Teddy met with the interns in the conference room.
"Why are we meeting with chief Altman," Mika asked.
"I think she wants our feedback on the new food thing," Lucas guessed.
"Does she," Jules asked.
"I guess we will find out," Mika replied.
"Good morning," Teddy greeted as the interns walked in, "help yourself to breakfast then we're going to chat."
"Chief," Mika asked.
"Food first," Teddy commanded, pointing to the table, "breakfast is the most important meal of the day."
"You," Simone asked.
"I'll grab some fruit but I ate at home with my kids," Teddy assured, "I'm in the or late tonight so will miss bedtime and wanted the morning with Allison and Leo."
"What's for breakfast," Simone asked.
"Fruit, yogurt, eggs, bacon and hash browns," Teddy replied, "toast and coffee. There's tea, juice and water as well."
The interns grabbed breakfast and sat at the table.
"Why are all the tables pushed away," Blue asked.
"Because it's just us," Teddy replied, "I know chief Grey hired you as her last chance class. I don't see it that way. You are here because you are surgeons and are ready to do good work. You are doing good work. I'm here to support and push you. You all have talents and I heard a lot from other attendings and my husband while I was away."
"Dr Hunt told you," Kwan asked.
"We talk about it and how to help," Teddy replied, "today this is our first breakfast with the chief. We will do this once a month as long as I hold this position."
"When we're second years," Jules asked.
"We'll still do this," Teddy assured, "my plan is to have my Tuesday and Thursday mornings set aside for the first hour to meet with each group and our fellows."
"Every week," Simone asked.
"Once a month for this group " Teddy replied, "but I'm going to warn you now there will be three or four months that my husband or sister in law will sit with you and be my eyes and ears. I'm pregnant with our third child and will take a few months with my children. Dr Webber, Dr Bailey and Dr Hunt will fill in for me. Dr Webber will teach with Dr Marsh, Dr Bailey and Dr Hunt will share administration duties. Dr Ndugu will run cardio and we're bringing in a locum cardio surgeon."
"Dr Grey and Dr Pierce," Mika asked.
"Are not likely to return," Teddy replied, "we may see them as visiting surgeons and I want them on the roster of visiting teachers with Dr Montgomery. Your next visiting teacher is Dr Nathan Riggs. He's cardio and trauma extensive field experience with US military and humanitarian groups."
"Can we come back to your," Mika started.
"Baby," Teddy smiled, "you get basics. I'm 16 weeks. So far so good. I may go off early or stop operating before the due date. But I am still your chief."
"May I speak with you privately after this," Jules asked.
"Of course," Teddy replied, "today I'm here to listen. How are things going? What do you need?"
"More sleep," Kwan replied.
"Is it your work schedule or time management," Teddy asked.
"Scheduling," Kwan replied, "I need more than 8 hours between shifts."
"I'll talk to Schmidt and Helm about the schedule," Teddy assured, "I see them on Thursday for breakfast. Is everyone eating?"
"Yes," Mika replied, "the updated stipend and having snacks and food here helps."
"So you're getting the meeting left overs," Teddy confirmed.
"We are," Jules replied.
"Why would you send it to residents and interns," Lucas asked.
"Because you need it," Teddy replied, "and it reduces food waste."
"When can we pick what services we want to be on," Mika asked.
"Not yet," Teddy replied, "I know you want to do your favourites but this year is about getting the basics. See everything, try everything, scrub in as much as you can."
That evening Teddy picked the kids up early and went home.
"You went home early," Owen commented when he came in after the kids bedtime.
"I'm tired," Teddy replied, "I don't have the energy I did when I was pregnant with Allison. I can't go home and collapse on the couch or in bed and watch puppy videos."
"You were in a hotel," Owen shook his head, "we did that wrong."
"We didn't talk it through enough," Teddy replied, "we didn't communicate. We've gotten better now."
"We still go to marriage counselling," Owen answered.
"It's okay Owen," she smiled, "stop stressing I can hear your over thinking from here. I'm just tired it was my first day back. It went well, I got caught up in my office. Saw the interns, announced my pregnancy."
"Ya I heard about that one," Owen smiled, "how is peanut today?"
"Moving," Teddy smiled, "I'm showing already, it's so obvious now."
"To us," Owen said, "my mom, Megan would notice. People outside of that maybe."
"We see Carina tomorrow before work," Teddy said, "check on baby."
"Have we decided on the amnio," Owen asked.
"I want to just because of what happened to me and our age," Teddy replied.
"If we get a diagnosis of something," Owen asked.
"It depends on the diagnosis," Teddy replied, "I know we fight for women's right to choose but unless the baby has no chance of survival I will deliver this baby and love them."
"Birth plan," Owen asked.
"C-section," Teddy replied, "after what I've just been through it's safest."
"So we're on the same page," Owen agreed, "I didn't know how to tell you if you didn't want one."
"I don't want to I have to," Teddy replied, "if it's safe I want a natural birth again."
"I can't take watching you in pain like that again," Owen said, "Teddy that was hard to watch."
"It was hard," Teddy agreed.
"Do you want to," Owen asked.
"I do," Teddy replied, "avoid another surgery on me if I can. That scar is easier to hide at least."
"Is that why you won't let me see you with out a shirt," Owen asked.
"I'm embarrassed," Teddy admitted, "the scar is so big and it's still sore on and off and my belly is already getting more stretch marks."
"The stretch marks are beautiful," Owen smiled, "so is your scar. It all shows how strong you are."
"Stop buttering me up," Teddy teased.
"I'm not," Owen said, "i'm going to eat then head to bed. Are you going up?"
"When you go," Teddy smiled, "I need a snack."
