Chapter VII:

Gotta blast

Danny ran through the unfamiliar halls.

He just has to run.

To get away.

Don't stop moving.

Run. Run. Run. Run. Run. Run. Run.

Ancients, where was he? He should've checked if there was a map on the guy after knocking him out. Or a key to take this stupid collar off.

Hearing voices, Danny slid to a stop. Breathing heavy as he looked for a place to hide. Nothing. He had to turn invisible. Whether he rested enough for it or not, he had to try.

Danny pressed his back against the hallway wall. tried to calm his breathing as his anxiety rose. He tried to find that old feeling back, only getting it for a moment before feeling a jolt around his neck. He watched the shadows on the floor grow. He tried once more. Same result. He could hear their footsteps.

"Come on. Come on. Come on," he harshly whispered to himself.

Eventually he shut his eyes and held his breath. The only sense he had was touch and hearing. He heard the footsteps grow closer, making him stiff against the wall. By the sounds of it, there were three people. He was able to verify the theory by their voices. He felt his heart pound in his throat as the footsteps got further away.

When he was sure he was alone, Danny quickly exhaled - coughing soon after doing so. It worked? He looked at his hands. They didn't look any different, then again he never did from his point of view. But if they couldn't see him—

Danny silently whooped and kept running, hoping to find something useful to help him escape the facility.

Then there was a sudden worry. Those people were heading to where he came from. And where he left Operative T knocked out on the ground. Maybe he should've tried to hide him somewhere.

No use thinking about it now, Danny thought to himself. He just hoped that he'd be far enough away by the time they found T.

There was faint yelling from down the halls.

Sounds like they found him.

All the alarms in the lab suddenly came on.

"Yep. They found him." Danny confirmed, covering his ears as he ran faster. He didn't want to fight them. He wouldn't be able to hold back long. For now, he needed a place to hide. Somewhere safe. Just to catch his breath for a moment. His eyes darted around the hall until he found a door. He looked back down the hall. He muttered a curse as he heard various footsteps and yelling coming towards his direction. Danny opened the door and quickly ran inside, shutting the door behind him. The room was dark minus his own ghostly glow. The only sound he inside heard was his heavy breathing. Outside, he heard the agents run past the door.

He sighed in relief, pressing his back against the door.

Then the lights turned on.

Danny's eyes snapped open at the sound. "Oh, great," he muttered.

In the room were not only a handful of agents, about five to eight of them. Problem was they were also armed. With all weapons pointed at him. So much for somewhere safe. He resisted the urge to grumble about his terrible luck. Slowly, he raised his hands above his head.

"At least try not to do anything we'll regret," Danny warned. Unbeknownst to him, the room had suddenly chilled as he took a step forward. His voice became colder than what he initially wanted as he glared at the group. "I'm already in a bad mood."

His eyes scanned the room. A weapon room. The guns and other equipment that was around the room reminded him of what he remembered from his parents lab. Then he squinted. There was another door across the room. He took a moment to weigh his options. Either he walks back out the door and face whoever's down the hall or-

Danny's eyes snapped back to the agents as he heard multiple triggers being pulled at once. His guard up as he dodged the ectobeams that shot out of the guns. "Alright, so we're doing this," He grumbled as he got into his fighting stance. It didn't take long for him to fight back with the small group. Only using his own blasts to knock the weapons out of each the agents' hands before fighting them one on five with his fists. He needed to conserve his energy as much as he could, but that didn't mean he couldn't blow off some steam in some way. It's only natural the most therapeutic way to sedate some of his anger is to punch those guys repeatedly in the face, if given the opportunity. While making sure it hurt, of course. Just to get the point across. He didn't know what point exactly, but that didn't matter. They were just lucky he didn't use those weapons on them.

Managing to take out almost all of them, Danny was left with one more male agent. The operative shot a hand out to the halfa's chest and grabbed the rubber suit. The moment he did, Danny took the cuff of the white suit jacket and pulled up and to the side. Using the opening he made to turn on his heels so his back was facing the agent before using the momentum to throw the final agent over his shoulder and into the door he made his way through. He let out a few heavy breaths as he watched the agent slump into an unconscious state.

Danny felt his heart drum in his chest from the adrenaline. Yet, he let out a thoughtful "huh" as he frowned at the door. "'Was kinda hoping that would break," he sighed disappointed. Maybe he didn't throw him hard enough? Whatever he messed up with, it was obvious that the movies always made it look so easy. He shook his head and took out Operative T's card, deciding that he'll just use it to unlock the door.

He looked around the room once more. Should he take one of these weapons with him? He went to grab one that looked like a bo staff. It was one of the most normal looking ones, so his conclusion was that it could probably work on humans too. Then he caught a glance at one of the blasters. He saw a familiar symbol that had the letters FW. FW? His eyes widened. A strong distaste in his mouth as he remembered the initials. Fenton Works. These were his parents' works. He instantly dropped the staff. His heart was pounding double time, as he turned and walked to the door. Taking deep breaths to calm himself down as he stares at his hands. His wrists. He quickly phased out of the broken inhibitors in his wrists. Sighing in relief once they fell to the floor.

He doesn't need them.

Danny swiped the card on that familiar keypad.

They only worked on ghosts anyway.

That familiar rhythm of beeps ringing in his ears as he put in the code.

He'll be fine with the powers he had.

The door opened.

And Danny ran.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

Valerie was scrolling through the search engine, trying to find any leads on a GiW base nearby. A new hobby she acquired after one of her and Dani's patrols.

(It was the first month without Phantom.

"Val," The ghost girl called out. Valerie turned her head to Dani, who had halted mid-flight, and was immediately worried when she heard her uncharacteristically soft voice. Her green eyes stayed on the darkened FentonWorks building. "I think he was caught."

"By the Fenton's?"

Dani shook her head. "By them."

There was a lump in Valerie's throat that she couldn't swallow. It was an idea that she came to for a week or two, but she didn't want to say it out loud. Not to the one that was practically like a daughter to Phantom. Not after she tried to beat to give her hope.

The silence was deafening. Then there was a choked sob.

"This is my fault."

She turned her head abruptly to Dani. "Don't say that. It's not your fault."

"But-"

"No buts," She interrupted. "None of us thought this would happen.. ever. But it doesn't matter. Because we'll find him."

"We will?" Dani wiped the tears off of her face and saw Valerie's determined nod.

"We will. One day." She said to the younger carefully. Smiling when she received a nod as a response.)

Ever since that day, Valerie managed to make time to look and hunt for different bases whenever she had the time.

The African American leaned back into her seat and stretched her arms. It's been months and she found little to nothing about where Phantom might be. She fought the urge to groan just thinking about her failures. Who knows what he could be going through at the hands of the Guys in White? If it's anything that she overheard them say then, he's probably being experimented on. Dread instantly fell over her.

"Val?"

The girl in question turned her head. She was met with a very familiar messy mop of hair that was managed into a ponytail along with electric blue eyes filled with worry. This form spooked her for a numerous of reasons ("Dani?! Oh god, what happened?! You… Why do you look like this? You're a WHAT!?"), but she smiled nonetheless. "Yeah, Ellie?"

"You know, you can take a break, right?" The younger tilted her head as she spoke. Eyes wide with concern.

Valerie sighed. "I know. I know… You're right." Valerie's pale green eyes landing back on the computer screen for a moment. It's been three hours today so far. Not the longest she's been at it, but it wasn't the shortest either. She glanced out the window then looked back at Ellie. "Why don't we go on patrol as a break?"

Ellie's eyes instantly brightened. "Really?" She asked. Squealing when she received a nod.

A flash of light appeared between them, making Valerie shield her eyes for a second or two. When the light died down, she was relieved to see the girl's tan skin turn pale and her black hair turned to that ghostly snow white. Glowing green eyes replaced those electric blue ones. And something she realized recently, fluorescent green spots dusted her cheeks. Freckles. Then there was her attire. Due to personal reasons, Dani had switched out of the two-piece. Replacing it to a full on jumpsuit that matched Phantom's while still holding its asymmetrical aspects between the black and silver. The left side was silver with a black glove and boot, while the right was black that took up most of her midsection with a silver glove and boot. One her chest was that same silver DP logo. Valerie was confused about the design until Dani had explained that it was because she saw the Yin Yang symbol multiple times and wanted to incorporate it in her suit.

Valerie grinned as Dani eagerly jumped around the room. She was always relaxed whenever she witnessed the ghost girl act like a kid instead of trying to copy Phantom.

Not wasting anytime, Valerie got up and stretched before willing her Huntress suit on. "Let's go, Ellie."

Dani nodded and hurriedly phased out the apartment through the windows, The Huntress following after on her hoverboard. The ghost of the day was already taken care of, which left them to peacefully roam around Amity Park for the night. Or as peacefully as it can get.

Fifteen minutes in, The Huntress was sitting on top of a building while Dani was showing her a reenactment of a ghost she had taken care of on her own. But it was soon (rudely) interrupted as Valerie's phone beeped. The older sheepishly apologized as she went to check it, promising the younger that she'd take her out for dinner to make it up to her.

"Jazz Fenton," the notification read. Jazz has texted her? What was she doing up at this time of night?

Curiosity rising, Valerie looked at the text message. "Come to FentonWorks. Quick."

At the urgency, The Red Huntress quickly told Dani about the message and they both headed to the Fenton household. When they reached the building, they saw that familiar red hair pacing back and forth from her bedroom window, laptop in hand. The two glanced at each other before the older knocked on the glass pane, getting the Fenton's attention. Hurriedly, Jazz opened the window and ushered the two inside. Valerie was quick to notice the elder's more frazzled look. Probably more than she'd ever seen Jazz.. ever.

"Are you okay?" She asked. Dumb.

"Okay?" Jazz repeated slowly. "I just found out where my parents have been going to every night for months. I'm more than okay."

"…are you sure?"

"Valerie."

Valerie winced. It's been a few months since she learned that Jazz knew she was the Red Huntress, but she still wasn't sure if she liked that or not. "Yeah?"

Jazz took a breath. "I found him."

There was a brief silence.

"Wha," Valerie breathed out. The visor on her helmet went up as she glanced at Dani then stared at Jazz clearly. "You found… Phantom?"

Jazz nodded, gripping the laptop with a grim expression on her face. Valerie wasn't sure why. Until she remembered what the other said earlier. What on earth were they doing to make her look like—? Valerie shook her head. She didn't want to know. Not right now.

Instead she gave Jazz a stern look. "Do you have an address?"

Jazz looked up at her, eyebrows raised but nodded once more. "Yeah. They're right here."

"Good. Send them to me." Valerie went to the window, hopping on her hoverboard that was already floating in front of it. "Let's go Dani."

"Hey, wait!"

Valerie paused to look at Jazz.

"I found the information, I should go to make sure he's okay too!" Jazz said, with a pout frown.

Valerie rose an eyebrow but sighed. "Fine." If she knew anything about the Fenton's it was that they were stubborn. And she didn't have the time. She helped Jazz onto the hoverboard and glanced at Dani before flying off

Hold on, Phantom, we're coming.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

When Danny ran out of the room he was quick to realize that the hallway he ran down was new. Was new good? No. Never. Not here. Anything new always hurts him in some way. (He winced as he heard his mother rave about an experiment. The suit he wore was already being cut for the hundredth time. The feeling of a marker going down his exposed chest. How did they always come up with new ideas? This can't just be for fun. They had to love torturing him.) But just this once he'd have to go along with it one more time. He needed something new to help him leave. The Phantom stopped in the middle of a crossroads. His eyes went back and forth between each path. Going straight seemed like the best option. He doesn't want to take any risks of going back in a circle. Satisfied with his way of thinking, Danny began to run down the hall.

"Danny," the voice from behind made the boy in question still. He turned to see Tucker Foley stalking you from behind him, his left arm raised out to him. Danny's eyes narrowed at the Fenton Wristray on it. "I don't want to hurt you, man."

Danny wanted to scoff. "Hasn't stopped any of you before," he growled.

"Good point," A feminine voice said from behind Foley, grabbing Phantom's attention as the female seemed to have suddenly appeared from beyond the shadows. Sam Manson was pointing a bazooka at the 'ghost fiend,' a stern look on her face as she kept her eyes on him from through the scope. "Then let's rip it off like a bandaid."

Before Danny could say anything, Manson pulled the bazooka's trigger. A huge beam shooting out to Danny. The force of the blast carried him down the hall. His back collided with a door before he vaguely heard a large crash. The scenery had changed from those basic white walls into a dark indigo color. Danny gasped for air as his back slammed hard against a tree. He fell onto his knees, hands on the ground as he took in deep breaths, soon coughing up particles of debris as he did so. Through blurry eyes, he looked up from the ground and at the broken wall from the… outside. Was he outside? He let in a shaky breath of air. Fresh air. Green eyes started to dart around. Grass. Trees. A forest. He was outside.

Huh. Convenient. It probably would've saved a lot of time if he thought of doing that before. Steadily, Danny pushed himself up onto his feet. Hissing to himself at the pain that spread throughout his chest and back. It would've been less painful too.

He could only take one step before another blast sent him flying into another tree. This time, Danny let out a pained groan, rapidly blinking as he stumbled up onto his feet. He swore he heard a crack and he really hoped it was from the tree. Why did he have to be in a forest of all places? He kept a hand pressed on the tree for support as the person who shot him came into his vision. His jaw clenched upon the sight of those familiar teal and orange jumpsuits, those haunting red goggles on, both figures holding Fenton Bazookas. But only the teal's bazooka had smoke rising from it.

"Oh come now, it couldn't have hurt that much." Danny shivered. He doesn't think he'll ever forget that voice no matter how much he may try. One of the downsides of knowing Maddie Fenton as a mother he supposed. "I'm sure you dealt with worse."

Danny blinked at the cheery tone his torturer mother had. It was true, but the way she said it made him want to vomit.

"Excellent point, Mads," Jack Fenton exclaimed before pointing his bazooka at Phantom. "So get your ecto-butt back to your cell and save us the trouble."

Danny's heart (and head) began to pound, but he continued to stand his ground. Lowering his hand when he got his dizziness subsided. "No. Never again." He growled, looking at his parents with a firm glare.

Maddie cackled. "Never? You're not thinking straight, dear."

"Actually," Danny shut his hands into a tight fist as a chartreuse color enveloped his hands. "My thoughts have never been clearer."

No more words were exchanged as Danny took the first shot; shooting an ecto-beam at both of his parents. Jack blocked the blast by using the bazooka in his hands like a shield. While Maddie did a tuck and roll to the side, dodging the beam. The middle-aged woman landed on one knee, the other propped up, and shot at Phantom with her own bazooka.

Danny felt his heart racing in his throat as he ducked; the tree taking the blast in his stead. His eyes shot back to his opponents. Opponent. Singular. Singular? One's missing. Where's—

"Gotcha!"

There was that jarring war cry from behind him, making Danny move out of the way from the oncoming attack. Seeing the new proximity between him and Jack, the halfa instinctively jumped a few feet back. They were too close. He just needed to disarm them. Just needed to get those damned weapons out of their hands. He has to try to do something. As long as they weren't close to him. He could get them from afar. He was sure of it. If something goes wrong he would wait for an opening and run.

But during that moment, Danny's focus was completely on disarming the two. He sent disk shaped ecto energy at them, hoping to knock the guns out of their hands.

Then one finally fell to the ground with a sharp cry of pain that made him shiver.

Danny had stilled as he watched his mother rub her injured wrist with a pout. He… hurt her? He stood there dumbfounded as his father instantly ran to check on her. But their voices were muffled in his ears.

He hurt her. He hurt her. He hurt her. He hurt her. He didn't mean to. He wasn't supposed to hurt anyone. But he had hurt her. He hated hurting her because she'd hurt him back. And she always made sure that he would feel worse.

He needed to run.

Get away.

Danny tried to shake the thoughts away along with his drumming core. He tore his eyes away from the couple for the first time. His breathing heavy as he ran on instinct. Barely hearing the cries from behind him as he ran. He ran despite the pain. He ran until his legs eventually gave out. The teen shifted himself behind a tree, not wanting to be sitting out in the open, taking the time to catch his breath.

He didn't mean to actually hurt his mother Maddie. Yet, as scary as it was to admit, it felt… satisfying. He didn't mean to hurt her. But he didn't necessarily feel guilty about it.

Why?

He should feel guilty. Shouldn't he? That was his mother. The person that raised and taught him how to fight. To defend himself. She loved him.

Until she didn't, a small voice in his mind spoke through his thoughts. A mother wouldn't experiment on her children. A mother wouldn't look at her kids like some neglected pet. And a mother certainly wouldn't laugh everytime they cry out in pain, telling them what their feeling isn't real. Face it. She doesn't care. Not anymore.

Danny frowned at the sudden thoughts. As much as he wanted to debate, he knew it was true. He's known for a long time. But that wasn't the answer he wanted. Not by a long shot.

Snap.

The halfa's head snapped to the noise. Forcing all of his unnecessary thoughts down, he stood up. His green eyes illuminating from under the tree as he stared at that one spot. With his guard fully up, his hands clenched into a fist, ready to shoot a blast at whoever might be there.

Crack.

His head turned once more. This time in the opposite direction. But his eyes quickly darted back to where he was looking before. If he wasn't sure before, he was sure now. Someone's here. No. They were here. He didn't run far enough. He should've ignored the muscles in his legs.

No. No time to think about that now, Phantom. Focus. This could be a good time to go back to running. Maybe distract them then dash.

"Who's there?" Danny called out. That's not distracting them. His fists glowing a brighter green, matching his eyes that glared into the dark shadows. "Might as well come out, I'm not in the mood for this." This is a stupid 'plan.'

He kept his fighting stance as he watched a GiW agent walk out from the shadows, a gun aimed at him. Then there was another. And another. Wait what? And another. Before he knew it, he was visibly surrounded by over twenty GIW agents, among them was Foley, Manson, and his parents. Danny tried not to shiver. He's been in the situation before. He should know, he recalled it every night. This was how he got captured in the first place. Was it a coincidence? Or was it intentional? Did they think they could get him again like this? If they did… They'd be wrong. Danny wasn't overwhelmed with disbelief anymore. He fully accepted the betrayal of his former friends and the hurt from his parents. He wasn't shocked and scared anymore. He had time to process his emotions. That mixed with the talk he had with his "friends" earlier? He wasn't just upset. No. He was enraged. And now he had people to take it out on.

This time Danny waited for the first shot before fighting the agents. Beams and blasts through the air. For the first time, Danny let himself use more of his power than he has been using. He did it best to take out most of the agents first. Sending his former loved ones an energy wave to blast them back before continuing to fight. He wasn't aware of how his pupils were slowly turning red as he let his anger and frustration go onto the agents. It probably wasn't a very good idea in hindsight, but man did it feel good.

Unfortunately that feeling didn't last long. The more he kept fighting the more they kept coming back. No. Not coming back. Multiplying? Danny glanced up. His eyes widened in realization. They were coming from the base. They're trying to keep him surrounded.

'This is bad,' Danny thought. 'I need to end this now.'

He jumped back into a spacious area, taking in a deep breath. He fired off his ghostly wail. The force from the howl knocking down all the agents and more that were coming, along with a few trees that were in the way of the sonic blast. Danny, with the strength he had built up, could only hold the wail for a solid five seconds before collapsing on the ground. A dizziness washed over him as he looked over the fallen agents. He fought a sigh of relief as he got up. He had done it. Now it was time to go.

Just as Danny turned around to leave, there was a shuffle that made him whirl his head around. To his surprise, a handful of agents and his parents were standing up.

"What," he gasped, in disbelief. "H-How did-?" How did they recover so quickly? That was his most powerful attack. Not even Dan could get up that fast, so how could they?

Manson gave Danny a smirk that sent a shiver down his spine. "A thanks from those wonderful earrings you got me." She said mockingly, pushing back her hair to reveal a neon green earpiece. A Fenton Phone.

"Along with a few special touches from yours truly, of course." Tucker piped up, grinning proudly. "We kinda figured you'd do that sooner or later."

Danny's jaw clenched as his eyes went around the agents that had stood back up. Surely enough, they were all wearing the Fenton phones.

"See what I told you," Maddie cut in. "You're nothing but a bloodthirsty monster. Look how disappointed you are after finding out your little killing plow didn't work."

The way she cooed at him made Danny's anger rise. She's still on that?! He didn't want to kill them 'Not yet-' 'Not ever!'

"We already have all the information we need out of it. Let's just kill it!" Jack suggested, getting a nod from Maddie.

Danny watched in horror as all of their weapons aimed at him. He put all his energy into that last attack. What was he supposed to do? Could he do anything? ..should he? If he did make it out, where would he even go? He had no home to go back to. Who would care for a freak like him?

His arms went slack as he stared at the residual glow that emitted from the guns from their last blasts. The noises around him suddenly went quiet. His eyes lingered on each person before they closed as Jack's hand went down, signaling them to fire.

Some way to go out.

"Daddy!"

Danny's eyes snapped open. "Ellie?" He breathed out.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

The three weren't far when they heard the sonic howl. But the sudden noise made them all freeze. Dani, was more troubled than the other two.

"That's his wail," She said, turning to the Valerie and Jazz as if for confirmation. "He's- He needs help! We have to help him!"

However, before they could say anything, the young halfa took off in the direction of the blast.

"Dani, wait! Come back!" Jazz has called out from behind Valerie.

Valerie said nothing, but followed after her. Her eyes were on the building. The hole in the wall. Phantom had tried to escape on his own. And if he had to do his wail, then that meant his escape wasn't going too well.

She wished she was wrong about that.

Especially when she saw the Ghost boy basically backed into a corner outnumbered by agents and— was that Foley and Manson? Then The Fenton's.. Why did Phantom look so defeated? So tired? He should be fighting. Why wasn't he? He couldn't have gave up?

There was a gasp from behind.

Valerie turned her head to see Jazz looking at the scene in horror. Like it was the worst thing imaginable come to life.

"Daddy!" She heard Dani say. She gave a mental note to bring that back up later when the time was right.

But that was apparently the push Phantom needed as a shield appeared. And Valerie let out a sigh of relief. She could still help. If he can hold on a bit longer. She could—

Valerie blinked.

Phantom was staring at them. All of them.

Making it to Dani, Valerie stopped her by grabbing her arm. Ignoring the girl's protests as she stared at Phantom.

Then he gave them a solemn smile, mouthing something that made her heart drop. And with a nod, his shield finally shattered into pieces. The blast engulfing his form.

"DANNY!" A voice shrieked in horror.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

Right before the blasts could hit him, silver gloves hands shot up, a flat circular shield appearing between the grouped up blast. The sudden interference forced him back, but he did his best to stay on his feet by digging his feet into the ground as his attention was on the sky. Eyes darting around until he saw that upcoming figure. Then there were one- no, two more. Jazz and Val. They came? They actually came for him! For him? For-

He let out a breathless laugh, ignoring the cracking shield, and gave the three the best smile he could manage. "Thanks for coming, guys," he said. There was a loud crack that came from the shield. He knew he couldn't keep it up. But he hoped his smile didn't falter for them. "I'm sorry.." that it was all for nothing.

He managed to nod before his shield broke. The lack of energy along with the hit of the blast knocking him out. Barley missing his name being screamed out. Completely disregarding two words that seemed to echo all around him.

"Time Out!"

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

Valerie wasn't sure who the scream came from.

Was that Jazz? Did it come from her? She didn't know. Her eyes stayed on that open space as her board stopped in the air. The world around her deafened. She couldn't hear the anguished cries that come from the older teen behind her. Nor the crazed questions that the ghost next to her was asking. All she could hear was her own breathing along with her heartbeat. She watched the agents leave the area and slowly went down, once everyone was gone.

She slowly got off the board and went to the middle of the circle. Where the smoke was still rising off the singed grass. Her weight suddenly doubled as she collapsed to the ground. He was there. He was there! Now? Nothing. No one was there. He was gone. Gone. But he was right there! How? When he was so close. Phantom was gone out of her grasps once again and-

Danny Fenton had vanished from her sight.
