his hips seemingly taking in all that had just happened to him he eventually said: "I've been told to apologize."
Rowen hit him with a sarcastic wink. "Yes, I figured. But that wasn't an apology, now was it?"
She said it so patronizingly that Steve had to bite down on his snort of amusement. Rowan simply offered her cuffed hands out to him.
McNeal frowned at her, but he moved forward to uncuff her.
"I'm very sorry for the inconvenience Miss. Pierce."
"She's Mrs. McGarrett, thank you very much," Steve snarled but Rowan put a hand to his shoulder to keep him from saying anything else.
"Thank you for the rather lack luster apology. Now, if I know my brother, and I believe I do, I'm going to guess that you've been told that you're not actually allowed to arrest Adam, or me. So unless you have any actual evidence, both of us will be leaving now."
By the red that had started to creep up on McNeal's face, Steve knew that Rowan was right. He glared at her for a moment before softly growling: "He said you'd call off the assassin…"
"Oh yes, Sin Nombre, my other brother," she said to him with a smile. "I left him downstairs because he wanted to come in here guns blazing and I thought it might be better to not shoot our way in and then out."
"I can't believe he let you come up here by yourself," Steve said gently. "I'm surprised he didn't come looking once you took too long."
"I'm going to guess Wo activated him when this poor little agent refused to pick up the phone," she said to him with that sarcastic wince back on her face. Steve hid his smile by pressing a kiss to her knuckles. She turned back to McNeal. "If you get me my phone, I'll see where he is and get him to stand down."
"So, Adam was the situation Con got pulled for?"
"Hmm? No. He had to come pick me up."
"Pick you up?" Steve echoed as McNeal came back with her purse and handed it to her. "Pick you up from where?"
"We got pulled over on our way to the mall for pretzels," Adam said. He had been quietly watching all this going down. "They took me back here in their car…"
Steve was up on his feet, whirling onto McNeal so quickly that the man started and stumbled away from him. "You left my pregnant wife on the side of the road?" he thundered.
"No, I was in Adam's car…. Ah there it is." She pulled her phone out of her purse and looked over all the texts. "Oh… he is not happy."
Steve let her go back to texting her brothers and he gestured to Adam to get up. Once Rowan was ready, he helped her up to her feet.
"We're leaving," he mostly told McNeal.
McNeal seemed to know he was beat, but still Steve didn't like the way his eyes narrowed in on them.
"Sure, fine, but before you go, maybe you'll want to look at this."
He slapped a file down onto the table, opened it up and then shoved the surveillance photos towards Adam.
"What's this?" Steve asked as everyone poured over the photos.
"It's a little gift form our friends over in organized crime."
It was pictures of Adam with a man that Steve almost recognized. He wasn't sure from where though. He glanced to Adam first and saw from the stoic look on his friend's face that he knew exactly who that man was and that it was probably very bad that the FBI had pictures of him with him. On the other hand, Rowan's narrowed angry glare also told him that she knew this man too.
And that was much more worrisome.
"That's Brandon Kenzo," Rowan said pointing at the photo. She turned her eyes up to Steve. "Wo let him take over the Honolulu faction of the Yakuza after Michelle Shioma died." She seemed to think about it for a moment before turning back to McNeal. "Are you telling me that this is what you have on him? He talked to Kenzo? Wo could have asked him to do that."
"He did actually," Adam said.
"There, see, talk to Wo he'll vouch. He likes Adam…"
Adam shot her a confused look. "Likes me? He can't remember my name."
"Oh, that's a dominance thing. He likes you. He thinks you two are bros."
Adam perked up instantly. "Really?"
Rowan nodded, Steve, however, was ignoring the two of them, and staring at the photos instead. He was very curious as to why Wo would send Adam to talk to the Oyabun. What did Wo trust Adam to do that he couldn't trust Con or Steve with?
"Rowan's right, that means nothing. If Wo says he approved him as an Oyabun, then he's in charge, not Adam. And him speaking to Adam means nothing. If you call Wo and he can't vouch then you'll know where to find us."
He didn't wait to hear what McNeal said. He ushered both Rowan and Adam out of the door where they found Con waiting for them.
He wanted to chastise the man for letting Steve's wife come up there by himself but he didn't. He wanted to get them all away from this place and the FBI as soon as he possibly could. Once he got them down to the lobby he turned onto them.
Rowan put a hand up to him. "I'm not in the mood to argue about this Steven. You think this was stupid and that's fine. I'm still craving Pretzels and slushies, Con can take me, can't you?"
Con nodded sharply to her and she turned back to Steve. "Can we argue when you get home tonight?"
"Yeah, course babe," he said moving in to press a kiss to her cheek.
"Adam, we're taking your car," she said and then before Adam could say anything her and Con were leaving.
"You, come with me," Steve said as he led him back to his truck that was still illegally parked in front of the building, the flashers still on. Once Adam was in the seat beside him, he turned to him and asked: "So what's going on?"
Adam shot him one long look before he took a deep breath. "How much do you know about what's going on with Wo Fat?"
"You mean about how someone's set up shop on Hawaii and is successfully and quickly muscling him out?"
"Yeah. Well, he's known about it for a while. He knew I was coming back to Hawaii… he asked me to go see Kenzo. See if I could get anything out of him."
"Why you? Why not Con?"
"Wo's burned a lot of bridges going straight. Yakuza isn't taking his new position very kindly. He didn't want to chance Sin Nombre going in and having to kill his way out. Kenzo may owe his position to Wo, so he somewhat listens to him, but he's still not happy with him. He doesn't want to have to take him out as the next person probably won't be as inclined to listen to Wo Fat. So, he sent me in instead."
"What did Kenzo give you."
"Nothing much, but I got the feeling that he knew more than he was letting on. Wo has Con watching him mostly, see if they can catch who he's communicating with. It might be our mystery boss."
"You think he's working with or answering to the person who did this?"
"The explosion? No. But at least with the person who's competing with Wo."
"Right. Well… he happens to have gone underground, any chance you would know where he's gone?"
"Uh… I'd have to ask around but I'm fairly confident that I could find him."
And that was all Steve needed to hear. Steve drove him over to the Palace, gave him a car to drive and then let him go do his thing. He'd just have to wait until he heard back from him.
